Bachmann On Her Trip To Iraq: It’s Like Visiting The ‘Mall Of America’»

Earlier this month, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) traveled to Iraq with a congressional delegation. In an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune, Bachmann said that after her trip, she remains firm in her support for Bush’s escalation:

This month, Bachmann traveled to Iraq, and despite more GOP defections from Bush’s base of support, she returned as firm as ever in her conviction that the war is justified. Al-Qaida, she said, “doesn’t show any signs of letting up.” The congressional delegation met with Gen. David Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq, in one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces.

What was the palace like?

“It’s absolutely huge,” she said. “I turned to my colleagues and said there’s a commonality with the Mall of America, in that it’s on that proportion. There’s marble everywhere. The other thing I remarked about was there is water everywhere. He had man-made lakes all around his personal palace — one for fishing, one for boating.”

In reality, Iraq is nothing like the Mall of America. Bachmann was able to talk only about the palace because she wasn’t allowed to leave the heavily-fortified Green Zone — an area most normal Iraqis aren’t even allowed to enter. According to a report from her trip, skyrocketing violence prevented Bachmann from “meeting any Iraqis, leaving the Green Zone or staying in Iraq overnight. She and other congressional members were required to wear full body armor, including Kevlar helmets, during the entire trip.”

Nevertheless, Bachmann still believes that Congress should support Bush’s escalation. “It hasn’t had a chance to be in place long enough to offer a critique of how it’s working,” she said. Maybe if she had actually been able to leave the Green Zone, she would have been able to speak to some actual Iraqis, 78 percent of whom believe the U.S. presence is making the security situation worse.

Digg It!

  2. Crump's Brother Says:

This is insane… first hand accounts don’t tell the story at all.

Being escorted by our troops to local bazaars so you can buy a rug, and then you get flown out with apache gunships does not make for an accurate account of life in that country.

  3. BlueArkansas Says:

If memory serves, Bachmann’s the same suck-ass who refused for nearly a minute to relinquish Shrub’s shoulder as he attempted to flee his last SOTU. Why should anyone expect this idiot to present a fact-based assessment of anything?

By a strange coincidence, my son was just in the Mall of America. He said it was just like Baghdad! Everyone is wearing helmets and flak vests and armed to the teeth. And that was just because there was a sale on.

Wow! She sure did get a lot of insight during her overnight stay in the palace. Guess that must’ve been one heckuva powerpoint presentation.

So the workings of the Mall of America have finally been made public.

I mean, getting an Apache ride in from the parking lot was fun, and the bombs would make the roller coaster more exciting. But I found the cluster bombs in Camp Snoopy a bit much.

  16. Kyle Says:

Shop til you drop. Or the Mahdi army opens fire. Or Sunni insurgents come a-bombing. Or Al Qaeda in Iraq RPG’s the food court. Funny, I’ve never had to deal with IED’s when I go to the bookstore.

Our taxpayers dollars being spent on Bush bobbleheads. Minnesota ( like CT with Lieberman ) you should hang you collective heads in shame for putting this airhead back in Congress.

    1) She was not put “back” in Congress. It was her first trip and her last.
    2) Only one congressional district elected her. The rest didn’t have any say in the matter. The bible-thumping dickheads seem to have clustered in that district. She will not be re-elected, dickheads notwithstanding.

  18. jmg Says:

Should read Bachmann (R-MN). Michigan (MI) has plenty of disappointing Representatives. Minnesota can keep her.

  19. debkakes Says:

Should change the headline, really. Dipshit that she is, she still should not be misquoted.

  20. swordsbane Says:

This is why I don’t like Dems either. Sooner or later, they step on their own tongues.

She was talking about Husseins palace, not Bagdad or Iraq, and she was describing it’s scope, not weather or not there are terrorists lurking around or how safe it is or if there’s a Snoopy statue there.

Come on people. The Republicans are stupid for a sh*t-load of reasons. We don’t have to invent ones. This is not helping.

  21. tom baker Says:

…of course both trips were the same to ms bachmann - she spent both of them blowing powerful old gop donors in the back of a beemer, which is also how she’ll be spending congress’s summer recess.

  24. Vet Says:

#20 is right that she was commenting on the palace - not the country.

That said — Bachmann is an embarrassment to my state and my country. Hopefully the idiots in her district will give her the boot after her 2-year term in the house.

She IS the nut who grabbed Bush during the SOTUA and wouldn’t let go. She’s 100% certifiable. There are pictures of her hiding in the bushes at a gay pride event, spying on everyone. Cookoo!!!

  27. Merlin Says:

    What was the palace like?

    Bachmann opined:

“It’s absolutely huge,” she said. “I turned to my colleagues and said there’s a commonality with the Mall of America, in that it’s on that proportion. There’s marble everywhere. The other thing I remarked about was there is water everywhere. He had man-made lakes all around his personal palace — one for fishing, one for boating.”

This is tourist talk! Outside the Green Zone people are dying like flies in freezing weather. And all she can talk about is her impression of the palace.

We hired her to take care of this countries business, the people’s business, not gawk at the Green Zone like a tourist in a tourist trap! Come 2008 she will be finding a new job.

And then, to add insult to injury, she spouts neocon talking points that she was taught before she went to Iraq. (backed up and verified, of course, by that stalwart general petraeus.) So of what value was her trip? Oh, yeah, she probably got a $1.oo rug by shopping in the Green Zone

  28. Thrasymachos Says:

    Great job, TP!

That’s how you put some spin on a headline!!!

  29. GodSmoteTheSodomites Says:

Outside the Green Zone people are dying like flies in freezing weather. And all she can talk about is her impression of the palace.

How do you know? Have you been there? Or are you just referring to the reports by leftwing media?

  30. Spudge_Boy Says:

Sorry, I am going to have to call BS on this one TP. She was referring to the palace, which has been converted into an embassy.

She was not talking about Iraq.

There is no doubt in my mind that Saddam’s Palace is ten times nicer than the mall of America.

As far as her discription of Iraq, she said that al Qaida wasn’t giving up. That is 100% true. They won’t ever give up, even if we bomb the planet.

  31. Borat Says:

    Dearest Trolls,
It’s not a miss-quote if TP prints the entire passage of what was said… which they did. The Headline is obviously a commentary on how only a self-involved, delusional sheep such as this nit-wit of a congresswoman could even SAY such a thing to begin with. Palace or no, you’re in a country that is war torn people REAL people dieing all around you. This woman turns to her fellow representatives and says THIS!? REALLY!? That was your profound awakening lady? The palace is like the mall of America…. Great glad it wasn’t a trip wasted.

  38. kabiddle Says:

As much as Ms. Bachmann seems to be into flights of her own fancy it is important to note that she is not from Michigan (MI) but from Minnesota (MN).

  39. evergreen Says:

TP missed the point…it isn’t about malls…..The focus should be on what Bachmann said when she said:
” Al-Qaida doesn’t show any signs of letting up.”

If Al-Qaida is in Iraq at all now….it is all thanks to our invasion that deposed Hussein, who did not allow Al-Qaida in Iraq. But from what I read…the problem is now civil war between Sunni’s and Shite…probably provoked and abetted by our presence as we give money & guns to both sides. sigh.

  53. Britisher Says:

Actually Amanda, your presentation of this story is very badly constructed. Ringo and Kevin are correct in noting your obvious misrepresentation and I urge you not to pull this kind of crap–it is unnecessary.

Amanda writes: What was the palace like?

Bachmann: “I turned to my colleagues and said there’s a commonality with the Mall of America”

Amanda writes: In reality, Iraq is nothing like the Mall of America

Your larger point, Amanda, that Bachmann, like the majority of Bush boosters who visit Iraq and thus profess some relevant experience of it when they never actually gets beyond the Green zone “bubble” ( or have to be escorted by a 100 troops, attack helicopter and dressed in full body armor engage in an elaborate photo-op), and thus their cheery observations are therefore more “true” and “realistic” is a point you could have made without this “sleight of hand” editing.

It doesn’t negate your point, but it by misrepresenting the context, you undermine your point that she (and her ilk) should be taken to task when they misrepresent reality–and in doing so this does nothing for your own credibility. nor by association the credibility of Think Progress–a site which I happen to rate very highly.

No mention of how this safe Green Zone where a bank got robbed of $280 Million American dollars without anyone knowing what happen. I guess Rep Bachmann wasn’t interested in that stolen American money just that the Saddam Palace was like a mall and she could go fishing. Now our troops that are dying everyday mean nothing just that safe mall.

    GodSmoteTheSodomites-
The primary crimes of the Sodomites were repeated economic crimes, both against each other and outsiders. One of the worst was to give money or even gold ingots to beggars, but to inscribe their names on them, and then subsequently refuse to sell them food. However, the unfortunate stranger would not be allowed out of the city, and would end up starving. After his death, the people who gave him the money would reclaim it.

This sounds rather like neo-con behavior.

A neo-conservative (abbreviated as neo-con or neocon) is part of a U.S. based political movement rooted in liberal Cold War anticommunism and a backlash to the social liberation movements of the 1960s and 1970s. These liberals drifted toward conservatism: thus they are new (neo) conservatives. They favor an aggressive unilateral U.S. foreign policy. I don’t believe that America is the cause of all the problems in the world. I doubt anyone here would agree with that. I do think that we shouldnt act as policemen of the world. Democracy suffers when it comes from the end of a barrell. We, under the Republican guidance, have become less like in the world. Democracy is not suffering because of lefties, it’s suffering because were seen as materialistic bullies. Sure we have a big stick to weild, but we should walk softly.
The problem is, I think, that the government is becoming corporatized and no longer functions for the good of the people. Politicians sell themselves to the highest bidders (lobbyists) and special interest groups and see office as a means to riches.

And just like a NeoCon you ignore the FACT that Saudi Arabia is in Iraq also.

Well, I don’t liston to Sean Hannity (He’s on when I’m in school) and yes I have watched the daily show. Although I do find some of it humorous, its not quite my cup of tea (my parents do not restrict my television, especially because of political views…we have what you call discussion..)

Just scroll your fu*king browser up and you will see a one of your troll buddies actually say it is.

Don’t let these Lefties get to you, they live in a fantasy world of peace, flowers, and gum-drops. This is how they think:

Yes, we live in a fantasy world where everybody gets along, unlike what the NeoCons want. Don’t you see that the people you are supporting don’t believe what you do?

That is why you need to grow up. You will soon realize you are nothing like those you apologize for.
