Feingold: Right-Wing ‘Stunts’ On Iraq Are ‘Killing Americans’

Last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) held the Senate open for an all-night debate on Iraq, calling the conservatives’ bluff on the filibuster and highlighting “Republican resistance to allowing a simple majority vote on a plan to withdraw troops from Iraq.”

The conservative leadership quickly blasted Reid’s move as a political stunt. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said, “Our enemies aren’t threatened by talk-a-thons, and our troops deserve better than publicity stunts.”

As Atrios pointed out, today, Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) hit back against McConnell, declaring that the “only stunt” that’s going on is conservatives who are enabling the Iraq war to continue:

The only that is going on here is by Republicans in the Senate who have continued to fabricate excuses for this Iraq war, year after year. They have been enablers of this tragedy. They have not shown the guts in most cases and vote to end this war. They will use every excuse, every slogan, every political trick to not let us end this war, so I would call that the stunt, and that’s the stunt that’s killing Americans.

Transcript:

BLITZER: When I spoke yesterday with the Republican leader, the Minority leader, Mitch McConnell, in the Senate, he said, it’s precisely these kinds of — what he would characterize as stunts, political stunts, whether an all-night debate involving Iraq or motion of censure, which is why the approval number — the job approval number — of Congress is even lower than it is for the President of the United States. Instead of focusing in on substantive issues, you’re focusing on political theater. What would you say to McConnell?

FEINGOLD: The only stunt that is going on here is by Republicans in the Senate who have continued to fabricate excuses for this Iraq war, year after year. They have been enablers of this tragedy. They have not shown the guts in most cases and vote to end this war. They will use every excuse, every slogan, every political trick to not let us end this war, so I would call that the stunt, and that’s the stunt that’s killing Americans. Not what I’m talking about.

  3. Patriots says:

    Thanks Feingold.

What congress and the people need at this point are dozens of Federal State and Local Prosecutors that have experience dealing with the mafia.

  4. Thrasymachos says:

    No. More like Left-wing theatrics…

    Wrong again, Russy!

  5. stopthecons says:

He’s absolutely right. People are getting maimed and killed every single day…and for what? So Bush and his boys can have more power and profits?

This war is completely immoral, illegal and ruinous, and has been since the day it started.

The time to end this insanity is now. Not next year and not in the fall. Today, not tomorrow….now.

Still with that rusty talking point.

Withdrawal =/= surrender. Please get that through your head, for everybody’s sake.

  7. Frank J says:

Withdrawal can not only be characterized as surrender but as retreat, fleeing, running away, cowardly, Clinton-like, French. You pick how you want to spin it.

  8. Namtillaku says:

You can’t surrender or retreat from an occupation, only stop the oppression.

  9. had enough says:

The neocons will continue with their stunts as long as they can continue to hide behind the skirts of the mainstream media.

  10. PaulB says:

You pick how you want to spin it.

We will, dear. Fortunately, the American people don’t really care how we “spin” it; they just want us out of Iraq.

  11. PaulB says:

The neocons will continue with their stunts as long as they can continue to hide behind the skirts of the mainstream media.

Well, that’s kind of what the “stunt” was all about — to make the obstructionism so bloody obvious that it could no longer be ignored. McClatchy definitely picked up on it; I’m not sure whether everyone else did. We’ll just have to see whether the “stunt” had its intended effect or not.

You’ve got it exactly backwards. Republicans & BushCo have created a more dangerous world by the occupation of Iraq, while using fear to disrupt Americas attention of what’s really happening.

You are living in a dream world.

  16. spit take says:

Russ Feingold is one of a very few true leaders this nation has right now.

Of course, it’s easier to be articulate when you have a clear idea of what to say, and you’re right.

  17. Trekkie says:

Republicans are saving civilian Americans from attacks here

Yawn – yeah, cause a bunch of guys who think attacking an Army base full of armed soldiers is a godd idea are really threatening…

while terror organizations focus on disrupting Coalition efforts in Iraq.

You might want to read the intelligence reports that show that a very small fraction of the attacks in Iraq are by “terrorists”. Most are by the ethnic factions that want us to get the hell out of their country.

  18. Chimp says:

  29. leftcoast says:

THEATRICS: Bush and Cheney’s fraudulent misrepresentations about the true state of affairs in Iraq was designed to convince the public to believe that Iraq presented an imminent threat. They needed to convince the public that there was a dire emergency in order to convince Congress to authorize funds for the war. This scheme of misrepresentation obstructed the workings of government in a critical way — it caused the most serious of governmental decisions to be made upon false information.

WASHINGTON — The FBI’s counterterrorism unit has launched a broad investigation of US-based theft rings after discovering that some of the vehicles used in deadly car bombings in Iraq, including attacks that killed US troops and Iraqi civilians, were probably stolen in the United States, according to senior government officials.

You do realize, don’t you, that any aid the Iranians are providing to Iraqis goes to Shia, and that Saudi Arabia supports the Sunni insurgency, right? And that the Sunnis are responsible for the bulk of the attacks on American soldiers? Maybe that’s because we deposed their guy and opened the door for the majority Shia to take power. Oops.

The Hillary exit plan debate has sharp political subtleties
If Cheney and Rumsfeld had not, in what is called an act of depraved indifference, blocked plans and strategies by State, CIA and the Military to prepare for worst case scenarios before engaging in Iraq, America would today have a third less casualties.
When Hillary says where is the plan, which of course the Military has game-played for ten different scenarios, she is saying that America will not again tolerate political operatives to force our Military into incompetent alternatives.
Hillary is stating that America does not want a White House political opinion or worse yet a Bush/Cheney political plan. Congress and the troops deserve a set of plans, in hand now thank you very much, created by the best minds so that the withdrawal will neither be delayed nor botched to give political advantage to the creators of this mess.
Military planning will indicate how many deaths, how much cost and what time frame(s) their withdrawal plans indicate.
Knowing the Military’s best estimates makes the overall cost of withdrawal more of a factual matter and less open to Bush/Cheney/Rove fear mongering, propaganda and general political sloganeering.

Reagan- Beruit Embassy and Barracks attacked resulting in hundreds of American deaths. RESPONSE- attack Grenada.

Bush43-911- Almost Three Thousand killed from NY to DC to Pennsylvania. RESPONSE- Send in a small group of troops into Afghanistan and then pull out most of them to attack Iraq. Bin Laden, Leader of the Republican party, still at large.

It’s pretty clear from the pattern here that these folks could care less about your own safety or the troops own safety and more about giving sound bites and telling you to keep those flags waving.

We should not forget the commitment made towards the U.N. Millennium Goals (a pact of ending extreme world hunger by the year 2025) in 2000. While the U.S. government and media keep focusing on defense policies and the war in Iraq, 1.2 billion people in the world continue surviving on less than $1 dollar a day. According to The Borgen Project, an annual $19 billion dollars is needed to eliminate half of the extreme poverty affecting the world by the year 2015. To my sense, it is almost unacceptable to have spent so far more than $340 billion in Iraq only, when we have more than war immunities to change the world and eliminate poverty.

Wrong, “r”. I didn’t claim it was “just jokes and fun”. I said I was responding to your post in which you identified a heterosexual man getting oral sex from a woman as preverted. In that context, I think it’s safe to assume that one who considered such an act as perverted would also consider gay sex perverted, likely more so.

However, if I misjudged you and you consider a woman giving head to a man perverted but gay sex not, then you have an argument. Is that the case? Because I used what I assumed to be your standards, not my own.

Republicans are saving civilian Americans from attacks here, while terror organizations focus on disrupting Coalition efforts in Iraq.

    Comment by paul

What republicans? Are you signing up to go help “save Americans from attacks here”? Have you met an Iraqi? Have you loaded you buddies on an evacuation helicopter?

I am sick and tired of the rhetoric which consists of two things:
    1. Fear – that they have been peddling since 2002
    2. The troops as a talking point

When I went over there, I was fed a bunch of BS of how we were going so that people could be safe and wouldn’t have to live in fear – while I am gone fighting for that security, the Bush administration has worked its butt off to make sure every American is living in fear. The “terrorists” could never have done that. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself”. When you live in fear, you abandon all reason.

It is easy to sit behind your keyboard saying how awesome it is that our military is kicking but over there. Using the colloquial “we” that one refers to when they talk about their favorite sports team. Well paul, this isn’t your favorite sports team, and their is no “We”. There are those willing to give there lives for this what this country stands for, and those that are willing to sit on their a**and send them there so they can feel some sort of warped pride.

This isn’t a game. There are no clear rules. It doesn’t matter how many battles we win. We have won every military battle (and many are very bloody, but I would be surprised if you knew that), and all that does is rally more Iraqis to the cause of the insurgents. Every day that we stay there when the majority of Iraqis want us out, is a day that someone else sees us as conquerers instead of liberators. One more day that Al Qaeda is transformed into the liberators.

If you think this occupation is sooo noble, then I hope you are on your way to sign up for the military. The military is short handed and needs your help. But no, you probably will sit there and keep saying “we” are winning, and “we” need to stay!! Well, paul, there is no “we” there are “US” (the ones who care for the ideals of this country and try to protect it on AND OFF the battle field) and their is YOU who likes to sit and cheer while others do the heavy lifting.

Ok Merlin, you want me to think you’re acting as bad as them.

Just say you agree that based on posted comments:

Zooey said the recruits are BAIT.
Walt The Man disparaged one ethnic group vs. another.
Mickey r equated homosexuals to PERVERTS.
And here I’ll expand for the sake of answering mikey r”

(sorry I don’t have the exact text) Somebody tossed out the word PERVERT against the GOP. And I said, no, the pervert is Bill Clinton with his blue dress and cigar as show and tell (mickey r – I wish you hadn’t made me repeat that part).

Then mickey r countered with 3 republicans who he says are homosexuals and a diaper fetish guy are PERVERTS. I think this is the context.

And then they all claimed it was just fun and jokes amongst the locals. Dirty stinky stupid unqualified outsiders like me wouldn’t understand.

    Ok.

    They = Bolsheviks
    We = Mensheviks

It’s a sad fact, but when it comes down to it they don’t want any outside opinions… too much reality spoils their mood.

What is wrong with everyone. This thread is about a great senator who continuously brings up great points. Has been right all along, and has the guts to stand up and shout what everyone needs to hear.

Instead, everyone on the thread has turned it into a sexual preference or sexual deviant thread. Apparently the 4-6 American Soldiers dying EVERY DAY is not important enough to stay on topic. Apparently the stripping of our rights and everything that those soldiers fought for, in the name of fear, is OK.

Everyday, I worry about the country that I loved. An idea I thought would end up being a guiding light to the rest of the world (once we worked out all the bugs). I hoped this country would be an example of tolerance, acceptance, and freedom. How much worse does it have to get before people wake up – or before it is important enough to stay on topic?

‘Feingold holds town hall meetings/listening sessions in EVERY voting district in Wisconsin at least once a year. He gets an earfull from both democrats and republicans. He knows that The voters are way ahead of the politicians on this one. The voters know we are in a Quagmire , and you can’t fight terrorism when you’re up to your eyeballs in Mud.’

Russ Feingold is the only senator in Washington with the balls to say what the rest are all afraid to….and I am proud that he is from Wisconsin. Go Russ – don’t let the bastards win!

    DanCaveman,

You get my nomination for the most coherent and logical poster. Please don’t let the trolls drive you away from the site.

I admire you for your service in Iraq, and for your heartfelt and right on posts.

The men and women dying in Iraq for political reasons don’t seem to be in the equation at all. Bush and the Boyz are hellbent on staying the course until Bush leaves office and they can lay the blame on the Democrats.

It is a big game to these people, and to so many of the Bush supporters it’s my team vs your team, right or wrong. Weak and stubborn like Bush, they can’t admit their Dear Leader is a total failure.

We are going to leave Iraq at some point, and we will have done the best we could with the deck stacked against us. Prolonging the inevitable is criminal in my mind, and the Decider and his supporters have death and dismemberment on their souls.

May they all rot in Hell.
