The fruits of escalation in Iraq.

“Attacks in Iraq last month reached their highest daily average since May 2003, showing a surge in violence as President George W. Bush completed a buildup of U.S. troops, Pentagon statistics show.” (Via Atrios.)

  21. Nance says:

Nance, what do the Dems get for standing by like dupes and allowing it to happen?

    Comment by Mr. Turner —

Sadly, until those few Republicans stop voting to continue this war, the Dems can’t put a timeline on troop withdrawal. See democracy does work in this case, even if we don’t always agree with it.

  22. Mr. Turner says:

    Gen. Peter Pace:

“What I’m hearing right now is a sea change that’s taken place in many places here, that it’s no longer a matter of pushing al-Qaida out of Ramadi, for example but rather, now that they have been pushed out, helping the local police and local army have a chance to get their feet on the ground,” he said.

Security has improved in parts of Iraq in the past few months since the increase in U.S. troops in Baghdad and as some Sunni tribes and armed insurgents have turned against al-Qaida.

  23. Gen. Peter Pace says:

But, of course, I hardly ever leave the Green Zone.

The Dems have 51 votes in the senate. Don’t blame this on Republicans.

Just give us one more Friedman! Just one more!

  27. Mr. Turner says:

  29. Mr. Turnercoat says:

  30. Mr. Turner says:

“Of course, 51 votes is clearly enough to stop the g.o.p. from filibustering”

If the Dems were serious about ending the war they could exercise the nucular option.

  68. What the USA used to be... says:

    Standing on the Moon
    Lyrics: Robert Hunter
    Music: Jerry Garcia
To Many Performance Dates To Mention…

Standing on the moon, I got no cobweb on my shoe
Standing on the moon, I’m feeling so alone and blue
I see the Gulf of Mexico as tiny as a tear
The coast of California must be somewhere over here
    Over here

Standing on the moon, I see the battle rage below
Standing on the moon, I see the soldiers come and go
There’s a metal flag beside me someone planted long ago
Old glory standing stiffly, crimson, white and indigo
Old glory standing stiffly, crimson, white and indigo
    Indigo

I see all of South East Asia; I can see El Salvador
I hear the cries of children and the other songs of war
It’s like a mighty melody that rings down from the sky
Standing here upon the moon I watch it all roll by
    All roll by
    All roll by
    All roll by

Standing on the moon, I see a shadow on the sun
Standing on the moon, the stars go fading one by one
I hear a cry of victory, another of defeat
A scrap of age-old lullaby down some forgotten street

Standing on the moon, where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon, but I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco on a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven at this crescent in the sky
    In the sky

Standing on the moon with nothing left to do
A lovely view of heaven but I’d rather be with you
A lovely view of heaven but I’d rather be with you
    Be with you
    I’d rather be with you

Perhaps our US Leaders will resolve their differences. If they don’t, We the People are destined to be dust and never to know what America was….

  71. Mr. Turner says:

It’s not that funny Samsa. Are you high?

  72. Mr. Turner says:

“How did he (Kerry) slander them (our troops in Nam)?”

I could not possibly be insulted by such a basic, transparent, infantile attempt at getting attention. If Mr. P had indeed “cleaned my clock” you think you would have provided a link where you/Mr. P did indeed “clean my clock”. You can’t because you didn’t.

But, hey, thanks for the belly laugh….

As true as that might be, attacks on US forces are up.

And arguing over whether attacks and casualties are up or down, and whether that proves the surge is “working” or not is splitting hairs. Or missing the forest for the trees.

No matter how you try to spin it, Exley. Iraq is a disaster. Rice knows it. Gen Gates knows it. Republican Congresscritters know it. Even Pres Bush knows it -otherwise there would have been no surge in the first place.

  89. Wayne A. Schneider says:

The June 2007 statistics confirmed a significant decline in the targeting of Iraqi civilians, with such attacks falling 18 percent to 763 from a 2007 high of 932 in May.

    Comment by Exley — July 21, 2007 @ 2:45 am

The June numbers showed 5,335 attacks against coalition troops, Iraqi security forces, civilians and infrastructure.

June’s total was 2.5 percent below an October 2006 peak of 5,472 attacks and slightly lower than the 5,365 attacks in May.

But because June has only 30 days, the average daily number of attacks was 177.8, higher than the 176.5 last October and 173.1 in May.

You might have also included the paragraph after the one you quoted, unless you were trying to be disengenous.

The June 2007 statistics confirmed a significant decline in the targeting of Iraqi civilians, with such attacks falling 18 percent to 763 from a 2007 high of 932 in May.

Attacks on Iraqi security forces fell to 889 in June from 987 in May, while attacks on coalition forces rose about 7 percent to 3,671 from 3,423.

The attacks on coalition forces have been increasing, in case you hadn’t read that far.

Mets won! And I’m going to bed.

Good night, Everybody. And feel free to take a break and enjoy my latest parody. Thank you for visiting.

  90. Mr. Turner says:

“No matter how you try to spin it, Exley. Iraq is a disaster.”

Have you seen what Gen. Pace had to say?

    Gen.

Have you seen what Gen. Pace had to say?
    Comment by Mr. Turner — July 21, 2007 @ 2:57 am

Indeed. The occupation of Iraq has been such an astounding success that, four years later, the insurgency is still relentlessly attacking American forces and caused thousands of casualties, with no end in sight.

Such a success that Pres Bush saw the need for a “surge” to try to put down the insurgency.

    Yeah, such a success…

  95. Mr. Turner says:

    I almost missed this one.

And according to Pres Bush, the occupation of Iraq was a success before the surge. You know, with the elections and all.

Then he told us there was the need for a “surge”, without ever admitting that something had failed and/or fully explaining why the “surge” was needed if Iraq had proven such a success until that point.

No WMD, no success after the elections, no success before the surge, and now we are expected to believe the “surge” is a success even with their track record of wrong predictions? Even as they tell us it’s too early to judge?

You must be very naive and must think we are too…

I am aware. I post comments for the benefit of other posters.

It was a quick reminder of the many times we were given a wrong prediction, told things were peachy when they weren’t, and the ever-shifting goal posts that have been moved so many times as we are told we must “stay the course” (I have a hard time keeping up with the changing reasons for invading Iraq. Was a new one declared this week? Or are we still working with the one from last month?)

Of course, given the short attention span most Bush loyalists seem to have, all this is ancient history because the Leader has, you know, “moved on”….

Your one line remarks were so sophisticated.

He was trying to be sarcastic. The irony was lost on him….

    Comment by dbadass — July 21, 2007 @ 3:57

    Yes, I do, dbadass.

Reminds me of our current corrupt, crooked president and his president-in-charge-of-Vice, SiCKO DiCKO. They are enraged because the truth will always out!

    And here is the TRUTH:

“Attacks in Iraq last month reached their highest daily average since May 2003, showing a surge in violence as President George W. Bush completed a buildup of U.S. troops, Pentagon statistics show.”

Dear Lord, we’re back on topic! It’s a MIRACLE!

  116. hterrya says:

What is the worst part of what is the truth in Iraq, is the suffering that the Iraqi people and our own troops are suffering, yet nothing changes for the better. It only gets worse.

This is our $610 billion in tax dollars flushed down the toilet for a “global war on terror” that has, by-and-large, only increased the terror.

I lived through the Nixon debacle. This is worse!

  117. Gregor Samsa says:

What intrigues me is the anger part. It seems a common theme.
    Comment by dbadass — July 21, 2007 @ 3:57 am

I’ve noticed that too. It’s because they have much invested, emotionally, in this president, his initiatives, and the GOP at large.

Confronting the reality that this administration has been a failure hurts them so much, they have to badger anyone who dares point that out. Or even criticise it mildly.

Why, this troll even said the Pentagon’s own statistics were “tainted” with a liberal slant, and accused Reuters of being anti-American. Those are the mental contortions the Bush followers have to do to remain loyal to their father figure.

  118. dbadass says:

What’s the least painful and most ethical solution? Imagine the conditions for these poor people. I have two little children and can’t begin to fathom what living in a war zone as a parent must be like… Tragic!

    Comment by hterrya — July 21, 2007 @ 4:16 am

There are about 4 million Iraqis displaced by the war. Four million. Four bloody million people who have left behind everything they had. Not to mention the “excess deaths”.

All of this because of a war that didn’t need to happen. And all of it during the US military occupation. But, oohhh, things are going to get ugly if the US withdraws -as if they were peachy right now.

What a shame. What a bloody shame.

  120. Theresa says:

#115, hterrya: No, no miracle. Just logic (regardless of the deviant, winding, off-course it takes to bring them back home).

Excuse me for feeding the trolls but I dare one of those dicktards to make some kind of “who cares, they’re all “radical islamists” bullshit, then look themselves in the mirror and see a reflection

    Comment by dbadass — July 21, 2007 @ 4:28 am

Oh, they do. And they will. Because they really don’t care.

They don’t think of Iraqis as people deserving respect, which is another reason why this whole “liberation of Iraq” is a pot of crock: They repeat that meme to feel good about themselves, not to express something that they actually aim for.

If they did care, they’d understand why more than a few Iraqis are willing to take a shot at the American troops, er, Coalition Forces.

  123. hterrya says:

“…they (the NeoCon trolls) have much invested, emotionally, in this president, his initiatives, and the GOP at large. Confronting the reality that this administration has been a failure hurts them so much…”
    Comment by Gregor Samsa — July 21, 2007 @ 4:18 am

Truer words were never spoken, Gregor.

They couldn’t see that what came out of the White House was attacks on “liberals,” lies, distortions, dirty tricks, distractions, and phony “talking points.” What was missing was leadership, concrete ideas about how to improve this country, and actual positive results.

Instead, they (and we) got the Iraqi and Katrina disasters, non-competitive bids for war-profiteering buddies, Eron felonies, Abramoff scandals, and the outing of a CIA covert operative.

And now that the truth is coming out, that has GOT to hurt! And being humans, we sometimes react in anger, rather than working to resolve the situation that is causing the hurt.

I wouldn’t want to be in the trolls’ shoes, or in the shoes of the millions of Americans who voted for this bunch, only to find out how corrupt and crooked they really are. I am sure the folks who voted for Nixon felt the same way, too.

If I were in their shoes, I would probably be angry too.

  124. hterrya says:

Well, gang, I think I will hang it up.

It was a pleasure sharing ideas with you, dbadass, Gregor, and Theresa, once the troll dung got cleared away. {:-)

  129. ace says:

nice to see what your site has become, a haven for trolls and operatives, while the truthtellers are banned (the first third of the thread is clearly one guy using multiple names – thereby ensuring nobody who actually cares about this country will bother reading anything that follows)…and you condone it.

    you must be very proud.

enjoy the fascism, because you’re part of the problem.

  130. veritas says:

G’morning, TP Friends: Check this article out. It’s clear that the Chimp is leaving Congress (and the american people) no alternative but impeachment – and impeachment right NOW.

    http://smirkingchimp.com/thread/8851

  131. veritas says:

Morning, Ace! Did they scrub the information you gave us yesterday? Thankfully, I downloaded it and have it but when I returned late last night and looked for it, I couldn’t locate it. I thought that maybe I’d missed it and couldn’t recall the thread it was posted under.

It’s beginning to appear that TP is perhaps a fascist mouthpiece in disguise if that is the case. I do witness that the same troll is permitted continued posting under a potpourri of names while those names are being sent from the same IP address which TP can see. I’ve also heard lately that legitimate liberal bloggers are being cast from the threads. If this is the case, then no one with intelligence and self-respect will continue to post on these threads.

C& L, KOS, smirking chimp do not have this problem which leads me to believe in the veracity of your comment above.

Certainlyl, if the concept of free speech is being sanitized and censored, then the blog is a sham. Is this the case with TP? I am surely beginning to wonder.

  132. veritas says:

Ace: Please give us another way to continue to receive your very valuable information and data if this is the case.

  133. veritas says:

Do you post it on other sites where we can continue to find it if TP censors and sanitizes their threads?

  134. AboveTheClouds says:

Sadly, despite 3,600 American deaths, the GOP leadership and President Bush have failed to convince America to give a shit about Iraq.

  135. veritas says:

#134 Iraq was but a small “tool” in their march to fascism and the “coup on this democracy”.

  136. ace says:

    Veritas:

I think the bigger issue here is the nature of the internet and all of these supposedly liberal blogs. We can know who they are and what they represent by their actions.

Have you EVER seen TP delete any of the inane blather and ridiculous graphical outbursts on these threads? Why would they not delete the first few posts on this thread which are clearly one guy talking to himself.

There is a reason why the same exact pattern has existed at Huffington Post and Crooks and Liars and other sites. They are NOT WHAT THEY PURPORT TO BE.

The Plutocrats are the ones funding everything, the right, the left, the middle, all of it. They created the purportedly “Progressive” movement and fund this site. John Podesta and George Soros must accept responsibility for deleting all evidence of the real crimes of the Bush Administration, while encouraging the destruction of this forum:

“Podesta laid out his plan for what he likes to call a think tank on steroids. Emulating those conservative institutions, he said, a message-oriented war room will send out a daily briefing to refute the positions and arguments of the right. An aggressive media department will book liberal thinkers on cable TV. There will be an edgy Web site (thinkprogress.org) and a policy shop to formulate strong positions on foreign and domestic issues. In addition, Podesta explained how he would recruit hundreds of fellows and scholars — some in residence and others spread around the country — to research and promote new progressive policy ideas. American Progress is slated to operate with a $10 million budget next year, raised from big donors like the financier George Soros.”

    http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Center_for_American_Progress

Podesta and Bill Clinton were walking around downtown Aspen (pretty chummy) recently. How can it be that these people don’t want the truth revealed, if they are who they purport to be?

  137. Boudin Bob says:

if the concept of free speech is being sanitized and censored, then the blog is a sham.

That’s something you people have never understood. There is NO FREE SPEECH on blogs. Freedom of speech means that the government is not supposed to censor political speech. It doesn’t mean that privately operated blogs should let everybody post anything they want. TP admins are perfectly within their rights to purge ace’s nonsense and, if he continues, to ban him permanently.

Hell, you wouldn’t like trolls to post here, so even you’re involved in suppressing speech you don’t like. And ace’s several pages long ramblings make threads much more difficult to read than a few one-liners from trolls.

  138. trippin says:

Never try to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time and annoys the pig.

  139. veritas says:

Ace: Thanks for this current information. Helps to explain the behavior. This is precisely the type of hypocrisy which led me to becoming a registered Independent. It all stinks. It’s all hypocrisy and lies and setting up the people to take unfair advantage of them. I figured it wouldn’t be long before both sides realized that they could corrupt this last frontier for the revelation of Truth.

Just like the hacking of the voting machines, I must also believe that the winner will be either the one who can hack the most machines the quickest or “the last one into the software to corrupt it”. You know they’ll both be jacking around with our votes in 08.

  140. veritas says:

Thanks, Boudoir bob – and you just outed yourself with that post. Now we KNOW where you sit each day and who you are.

  141. veritas says:

And, for your information, you’re totally and unquestionably wrong in your assertion regarding free speech which is precisely the point of the hypocrisy on this site.

Troll blather obviously from the same troll is NOT being sanitized, yet those who attempt to provide truthful data which the overseers might not want to be outed, are being sanitized.

It’s not a case of countering the concept of “free speech” but rather the selective sanitization of the commentary.

We KNOW (idiot) that the site owner has the right to do what they want (thanks for outing youself by your rapid-fire response, BTW) – it’s the selective process involved which makes this site unquestionably biased and bogus.

  142. Boudin Bob says:

Hahaha. Yeah, right. Ok, if you know who I am, what are you going to do about it?

  143. veritas says:

Speaking for myself, it matters little whether this is a liberal site or a conservative site – I’m neither of them. If I’m going to invest my precious time to any extent then I want to be certain that the cite is exercising the same rules in either direction; otherwise, it’s credibility is shot and it becomes up to the discretion of the naturally, humanly- biased individual monitors.

Let’s have at least some semblance of equality here there – if you’re going to sanitize Ace’s posts because they are provocatively Truth, then why don’t you also sanitize and delete the obvious nonsense spouted by the trolls?

This isn’t child’s play here but your permission of the continued childish, immature commentary by uneducated trolls degrades your blog site. I’ve suggested that many of my friends check it out and post here but, frankly, they’ve found it on such an inferior level intellectually that they aren’t interested.

If you a blog site for immature adolescents, then keep it up. If, instead, you’d like a blog site where real issues can be debated, then you’d better begin the practice of equality – if you allow troll blather, then please don’t sanitize threads of Truth (our Truth and perhaps the “only truth” – even though, for whatever reason, it may not be a Truth which you, personally, do not want outed).

  144. veritas says:

Boudoir – to even engage in discussion with you would be to degrade myself and I have a much higher degree of self-respect than you obviously do. We function in two different worlds, that’s clear.

  145. Boudin Bob says:

    What… the… hell…

LOL! I’m not one of the admins.

    You’ve lost it. Totally.

  146. veritas says:

Never said you were. Your inaccurate inference only suggest your inferior level of intellectual acuity.

  147. Boudin Bob says:

Let’s have at least some semblance of equality here there – if you’re going to sanitize Ace’s posts because they are provocatively Truth, then why don’t you also sanitize and delete the obvious nonsense spouted by the trolls?

You’re claiming there that I’m one of the admins. Don’t try to backpedal now. You freaked out and really went off the cliff there.

As far as your claims of intelligence, one only has to look at what kind of delusions you and ace have bought into to see that your claims of superior intelligence are ridiculous.

  148. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Podesta laid out his plan for what he likes to call a think tank on steroids.

As our resident Sybil-style troll demonstrates, abusing steroids can cause serious brain damage.

‘The question I’m asked most often is, When are we getting our eight words?’ Podesta said. Conservatives, he went on, ‘have their eight words in a bumper sticker: Less government. Lower taxes. Less welfare. And so on.

Besides that being nine words, it’s obvious to us all by now that Mr. Podesta’s eight words will NOT be, “Tell us what really happened on September Eleventh.”

Thanks for all your posts, ace. It’s the efforts, however many times they get censored, of people like you who will one day expose this government’s frauds. When both Jane and I came to realize that the “official” account contained so many holes and self-contradictions that it had to be a cover-up for what really happened, it was painful. But we’ve gotten through the hurt now and we’re well into anger. It’s made me think that perhaps a slight modification to the constitution is necessary. Instead of:

Art 3, Sec 3, Clause 2: The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood, or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

    it should read:

Clause 2: The Congress shall have Power to declare the Punishment of Treason, but no Attainder of Treason shall work Corruption of Blood (except for wealthy families who abuse power), or Forfeiture except during the Life of the Person attainted.

When the truth is finally revealed, even if it’s decades from now, every member of the Bush family who had any knowledge of their family’s involvement and did not come forward should be thrown in jail for life without parole.

Keep up the great work, ace. Speak truth to power. I hope you got to read this post before it gets deleted (unlike the baseless personal attacks we all endured last night.)

Methinks you think to much of yourself.
Stick to the molecular coatings, but try not to spread yourself to thin, your veneer of intelligence is rather transparent.

Good Morning Ace, Veritas, Wayne and any regular poster’s around this morning…..Sad to see how degraded the TP site has become….I appreciate the fine work of the serious poster’s, your info and link’s have been a true asset to me. It has been a joy to be able to join in the fun, when allowed to hijack or read the result’s of internet written play.. Absence of troll’s ofcourse..Noticed yesterday when skipping through, lot’s of good post’s were removed and as usual, personal attacks by troll’s were left on sight…The good one’s are decreasing, noticed Katie left, Trip was banned, Ace had post’s scrubbed……And according to my computer tech who is also a bleeding heart libral I should not subject my computer to the site..His comment upon picking up my puter a week ago was the site is infected and a major cause of my puter problem’s…Something I have known for over a year since I have no problem’s with any other site’s…Oh Well! He and I both know I will check in from time to time in hope’s of getting more good info…

I send you all Blessings today, sorry to be off topic..Now I must take a shower, clean the puter and do a personal healing ritual to remove the evil, black hearted infection the a few troll’s continue to leave and TP allow’s to continue…Peace and many Blessings

  152. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Thanks, Sharon. After the crap that got said about me last night by them, I could use a tree hugged in my name. Thanks, and Peace to you, my friend.

Back at ya Wayne and Jane, Sorry I missed it…Was only here for a few minutes yesterday…Would of weighed in as support had I known…Will do some major hugging of Big Cedar for you and all, will probably do some major smudging of the resort property today as well..Sweet grass and sage work miracles…Candles are lit, Verbal Blessings are said and I will embrace all the lavender in my garden for you all as well…..Peace.

  155. Jane E. Schneider says:

Thanks, Sharon, I’m going to go out and kill me some weeds.

The increased violence in the area is just want the Bush Crime Cabal want. It’s been the neoCON’s biggest fantasy come true that the violence is on the upswing : that’s what the “Mission Accomplished” is all about. Their mission was to turn Iraq and more an d more areas in the Middle East into Hell on Earth. The more violence the better. The more confusion the better. I think I can say that we are all waiting for Evil Cheney’s next chess move : Iran?. The real meaning of the Surge is the surge in violence. God help everone overthere, esp. our troops, when Darth unleashes his wrath on Iran : More Hell break loose. And again, this is a neoCON’s wet dream come true.

    Comment by bilbobaggins

At the risk of being labeled a troll-responder, I can only speak for myself; but one either can exist in an echo-chamber of like-minded thought, or stand up and defend one’s beliefs in the give-and-take of debate (spiced with a little invective for those who do nothing but parrot stale talking points). I’ve been in the echo-chamber of Smirking Chimp and other like-minded sites, and while it is refreshing at first to be able to converse with those who I agree with, after a while it just seems an exercise in synchopancy. Give me a challenge, such as debunking an assertion , and I’m much more fulfilled intellectually.
