Iraq vets sue Bush administration.

A coalition of injured Iraq war veterans filed a class action law suit charging outgoing Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson “of breaking the law by denying them disability pay and mental health treatment.” The lawsuit asks federal court to “order the VA to make immediate improvements that would speed disability payments, ensure fairness in awards and provide more complete access to mental health care.”

House Committee to Vote on Contempt Charges
Washington Post Staff Writer Monday, July 23, 2007

The House Judiciary Committee will vote Wednesday on whether to hold current and former White House officials in contempt of Congress, signaling that Democratic lawmakers intend to press toward a constitutional showdown with the Bush administration over last year’s firings of nine U.S. attorneys.

Today’s announcement by Judiciary Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) puts House Democrats on a legal collision course with the White House, which said last week that it would not allow the Justice Department to pursue contempt charges brought by Congress.

…Conyers said the decision to move forward with contempt proceedings was made reluctantly, but asserted that the committee had few options in the face of the refusals by the White House to comply with committee subpoenas.

“It is still my hope that they will reconsider this hard-line position, and cooperate with our investigation so that we can get to the bottom of this matter,” Conyers said.

***More stalling and delaying by Conyers. The Contempt charge should’ve been made TODAY. And only INHERENT CONTEMPT is acceptable. Criminal Contempt is a brick wall. We need to flood Conyers with calls until his phones shut down and demand INHERENT CONTEMPT. 1-202-225-5126.

    Call Congress Today for Impeachment

We’ve reached the impeachment moment for Vice President Dick Cheney. We’ve pushed the cosponsor list for H. Res. 333 up to 14. Chairman John Conyers says that if we get 3 more he’ll begin the impeachment proceedings.

And many Congress Members must be recognizing that there is no other path available. Cheney and Bush have repeatedly refused to comply with subpoenas, ordered former staffers not to comply, and announced that the Justice Department will not enforce contempt citations from Congress. When a special prosecutor attempted to hold this administration accountable, Cheney’s chief of staff obstructed justice, and Cheney persuaded Bush to commute his sentence. There is no course left for Congress but Impeachment.

On Monday, July 23rd, the fifth anniversary of the meeting that produced the Downing Street Minutes, Cindy Sheehan, Ray McGovern, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Ann Wright, Debra Sweet, Dave Lindorff, David Swanson, Jodie Evans, Medea Benjamin, Kevin Zeese, and Tina Richards will lead a march to Chairman Conyers office and not leave until he agrees to begin impeachment proceedings.

If you cannot be there, you can take two minutes on Monday and do two things: phone Chairman Conyers at 202-225-5126 and ask him to start the impeachment of Dick Cheney; and phone your own Congress Member at 202-224-3121 and ask them to immediately call Conyers’ office to express their support for impeachment. Your Congress Member might be one of the three needed, not just to keep impeachment activists out of jail but to keep this nation from devolving into dictatorship.

Larry: I simply don’t “get” it. What’s going on with Conyers anyway? I guess the Repukes have so much on these guys from their illegal wiretapping that it’s essential “blackmail” at this point. Otherwise, it makes absolutely no sense at all.

One of the things I learned when I served in the U.S. Navy (and I’m sure this applies to ALL of our armed forces) is that when you are the captain of the ship, you are responsible for everything that happens on that ship. Because it’s not humanly possible for you to micromanage all activities, it’s important that you surround himself with lieutenants you can trust and count on. If your ship runs aground at 0300 while you are asleep, you are still responsible. For the skipper to say “that wasn’t my job” is NO excuse — and this is drilled into every recruit.

Maybe if Bush had attended more of his reserve drills, he would know this.

“Ever since Bush created the VA on the day he first took presidential office, he has been absent on watching over his creation.

Yes, I will blame Bush. His Administration was responsible for the horrible living conditions at Walter Reed, which happened, no coincidence here, after he privatized the facilities management. His administration is the administration that has told the VA to not award disability payments for PTSD by claiming that the soldier had a personality disorder before he enlisted. If that’s true, then why did the military let him in in the first place. It is his administration that has underfunded the VA ever since he took office.

Yes, this is the administration that supports our troops. They support our troops as long as they are in Iraq getting killed or maimed, but once they come home, to hell with them.

Oh, I’m impressed. You have a ribbon on your gas hog. If you truly supported the troops you would be fighting to bring them home out of that hellhole that Bush has placed them. If you truly supported the troops you would be screaming about the lack of care they face when they come home maimed and/or mentally disturbed due to all the killing they saw. If you truly supported the troops, you would be over there fighting along side them. Instead you are here at home cowering under your bed because you are so scared of those “islamofaschists” or whatever insult you currently use towards people of the Muslim faith.

#30 Veritas…All we can do is work logically with the information we have.

    (1) Conyers or other members of the Judiciary Committee have been physically threatened (Anthrax, or plane falling from sky which only happens to Democrats).
    (2) Threatened with a verbal attack by 600 neo-conservative radio stations
    (3) Blackmailed with information obtained through illegal wiretap
    (4) Large envelope with money that says “For your Silence”.

Obviously Conyers is hoping and praying that they’ll come forward and work out a “compromise” (Miers testifies but not under oath, no transcript and Conyers has to keep both fingers in his ears while saying I can’t hear you I can’t hear you).

  66. JSchmoAz says:

It is about damn time that the VA was sued. I have been waiting four years for the VA to get off of their backsides with my disability claim.

  67. Duke says:

A major part of the problem lies with Congress. Recognize that our Congress has still not passed but two budget measures to fund the government for FY2007, which ends this September 30th. The two passed were Defense & Homeland Security. The VA is operating on a Continuing Resolution (PL 110-5). This basically means that the VA is limited to spending no more than was allocated for them last year. In most cases, the various departments affected by a CR limit spending to 85% of last FY spending levels. With the increase in maimed veterans returning and entering the VA system, that level of spending will not support the care that these veterans deserve. Dubya is at fault for not demanding Congress pass the appropriations bills. Congress can’t get their head from their arse long enough to do anything productive. All of their time is spent in political posturing. The MSM doesn’t care about Congress inaction on funding bills.

Congress should all be recalled for failure to perform their Constitutional duties. The Administration should face recall for allowing it to happen. All Dubya had to do was Veto PL 100-5 and tell Congress to do your damn job and send a real budget.

In the meantime, the veterans are screwed and they don’t even get kissed.
