Pelosi voiced concerns about wiretapping program.

TPM reports that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) raised objections to the NSA domestic surveillance program in 2004 after learning of the dissent that existed within the administration regarding its legality. A Pelosi spokesperson said, “She made clear her disagreement with the program continuing despite [former Deputy Attorney General Jame] Comey’s objection.” The disclosure is significant because it means that at least three members — Pelosi, Sen. John Rockefeller (D-WV), and Sen. Tom Daschle (D-SD) — of the eight-member bipartisan congressional leadership briefed about President Bush’s warrantless surveillance voiced their disapproval at the time.

UPDATE: The Crypt has more from Rockefeller.

And yet it still goes on! Mrs. Pelosi is in the most powerful position to do something about this. Why is impeachment “off the table?”

  2. TripMaster Monkey says:

So, Pelosi, you disagreed with the wiretapping of American citizens, and yet you still think impeachment is a bad idea?

What does Chimpy, Deadeye, TurdBlossom, Speedy, and the rest have to do before impeachment is “back on the table”? Roast human infants alive and devour them on the White House lawn???

    TMM,
You should not suggest such an action. Since infants are out of the womb, that group just might follow through.

Disagreeement? How about “outraged?” When Cindy Sheehan takes over for “run for cover” Pelosi in Congress, she won’t just settle for being “disagreed” with the violations of our civil rights and the Constitution. Sheehan will make “clear” that justice with be heavy handed and rightous.

  8. Namtillaku says:

What? Did she put her foot down? She must have caused quite a huff. Oh wait…

  9. ω Jugs ω says:

Please Gaia Earth Mother…please…please…Gaia hear me…oh PLEASE let it be so!

Let Cindy Sheehan take over Pelosi’s seat! Let the libs elect that flaming nutcase whackjob psycho who will use her position to screech and rant and let fly the spit all over the congress.

Please GEM, let Cindy get elected so America can see clearly what has become of the DFL.

Thank you Gaia, Ill burn a mandrake root in your honor tonight.

  12. Jay Randal says:

So what! > Pelosi did nothing to stop the wiretapping program, so my bet is that Karl Rove dug up dirt on Nancy in wiretaps on her phone, therefore reason she is terrified to impeach Bush and Cheney. She has been blackmailed.

Would that include the soldiers who volunteer to return and/or extend their enlistments?

Par for the course, fernando, you are who you are.

  14. Ψ says:

Thats it jay, formulate more conspiracies!

Thats gotta be it, some crazy scheme by Rove to blackmail Pelosi, after all, she is a democrat and therefore immune to the shenanigans that other lesser politicians use to stay in power and suck off the public boob for decades.

More likely there is some Israeli Jooo who put a mind-control chip into Nancy while she slept, now she is controlled by Netanyahu as he plots to conquer the entire middle east.

  15. TripMaster Monkey says:

And out comes the “libs hate the troops” canard. How depressingly predictable.

Tell me, ω Jugs ω, are those soldiers you mentioned responsible for forming our foreign policy?

  16. veritas says:

Let me get this straight: 4 members of the 8 members of this bipartisan believed the cockamamie line of bullshit served by Comey and just let it slide? Sure, they made comment but didn’t do the right thing which would have been to expose what was occurring and bring it to the attention of the american people. This sounds like the beginning of a huge black eye for Nancy, unfortunately. Maybe this is why she’s been so reluctant to put impeachment back on the table because she, essentially, opined on it and moved on. This nebulous area of being incriminated by association (or knowledge of, as the case may be) is what may be keeping Pelosi for bringing impeachment to the table – which, BTW, IS a mandate and not a choice at this time since impeachable offenses have now been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt.

  17. Trekkie says:

    Okay, explaining it again.

Speaker Pelosi cannot be the one to lead the charge for impeachment because she is in the line of succession. As third-in-line to the presidency, if she were to strongly support impeachment every conservative from Orange County to Greenwich would be screaming “Power Grab! Coup d’état!”

Sheehan for Congress is a godawful idea. First of all, Pelosi is well-liked in her district and any “interlopers” would get savaged in the primary. Second, “single-issue” candidates (yes, even anti-war single-issue candidates) have very poor success at capturing seats and even the ones who do take years to be influential.

Conyers is the right guy to push this, but he’s wrong on the numbers. He needs 219 because Pelosi’s vote would get the same catcalls as if she pushed it herself.

  18. veritas says:

#12 That’s been my guess on the impeachment impasse for a long time – illegal wiretapping of the Democrats so they have the goods on them – yep, it’s called blackmail.

  19. Jay Randal says:

Post 14 LOL > I see you use the satanic prong for your name. Suits you well being a lockstep Bush Regime lover. Politicians of both parties are routinely blackmailed in DC, so call it conspiracies if you want, but it happens all the time. I am no supporter of Pelosi, because I have always believed she is dingy.

  20. veritas says:

Trekkie: Obviously, if Pelosi is third in line it might give the appearance of a conflict of interest but it’s not illegal by any stretch of the imagination. As speaker of the House, they are generally the one to call for impeachment so it would always be a potential problem if it is viewed that way. I doubt that it violates ethical standards either. It may be distasteful since she would be the heir apparent but not customary and certainly not illegal.

  22. veritas says:

Conyers lost his groove when the Bushevites tried to blackmail him for asking someone in his office to run an errand or something ridiculously inane and stupid. Who knows what other threats he has received from these a$$wipes.

  23. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Trekkie sez:

Speaker Pelosi cannot be the one to lead the charge for impeachment because she is in the line of succession.

She doesn’t have to “lead the charge”. All she has to do is get out of the way.

  24. Martha Stewart says:

If the president were to be impeached and the VP became president, would the Speaker automatically become VP, or could the new president appoint his/her own VP?

    Just curious.

  25. Jay Randal says:

I used to like Rep. Conyers, but when he had Cindy Sheehan and Ray McGovern arrested at his office he lost my support. He has no intention of doing anything to get rid of Bush, and Cheney, because he has most likely been blackmailed too or Bush thugs threatened his family.

  26. TripMaster Monkey says:

    veritas sez:

#12 That’s been my guess on the impeachment impasse for a long time – illegal wiretapping of the Democrats so they have the goods on them – yep, it’s called blackmail.

I wouldn’t be so charitable…after all, Pelosi is a noted supporter of AIPAC.

They didn’t need to coerce Pelosi…she’s been on board for a while now.

  27. veritas says:

So Pelosi’s a windbag, too? TripMaster, tell me it isn’t so? I hate what Conyers did to Sheehan yesterday. He’s turned into a human slug these days. He’s totally lost his groove and half of his mind it seems.

  28. Jay Randal says:

Nancy Pelosi has lots of hidden dirt that can be given to the press by Bush operatives. Her husband is involved in shady business deals, she purchased a multi-million dollar winery with seedy funds, and she employs illegal Mexican workers to pick her grapes.

  29. Rick Duncan says:

One thing I have never understood: Why is it ok to make fun of the mother of a dead veteran, but not the late soldier or Marine? They make fun of and deride Cindy Sheehan, but not her son? Why?

As a veteran Marine with 11 years of honorable service and three tours in Iraq under my belt, I am personally offended when certain individuals make fun of and deride Cindy Sheehan, not because I agree with what she does all the time, but because she is the Mother of one of my fallen comarades.

  30. veritas says:

So, the triumverate of power we have right now is Reid, Pelosi, and Conyers and they’re all pretty much “on board” and sycophantic windbags?

And, instead of a gaggle of like-dressed women stomping around her, we’ll insert mexican men?? You are kidding me, I hope with what you’ve said. I’ve heard that her hubby is a weight around her neck and into shady real estate deals.

    ************
Impeachment is not removal from office. It is a fomal listing of charges against someone. The House of Representatives draws up the Articles of Impeachment. The trial occurs in the Senate.

Both Bush and Cheney should be Impeached. Because of the numbers in the Senate, it is unlikely either would be convicted or removed from office. However, just Impeachment hearings would be enough to show how this Administration has systematically trashed the Constitution violating not only their oaths of office, but the law, and common decency as well.

  34. Jay Randal says:

  39. Trekkie says:

I wish that I was kidding about Pelosi, but she purchased a winery worth millions and uses illegals to care for the grapes and pick them.

God, you are so full of s***.

First of all, every single one of her workers is legal, “evidence” dug up by agenda-driven people notwithstanding. Second, she pays them better and gives them more benefits than they would get if they were unionized. Third, she can’t ask them to unionize, even if they wanted to, because it’s a violation of labor laws and California state law.

As to the stuff that veritas said – Pelosi at the front of the impeachment charge is not illegal, but it’s a razor-thin line that shouldn’t be messed with simply because the blowback would be crippling.

  40. Trekkie says:

Every politician in Nevada takes bribes.

I would love to see you try to say that to my face, punk. Love to see how many teeth I can knock down your throat.

I’ve lived here over 20 years. I know almost every Democrat at every level of government. And you’re ridiculous assertion has not a wisp of fact.

Again, bring proof or cram it where the sun don’t shine.

  45. Jay Randal says:

LOL Trekkie you are dumber than the Bush lovers on here. Every politician in Nevada takes bribes, so face the music and chill out. I do not like violence, but I would knock your block off.

I would have a response, but this site does not allow hand gestures.

And considering I worked my a** off to get decent, HONEST people elected (and failed because the idiots in my state couldn’t stand that our gubernatorial candidate was a woman and was born in Georgia despite living here for nearly 30 years), I know she’s not a sell-out. Which disproves YOUR assertion. Thus you are wrong.

Now go away, before I am forced to taunt you a second time!

  49. Jay Randal says:

LOL Trekkie > sorry to burst your bubble, but most politicians are con-artists, so even the ones you help can screw you. Not a troll. Lurker, yes. Troll, no. Look higher in the thread. I’m just sick of hearing right-wing talking points (the Pelosi stuff is nearly a year old, the Harry Reid stuff even older than that). Especially when they are repeated over and over as if they are true.

Second, don’t live in Vegas. Don’t have the money to gamble (thank you for this wonderful economy, President Bush!).

  53. BARTLEBEE says:

Jay’s 100 percent right about Granny Pelosi. While she might make some killer Oatmeal Cookies and be nicer than mean old Bush, she doesn’t belong in Congress, much less in the chair of the House Speaker.

She IS a sellout, and part of the problem. Another big part of the problem, is the Senate Majority Leader, the not so distinguished genitalman from Nevada, Harry Reid.

Together they present the two biggest obstacles to ending the war and restoring democracy in this country, that we face.

  54. BARTLEBEE says:

And like Jay, I am sick of people jumping down our throats when we dare to question leaders in our own party.

It DOES remind me of the right wing neocons party loyalty demands.

We need to understand that not everyone in here, who is against Bush and the neocons, is for the Democrats. We may have given some of them our votes to beat Bush, but the way the 08 field is looking, I’d be betting on a 3rd party runoff to be coming down the pike.

  55. Trekkie says:

Together they present the two biggest obstacles to ending the war and restoring democracy in this country, that we face.

Cast blame all you want, but with only 49-54 votes in the Senate (when we need 60 to get things done thanks to the Republicans) we’re not going to get anything done, let alone something that would be veto-proof.

Reid pulled the defense authorization bill and got slammed for it, even though not passing that would be a “defunding”.

We simply don’t have the votes, and no amount of arm-twisting on our side is going to get Republican converts when Karl Rove is sending his people down with spiked clubs to keep the Republicans in line.

  56. Trekkie says:

And like Jay, I am sick of people jumping down our throats when we dare to question leaders in our own party.

Legitimate criticism is fine, but calling them crooks and liars for the hell of it is not. That’s my problem.

But since I’m trying to be pragmatic and sick of people jumping down my throat, I quit. Rant and rave all you want. It’s not like I went to school and studied this stuff or anything…

  57. BARTLEBEE says:

If we simply had a House Majority Leader (we were supposed to get Murtha, but we got Hoyer), a Senate Majority Leader, and Speaker of the House with any real level of commitment to ending the war, and restoring our constitutional protections, then the war would already have been defunded 3 years ago, when we knew where it was going, and 2,000 young men and women would still be alive, and another 20,000 would still have their arms and legs.

But instead we got Hoyer, Pelosi and Reid.

    And the war rages on.

    Bullshit.

You don’t need 60 votes to defund the war. The president can Veto any spending or appropriations bill he wants, but until he SIGNS one, he won’t get a cent.

    Period.

Yes, I am sure its frustrating to be busted as a complete moron, talking out of his ass about political processes he knows nothing about.

Because the fact is you’re full of horseshit, just like Pelosi and Reid.

All they have to do, is only permit bills on the table that fund redeployment, and nothing more.

The repuggies can filibuster until the cows come home.

Bush can veto them until his hand cramps up.

But nothing will get them the money, if Reid and Pelosi won’t give it to them.

    Nothing.

Thats the truth. The truth limpdicks like you don’t want the people to know. So yes, I imagine talking to me and people like me does make your bloodpressure climb. Because we call you on your lies.

I bet you go through lots of monitors.

    Its Hoyer, Pelosi and Reid.

THEY’RE the problem. They’re the obstacle. They’re running interference for the Bush administration, and until we get around them, or squeeze them hard enough to do their jobs, nothing going to get done.

  74. BARTLEBEE says:

Sorry to beat a dead donkey, but THINK you halfwit.

Listen to your professors and put down the bong.

In order to get money for the war, congress has to authorize a spending bill and the president has to approve it. If he veto’s it, he has not legal remedy to force congress to resubmit another bill. Congress can keep submitting the same bill, and he can keep vetoing it. But until he SIGNS it, he won’t get a nickel.

Did that penetrate your thick skull?

    If so, check this out.

If the Republicans filibuster the bill, then no spending bill gets to the presidents desk, for him to veto or sign, hence, he still gets no money.

When he asks where the hell his blood money is, Harry Reid can simply tell him to talk to his boys, the republicans. Because they’ll be the ones holding it up.

And EITHER way, the president still doesn’t get a nickel.

    Not one nickel.

  75. BARTLEBEE says:

We might not have the votes for impeachment, yet, but the power to end the war in Iraq is in the hands of the democrats, thanks to the framers of the Constitution. Congress has the power of the purse, and the problem right now is Reid, Pelosi and Hoyer, just won’t use it.

The coward who would not stand up for the constitution unless she knew absolutely beforehand she would win. Standing up against this dictator was just too inconvenient. Who cares about the constitution? We are just too busy to care.

  80. Bruce Gorton says:

    Trekkie:

I think you are an honest supporter of your chosen leaders, and I agree with you that allegations of corruption should be backed up.

That said: The power to end the war is in the hands of the Democrats right now, as is the power to impeach Bush.

The war could simply stall on funding. The Democrats keep resubmitting the same bill, and the Republicans keep not letting it through: Eventually the Democrats win by attrition. Not pretty, not glamourous, but the troops do get taken out of Iraq.

Impeachment, well once procedings start, the more moderate Republicans will come over the fence on it for the sake of saving their own political skins.

The Democrats may well have serious concerns about what the Republicans will say. Those Democrats should be voted out, politics isn’t a tea party and if they are that spineless they should maybe find a less confrontation oriented job.

    Comment by Bruce Gorton

The Democratic Leadership is the same leadership that has rolled over like lapdogs for the last 6 years. Not one filibuster was supported, the few that did stand up and speak out were abandoned by the leadership. Taking impeachment off the table and keeping it off only signalled to Bush, “Carry on. Carry on. I am not gonna do sh*t to stop you.”

The Democratic Leadership has hobbled any power they have and they have done it to themselves. They cannot blame anyone else now.

So Pelosi raised objections to the Constitution, the rights and privacy of WE The People being violated. Maybe she will send a letter.

The Truth is she and Reid are not going to do sh*t about it because they are all owned by the same people, the small percentage of the richest, the Oligarchy that is the true ruler of this country while we suffer under the illusion of a Democracy.
We have the best government money can buy and supprise folks, it is not bought for you and me, liberal, conservative, Republican or Democrat. It is owned by the small percentage of the Richest.

The only way to stop this slide to Oligarchy rule is to stop the big money from buying our representatives and stop corporate funding of elections as well as the current buy-a-polititian lobby system.

Facts are The Rich, The Corporations fund both sides almost equally. The support for their agendas are bought and paid for.

The only other way to send a signal is for each and every one of the incumbents that were in office, Republican and Democrat, when this sorrid mess started 6.5 years ago to be thrown out on their collective asses the next election. That includes Pelosi and Reid.

    Exactly.

  83. Stone says:

The dems are the same spineless noodle-fish they have always been, if you are a supporter of these fools then you are to blame too. Liberalism is a disease, a malady that seems to turn ordinary people into conspiracy spitting, hysterical freaks who want to blame everything on some secret underground network of republican operatives.

You spend your time barking that Bush did this and Rove did that, denigrating the presidential office at every turn while failing to turn your critical eye on the savages who are coming after us. You have no problem believing that Cheney operates a secret system of gulags, while simaltaneously you show great skepticism that islamic animals are capable of murdering Americans, even though they have been doing it for decades.

You claim that lost elections are the result of vote tampering and outright republican intimidation and cheating, but when the elections turn in your favor why its the American people speaking out for positive change.

Since regaining the houses the dems have passed a minimum wage bill and renamed a few post offices, meanwhile the poll numbers slide toward single digits and the democrat old guard spends their time whining that their previous votes for war were accidental and should be forgotten.

Your presidential nominee will be a carpet-bagger from New York whose only qualification is that she has the same last name as a past dem president, beyond that her accomplishments fade and if it werent for her last name she would be a third-tier candidate.

So piss and moan about the feckless nature of Reid and Pelosi, strut your hyperbolic “take back the streets” screeds and then just accept that your democrat party is starting to fall on hard times as the moonbats quickly consolidate themselves as the real players behind the scenes. Todays DFL would have no room for a sensible and rational man like Moynihan; the party is slipping over the edge and has left JFK far behind.

    Cheers! :-)

Don’t kid yourself, neither party has your best interest at heart.
Can the liberal name calling and wake your own ass up, open your eyes. Part of the game is to divide We The People with their crap.

Long as we are divided as a people, the Constitution and our rights continues to get trampled on.

Since when did unquestioning loyalty to corporate interests become what passes as Patriotic while both Parties destroy the Constitution this Country was founded on?

    Stone

As opposed to the Republicans who, after 6 years dominance in all aspects of government (Congress, Senate, WH, and the Supreme Court) achieved:

3000 dead in a terrorist attack.

1 major world renowned city destroyed in a natural disaster.

    Doubling America’s debt.

    2 seperate wars.

    Legalised torture.

K Street (The only 1 party specific corruption scandal I can think of in American history.)

All four of the four worst deficits in American history.

The third worst inflation adjusted deficit in American history.

The president who has taken the most leave in American history.

The Congress which has worked the least days in American history.

The worst economic recovery in American history.

    And… no Bin Laden.

Though I don’t support the Dems, because they are wussies, I would take their record of higher wages and a few renamed post offices over the R’s record any day.

  86. Menehune says:

Wait a sec… she knew the administration went ahead with something that concerned her as to its legality—and THEN she took impeachment off the table? Ms. Pelosi, you’re know aiding and abetting.

  87. Administrator says:

I hope many of you remember Representative Barbara Jordan D-Texas. On this day July 25, 1974, she spoke before the House Judiciary Committee about impeachment. If you want to hear a real public servant’s defense of the Constitution, follow the link below:

  88. missmolly says:

C’mon, Nancy — you can do better than this. You “learned” that warrantless wiretapping might be illegal? This program should have alarmed you and all freedom-loving Americans right from the start!

At least you get points for condemning the program. There are far too many who still support such a program, which serves only to trample on privacy rights of citizens and does little or nothing to stop terrorists (what terrorists in their right mind would use a land line — or anything other than a throwaway cell phone — to discuss their plans?).

  89. Troll says:

Pelosi is as criminal as Bush. She should be removed from office.

  90. tarazan says:

    Pelosi ‘voiced concerns….’!!,

What is that supposed to mean?!…
People can say this, but as a Speaker…and legistlator,
you need to ACT ,Nancy;not just ’show concern’.

  91. bilbobaggins says:

I’m waiting to hear from the “gang of eight” that Gonzales says asked him to go to Ashcroft’s hospital room to get him to sign off on the spying program. I suspect that this claim is another one of Gonzales “misspeaks”.

  92. bilbobaggins says:

“What is that supposed to mean?!…
People can say this, but as a Speaker…and legistlator,

There really was nothing that Pelosi could do. She was bound by law to keep quiet. I suppose she could have gone public, but that would have been the end of her public career and probably would have accomplished nothing. Considering the lack of outrage that the American Public showed when Bush’s spying plan was leaked, I doubt that Pelosi exposing it to the public would have made any difference.

  93. Hrr says:

#17 Speaker Pelosi cannot be the one to lead the charge for impeachment because she is in the line of succession. As third-in-line to the presidency, if she were to strongly support impeachment every conservative from Orange County to Greenwich would be screaming “Power Grab! Coup d’état!”

Actually, you are quite wrong here. Impeachment is an indictment against the Executive branch saying that through the branch’s actions, there has been harm against the Constitution.

It DOES NOT mean that there will be a removal of anyone from office. THAT would occur after a conviction of impeachment.

So, no, there is no conflict of interest here..in fact, she would just be doing her JOB.

  94. J Lewd says:

This headline is incomplete; it should read: “Pelosi voiced concerns about wiretapping program, but did jack shit.” Man, I am sick of being nominally represented by this tweedledum proponent of the status quo. The only legislation she’ll get behind is that which benefits her financial holdings (which we’ve already seen enough of).

And while we’re on the topic, enough with the fucking “deer-in-the-headlights” expressions every time someone takes your fricking photograph. Pelosi’s a poster child for the horrors of plastic surgery.
