Gingrich’s Advice To Bush On Iraq: ‘Simply Be Quiet, Say Nothing’

gingrichfinger.jpgThis morning, Steve Thomma of McClatchy wrote that “When pressing a tough sale, Bush is a lousy salesman.” “He’s never really sold the country or Congress something it didn’t already want. And when he’s tried to sell something the people or the politicians didn’t want, he’s fallen flat,” wrote Thomma.

Thomma’s thesis gained a high profile supporter earlier today: Newt Gingrich. Speaking at an American Spectator breakfast, the former Speaker of the House offered some words of advice for how President Bush can gain support for the Iraq war — “Simply be quiet, say nothing:”

Newt Gingrich is offering President Bush some interesting advice about winning support for the Iraq war: The president, he says, should stop talking about it. “Simply be quiet, say nothing” is what the former Republican leader is urging. Mr. Bush instead should leave the war talk to General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker, who have much more credibility with both Democrats and Republicans. [...]

“Petraeus and Crocker will get a better deal on Iraq than Bush, and it will be much harder for the Democrats to oppose Petraeus and Crocker,” Mr. Gingrich said.

This isn’t the first time Gingrich has suggested that silence is the best route for conservatives to push their agenda. In May, Gingrich advised his fellow right wingers to avoid talking about Iraq, Katrina, Walter Reed, the U.S. attorneys, and Bush:

Well, President Bush is not the future. He’s not a solution…The Republicans have to say, this is not what we want to debate. It’s not in Baghdad, it’s not in Katrina, it’s not at Walter Reed, it’s not with the U.S. attorneys.

While it may be refreshing to see Bush “simply be quiet,” not talking about Iraq is hardly a solution. The U.S. needs to set a course towards a responsible redeployment out of the middle of a bloody civil war.

Should he go so far as denying that he ever authorized the invasion of Iraq? It might sound outlandish, but we all know he’s capable of it.

“Iraq? I’m not familiar with the place. I wasn’t at any of the meetings where it was discussed. You’ll have to talk to Gen. Petreaus abot it. i’m kinda out of the loop. Heh heh heh.”

    This is fact.

The other fact is that Bush won the popular vote by 2.7%, which is the smallest margin of victory by an incumbent since 1828. He was a “wartime” incumbent and still managed to squeak by — and his approval ratings have been crashing ever since.

This administration is easily the most secretive in history.

In fact, I would argue that Bush’s poling is so low BECAUSE of his secretiveness and silence. Maybe Bush should finally just come clean and start telling the truth to the American people. We may not like it but at least he will shed the image of being a secretive and manipulative liar who doesn’t care about the constitution OR the will of the people.

    Call Congress Today for Impeachment

We’ve reached the impeachment moment for Vice President Dick Cheney. We’ve pushed the cosponsor list for H. Res. 333 up to 14. Chairman John Conyers says that if we get 3 more he’ll begin the impeachment proceedings.

And many Congress Members must be recognizing that there is no other path available. Cheney and Bush have repeatedly refused to comply with subpoenas, ordered former staffers not to comply, and announced that the Justice Department will not enforce contempt citations from Congress. When a special prosecutor attempted to hold this administration accountable, Cheney’s chief of staff obstructed justice, and Cheney persuaded Bush to commute his sentence. There is no course left for Congress but Impeachment.

On Monday, July 23rd, the fifth anniversary of the meeting that produced the Downing Street Minutes, Cindy Sheehan, Ray McGovern, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Ann Wright, Debra Sweet, Dave Lindorff, David Swanson, Jodie Evans, Medea Benjamin, Kevin Zeese, and Tina Richards will lead a march to Chairman Conyers office and not leave until he agrees to begin impeachment proceedings.

If you cannot be there, you can take two minutes on Monday and do two things: phone Chairman Conyers at 202-225-5126 and ask him to start the impeachment of Dick Cheney; and phone your own Congress Member at 202-224-3121 and ask them to immediately call Conyers’ office to express their support for impeachment. Your Congress Member might be one of the three needed, not just to keep impeachment activists out of jail but to keep this nation from devolving into dictatorship.

Clinton did not lie under oath. He was found not guilty. A judge later ruled that it was immaterial anyway and therefore could not be perjury if he did.

  119. Keith G says:

Bush only won in 2004 if you believe the machines made by Republican companies who refuse to allow them to be examined.

Exit polls of over 70,000 voters said Kerry won by 3.0% or three million votes. They are accurate to about 0.2%. It is extremely impossible for them to be off by 3.0%

Gingrich’s strategy is a basic marketing strategy — one that any first-year marketing student learns. You play down the negatives associated with your product (that would be Bush, Cheney, the war in Iraq, U.S. Attorneys, Katrina, Walter Reed, etc.), and you play up the positives.

So this means Repub candidates should focus on the positive things that Bush, Cheney, and the GOP have done for the country. This list would include: tax cuts for the rich (no – we need something the middle class can get behind), prescription drug coverage for Medicare recipients (Ok, this one’s better, but there are a bunch of elderly people out there whose heads are still spinning from trying to figure that whole thing out), and…and…and… (somebody want to help me out here?)

Poll: American Support for War Inches Up (Rats,”stop the surge, it’s working and we might win”)
    nytimes

American support for the war in Iraq has risen somewhat as the White House has continued to ask the public to reserve judgment about the war until General David Petraeus files his report in the fall. In a New York Times/CBS News poll conducted over the weekend, 42 percent of Americans said taking military action in Iraq was the right thing to do, while 51 percent said the United States should have stayed out of Iraq. Support had been at all time low in May, when only 35 percent of Americans said the United States’ involvement in Iraq was the right thing and 61 percent said the United States should have stayed out. Still, the latest poll made clear that a two-thirds majority of Americans continue to say the war is going badly. However, the number of people who say the war is going “very badly” has fallen from 45 percent earlier in July to a current reading of 35 percent, and of those who say it is going well, 29 percent now describe it as “somewhat well” compared to 23 percent just last week.

There has lately been an alarming rise in diaries and comments that seek to impugn (without evidence) the motives of those they disagree with on various issues.

Yes, there’s the impeachment stuff, but this nasty rhetoric is also rampant in the primary war diaries.

This points to a serious breakdown not just on civility, but in the ability of people to properly debate various issues. As such, it presents a serious threat to the integrity of this site.

I much prefer it when the community moderates itself, and for the most part it does a good job of this. The libertarian in me prefers it that way. But sometimes, self-moderation isn’t enough. I’ll act swiftly and mercilessly when I’m pushed into defending the effectiveness of this site. And at this moment, my patience is wearing thin.

Reasonable people, including progressives, can disagree on many of the big issues we face today — from which candidate to support in the primary, to whether impeachment is the best way to hold this administration accountable, to the merit of gun control or free trade agreements, to how to handle immigration, to whatever else faces our nation. As a site, we strive to provide a safe haven for debate on these matters without it getting — as has happened of late — so damn ugly.

This is my one and only warning on the matter. I’ll try to be an optimist and hope that this is the last time I’ll have to address it. I won’t let this site become as nasty as your typical usenet forum, and those who encourage that sort of environment should consider themselves duly warned.

Update: And no, Bush won’t cancel the next round of elections to remain in power. That’s about the most ridiculous conspiracy theory I’ve seen in a long time. Some people on our side can be just as “out there” as the “black helicopter” crowd.

No, Gen. Petraus has no credibility with the left wing lunatics. why? becausee Gen. Petraus said that our troops can win in Iraq and there is NOTHING greater than the left wing lunatics hate than our military being succesfull at anything.

The left wants America to lose, a fact that they love to deny.

I have to agree, Iraqis need to take responsability for their country and stop relying on the USA to take care of all their problems. AT the same time, how long did it take the United States of America to be a full, self-supporting Democracy?

think about that when you are calling on America to leave Iraq.

Furthermore, for those of you that say that the USA should get involved in Darfur because of genocide…..will you ask the USA to re-enter the Iraq theater if we leave and then it turns into a full fledge genocide?

What will the left do when Iraq turns into genocide country, will they demand that the USA re-enters to stop the genocide?

The paper trail will concur with the hacked results inside – so, duh?? Also, if using the infamous “optiscanners” to calcuate the marked paper ballots, guess what? The optiscanners have software which is hackable.

So, I suppose it could be said that our 08 election will be hacked – again! The “fix” is probably already in.

President Bush has spent $340 billion to date on the war in Iraq. 233. jmanh54 says:

Bush is unable, or perhaps unwilling, to explain the real reasons underlying his actions. He keeps repeating a few focus-group tested mantras like “we’re fighting them there so we don’t have to fight them here.” He tries to maintain his “straight shooter” image but, when it comes to Iraq, he seems content to repeat a set of flimsy, highly theoretical arguments. I think that people want to really understand why the country needs to continue to pour so much of its blood and treasure into the Iraq venture. Given the costs, one would think the rationale would be concise, concrete, and air-tight — but it’s the opposite.
