Today, the House passed a bill stating “it is the policy of the United States not to establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing a permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq.” Speaker Pelosi explained that “today’s vote can again make clear to the President, to the Administration, to the American people, to the people in the Middle East, to the people in Iraq — that the American people are opposed to a permanent military presence in Iraq.” Watch Pelosi’s floor speech:

You can make it as clear to Chimpy as you like, Madam Speaker. I only hope that it is clear to you that, assuming this bill can clear the Senate (which is doubtful), Chimpy will either veto it, obviate it with a signing statement, or just sidestep it by claiming that the bases in Iraq are only temporary…extremely long-term, but temporary, just the same.
You have the power to stop this right now, Pelosi. There’s a pithy saying that “when all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail”. In your case, the opposite is true. There is a nail that needs driving, and you have a hammer handy, but you insist on declaring that the hammer is “off the table”, while wasting time trying to drive the nail with anything from a screwdriver to a tape measure.
For God’s sake, Nancy, pick up the fscking hammer already…or at least stop standing on it long enough for someone else to pick it up.

The feed ends with Bachman beginning to make connection between Bush 41, 43 and 911 – and then ends just where the juicy details begin to connect all by themselves.
He sets the groundwork, of course, for the collusion with the BCCI, Carlyle Group, Mahfouz family, Bin Laden family, and the Reichstag Bush Family. Knew that Prescott was a card-carrying nazi but never knew that his wife’s father was also one for whom he is, appropriately, named “herbert walker”. Pelosi said “He mischaracterized the facts in Iraq”. Dems must do better than this and they must start NOW.
How about – He is “lying about the facts in Iraq”, “deceptively hiding the truth”, or “Bush is dishonest”, “Bush’s fabricated reasons to invade Iraq are only surpassed by his demented reasons to stay.”
I don’t want to hear “mischaracterized” used ever again – call it what it is.

July 25th, 2007 at 2:58 pmNow, they need to follow that up by passing a law that says that no oil company doing business in the USA may profit from invading Iraq. In other words, we will no longer ask the Iraqi Parliament to pass the “reconciliation bill” that would give US and British oil companies 70% of Iraq’s oil profits for 30 years. We can’t speak for the British, but we can remove our country from the equation. I am willing to bet that if we were to do that, the Iraqis would stop shooting at us. I know that I would be shooting at a country that had invaded and was now occupying the USA and was trying to steal the one natural resource our country depended on for survival.

July 25th, 2007 at 3:03 pmWhat is the definition of “permanent”? You fools do realize that our bases in Japan have always been considered temporary and someday will be given to the Japanese?
Here is how it works, how it worked in such places as Subic Bay: the Iraqis own the land, we own the buildings and stay there for as long as the Iraqis allow us. One day we give the buildings to the Iraqis as a gift and leave. ALL of our bases there would be considered temporary.
This is more pap from a bunch of dems trying to placate the hyperzealots who constitute their new base, it means nothing and the dem pols know it, now you do too.

Not good enough. It should read:
“It also states that it is the policy of the United States or any Oil company doing business to exercise control of the oil resources of Iraq”.
They said “policy of the United States” and conveniently left out the oil companies.
July 25th, 2007 at 3:06 pmThis bill is posturing for the future. No bases could be started in the time Bush has left in office and there’s no reason for any Senators to oppose this knowing full well the whole discussion of Iraq will be up again in Sept.

July 25th, 2007 at 3:22 pmI actually disagree with this one. This is one issue where my party is to the left of me. I am active-duty military and I really wanted to sign the Petition for Redress. It was this “no permanent bases” and “leaving no soldiers in Iraq” language that steered me away from it.
As much as I am against how the war in Iraq began and the way it is being conducted, I have no problem with most of the ideas to transform our force projection from “Old Europe” to new bases. I have no problem with the strategic advantage a base in Iraq gives our military. I don’t mind Iraq being a location where I could be stationed some day. The same goes for Poland, Georgia, the Czech Republic or wherever this DoD transformation might send me. I was actually quite looking forward to Uzbekistan, but I guess that didn’t pan out.
But anyways… End the war. Bring the largest portion of our troops home as you possibly can. Stop the death of both our guys and innocent Iraqi civilians. But I think this one topic really does lend some credence to the Cons when they say we are trying to “micromanage”.

July 25th, 2007 at 5:01 pmIf they weren’t such cowards they would already be there. I’m looking at you Mr. in your Momma’s basement with ‘more important’ things to do with your life. You cannot even talk the talk; how you gonna walk the walk?
Pathetic.

Yes, you are ………..
July 25th, 2007 at 5:21 pmI disagree that we cant resolve unrest in the Middle East as long as we have bases there. Quite the opposite – under the right leadership, military bases can be a beacon and an example of real American values. Real ones – not these. Local populace can work there. They can see what Americans are really like as people. We can provide a host of outreach programs. Could someone eventually marry an American soldier? I dunno… Could be a while.
funky p – Did you read my post? What party did you think I was talking about? Also.. I was already posting in the thread about the AEI.
July 25th, 2007 at 5:24 pmI wonder how many Iraqi’s are in favor of permanent US Bases in their country.
July 25th, 2007 at 5:40 pmThis vote is probably meaningless in a practical sense….The Bush presidency is not Permanent, thankfully…and nothing else is either.
It does have Symbolic value…especially being as lopsided as it is.
Funny how it’s taken 5 YEARS to come out and actually say it. Lots of concrete has been poured in these 5 years.
And Balad airbase in Iraq is the second busiest Airport in the World…right behind Heathrow.
I wonder how many Iraqi’s are in favor of permanent US Bases in their country.
That polls been tabulated already….the answer is 8.
July 25th, 2007 at 5:45 pmNeither do I. I figured it was some kind of mix-up.
July 25th, 2007 at 5:50 pmCool. Now let’s hear what Hillary Albright has to say about it.
July 25th, 2007 at 6:02 pmThe percentage of post by NeoCon trolls in here has gotten really high. What’s happened?
Any guess by the non-trolls what has caused this sudden nasty troll infestation?
I’m guessing the trolls are poised to make BIG bucks off the construction of the permanent bases and U.S. control of the oil resources of Iraq.
What is your guess? (non-trolls ONLY!)
July 25th, 2007 at 6:20 pmOh HELL YES.
I had no idea this sort of legislation was in the works.
If you do anything this congress, Dems, do this.
You can’t take back the votes for the war and the votes for funding the surge, but you can begin to put things right by outlawing permanent occupation of Iraq.
If this thing becomes law, I’ll scream a big WAY TO GO.
Keep doing things like this, Democrats, and I might just stop hating you.

July 25th, 2007 at 7:08 pmI agree entirely.
I am extremely frustrated.
Bush&Co must be removed from office. They claim the votes aren’t there. Voters are clamoring for impeachment.
I hate that the congress is taking August off – but maybe they will hear more from their constituents and that will force the House to put impeachment back on the table.
I heard lame excuses from Steny Hoyer yesterday, taking up the Pelosi side of the debate.
Even if they don’t have the votes to pass it, couldn’t they at least present it and see what happens? The people would at least see that they are being heard.
So who’s going to protect Dick Cheney’s $100TT oil reserve investment? He didn’t plan this invasion/occupation – getting 100’s of thousands killed, spending $500BB, and destroying our international reputation, just to walk away from his oil. He’ll be hitting the scotch hard tonight, might even have to go quail slaughtering and shoot someone in the face, just to relieve the stress.
July 25th, 2007 at 7:19 pmKaty…thanks for the link. …

“I disagree that we cant resolve unrest in the Middle East as long as we have bases there. Quite the opposite – under the right leadership, military bases can be a beacon and an example of real American values.”
Well, that window of opportunity is totally gone. We’ve spent $500 Billion dollars, destroying that country and we won’t see the Iraqi people accepting our presence in our country in my lifetime. Too bad, too. They were the most secular, progressive society in the mid-east. What if we had simply worked a deal to buy their oil reserves for that pricetag? We may have solidified our control of the oil while keeping the RW religious fundies from creating their dream of a pan-Islamic Caliphate. Probably could have made Saddam an offer he couldn’t refuse, as well….given that he was a defanged old tyrant with no real options to disagree.
But the Greedy Oil Party had other delusions. Why anyone would think Dick Cheney and George Bush knew what they were doing in this hostile takeover of Iraqi National Oil obviously never checked their business or military backgrounds.
So, we’re out a Trillion or so, have a broken army, and still have no coherent energy/security plan. Damn shame that cancer wasn’t known as Al Qaeda….we lose 600,000 Americans/year to that terrorist….
July 25th, 2007 at 7:45 pm“it is the policy of the United States not to establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing a permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq.â€
Even if this bill becomes a law, the Bush administration will call these bases “enduring”, “persistent”, or anything other than “permanent”.
Because it doesn’t matter what the House intents, approves, or states; the Bush administration is not known for following the rules or abiding the law; whether domestic or international.
At any rate, the Bush administration will simply keep moving the goal posts -as they have for the past four years- to continue the occupation of Iraq. Until someone finds a way to make this White House comply with the spirit of the law, any further legislation is toothless.
July 25th, 2007 at 9:19 pmWe’ll only stay till the the oil has been used. That’s not permanent..
July 25th, 2007 at 10:45 pmThe Dem Congress has stones…nice.
July 26th, 2007 at 3:08 amNo dumbass troll comments about the bases that are already there not counting. No. Bad troll. **whacking with newspaper**
Out!

That’s a creative way of acknowledging that you’re unable to criticise any blatant spin here, no matter how obvious it is.
“Don’t interrupt us while we’re pretending here!!”
July 26th, 2007 at 8:16 amDo training camps for torture count ?
July 26th, 2007 at 8:23 amThat one seems pretty permanent.
Google “soaw”
LMAO. Yeah what’s with this coincidence between posting blatant misleading spin and people showing up calling it blatant misleading spin.
Someone get a slide rule and some coffee in here… this puzzle is gonna be an all-nighter.
July 26th, 2007 at 8:27 amWell no they can’t take back the surge.
But apparently if they continue funding the surge, do nothing to decrease the troop levels already there and merely pass legislation to not to have an additional surge, you’ll “scream a big WAY TO GO.”
Kinda like you’ve just done for them doing the same thing in regard to prohibiting more permanent military bases that nobody is asking for anyway.
July 26th, 2007 at 8:32 amThat’s really stupid.
July 26th, 2007 at 9:33 amGermany and South Korea up next, then? Clearly it’s more of a strategic asset to have our guys in Germany than in Iraq. Makes sense. Germany is where the action is at.
July 26th, 2007 at 10:57 amIf we don’t set up a base in Iraq, where will we attack Iran from? The Iraq War is tired, an Iran War would be the new hotness.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:10 pmPresident Bush was not elected by the people of the U.S. of A.
July 26th, 2007 at 3:07 pmThe Bush Administration is corrupt, has profusely lied and broken
the Constitution of these Great United States. He should have been gone
7 yrs ago! WAKE UP PEOPLE. SAVE YOUR RIGHTS AS AN AMERICAN
before our country becomes Germany of World War 2!
This is the Nazi regeme over again. And these are the facts people!
Face the truth about your government and your leaders.
Nancy Pelosi and her husband hold huge interests in Starkist/Del Monte based in American Samoa. That’s why she has consistantly voted down any attempt to raise the minimum wage for that one particular island, where there are two industries, canning and tourism. We should be paying attention to our leaders own personal interests in places around the world!
