Army orders surge in recruiters.

The Army Times reports that “the Army has ordered 1,106 soldiers, former recruiters, away from their current assignments and back to recruiting duty starting on Friday.” The Army issued the order because it is “having significant difficulties getting new recruits because of the unpopularity of the Iraq War.”

    “unpopularity of the Iraq War”

This seems like a strange statement to me.. Is a war EVER popular??

  2. Helen Rainier says:

Poor Army. Adding more recruiters will not change the FUNDAMENTAL problem — which is — people will NOT join the Army because they believe this war is illegal, they want us OUT, and because Dubya is a lying, snivelling coward who doesn’t give a g–damned thing about the integrity and honor of the United States of America.

    Buck Fush!

  5. bilbobaggins says:

Ya think? They have been having significant recruiting problems for over a year now. That is why Bush had to extend the current tours from 12 months to 15 months, and I expect he will soon extend the 15 months to 24 months. Bush has no more people he can stop-loss into his war and he can’t get any new recruits, so what is he going to do now? Seems to me that his only choice at this point to reinstate the draft.

Start the draft, the only moral way to handle this.

It’s not moral our troops are on their 3rd and 4th tours while pussies like Mr P hides in his moms basement and is a war cheerleader.

Now THAT would bring a screeching halt to this war as all those Young Repugs on Campus told Dad and Mom to get this shit over with and let them get back to their Frat parties and their College Girls Gone Wild vids!!

  11. G Whiz says:

    Much ado about nothing.

Simply approach all the republicans in Congress and ask them to offer up their sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, etc., for–er–sacrifice.

  12. Mark @ News Corpse says:

    Yeah, this is great idea.

People are so disgusted with this war and this President that they are fleeing military service in droves.

So let’s hire more recruiters to harass the people who we already know don’t want to serve.

What makes them think the new recruiters will have any better luck than the old ones?

    (Hard work)

  21. Juan C says:

I guess Mr. P, Ringo and some of the other trolls can help the recruiting numbers.

  22. SGT Higgins says:

The short-notice assignments are temporary — they begin Friday and will run no later than Oct. 15.

Because the Fiscal Year runs through the end of Sept.
2 weeks to transition back to their current units. This sounds like a year-end surge to try to avoid bad publicity due to year end recruitment goal backlash.

  25. Erica says:

the unpopularity of the war is obvious – our soldiers are dying and a solution has not been nearly reached for the past 5 years. Since then, over 340 billion dollars and countless lives have been financed for this war [Borgen Project]. The unpopularity of the war should have been from the very beginning. War should never happen honestly, but if it must, it should be to defend our values and not to infringe ours upon others.

  26. Vice President Bush says:

Yeah I thought I heard Lindsey Graham say that too.

Re-enlistment and recruitment are not the same thing.

  29. SGT Higgins says:

Wouldn’t it just be easier to either pay a bigger signing and retention bonus —- Paying more in bonuses? That’s a bribe. I’m all for it!

or to fudge the numbers? —- easier? maybe. But it lacks integrity.

You beat me to it WaltTheMan.

Bush has ripped the cloak off of the Repugnicunts and wakened a lot of sleeping Americans to the reality of the right wing freaks. For that silver lining we should be grateful, too bad we had to sacrifice so many men and women (ours and Iraqis) along the way.

  43. tom baker says:

hide your high schoolers – military recruiters lie more, and more effectively, than used car salesmen

  44. SGT Higgins says:

    Sgt Higgins -

In your mind, how long will it take to rebuild the Army after this Clusterf(ck is over? —– My opinion? 3-5 years, tops. Americans tend to have very short memories. We re-deploy, Lindsey Lohan or Paris hilton or both end up in jail, and this’ll all be a bad, yet quickly fading memory.

I mean not only in equipment —- 1 to 2 years
but in the ranks as well? — a little longer. If nothing else, to boost troop strength, once we’re out of Iraq, some of that money WILL go into recruitment and retention bonuses. Money talks.

And how long do you think the damage will take to be repaired? —- I just spoke of rebuilding, what damage are you referring to? Not denying there is damage, just asking that you be a little more specific.

I was in Vietnam, and it took quite a while for all that to shake out. —- I’m not convinced it ever did shake out. But it does tend to be relegated to the back of the mind the longer ago it happened. The next generation won’t know what we’re talking about when we mention this war to them. It’ll be something they read about, not experience.

You hit on an important conflict Juan. Granada was the first, modern, war staged for political reasons. Reagan needed to puff his chest out about something after he cut and ran out of Lebonen when the Marine barracks was blown up (with a car bomb, jeez don’t republicans ever learn?). IT worked, the mindless flag-wavers cheered, Reagan got his macho strut and then bush 1 double-crossed his buddy Noriega in Panama, and had his little war, then upped the ante and suckered punched his buddy Saddam. So bush 2 comes in and manages to lose 2 wars. the boy won’t be able to find his ass when he’s perpwalked with is hand cuffed behind his ass.

  48. missmolly says:

I don’t really think the drop in recruiting comes from a lack of recruiters. It might just have something to do with the idea of being sent to fight (and possibly get killed) in a never-ending quagmire, being subject to a back-door draft when it’s time to go home and there are no replacements, not getting sufficient stateside duty in between foreign deployments, getting issued weapons that jam, not getting issued body armor, and having to drive insufficiently fortified vehicles over landmines.

Yeah — let’s just see how this “surge” of recruiters works out. Swampland doesn’t always sell better just because more people are selling it.

Why haven’t these strong supporters joined the military. Sounds alot like Bush/Cheney policy of send others I can’t go. Bush had Daddy get him out of serving, Cheney used the 5 deferment. Other candidates who were in the draft like Mitt had their Daddy get them out. So are we now a country that gives lip service for serving in the military with just a don’t ask a Republican to go. Hundreds of brave young soldiers die every month in the Iraq civil war. Does anyone really care about the lives of our troops or is the battle cry now send anyone but me because I’m a Republican.

It all depends on what you consider an “accomplishment”. The Repubs (and the trolls here) point to his granting tax cuts to the rich, getting prescription drug coverage for Medicare recipients, his battling the “war on terra”, and appointing Alito and Roberts to the Supreme Court.

Personally, I believe that the tax cuts have only served to drive our country into deeper debt, appointing Alito and Roberts to the SCOTUS will set back many of the hard-won civil rights victories of the past few decades, and the WOT is nothing but a PR stunt.

And as far as the drug coverage goes — I’m glad the elderly are getting something, which was way too long in coming. But the way it was done still has some of our senior citizens’ heads spinning.

Nope — I guess I can’t really come up with anything positive, either.

So, I asked him if he did. He said he had no problem at all finding people who wanted to sign up, There were plenty of them. He said his problem was that they were too stupid to pass the tests. He pointed to his head and said there are plenty of ignorant people who wanted to join but since they couldn’t pass the tests he wasted a lot of time.

  80. SquarePeg says:

    Jihad,

What are you trying to tell us? Spit it out (oops, my bad) your vocaulary overwhelms me!

Would you even know what to do with one?

Get a grip, take that plank out of your ass. Your head is going to explode.

  81. lespool says:

Well, I hope our military recruiters are aware that their best source of potential soldiers are the Young Republicans, found in campuses across the nation fervently pounding their chests and sounding their battle cries. Of course, what with so many fundamentalist Republicans enlisted, the military may want to rethink their policy towards gays and be more inclusive. — As one never knows when those Christian conservatives will come running out of the closet.

  82. Martin Gifford says:

The army is “having significant difficulties getting new recruits because of the unpopularity of the Iraq War.”

But 30% of the voters should be volunteering, shouldn’t they? There should be plenty of able-bodied Bush supporters queued up outside the enlistment offices ready to sacrifice themselves for… whatever it is they believe this war is for.

  83. Helen Rainier says:

Once again this is thinking and problem resolution is way off base on the part of the Recruiting Command. The problem does NOT lie in not enough recruiters to do the job. The problem lies in what the Bush Administration has wrought upon this country and the nefarious means they have used to achieve that end. People realize they have been lied to. People realize they have deceived. People realize too many of our sons and daughters by an administration, abetted by their stooges in Congress, that doesn’t give a damn about justice, law and order and doing the morally correct thing.

Until we have a government that functions for the people, by the people, and of the people, the people will continue to resist by any means of civil disobedience they can. This refusal to allow their sons and daughters to be sacrificed on the Altar of Mammon erected by Bush is just one form of civil disobedience that We, the People can undertake when we have a Congress refuses to put the good of the country first.

Party loyalty over loyalty to our country is always a losing proposition — particularly when it is predicated upon lies, deceit and arrogance.

  84. Marie says:

That’s right, call them all back. Tell them how to spin more lies to highschool kids, make false promises to other young adults and get their signatures.
    The war is illegal.
The war has been run horribly.
The soldiers in the field are denied adequate equipment.
    The veterans are denied benefits.
Tours of duty are endlessly extended.

In the words of Dick Cheney — Bush, “go f**k yourself.
