Bachmann On Her Trip To Iraq: It’s Like Visiting The ‘Mall Of America’

Earlier this month, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) traveled to Iraq with a congressional delegation. In an interview with the Minnesota Star Tribune, Bachmann said that after her trip, she remains firm in her support for Bush’s escalation:

This month, Bachmann traveled to Iraq, and despite more GOP defections from Bush’s base of support, she returned as firm as ever in her conviction that the war is justified. Al-Qaida, she said, “doesn’t show any signs of letting up.” The congressional delegation met with Gen. David Petraeus, the top commander in Iraq, in one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces.

What was the palace like?

“It’s absolutely huge,” she said. “I turned to my colleagues and said there’s a commonality with the Mall of America, in that it’s on that proportion. There’s marble everywhere. The other thing I remarked about was there is water everywhere. He had man-made lakes all around his personal palace — one for fishing, one for boating.”

In reality, Iraq is nothing like the Mall of America. Bachmann was able to talk only about the palace because she wasn’t allowed to leave the heavily-fortified Green Zone — an area most normal Iraqis aren’t even allowed to enter. According to a report from her trip, skyrocketing violence prevented Bachmann from “meeting any Iraqis, leaving the Green Zone or staying in Iraq overnight. She and other congressional members were required to wear full body armor, including Kevlar helmets, during the entire trip.”

Nevertheless, Bachmann still believes that Congress should support Bush’s escalation. “It hasn’t had a chance to be in place long enough to offer a critique of how it’s working,” she said. Maybe if she had actually been able to leave the Green Zone, she would have been able to speak to some actual Iraqis, 78 percent of whom believe the U.S. presence is making the security situation worse.

Digg It!

This is insane... first hand accounts don't tell the story at all.

Being escorted by our troops to local bazaars so you can buy a rug, and then you get flown out with apache gunships does not make for an accurate account of life in that country.

  3. BlueArkansas Says:

If memory serves, Bachmann's the same suck-ass who refused for nearly a minute to relinquish Shrub's shoulder as he attempted to flee his last SOTU. Why should anyone expect this idiot to present a fact-based assessment of anything?

By a strange coincidence, my son was just in the Mall of America. He said it was just like Baghdad! Everyone is wearing helmets and flak vests and armed to the teeth. And that was just because there was a sale on.

Wow! She sure did get a lot of insight during her overnight stay in the palace. Guess that must've been one heckuva powerpoint presentation.

So the workings of the Mall of America have finally been made public.

I mean, getting an Apache ride in from the parking lot was fun, and the bombs would make the roller coaster more exciting. But I found the cluster bombs in Camp Snoopy a bit much.

  16. Kyle Says:

Shop til you drop. Or the Mahdi army opens fire. Or Sunni insurgents come a-bombing. Or Al Qaeda in Iraq RPG's the food court. Funny, I've never had to deal with IED's when I go to the bookstore.

Our taxpayers dollars being spent on Bush bobbleheads. Minnesota ( like CT with Lieberman ) you should hang you collective heads in shame for putting this airhead back in Congress.

    1) She was not put "back" in Congress. It was her first trip and her last.
    2) Only one congressional district elected her. The rest didn't have any say in the matter. The bible-thumping dickheads seem to have clustered in that district. She will not be re-elected, dickheads notwithstanding.

  18. jmg Says:

Should read Bachmann (R-MN). Michigan (MI) has plenty of disappointing Representatives. Minnesota can keep her.

  19. debkakes Says:

Should change the headline, really. Dipshit that she is, she still should not be misquoted.

  20. swordsbane Says:

This is why I don't like Dems either. Sooner or later, they step on their own tongues.

She was talking about Husseins palace, not Bagdad or Iraq, and she was describing it's scope, not weather or not there are terrorists lurking around or how safe it is or if there's a Snoopy statue there.

Come on people. The Republicans are stupid for a sh*t-load of reasons. We don't have to invent ones. This is not helping.

  21. tom baker Says:

...of course both trips were the same to ms bachmann - she spent both of them blowing powerful old gop donors in the back of a beemer, which is also how she'll be spending congress's summer recess.

  24. Vet Says:

#20 is right that she was commenting on the palace - not the country.

That said --- Bachmann is an embarrassment to my state and my country. Hopefully the idiots in her district will give her the boot after her 2-year term in the house.

She IS the nut who grabbed Bush during the SOTUA and wouldn't let go. She's 100% certifiable. There are pictures of her hiding in the bushes at a gay pride event, spying on everyone. Cookoo!!!

  27. Merlin Says:

    What was the palace like?

    Bachmann opined:

“It’s absolutely huge,” she said. “I turned to my colleagues and said there’s a commonality with the Mall of America, in that it’s on that proportion. There’s marble everywhere. The other thing I remarked about was there is water everywhere. He had man-made lakes all around his personal palace — one for fishing, one for boating.”

This is tourist talk! Outside the Green Zone people are dying like flies in freezing weather. And all she can talk about is her impression of the palace.

We hired her to take care of this countries business, the people's business, not gawk at the Green Zone like a tourist in a tourist trap! Come 2008 she will be finding a new job.

And then, to add insult to injury, she spouts neocon talking points that she was taught before she went to Iraq. (backed up and verified, of course, by that stalwart general petraeus.) So of what value was her trip? Oh, yeah, she probably got a $1.oo rug by shopping in the Green Zone

  28. Thrasymachos Says:

    Great job, TP!

That's how you put some spin on a headline!!!

  29. GodSmoteTheSodomites Says:

Outside the Green Zone people are dying like flies in freezing weather. And all she can talk about is her impression of the palace.

How do you know? Have you been there? Or are you just referring to the reports by leftwing media?

  30. Spudge_Boy Says:

Sorry, I am going to have to call BS on this one TP. She was referring to the palace, which has been converted into an embassy.

She was not talking about Iraq.

There is no doubt in my mind that Saddam's Palace is ten times nicer than the mall of America.

As far as her discription of Iraq, she said that al Qaida wasn't giving up. That is 100% true. They won't ever give up, even if we bomb the planet.

  31. Borat Says:

    Dearest Trolls,
It’s not a miss-quote if TP prints the entire passage of what was said… which they did. The Headline is obviously a commentary on how only a self-involved, delusional sheep such as this nit-wit of a congresswoman could even SAY such a thing to begin with. Palace or no, you’re in a country that is war torn people REAL people dieing all around you. This woman turns to her fellow representatives and says THIS!? REALLY!? That was your profound awakening lady? The palace is like the mall of America…. Great glad it wasn’t a trip wasted.

  38. kabiddle Says:

As much as Ms. Bachmann seems to be into flights of her own fancy it is important to note that she is not from Michigan (MI) but from Minnesota (MN).

  39. evergreen Says:

TP missed the point...it isn't about malls.....The focus should be on what Bachmann said when she said:
" Al-Qaida doesn’t show any signs of letting up.”

If Al-Qaida is in Iraq at all now....it is all thanks to our invasion that deposed Hussein, who did not allow Al-Qaida in Iraq. But from what I read...the problem is now civil war between Sunni's and Shite...probably provoked and abetted by our presence as we give money & guns to both sides. sigh.

  53. Britisher Says:

Actually Amanda, your presentation of this story is very badly constructed. Ringo and Kevin are correct in noting your obvious misrepresentation and I urge you not to pull this kind of crap--it is unnecessary.

Amanda writes: What was the palace like?

Bachmann: "I turned to my colleagues and said there’s a commonality with the Mall of America"

Amanda writes: In reality, Iraq is nothing like the Mall of America

Your larger point, Amanda, that Bachmann, like the majority of Bush boosters who visit Iraq and thus profess some relevant experience of it when they never actually gets beyond the Green zone "bubble" ( or have to be escorted by a 100 troops, attack helicopter and dressed in full body armor engage in an elaborate photo-op), and thus their cheery observations are therefore more "true" and "realistic" is a point you could have made without this "sleight of hand" editing.

It doesn't negate your point, but it by misrepresenting the context, you undermine your point that she (and her ilk) should be taken to task when they misrepresent reality--and in doing so this does nothing for your own credibility. nor by association the credibility of Think Progress--a site which I happen to rate very highly.

No mention of how this safe Green Zone where a bank got robbed of $280 Million American dollars without anyone knowing what happen. I guess Rep Bachmann wasn't interested in that stolen American money just that the Saddam Palace was like a mall and she could go fishing. GodSmoteTheSodomites-
The primary crimes of the Sodomites were repeated economic crimes, both against each other and outsiders. One of the worst was to give money or even gold ingots to beggars, but to inscribe their names on them, and then subsequently refuse to sell them food. However, the unfortunate stranger would not be allowed out of the city, and would end up starving. After his death, the people who gave him the money would reclaim it.

This sounds rather like neo-con behavior.

A neo-conservative (abbreviated as neo-con or neocon) is part of a U.S. based political movement rooted in liberal Cold War anticommunism and a backlash to the social liberation movements of the 1960s and 1970s. These liberals drifted toward conservatism: thus they are new (neo) conservatives. They favor an aggressive unilateral U.S. foreign policy. I don't believe that America is the cause of all the problems in the world. I doubt anyone here would agree with that. I do think that we shouldnt act as policemen of the world. Democracy suffers when it comes from the end of a barrell. We, under the Republican guidance, have become less like in the world. Democracy is not suffering because of lefties, it's suffering because were seen as materialistic bullies. Sure we have a big stick to weild, but we should walk softly.

The problem is, I think, that the government is becoming corporatized and no longer functions for the good of the people. Politicians sell themselves to the highest bidders (lobbyists) and special interest groups and see office as a means to riches.

    Comment by Sovereign

They buy all the seats at the table. You and I are left to nip at their ankles. The more this becomes apparent to the masses that they have no voice, the more volatile America will become. Terrorism may not necessarily come from Islam. It more likely well come from the disenfranchised. When government sees this approaching, as Cheney may, the corporate political power will engage in legislation that strips away search and seizure laws and incarceration (habeas corpus) laws.

  197. Sovereign Says:

and while I am not intimidated I believe that it would be discouraging to young people to find that they should only be “aware” if they share the liberal view.

The liberal view does not come from the mouths of media pedantry. They are in the business of creating controversy for cold hard cash. Lets take Rush Limbaugh, a staunch commie hater, but also who became what he fears most. A drug Addict. Brittney Spears called herself a conservative yet followed the same path. She ended up in Rehab. Paris Hilton, another wealthy self-decribed conservative ended up on the same hypocritical path. Lindsey Lohan is following suit. Nicole Richie so on and on....

Capitalism is not bad, as Thrachymose says, but it is not conservative. The fact is Thrachymose, the neo-cons were followers of a nutty professor named Leo Strauss. I suggest thrachymose enlighten himself to his ideology before he goes off half-cocked again.

I'm conservative in most of my views. I have supported many Republican candidates. However, if anyone called me a neo-con, I would deck them. The neo-cons are a specific sub-group that has hijacked the Republican party and the government of our country.

They have embroiled us in unwinnable, and unsupportable, wars while destroying our standing with, virtually, the entire world.

I'm glad you are still a "proud American" but, alas, I no longer am. I am deeply ashamed of what our country has come to stand for and I take my share of the blame.

I have to say, I find this really pretentious. If Ms Conservative wishes to engage in an actual conversation, and isn't simply here to entertain herself by insulting liberals and leaving a long trail of thoroughly-discredited talking points, why should she have to kowtow to anyone who happens to be older than her? I'm probably older than you, Spudge, but I certainly wouldn't imagine that gave me some superior position over your opinions.

But, the biggest problem here is Bachmann wasn't taken aback by the excess. No, in fact she compared it to a mall. You know something most people like. And not just any mall, the mall of America, one of the most enjoyed malls in America.

    I agree on both points.

I also feel that more needs to be done to bring the Iraqi people together. We need to shatter their sectarian identities so that they can become Iraqis instead of Sunnis or Shias. This may take years of deprogramming, though.

I'm not quite sure what Zooey meant by "bait". Perhaps there is some slang definition I am not aware of.

Recruiters have had to lower their standards and resort to questionable practices to meet their quotas. They are trying their best to "lure" young people to join the Armed Services. Perhaps this is where the "bait" concept applies.

Or perhaps a recruit becomes more "bait" to throw into this piranha-infested ocean of war.

This is not a slight to the troops, as far as I can tell. It in no way denigrates their courage, valor, intelligence, patriotism, or any other positive trait I can think of.

Satire is not necessarily humor. It points out human folly through irony, derision, or wit.

Please explain to me why you find this conversation worth bringing up again and again.

What do you know about the Iraq/Iran Contra affair. Watergate?

I am not about to rattle off my knowledge of current (and past) affairs simply because you consider me too young to understand basic common sense.>>>Because you have none and didn't live through it. Iran/Contra is what changed my Mother's view and she was a devout Repug because she is fiscally conservative. She has voted a straight Dem ticket since then. (Disclosure: My Mom had some inside knowledge.)

–> As for one question: I DO NOT favor withdrawl from Iraq. This is SURRENDER, and having a Surrender set with a timeline to go along with it is just a happy little gift for all terrorists.>>Surrender???? Are you out of your mind? We invaded a country that DID NOT INVADE THE USA. Hell, even my 15 year old nephew knows that much.

—> Iran: Sitting down and talking to Ahmadinejad is not going to solve anything. While at this point i am not in favor of invading/confronting Iran militarily, I believe that the strength lies in the suppressed Iranian people, who live in a world of propaganda. >> Sweetie, you are living in the right-wing propaganda. What you don't understand is that the Middle East has a problem the USA deciding that we have the right to wage war against them because "WE" don't care for their policies/religion (not to mention their resoures).

And because the current Bush's ego is so friggin' big and he has serious "daddy" issues he has decided (being the Decider that he is) that it was necessary to kill Sadam because he tried to kill his daddy. At least, that's one of the excuses he has tried to pawn off on the American People.

RUSH: The president just concluded a bang-bang speech on the progress of the surge in Iraq. I've been watching it while working here on the closed-captioning, reading some of it, and just really kicking butt with this speech, very upbeat and positive.

    J. R. Dunn today in the American Thinker, the surge is working, it is succeeding, and everybody is aware of it, and so how is that going to be dealt with? It's going to be ignored, says Mr. Dunn at the AmericanThinker.com today. The results are being ignored now. "Virtually no media source or Democratic politician is willing to admit that the situation on the ground has changed dramatically over the past three months. Coalition efforts have undergone a remarkable reversal of fortune, a near-textbook example as to how an effective strategy can overcome what appear to be overwhelming drawbacks," not the least of which is a major political party in the United States. "The Coalition has left the treadmill in which one step of progress seemed to unavoidably lead to two steps back. It requires some time to discover the proper strategy in any war," but it appears that it has been reached here. I gave you all the details yesterday about the Sunnis and the Shi'a getting together, 25 different tribes, people getting fed up with Al-Qaeda, even low level Al-Qaeda members in Iraq becoming informants on the bad guys, upset with the barbaric nature of their behavior.

"Someday 2006," Mr. Dunn writes, "may be seen as Iraq's 1943. It appears that Gen. David Petreaus has discovered the correct strategy for Iraq: engaging the Jihadis all over the map as close to simultaneously as possible. Keeping them on the run constantly, giving them no place to stand, rest or refit. ... We will see more of this in the weeks ahead. The Jihadis have come up with no effective counterstrategy, and the old methods have begun to lose mana. The last massive truck-bomb attack occurred not in Baghdad, but in a small Diyala village that defied Al-Queda. An insurgency in the position of using its major weapons to punish noncombatants is not in a winning situation. You will look long and hard to find any of this in the legacy media." It isn't there. It cannot be reported that the surge is succeeding, so what will be focused on, ladies and gentlemen, is how the political situation is falling apart, they're not making progress and so forth.

So whatever the good news is, it's like the Drive-Bys and the Democrat Party find a way to avoid it. Their worst nightmare is for this news to start trickling out for the Democrat Party.

  359. Zooey Says:

    Damn it, CORRECTION.

There isn't one, but if there was — No.

  360. Frank J Says:

The surge has basically been chasing the terrorist and criminal gangs around the suburbs of Baghdad, or even into northern or western Iraq. This has taken its toll. Time spent in flight cannot be spent planting IEDs or killing people. Putting all these guys on the road, also makes them more susceptible to capture. A lot of important terrorists have been captured this way. The chief liaison between al Qaeda headquarters and al Qaeda in Iraq was nabbed, as well as many mid-level terrorist cell leaders.

What most of the troops, and Iraqi civilians, notice is the lower level of violence. Since the surge offensive began four months ago, Iraqi (military and civilian) deaths have declined by more than 50 percent, and American casualties are down by over a third. U.S. troops are still taking the lead in moving into hostile areas, and being exposed to ambush and IEDs. But U.S. tactics and training have made enemy efforts much less lethal. This has helped demoralize an increasing number of terrorists. Many are tired of killing Iraqi civilians, and the increasing difficulty at getting at American troops. Look at this from the Iraqi perspective. In a very good month, Iraqis make a hundred or more attacks a day on American troops, and kill, on average, about four of them. While the terrorists make a big deal out of every American killed, they know that most of their attacks were not only failures, but got a lot of their buddies killed. On average, 10-20 terrorists die for every American killed. This has been going on for years, and an increasing number of Iraqi fighters are demoralized and quitting. Many either become informers, or surrender and speak freely. This is resulting in fresher intelligence, and raids that are catching terrorist cells preparing for operations, and in possession of weapons, bombs and incriminating documents.

    Well, good.

  361. Spudge_Boy Says:

You can keep posting all the plagerized stuff you want. I doesn't mean the surge is working. You dumb fu*ks have been wrong from the start and you will continue being wrong until you pul your head out of your a$$.

  372. missmolly Says:

Ms. Bachman does certainly take the prize for dumb comments, but I won't take her to task for her comparison of the palace to Mall of America. MofA is probably her cultural landmark -- what she compares large-scale structures to.

What bothers me is her comment about Al Qaeda not showing any signs of letting up. How did she make that observation? Since she didn't leave the Green Zone, and she didn't actually talk to any Iraqis, she can only be making assumptions -- and those assumptions sound eerily like the talking points the GOP machine feeds to the dittoheads.

How does she know how much of the violence that kept her in the Green Zone protected by body armor is the doing of Al Qaeda? Was she able to peer beyond the fences and see the insignia on their uniforms? Did an Al Qaeda spokesman visit her at the palace and brief her? Or has she merely bought into the official GOP line that ALL violence in Iraq is Al Qaeda?

WHY do we spend taxpayer money to send brain-dead congresspersons to Iraq? Their "observations" are about as valuable to us as Bush's observation of the Katrina devastation from the window of Air Force One.

  373. nofltwlt Says:

    Can you say "ditzy"?

  375. Thor Says:

Frank J...I do not know where you are getting your talking points but it is best to never speak and let others wonder if you are stupid rather than to speak and confirm their assumptions. What you say is not true and the facts from the CIA, NSA and the Pentagon bears that out. You really need to try to get your information from others besides O'Reilly, Limbaugh and Hannity....and of course Fox "Our Opinion of The News" station. You fail to mention that 1. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11...2. Osama is still on the run...3. Al Qaeda was not in Iraq before the Bush-GOP Iraq War. If you want to pontificate on any so-called successes then you must also point out the failures.

  376. Thor Says:

Oh...One last tidbit of information for you trolls!....Good news! The hunt for WMD's is still continuing and any day now we expect to find that missing H-bomb we just know is out there! Boy with all that sand you just know its easy to hide an H-bomb! Tricky people those Iraqis!

  377. Navelgazer Says:

She is my Congresscritter and I deeply regret not making more of an effort to expose her as the lunatic she is.

  378. skmarshall Says:

Granted the woman may be a misguided lunatic, but why did you need to write a stupid out-of-context headline like the one on this story, which puts Think Progress on the same level as any wingnut/O'Reilly clone page.

    I'm with Ringo. Sheesh.

  379. citizen from Minnesota Says:

Michelle Bachmann is an air-headed idiot and I'm amazed someone so shallow was ever elected to office. She's an embarrassment. The things she does and says are preposterous. She's nothing but a republican groupie. Shame on the people who elected her.

  380. Progressivewomyn Says:

Her comment was in direct response to a question about Sadaam's palace. This article is trying to make a point but deceptive in attempting to suggest that she said Iraq, as a whole, is like the Mall of America. This article is deliberately taking her comments out of context. It would have been stronger without the context lifting. I am, however, empathetic with the outrage of her Bush support for the war. Why travel there at taxpayer expense if you can't ever leave the Green Zone?

  381. Neeko Says:

Bachman was also caught on film spying on a gay rights rally from behind some bushes (the arboreal type) at the MN state capital.

She also ingeniously stated that there would be no unemployment if the minimum wage law was repealed. Cause, ah my gawd, then people could work for one dollar an hour, totally regardless of the poverty line.

Once again, my fellow Minnesotans, how the hell did she get elected?

  382. Jim Says:

Now I don't like Bachmann much at all, but let's get this straight - she didn't say Iraq was like the Mall of America.

She said Saddam's Palace was similar in size to the Mall of America.

If she had said "Wow, Saddam's palace is the size of ten football fields!" then I wonder if you would have blogged "Hey this crazy Rep. thinks Iraq is nothing more than a friendly game of football!"

  383. Neeko Says:

Yea I read the article and gathered the correct context. TP should have presented it more accurately than they did. At least they don't spin and repeat false info about topics like Plame's covert status.

The simple bit of info that Bachmann was comparing a tyrant's palace to the MOA would have been enough for me.

Maybe she'll go to New Orleans next and compare the empty streets to the solitude of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

  384. WILLIE MCMANUS Says:

THIS IS NO SURPRISE. MICHELLE BACHMANN IS AN EXTREMIST IDIOT, AS WE WHOHAIL FROM STILLWATER, MN. KNOW ONLY TOO WELL. IT IS MY FIRM BELIEF THAT IF BUSH , CHENEY, AND GONZALES WERE WALKING DOWN THE STREET TOGETHER SHOOTING CHILDREN AND OLD LADIES WITH FLAME THROWERS, BACHMANN WOULD FIND A WAY TO GLEEFULLY JUSTIFY THEIR ACTIONS. SHE'S A WALKING DISASTER, AND I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW RELIEVED WE ARE TO HAVE HER AWAY FROM HERE.

  385. Jon Says:

The sad part about being a Democrat is having to deal with Liberals. She was asked about the Palace. Not Iraq, it's people, it's business, etc. Since she's likely BEEN to the Mall of America, this Palace is likely the closest thing she can think of that compares in size and scope.

Yes I realize Bachman is quite the puppet and I certainly didn't or ever will vote for her for anything, but when people claim what an idiot she is in context to her comparison only show your complete ignorance.

  386. Melanie Says:

god, every time i hear about her, i'm ashamed to be from minnesota.

  387. Flashman Says:

Amanda, this is really dishonest reporting. Even from your ideologically-skewed reporting of Bachmann's comments it's easy to see that she was giving a statement of quantity (scale), not quality (safety).

Even some of your supporters are rolling their eyes at this one.

  388. null Says:

The jews wantd us in Iraq and thats what they got. The KIKES are running this government!

  389. rachelle Says:

RE: comment 388 and 389: WOW! i had no idea Henry Ford had been reincarnated! racism and bigotry are alive and well here in the land that genocide made!
