Weekly Standard Responds: Kristol Is Far More ‘Respectable’ Than The Netroots

kristol2.jpgOn Fox News Sunday yesterday, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol attacked the upcoming YearlyKos convention and its namesake, DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, as out of the mainstream and “not respectable.”

ThinkProgress, DailyKos, and other progressive blogs responded to Kristol’s baseless charges, pointing out that what Kristol describes “as left is now center” and that the viewpoints of the progressive blogosphere reflect mainstream America.

On the Weekly Standard’s blog today, Sonny Bunch defended his boss by going on the attack, recalling a brusque comment Markos made in 2004, for which he has apologized:

The Daily Kos, Think Progress, and a host of other lefty blogs seem to be shocked that someone might question the respectability of Markos Moulitsas…Is that the kind of thing respectable people say?

ThinkProgress has created a compilation of the highly-esteemed rhetoric of Bill Kristol, presumably the type of language Bunch considers emulatable:

– “It is insane for this country to be obsessing … about a small prisoner abuse scandal,” referring to Abu Ghraib. [5/16/2004]

- “Cheney’s statement” that Ned Lamont’s primary victory helps al Qaeda “is indisputably correct.” [6/13/2006]

- “The voters in Florida, I guess, who elected him” are responsible for former Rep. Mark Foley’s illicit sexual behavior. “Maybe they should have known better.” [10/3/06]

- Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is “sort of the opposite of Lincoln. He would have been with Stephen Douglas in 1858″ in appeasing slave owners. [2/10/07]

- Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) saying the war is lost “is much more disgraceful than anything Trent Lott said” about the country being better off if it had maintained racist segregation policies. [4/22/07]

Bunch seems to consider such commentary to be “the kind of thing respectable people say.”

UPDATE: Atrios notes:

Over the next couple of weeks there will be a grand effort by the wingosphere/conservative pundits/Falafel boy/their mainstream media enablers/etc… to try to undermine Yearly Kos and to marginalize anyone who attends.

UPDATE II: In the Washington Post last week, David Corn laid out Kristol’s less-than -”respectable” record as a shill for the Iraq war.

Digg It!

kristol is a hack for the right wing. Does he merit anything beyond a “yawn”?

  2. Tom says:

Little Billy Kristol is only respectable in the social circles that condone wars-for-oil (e.g., Iraq), dysfunctional government (e.g., the U.S. 2001 to current) and smirking, swaggering, ignorant cowboy-presidents (e.g., GDumbya).

Beyond that small circle of dead-enders, Kristol could drink Drano and die. It would be a good thing.

I love how Reid’s comment “the war is lost” is always truncated to leave out the “if we stay on the present course” clause that preceded it. Everybody spins, but nobody does it with such unabashed intent to deceive as the Republicans.

    Call Congress Today for Impeachment

We’ve reached the impeachment moment for Vice President Dick Cheney. We’ve pushed the cosponsor list for H. Res. 333 up to 14. Chairman John Conyers says that if we get 3 more he’ll begin the impeachment proceedings.

And many Congress Members must be recognizing that there is no other path available. Cheney and Bush have repeatedly refused to comply with subpoenas, ordered former staffers not to comply, and announced that the Justice Department will not enforce contempt citations from Congress. When a special prosecutor attempted to hold this administration accountable, Cheney’s chief of staff obstructed justice, and Cheney persuaded Bush to commute his sentence. There is no course left for Congress but Impeachment.

On Monday, July 23rd, the fifth anniversary of the meeting that produced the Downing Street Minutes, Cindy Sheehan, Ray McGovern, Rev. Lennox Yearwood, Ann Wright, Debra Sweet, Dave Lindorff, David Swanson, Jodie Evans, Medea Benjamin, Kevin Zeese, and Tina Richards will lead a march to Chairman Conyers office and not leave until he agrees to begin impeachment proceedings.

If you cannot be there, you can take two minutes on Monday and do two things: phone Chairman Conyers at 202-225-5126 and ask him to start the impeachment of Dick Cheney; and phone your own Congress Member at 202-224-3121 and ask them to immediately call Conyers’ office to express their support for impeachment. Your Congress Member might be one of the three needed, not just to keep impeachment activists out of jail but to keep this nation from devolving into dictatorship.

    “SCREW THEM:” NOT A JOKE

    By Michelle Malkin • April 1, 2005 03:41 PM

A year ago today, left-wing blogger and Democratic strategist Markos Moulitsos Zuniga of the Daily Kos cheered the brutal murders of four American civilian contractors in Fallujah–all of them war veterans with distinguished records, three of them fathers–with the following infamous words:

    “Screw them.”

  15. loretta says:

you took the words right out of my mouth, spit take.
Unless, of course, respectability means never having to say you’re sorry for supporting convicted former executive aides, treasoners, pedophiles, holier-than-thou customers of brothels, homophobic born-again closeted homosexuals, indicted former congressmen, and Ken Lay types, of course.

  16. Perry Logan says:

The Right are respectable in the same sense Macbeth was respectable.

  17. loretta says:

    to Eck & Michelle Malkin:
civilian contractors going into Iraq are all given four or five times normal pay for operations inside a war zone…..does no one get it that you’ll probably be killed if you go there? The difference is that our men & women in uniform, the underpaid and under equipped “volunteer army” can’t take a pass when ordered there…..

Well, burning and hanging them seemed the better idea. Former decorated veterans should know better than to commit murder and abandon their families for the Bush Cabal. They got and deserved exactly what they asked for.

  22. Erica says:

It is disheartening to hear that Bill Kristol is so outspoken on issues that should be taken more seriously; especially poverty. Every 3.6 seconds that politicians bicker with one another, another person dies of Starvation [Borgen Project]. How sad is that? Especially if all it takes is 19 billion dollars (compared the 540 billion spent on military security) to end malnutrition and starvation worldwide. These real issues should be the focus of these politicians, regardless of how far left or right they stand on.

  23. mikey r says:

Thanks for that diversionary tactic, “The Hack”. And from no less a “respectable” source than the ever-sober and reasoned Michelle Malkin!

I’m sure that the quote she pulled did not come out of contexst in any way, and that Kos literally “cheered” those deaths as MM so even-handedly states.

Thanks again. Your contributions really help line my cat box.

  29. Angry One says:

At the Weekly Standard, long-time Iraq war cheerleader Bill Kristol proclaimed in June that the surge is working “better than expected.” A chickenhawk himself who never served in the military (unlike Markos), Kristol offered President Bush some martial advice in warding off his surge critics:

“When you find yourself in an ambush, attack into the ambush. Don’t twist and turn in the kill zone, looking for a way to retreat. Especially when the ambush is not a powerful one, and the Democrats’ position (to mix military metaphors) is way overextended.”

    For the details, see:
    “Iraq Surge Wins Rave Reviews.”

  32. HTML Mencken says:

But now his task is not to educate or persuade us. It is to defeat Saddam Hussein. And that will require the president, at times, to mislead rather than to clarify, to deceive rather than to explain….Victory in war, over the next few weeks or months, will require using the fog of war — creating that fog — to keep Hussein off balance, wishful and confused.”

Andrew Sullivan, the gay British journalist who once edited the New Republic, has castigated Kristol for speaking at a conference that described homosexuality as “the disease it is,” and for his determination to outlaw abortion as the “key to a conservative reformation.”

December 2, 1993 – Leading conservative operative William Kristol privately circulates a strategy document to Republicans in Congress. Kristol writes that congressional Republicans should work to “kill” — not amend — the Clinton plan because it presents a real danger to the Republican future: Its passage will give the Democrats a lock on the crucial middle-class vote and revive the reputation of the party. Nearly a full year before Republicans will unite behind the “Contract With America,” Kristol has provided the rationale and the steel for them to achieve their aims of winning control of Congress and becoming America’s majority party. Killing health care will serve both ends. The timing of the memo dovetails with a growing private consensus among Republicans that all-out opposition to the Clinton plan is in their best political interest. Until the memo surfaces, most opponents prefer behind-the-scenes warfare largely shielded from public view. The boldness of Kristol’s strategy signals a new turn in the battle. Not only is it politically acceptable to criticize the Clinton plan on policy grounds, it is also politically advantageous. By the end of 1993, blocking reform poses little risk as the public becomes increasingly fearful of what it has heard about the Clinton plan.

  33. Adam says:

Ha!!! The weekly standard has a circulation of about 60,000. Dailykos has millions daily. I guess credibility has nothing to do with how many people read your opinions. Women peace groups make an urgent plea to Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton to take immediate action in response to the ongoing indecent and illegal behavior of the Bush administration.

“We want to invoke for them the feminine priorities of nurturing, safety, and justice,” explains Sherry Glaser of Breasts Not Bombs. “The American people are tired of the rising body count and spending $1.8 billion a week on the war in Iraq, and they have made clear their priorities are the health and well being of this nation.”

The groups also choose this form of political theater to symbolize the vulnerability of the Iraqi people, US soldiers, and women and children everywhere, and to represent a culture of nurturance.

…”Last November voters gave a mandate for peace to the new Congress, but Congress, under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi, has not done enough to end the war, and neither has Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton,” says Vicki Leidner of CODEPINK San Francisco, “As women peacemakers we have a special responsibility to ensure that women in power are representing us.”

“We take our lead from women throughout history who have used creative nonviolent actions to reveal the undeniable power of the feminine,” adds Margaret Howe of Breasts not Bombs.

With all due respect, you’re a f*cking idiot.

I don’t know whether you’re too lazy to debate or too intimidated, but it’s cowardly and ignorant to fall back on the pathetic “the left hates America” meme.

We don’t celebrate troop deaths. We mourn them and want them to stop.

The Right, headed by people like Bill Kristol, on the other hand, are utterly indifferent to troop deaths — for political gain. They don’t care how many have to die in order for them to avoid taking responsiblity for this massive foreign policy f*ckup. You see the troops as disposable pawns, and you justify it by reminding yourself that “they volunteered”, as if that gives the President moral authority to override the judgment of their commanders, to extend tours through stop-loss and to lean too heavily on National Guard troops for overseas combat. This war has now taken longer than our involvement in WWII but Bush still treats it like it’s an emergency situation — relying on NG troops, still funding the war through “emergency appropriations” bills so the costs don’t appear in his budget…

Let’s face it — the Left and several prominent Democrats said that this was an unwinnable war from the start, but BushCo and the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress ignored them. They’re the ones who hate America. Their eternal reward will be richly earned.

The ‘righteous Indignation’ over the criticism of the Blackwater-esque contractors who had been decorated soldiers and ‘family men’ before they joined Blackwell or whatever so-called ’security’ (read: Mercenary) company they joined up with and got killed on Company Time ™.

The attacks against Kerry’s decision that he could no longer support the war, even though he originally did support it, coining a new vernacular for changing one’s opinions, rightfully or otherwise: “Flip-Flop”.

Their sudden interest in Joe Lieberman’s loss in the primary, and his win in the General election as an Independant, attacking Democrats for ‘flip-flopping’ on supporting him.

I guess, in their world, doing one ‘good’ thing (in their eyes) excuses you from every single bad thing you’ve ever done. Killed a woman’s career, violated the law by blowing her cover? That’s OK, you Fought for Freedom(tm) and killed a Terrist(tm). Ole Dubya will pardon ya and you can say how ‘unfair’ the sentence was. “I did good, why must I suffer!?”

Hey, since you’re a bible thumper AND you brought up Hitler, here’s some great christian quotes for you:

“My feelings as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God’s truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter. In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was his fight against the Jewish poison. Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross. As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice… And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly, it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people. And when I look on my people I see them work and work and toil and labor, and at the end of the week they have only for their wages wretchedness and misery. When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil, if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom today this poor people are plundered and exposed.”
—Adolf Hitler, speech on April 12, 1922, published in My New Order

“I am now as before a Catholic and will always remain so”
—Adolph Hitler, to Gen. Gerhard Engel, 1941
