Young: ‘Those who bite will be killed too.’

Perturbed with Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ)’s effort to cut one of his earmarks from an appropriations bill, Rep. Don Young (R-AK) took to the House floor yesterday with an impassioned speech “shaming” his fellow lawmakers:

If we continue this, we will be called biting one another, very much like the mink in my state that kill their own. There is always another day when those who bite will be killed too, and I am very good at that.

Watch the entire speech:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/07/YoungMink.320.240.flv]

Young even suggested Garrett should be voted out of office. “If there is a guilt here, it’s because I’ve been able to better represent my state than New Jersey. I would suggest that New Jersey ought to elect some new Congressmen,” he said.

Not only do they suck, they bite. OK, thanks for the information.

I thought Republicans were against using federal dollars for pork projects.

    Huh.

  3. slimpickins says:

Wow. The only thing they do worse than run government is create metaphor. Just ask Senator toobz.

  4. Largo says:

Yeah, they should elect a Dem. Alaska should too, you douche bag.

  5. Raven says:

“…very much like the mink in my state that kill their own.”

I’m guessing he is referring to mink ranches, where because of the stress, newborns are eaten.

It isn’t much fun living in a 2 foot by 3 foot wire cage, waiting for the electode to be inserted long enough to be stunned, and then skinned alive.

  6. satnin says:

    (R) eating each other?…. for whatever reason. Have an orgiastic feast, by all means.

  7. Dennis Raines says:

Awww. Don’t kill that poor Congressman’s Mink.

  8. Zimzone says:

Hell, I’ll buy dessert and even bring the silverware to watch Repukelicans eating their own.

How ’bout we meet at the House podium & get this on C-Span!

  9. bobcat_grad says:

“I’m better at getting pork for my state than that guy. That makes me a better Senator. Huh…? What’s that? I’m supposed to be doing what’s the best for everyone? That’s not profitable, though.”

  10. coda says:

    “My” money?
No, jackass, it’s OUR money. Republicans used to believe that, back when they had a shred of intellectual honesty left.

So they are starting to eat their own. Must taste a little rancid though… and fatty…

  13. francois says:

Wait, did he just threaten to kill the other guy?

Garrett’s a tool. I live in his district. I hope he does get voted out of office.

  15. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Hey SGT, go over to the WaPO False Headline thread and scroll down to the bottom. We were placing bets yesterday on the identity of Larry Flynt’s Mystery Senator he’s going to out soon. Still time to put your guess on the list!

    must see tv.

  18. Peter C says:

Let’s compromise! Let’s vote them both out of office. I live in New Jersey, Garrett is BAD NEWS.

  19. Don Young (R- ARK) says:

Hey Rep.Garrett, you’re just pissed because I’m a slicker criminal than you.

  20. Marcus Aurelius says:

Mink? Mink? Is this dude a mink farmer, or something?

Note to Rep. Don Young (R-AK): we’re too busy trying to deal with the republican weasels in Congress right now to even think about minks.

  22. LandSurveyor says:

I don’t see a problem. He’s fighting for his earmark. Nothing wrong with that.
And before one of you ill-informed libs tells me earmarks are bad then explain why the Democrats spend even more on earmarks.
    Go ahead, check it.

Well, the Dishonorable Scott Garrett is my Congressional nonrepresentative and we have tried, two times, to unseat this neocon monster. The problem: the wealthy Republicans in Bergen, Sussex and Warren Counties. Garrett’s district, NJ05 (http://garrett.house.gov/ConstituentServices/towns.htm), is the top portion of the state, where a heavy population of the wealthy live, and my town; a struggling blue collar town just trying to get by. This idiot consistently votes against the wishes of his constituents and consistently against the entire NJ congressional delegation in Washington.

It looks like Alaska may have the current lock on the Pork-meister congressmen, with Teddy Boy Stevens and Don Never Young leading the charge.

And Young sounds like he was trained by Huey Long and Tom DeLay before waddling up to the Great WHite North, 4 chins and all!

  25. Porky Pig says:

  28. captjashook says:

I don’t know about the mink metaphor (he should have used wolverines, they’re more dramatic), but I was raised in Alaska and most of my family is up there.

Alaska is a weird state in many regards. People think it must be rich because of the oil, but you won’t be surprised to hear that the majority of the oil money doesn’t flow into the people’s hands. You can also appreciate that the cost of living is steep in the Alaskan climate. Life is just plain different up there and Alaskans, rightly, feel that some of the written and unwritten rules that govern the lower 48s don’t make sense.

A slim portion of the oil revenue goes into Native hands (very slim), another slim portion is handed out to the people as an annual oil revenue dividend. A larger portion goes to the government and, finally, the largest goes into the hands of the multinational oil companies. The ongoing expectation amongst Alaskans is that if they survive up there, the government will be generous. Which it has been. They have some of the best schools in the US, great housing and heating subsedies, and numerous health and welfare programs.

As long as Repuglicans pass themselves off as fiscal conservatives, they will be elected in Alaska. Because even though Alaskans eat a lot of pork, they are by nature extremely conservative. It is a survival mechanism up there that many people do not appreciate. I wouldn’t doubt, ironically enough, that a strong Libertarian candidate would probably take that state by storm.

  37. Pete Bogs says:

what is it with Alaska and their friggin’ earmarks? anyone? maybe they’re just really cold and are getting them confused with “earmuffs?”

PS: nice way to slip in a plug for the mink fur industry, creep…

Those scallywags at the WAPO! Sorry. That scallywag Fred Hiatt has done it again! What a coup! Taking an out-of-focus snapshot of the real debate and decision in the U.S. Senate so as to obscure his party’s scurrilous behavior with respect to Bush’s illegal aggression in Iraq (I refuse to call it a war). You really have to hand it to Bush’s BFF, Freddie. He’s a pro. As in prostitute. As in “one who sells out one’s own subscribers and fellow citizens by promoting fascist policies and practices at the highest levels.” Wish us all luck. We’re gonna need it.

Because I am a pedant, I will not apologize for this but it’s NOT the WaPo. It is the Washington Times and they are two very different newspapers. Not to say that the WaPo is part of the “liberal media” these days, but they are still not the obvious mouthpiece organ of the neoconservative movement and the Times is.

  42. Wilco says:

Republicans are only against pork in districts represented by the Democratic party.

Duh! Everyone knows that, even Republicans! Get with it libs!

  47. captjashook says:

Wow, I can say I am surprised by the knee jerk reaction going on here. Congressmen fight for funding, that is one of their primary jobs. I elect my congressman to fight for funding of projects in my district and to pass legislation that I agree with. Do you think that the big pot of money that goes to Federal government just goes into a computer that does some impossible algorythm and spits the money into people’s districts. Get real people.
Don Young’s metaphors may suck, he may be an Alaskan hick, but the dude is surely doing the job he got elected for…. at least the pork part.

  48. NoOneYouKnow says:

  50. Sachem says:

    From dump Garrett

Garrett’s far-right social agenda is motivated by his fundamentalist Christian beliefs. Those beliefs are outside the mainstream of most American religion and are often directly opposed to values and ideals of most of his constituents in the Fifth Congressional District. These beliefs lead Garrett to radical positions on such issues as:

    * Women’s health (opposing abortion even if the mother’s life is in jeopardy)
    * Public education (choosing to home school his children)
    * Science (opposing stem cell research, favoring creationism)
    * Separation of church and state (holding a revival meeting at his campaign tent at the state fair in Sussex County)
    * Human and civil rights (opposing even recognition of civil unions for gay and lesbian couples, favoring a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage)

Hopefully the voters of NJ-05 will finally have the sense to vote this idiot out in ‘08! Why Rahm didn’t help Paul Aronshn is beyond me.

  51. Wilco says:

    Well put, cap
Somehow, there are people on TP who believe that all earmarks are EVIL.
I’ve had that discussion with people here.
The last number I heard of was that Sen Stevens brings home 2x the money the state pays to the fed.
That was under the last Congress, though.
Ohio gets back right around the same amount it contributes.

If you want the greatest congressman on the planet (or close to it) check out Earl Blumenaur:-)

surveyor, you are a typical myopic neocon. Look asshat, earmarks are fine and dandy THE ISSUE is that they are done in secret, on the sly in the last moment. We don’t care WHAT party you are in, we HAVE THE RIGHT to know about it above board and beforehand, get it? Why is it all you rethugs are BLIND to what is RIGHT? And you call yourselves “Christians?” it is downright sickening to see the gross lack of ethics and morals you Bushie loyalists display. Stomach turning aiding and abetting criminals, talk about unAmerican. All you righties are UNAMERICAN.
Condoning crimes in the White House, White House polluting beyond repair our JUSTICE DEPT., rigging elections and prosecutions~~
are you OUT OF YOUR MIND? This is OK with you because you are an R? Hey, wake up, your party has been hijacked by FACIST RACISTS. If you think Bush is a conservative you are dumber than dirt, look at his RECORD. He has SUNK our country in enormous debt. through an illegal occupation in Iraq that HUGELY benefited his cronies while people are dying. Increased ( not decreased) the “threat of terrorism” WORLDWIDE, Increased the world’s hatred of us and gutted and perverted domestic programs and accomplishments across the board in virtually EVERY govt. agency!
If you Rethug supporters dont WAKE UP and see Bush has ruined you and poisoned the GOP beyond redemption, you don’t deserve to be here or to call yourselves “conservatives”. I say deport all who support this criminal cabal and their sicko warped version of being a Christian. SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE is the only solution. There is no OATH TO THE PRESIDENT, they take an oath to us to uphold our Constitution.
These assclowns have confused their religion with govt. to force their religious ideals into laws and have stacked the Supreme Court with religious whackos too.
Scary stuff and it is ALREADY IN PLACE..

When I visited DC a few years ago, I made contact with Earl’s office in advance, and they arranged a terrific tour of the House. As it turned out, I was there for what was not a regular tour day and one of Earl’s staff took me on the tour — just the two of us. I suspect this is what my local rep is supposed to always do, but I really did appreciate the consideration I got.

When he was on the City Council years ago, he used to irritate me considerably because he’s a career politician, but he’s doing a great job in DC.

I don’t see this thread as anti-earmarks but a commentary on the aggressiveness of Rep. Young.

OT, did you hear the NPR commentator who offered that if she wins the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton would do well to consider Ohio Governor Ted Strickland as a VP running mate because of his popularity in our swing state?

  63. celtic cynic says:

Arrogant bastard, isn’t he? I’m referring to Young who must be taking notes from the other Alaska crook, Ted Stevens. Methinks they both deserve the guillotine.
