CNN’s post-debate analysis tackles the tough questions.

After tonight’s YouTube debate, CNN ran a segment critiquing the candidates on their body language and dress. Wolf Blitzer introduced it, stating, “Candidates also sighed, they rolled their eyes, they looked at their watches during the debate.” CNN’s Carol Costello commented, “Look at how the candidates were dressed. The men wore dark suits, but Hillary Clinton wore a brightly-colored jacket.” Watch it:

Was Paris Hilton there as well? How did she smell?

I bet they found a missing white girl in the audience!!

  2. epm says:

The founders believed a free press would be instrumental in the success of a strong democracy by making voters informed citizens. Who know it would end up become an agent in the death of a strong democracy, buy actually making voters LESS informed citizens.

  3. Jim says:

But how heavily did they sigh? That would make all the difference to me.

  6. The Eck says:

“But how heavily did they sigh? That would make all the difference to me.”

Gore did enough sighing in 2000 for all of these wingnuts.

  7. The Eck says:

“The little tart showed off her cleavage, too.”

That was the only good part.

    CNN is for commies.

  8. The Eck says:

“actually making voters LESS informed citizens.”

CNN tends to do that to the Dems who watch it.

  9. Jay Randal says:

I am glad I did not watch the YouTube debate, because CNN has proven they wanted the debate to be stupid and silly. This was an attempt to discredit bloggers on sites like TP, since YouTubers are on the fringe.

  10. Limbaugh, Rush says:

Ahh.. Yes, but the question is, was Senator Obama black enough? Was John Edwards wussy enough?

Did Senator Clinton have big enough balls?

I’m 98.8% correct all the time!

  11. cajay says:

She also said that the “anti-war left” won the debate. Seems unfair to leave out the anti-war “center.” This is why I don’t watch CNN. I caught that just flipping past the channel. I would have gone insane watching the whole thing.

  12. Jim says:

Gore did enough sighing in 2000 for all of these wingnuts.

That’s certainly what the wingnuts said. And it shows that they really care deeply about the issues, doesn’t it?

  13. Tony W says:

News Flash…middle age democratic men were seen wearing dark suits in South Carolina before Labor Day…we’ll dig deeper into this pressing story along with, should a women wear black pants while standing next to two men wearing dark suits in South Carolina before Labor Day,right after our own exclusive analsys on what color sheets would Elizabeth Edwards would put on the bed in the Lincoln Bedroom and why Mrs Obama might chose a different color…

  14. GSD says:

Maybe CNN will broach the subject of pube grooming next time around.

What a pack of vapid asschappers. Ted Turner should by that Fox knock-off back and fire everyone.

Then start from the ground up with chimpanzees with typewriters. They’ll be more accurate and far more entertaining.

  15. Sharon says:

Glad I skipped it…I was out salting slug’s and planting tree’s…Much more productive….Blessings

  16. Jim says:

#8: CNN tends to do that [make them less informed] to the Dems who watch it.

But the right-wingers who watch CNN and Fox News become more informed? Maybe you can explain how that works.

  17. The Eck says:

You guys are all voting for Nader in 08, right?

  18. jeanruss says:

I had to turn off the analysis, as they just couldn’t stop trashing Edwards, as usual-Edwards really has corporate panties in a twist-It just makes me want to support him even more-I learned tonight that Obama supports nuclear power-No sane person with children could take this stance-I feel he really knows very little about the subject-obviously John Edwards does, as he can’t support it-Walter Russell’s book “Atomic Suicide” would convince anyone of how dangerous nuclear power is-maybe I should send a copy to Mr. Obama so he can get up to speed on the topic…

  19. The Eck says:

“But the right-wingers who watch CNN”

Right wingers don’t watch CNN, only libs like you do.

  20. Joefriday says:

Did any of them have shoulders you could land a jet on ? Biden-did he smell good ? Who had the most expensive hair cut ? Could we see the greatness in any of them? How many humans died in Iraq today ?

  21. epm says:

The debate itself was actually pretty good. Good questions, for the most part… as good or better than the puditocracy.

The post debate rush to fill the remaining 24 hrs of air time, however, is a different story. Once the beautiful talking heads (and Wolf) start offering opinion and insight, things go dark real fast.

  22. Jim says:

#17: Right wingers don’t watch CNN, only libs like you do.

I’m not sure where you get this idea, but the ratings certainly don’t bear this out. Are you suggesting that right-wing Fox News viewers are more informed than “liberal” CNN viewers? The facts show just the opposite.

  23. Chimp says:

  26. The Eck says:

“Are you suggesting that right-wing Fox News viewers are more informed than “liberal” CNN viewers?”

No, I’m not. I’m saying that only liberals watch CNN.

Now I thought these people were running for President. Or does CNN only talk about the GOP candidates. Fred Thompson will be out of the race soon. Now the GOP will have to pick Mitt has he’s buying his way to be the GOP candidate. McCain couldn’t get enough money from his supporters in Iraq.

Call out the Guinness Book of World Records, AGAIN, folks!

    Eck gave another honest answer!

    Eck (µk), Johann. 1486-1543.

    (1) German Roman Catholic theologian who opposed the reforms of Martin Luther and procured from Rome the papal bull that declared Luther a heretic (1520).

    (2) Still another ancient NeoCon, hanging desperately onto the status quo!

Your conservative friend (why?) is not talking about opportunities to help people, or solve problems, just opportunities to make money and gain power. has he taken advantage of the opportunity to defend the USA from the Muslim hordes? Unlikely. If he’s a conservative, he is a craven coward and a less-evolved human than if he were a liberal or progressive.

So why do the vast majority want us out of their country A.S.A.P.? And a small majority agree with attacks on our troops?

Could it be because we have turned it into such a failed state that only Sudan is worse in the whole world? Or the one million we have killed? Or the four million refugees? Or the 60% unemployment? Or the lack of electricity, gas, or clean water?

Guess some people are just ingrates!!!

Perhaps this is why CNN is losing to the internet as a news source.

  367. Kilo says:

CNN’s post-debate analysis tackles the tough questions.

Didn’t you run a story yesterday about why some woman didn’t date Karl Rove 20 years ago ? Tougher than that ?

  368. Bruce Gorton says:

    Eck:

First off: CNN is so liberal that Larry King postponed an interview with Michael Moore in favour of Paris Hilton.

It is so liberal that just prior to the Michael Moore interview, they ran a minute long hitpeace that lied about what was included in Michael Moore’s latest movie (How much Cubans pay for healthcare. CNN obviously didn’t watch the movie before critiquing it.)

Yep, that is yer liberal media. Next you will be calling Time Magazine liberal, you know that same Time Magazine that named Bush man of the year in 2004.

Your liberal media myth is simply a construct you build to hide yourself from the facts. Instead of confronting your ignorance, you run to a news channel that defended its right to lie to its viewers in court.

  369. Bruce Gorton says:

    The defining wings:

Basically, there are four different sections of the bird of the body politic:

You have the wings. Left wing is in favour of change, rightwing is against it.

When the rightwing is stronger then the left, you get Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, and just about any evil dictator, communist or fascist, you can think of. This is because the rightwing views power as an end in and of itself, and is highly suspicious of change.

When the leftwing is stronger then the right, you get anarchy.

When the wings are too small (In other words, not enough differences exist between them) you get stagnation. The bird in essence doesn’t fly.

There are however, two other “wings.” The beak, and the backside. The beak looks to the here and now, to make sure that everyone gets fed, everyone gets a say, and that today’s problems get solved.

The beak is what is termed a progressive: Progressive’s look at health care, see a problem, and want it to be fixed. That the solution is leftwing is beside the point, it is basically needed.

The backside on the other hand, is your neocon movement. They don’t actually look forward to anything, only back on some golden age which never existed. While the progressive looks to how to make the here and now better, the neocon looks towards shitting all over America’s legacy.

  370. leftcoast says:

    #370-
    Bruce- nice piece.
Here is something I found on the baseless claim that the media is liberal.

Conservatives often promote the myth that the U.S. media are liberal. This myth serves several purposes: it raises public skepticism about liberal news stories, hides conservative bias when it appears, and goads the media to the right. GOP strategist William Kristol also reveals another reason: “I admit it: the liberal media were never that powerful, and the whole thing was often used as an excuse by conservatives for conservative failures.”

The fact is that conservatives have powerful friends in the media: the corporations that own them, and the corporations that pay for their advertising. These giant firms have been increasingly successful in bending the media’s message to suit their self-interests, which include a conservative and pro-corporate agenda.

The potential for abuse by corporate owners is obvious. Just one example was General Electric’s earlier buyout of NBC News. General Electric is the 10th largest company in the United States. It is a major Defense contractor and an international player on the world market.

Shortly after the company acquired NBC, a GE executive announced that NBC should start a political action committee to contribute money to strengthen the company’s influence in Washington. Failure to cooperate, the executive said, would raise questions about the employees’ “dedication to the company.”

I don’t want to ruin your metaphor, but I wonder if the neocon might be the brain of the bird.

And just so I make this clear, the [freedom operation] in Iraq has actually undermined the global war on terror. They are creating more terrorists than they are getting rid of. We should NOT, i think, be refferring to the effort to instill Democracy in Iraq as a WAR. It also does not help when people of religious means refer to it as a WAR against Muslims. It exacerbates and undermines the Democratic effort!!! And to throw out the red herring net. I don’t love the Muslims [I would like to see a more peaceful middle east] and I am not a surrender monkey. I supported the last surge because of the pottery barn rule of you break it you buy it.

And that folks, like it or not, is my heartfelt opinion.

  373. trippin says:

I can imagine nothing more futile than arguing with a zipperhead about whether the media is liberal. We know who owns these big conglomerates. We know who pays them advertising dollars. We don’t need to spend a lot of energy being distracted by this nonsense. Just let them yammer like a baboon unchallenged and they’ll dry up and go away.

  377. Bruce Gorton says:

    Thrasymachos

    Lets see:

Rightwing (Currently tends towards the rear): Keep doing the same things which didn’t work the last 20 times and deny there is actually a problem – while the problem gets worse.

Leftwing: Admit there is a problem as seek solutions to the problem, including phased withdrawal – or total withdrawal and cutting America’s losses.

Rightwing: Attack terrorists by killing people that those same terrorists hate while alienating your allies.

Leftwing: Ask your allies for help in dividing your enemies and helping discredit terrorist leaders. (Bombing a religious nutter’s house won’t discredit the terrorist leader, know what will? Releasing photos of Osama in bed with three male cheerleaders with a bottle of whisky being put to creative use.)

Rightwing: Fire qualified translators for being gay.

Leftwing: Heck, target the gay guys for America’s intellegence services, they have a lot of reasons to not like the religious nutters of the Middle East.

Rightwing: Fire generals who disagree with the administration.

Leftwing: Keep generals who are competent enough to think for themselves and not always agree with the administration.

Rightwing: Assume that soldiers are wussies who are more concerned with their pwecious feelings getting hurt then getting shot.

Leftwing: Assume that soldiers are more concerned with physical damage then emotional.

  378. Menehune says:

Whether you think it’s a good thing or bad, CNN seems to have decided that Hillary is the Democratic candidate already. This morning they aired positive “iReport” clips on Hillary and negative ones on Obama. And they are now pumping up Richardson, not on his own merits, but from the standpoint of how Edwards is in freefall. Is this because CNN’s corporate masters like Hillary or is it because they are “keeping their powder dry” to unleash once she’s up against the Republican candidate post-nomination?

  381. Bruce Gorton says:

    Thrasymachos

Okay, want me to rephrase it so that you can understand it?

    Here we go:

The rightwing approach appears to be to attack the enemies of your enemies. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, so obviously, in a move to avenge 9/11, you invaded Iraq.

Oh, and your homophobia clearly has kept you from figuring out that all of those wire taps you guys have paid hard earned tax dollars for? Not worth much if noone can translate what those terrorists are saying.

  382. eli says:

ckerst: I agree that CNN is looking more like a propagandist megaphone these days and the anchors appear more bird-brained than ever. Concern about their wardrobe and makeup seems to trump all else.

As to the debates, it was a great way to permit some less politically correct questions to be asked and all of the candidates did well in my opinion. Hillary seems to continue to amaze with her ability to articulate her thoughts and think on her feet. During one of her answers I couldn’t help but visually imagine Bush standing there and contrasting what was coming forth from Hillary and what a disaster he would be answering the same question. How did we get this uneducated fool (bush) into the white house in the first place?

The candidates were having fun with the spontaneous format and are definitely presenting america with some great choices for a president in 08. That’s more than I can say for the Republicscumbag candiates at this point.

  383. toasterhead says:

I don’t care who won the debate – I’m still voting for this guy.

  384. Alejandro says:

You may think CNN is becoming too conservative (for you), but they are probably responding to this:

    http://rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/americans_see_liberal_media_bias_on_tv_news

Whether you agree or not, most Americans understand that the media is (and has been for a long time) biased towards liberalism.

Cooper did a good job last night. The debate wasn’t the usual love fest with softballs. A more objective press will actually help democrats in the long run. In the short run, however, it will be difficult as democrats are pressed to find answers for their failed policies.

  386. Jo-Ann says:

I give Carol Costello props for not letting Blitzer slam Hillary for wearing that coat. She said Hillary looked hip and feminine. Blitzer isn’t too fond of women, and Hillary in particular. He’s become a pawn for Repug talking points and is not a serious news man. He’s merely a news reader. He could make important news, but doesn’t invite controversy. Ted Turner, 27 years ago, had just the opposite philosophy in mind when he started that news format. We’re all the poorer for the cop out by CNN.

Try again. I know you can do better.

  389. Bruce Gorton says:

    paul

Americans see the press as being too liberal because…

The press tells Americans that it is too liberal.

That Americans, the same guys who voted for Bush twice despite the fact that his second term campaign consisted of “I am a screw-up, I couldn’t take him in a debate, but, heh, heh Kerry looks like Lurch,” think it is too conservative is meaningless.

What America needs is a press couldn’t care less about whether it is “too liberal” and is more concerned with the very liberal media ideology of “The media must report the news.”

    As to liberal policy failures?

Right now you righties have had 6 years of ultimate power, what did you achieve? Record deficits, doubling America’s debt, a stock market which is still recording 5 year highs, a major city in ruins, and 9/11, which is bizarrely treat as though it is some sort of victory for the party which held ultimate power over America for 9 months prior to it happening.

And you think the leftwing needs to take a long hard look at its policies? Pfft.

I’m syndicating this from the other thread because you’re a moron.

Approval ratings are a different type of survey. When you ask repondents whether they personally approve or disapprove of a public policy or politician, that’s pure opinion. There’s nothing else that can prove or disprove that – it’s what they believe.

When you ask people if they think a network or “the media” is biased, they’re going to give their answer based on what they’ve heard or read. I doubt that most respondents have actually sat there watching various networks with a clipboard making ticks in a “liberal” and “conservative” column whenever a journalist made a statement with a partisan slant, or that they have done studies on the number of conservative or liberal think tanks cited. They’re giving an opinion-based answer on a quantifiable topic that they are very likely unqualified to answer.

Does anyone remember the dialogue between the 2 reporters at the parade in Goldie Hawn’s hometown in the movie Protocol? It is almost identical to this, it was something like “Sunny is wearing some kind of “frock” I guess you’d call it and the vice president is wearing a suit”.

  397. Flaky Foont says:

Whether you agree or not, most Americans understand that the media is (and has been for a long time) biased towards liberalism.

That is a falsity. The media is centrist. They are corporate. They play both sides of the fence. They will repeat whatever makes news ad nasueum. They like to create controversy. It sells. Sex sells, is that liberal? Or is that just capitalism? Why would free market Capitalists have to use sex? To Exploit you desires. An overweight 60 year old man smoking a cigar while reading the stocks doesn’t sell. Rush calls himself a conservative but he exploited himself with a desire for drugs. He is no more a conservative than Paris Hilton.

Capitalism is exploitative. You want to smoke cigarettes and die of cancer, here ya go, smoke my brand like the sexy women do. You want to drink alcohol? Here drink my brand with the sexy woman on the billboard, don’t blame me when your livers keels over. You want to see naked women? Here read Playboy or Penthouse, but don’t blame me when you become a pervert. You want pornography? Here look at these women having sex, whack your brain out, take some viagra. Want a prostitute? Call the DC Madam, she’ll be happy to exploit your desires. But don’t blame her when you caught with a diaper on.
The media is not a government watchdog group. There is nothing that says that they have to digg up and report government corruption.

  398. paul says:

toasterhead and everyone else here. you tell me that: “80 percent of Americans believe in little green men from Mars also. That doesn’t make it so.”

Do you think about what you’re saying. Isn’t it ironic that the almost 80% disapproval rating of the war or of the Presidents performance (which is touted here every day) equals the majority that you admit believe in little green men. If it doesn’t make it so, you’d better tell everyone here at TP, so they can dismiss the polling.

You say that those who believe the liberal bias are naively accepting the lies being propagated by talk radio. Where do you think the 75% of people who disapprove of the war get their information. Have all these Americans seen the war in Iraq firsthand? Probably not. Maybe they get their information and formulate their opinions by consuming a diet of less than objective print and television media. But, you confidently promote that the same well informed public that overwelmingly disapproves of the war, is also naive enough to be conned into believing the right wing dogma of liberal bias in the media. My life would be much easier if I lived in the flippant, selective world you call home.

    Here is the difference:

You Neocons phrase being anti-Iraq-war as being anti-America. That the majority of Americans are anti-Iraq-war simply neatly demonstrates that you guys on the right like talking out of your asses. The majority of Americans aren’t anti-America.

The media? The media is a collection of large corporations which are not liberal in the least. Think about the huge stink you neocons throw whenever a liberal mentions the idea of a fairness doctrine: It would take away your propaganda vehicle and you know it.

  401. paul says:

Republicans object to the fairness doctrine because it is an assault on free speech. Someone has to save you from yourselves (and communism). You’re welcome.

  402. Bruce Gorton says:
