Ed Koch ‘bailing out’ on support for war.

Last year, former New York City mayor Ed Koch attacked war critics for their attempts to “weaken the president“:

There is something terribly wrong with people seeking to demean and weaken the president in war time, thereby strengthening our country’s enemies. As a result of the language and tactics of those opposed to our presence in Iraq, our enemies have been emboldened, believing the American public to be sharply divided on the war, and in fact at war with itself.

But in the Politico today, Koch bails out:

I’m bailing out. I will no longer defend the policy of keeping U.S. troops in Iraq to assist the Iraqi central government in the ongoing civil war.

Of course with no apology or mention that those against the war he attacked earlier might have been right all along.

  3. Ben B says:

I don’t think so, buddy. If you criticize the criticizers, you can’t bail out. It’s one thing to support the president then change your mind, but if you do so after equating others who have done so to our enemies, you are a hypocrite.

    Comment by Ben B

I don’t think so, Ben. He is entirely correct. There is something wrong with people questioning leadership in time of war or national crisis.

That something wrong is that this President is a complete idiot, smug bastard.

He stole his first election and did so no the back of the worst partisan attack on a President in history (ie… the lame impeachment of Clinton).

That something wrong is a country that no longer respects or gives its so-called leadership any credibility.

That something wrong is the fact that everyone knows, deep down inside, that this war is immoral.

When we go to war, it should be as a last resort. That has always been the American way.

Koch was right, he just couldn’t put his finger on it properly.

Remember when it was September? Then yesterday, it was November?

  12. PaulB says:

Yeah, this is just the next step in what will be an unfortunately all-too-long process. In September, Petraeus will report “signs of progress,” a few more Republican CongessCritters will bail, but enough will remain loyal to be able to continue to block any significant changes.

But if we keep the pressure on, more and more will bail and the Republicans will pay a price for this fiasco next year.

People often say this. As a former soldier in a conflict, I have to say, don’t pity the soldiers so much. They knew and know what they are getting into and many of them thrive on the feeling that they are taking action in the world.

I pity more the civilians and innocents whose lives are being destroyed.

I do not pity terrorists or war-instigators (like this president). However, it is in my best interests to understand why they fight, so that I can find a way to get them to put down their arms.

It is true I should have mentioned the Iraqi civilian deaths as well. I thought about it, but didn’t write it because I thought it would ignite the trolls.

There will be plenty of civilian deaths after we leave Iraq, and we will argue for centuries about whether there were more deaths or less as a result of our withdrawal.

But it is clear to me that at the very least American military deaths will be reduced by our departure from Iraq, and that is why I only mentioned them.

  24. kelso says:

Maybe Koch realized that his previous talking points were nothing but stupid talking points.

Reality seems to take a long time to set in for some people. At this rate, in about 20 years even some die hard republicans will be able to admit that the Bush Jr. administration is a complete failure and that Iraq was a huge mistake.

Ehh…maybe 40 years or just before they take their last living breath….

It’s really hard to admit you’re wrong, and to a certain percentage of Americans, it’s nothing short of IMPOSSIBLE.

Trolls are invariably chickenhawks, you ever noticed? But, cough cough, they’ve always got some good reason. Too old (”Crikey, I did my service in Korea”) or they’ve got a bum knee or a bad eardrum or something else dire that prevents them from signing up to kill Eye-raqis. Or, like that great video of the YAFers, they’ve just got more important things to do, like go to college and make a lot of money. But, by god, they’ll thump on surrender monkeys all day long on the keyboard.

    Cowards, every damn one.

  45. DanCaveman says:

    To Everyone,

It is dispicable that this administration still uses the “support the troops” montra when there is a mountain of evidence that shows that they do otherwise. They cut funding for veteran benefits while coming up with more money for Haliburton, not giving the proper equipment, withholding lifesaving vehicles, increasing tour lengths…etc…I can go on and on, but that is not the issue either.

The Republicans are going to hold out until they get the Webb-Amendment and Levin-Reid ammendment (and probably a few others) out of the funding bill. The Webb Amendment gives the troops rest and the LR amendment puts some deadlines on the Presidents open-ended war. The majority of Americans want out of Iraq (or at least an exit strategy). They don’t want the Webb amendment passed because the military will not be able to sustain its current force without a draft – and a draft would probably have this war ended sooner than legislation, and they don’t want the LR amendment because it would more directly end the war. The funding is being blocked because the President and the Republicans DO NOT WANT TO END THE WAR.

THIS PART IS FOR ALL OF YOU! Do YOU support the troops? They do not need you to have a sticker on your car – here is how you do it. If you support this occupation, you write your congressmen and demand that they institute a draft to help OUR TROOPS get the necessary rest they need – AND – you march off to the nearest recruiting station and join the military to pick up the slack for the troops that have paid, IN BLOOD, more than their share! I will respect your decision even though I believe you are ignoring critical facts. To do otherwise means one of three things:
    1. You are too proud to admit your mistake and are willing to let our troops die for you to save face OR
    2. You agree that it is vital to this country, but don’t think this country is worth fighting for OR
    3. YOU ARE A COWARD who is not willing to fight or sacrifice for a cause that you truly believe in and think is detrimental to this country.

IN ALL CASES YOU ARE NOT SUPPORTING THE TROOPS! and I beg you to truthfully evaluate your motives.

I believe this occupation of Iraq is wrong. I had hoped we could repair our mistake but it is taking our country down with it, so I am now working to end it. If you agree with me, then you should be voicing your opinion, calling your senators, and discussing it with reasonable people that may not have all the facts yet, so we can turn this country around before there is nothing left of the foundation this country was built on.

I have asked over and over again why the supporters of this occupation (many of which are of military age) have not signed up to fight and have not gotten an answer. I am sure many of you will think of a reason why your blood is more important than mine, my friends, and those bravely fighting in our country’s name – but then you haven’t been truthful with yourself and I can’t help you. I just hope the rest of us are strong enough to pull your weight and get us through this mess.

I deplore you to be HONEST!

  46. DM says:

    “I’m bailing out.”

At a time when rhetoric is so fascinating, it might be interesting to note the wording Koch uses; to bail out is to jump out of an aircraft (with a parachute). It represents a practical action of abandoning a damaged ship that is beyond the pilot’s ability to control. It is used as a last resort to save human lives when all other attempts to prevent disaster have been estimated to fail.

    Very appropriate.

  49. Jeremy says:

I frequent two different liberal blogs (and when I can stand it, Redstate on the Conservative side though I never post there), and of all the blogs, Think Progress is definitely the one most overrun with Trolls.

On AmericaBlog, we get our trolls, but they usually get run off quick by the blog’s administrator. He edits posts that are offensive, warns the offending troll, and bans trolls quickly. AmericaBlog 2.0 seems to be not too far in the future, and that blog promises even more control on the disruptive elements.

On Redstate, they’re even more anti-troll (and anti-liberal, but that’s another matter.) A troll posts there, and ‘Moe’ comes down on them within one post. Granted, he comes down on legitimate liberal debaters too, but that’s par for their course.

They use Registration, which is something ThinkProgress should really get into using. Theirs looks to be a basic e-mail linked registration system, but even that helps to keep the multi-posters in line. Also, changing names over and over again is quashed by that, AND the poster’s name is displayed in the blue titlebar for each comment. If this Blog were set up like that, I bet half our trolls would disappear and the other half would start screaming that nobody ever reads their post.

    Imagine this scenario:

I talk too much and am a pain in the butt. By Mr. President †

That would be just wonderful. :) WHY does Think Progress not do this? I’m not asking for our own Moe, just for a system that will let us, the users, deal with Mr. P. and his kind. They can’t namejack other people (especially dead soldiers) anymore, can’t change their name over and over again to create hassle, and if they really get out of line, we can click that ‘Report Abuse’ button to draw admin’s to their foulups.

And when Clinton began as president, there were 70 states in the union. Now there are only 50…

It shows how the “truthful” Trolls really feel about accurate facts!!!

    Hypocrites.

Ahh, the good Mayor’s opinion is worth today as much as is it was previously, wouldn’t you say?

  79. Think Progress Staff says:

I has come to our attention that many of you libs are making sense. This cannot continue and hensforth, many of those posts that make sense will be deleted. We will, however, continue to allow all of the innane posts of the right wing trolls. Thank You for your patience in this matter.

    #90: Dear Think Progress Staff:

Its not as though we don’t know that you’re turning our IP addresses over to Homeland Security. We’ve calculated that risk. But we feel our effort is worth it. The information we have to get out is of supreme importance to the continuance of the nation. We’re using you as much as you’re using us.

    Sincerely – Larry from C

    # 90 Think Progress Staff:

thanks for that alert. I will adjust my message:

    Clinton did it!

Libs are stupid. They don’t do anything, but they’re responsible for the war.

    HeyyooooOOOOOOOoooooOOOOOoooooOOOOOooooo!!!!!!!!!

    Is that better?

  82. MISTERPRESIDENTSEGO says:

The BEST reaction to Mr. President is to IGNORE him.
Simply do not reply to his statements and he will go away.

You sound like the classic abuser who claims his wife or girlfriend is ruining their relationship by objecting to being punched in the face everyday.

I pity any girlfriend you might have had in the past or future. I know you don’t have one now, because look at you here all the time.

Nor likely to get one, unless the plumber his mommy calls to fix the stopped-up toilet in the basement turns out to be a woman. And she’d have to be amazingly desperate.

  87. Vice President Bush says:

    How am I doin?

Way behind the frikkin curve Mayah!

  89. The Republic of Stupidity says:

Next he’ll start wearing a dress in pub… oh, never mind, that RUDI!

  90. Ben Dover says:

#68. You’re correct. Ed Koch is a Democrat like Joe LIEberman, the Senator from Israel, is a Democrat. So I just call them Repugnicans from the get go.

  91. The Captain says:

  92. Martin Gifford says:

Ed Koch: “As a result of the language and tactics of those opposed to our presence in Iraq, our enemies have been emboldened…”

But wouldn’t the president’s meticulous war-plan, have included the possibility of criticism, and an effective strategy to deal with it?

  93. rub their noses in bush says:

    F U Kochsucker.

  94. VT Independent says:

It is impossible to “win” this war. The insurgents are the citizens, maybe we should call them patriots, of Iraq. Our brutal tactics have pissed off maybe 20 million people, or more if the 4 million homeless are fighting back.

The only way to win is to kill most of them–maybe that is what Lieberman, McCain and BushCheney mean by winning.
