Nancy Pelosi and her husband hold huge interests in Starkist/Del Monte based in American Samoa. That's why she has consistantly voted down any attempt to raise the minimum wage for that one particular island, where there are two industries, canning and tourism. We should be paying attention to our leaders own personal interests in places around the world!

If we don't set up a base in Iraq, where will we attack Iran from? The Iraq War is tired, an Iran War would be the new hotness.

Germany and South Korea up next, then? Clearly it's more of a strategic asset to have our guys in Germany than in Iraq. Makes sense. Germany is where the action is at.

I had no idea this sort of legislation was in the works.

If you do anything this congress, Dems, do this.

You can’t take back the votes for the war and the votes for funding the surge, but you can begin to put things right by outlawing permanent occupation of Iraq.

If this thing becomes law, I’ll scream a big WAY TO GO.

Keep doing things like this, Democrats, and I might just stop hating you.

Comment by Alejandro — July 25, 2007 @ 6:39 pm

Well no they can't take back the surge.
But apparently if they continue funding the surge, do nothing to decrease the troop levels already there and merely pass legislation to not to have an additional surge, you'll "scream a big WAY TO GO."

Kinda like you've just done for them doing the same thing in regard to prohibiting more permanent military bases that nobody is asking for anyway.

The percentage of post by NeoCon trolls in here has gotten really high. What’s happened?

Any guess by the non-trolls what has caused this sudden nasty troll infestation?

I’m guessing the trolls are poised to make BIG bucks off the construction of the permanent bases and U.S. control of the oil resources of Iraq.

What is your guess? (non-trolls ONLY!)

Comment by hterrya — July 25, 2007 @ 6:20 pm

LMAO. Yeah what's with this coincidence between posting blatant misleading spin and people showing up calling it blatant misleading spin.

Someone get a slide rule and some coffee in here... this puzzle is gonna be an all-nighter.

Do training camps for torture count ?
That one seems pretty permanent.

“it is the policy of the United States not to establish any military installation or base for the purpose of providing a permanent stationing of United States Armed Forces in Iraq.”

Even if this bill becomes a law, the Bush administration will call these bases "enduring", "persistent", or anything other than "permanent".

Because it doesn't matter what the House intents, approves, or states; the Bush administration is not known for following the rules or abiding the law; whether domestic or international.

At any rate, the Bush administration will simply keep moving the goal posts -as they have for the past four years- to continue the occupation of Iraq. Until someone finds a way to make this White House comply with the spirit of the law, any further legislation is toothless.

"I disagree that we cant resolve unrest in the Middle East as long as we have bases there. Quite the opposite - under the right leadership, military bases can be a beacon and an example of real American values."

Well, that window of opportunity is totally gone. We've spent $500 Billion dollars, destroying that country and we won't see the Iraqi people accepting our presence in our country in my lifetime. Too bad, too. They were the most secular, progressive society in the mid-east. What if we had simply worked a deal to buy their oil reserves for that pricetag? We may have solidified our control of the oil while keeping the RW religious fundies from creating their dream of a pan-Islamic Caliphate. Probably could have made Saddam an offer he couldn't refuse, as well....given that he was a defanged old tyrant with no real options to disagree.

But the Greedy Oil Party had other delusions. Why anyone would think Dick Cheney and George Bush knew what they were doing in this hostile takeover of Iraqi National Oil obviously never checked their business or military backgrounds.

So, we're out a Trillion or so, have a broken army, and still have no coherent energy/security plan. Damn shame that cancer wasn't known as Al Qaeda....we lose 600,000 Americans/year to that terrorist....

So who's going to protect Dick Cheney's $100TT oil reserve investment? He didn't plan this invasion/occupation - getting 100's of thousands killed, spending $500BB, and destroying our international reputation, just to walk away from his oil. He'll be hitting the scotch hard tonight, might even have to go quail slaughtering and shoot someone in the face, just to relieve the stress.

#21 TMM
I agree entirely.
I am extremely frustrated.
Bush&Co must be removed from office. They claim the votes aren't there. Voters are clamoring for impeachment.
I hate that the congress is taking August off - but maybe they will hear more from their constituents and that will force the House to put impeachment back on the table.
I heard lame excuses from Steny Hoyer yesterday, taking up the Pelosi side of the debate.
Even if they don't have the votes to pass it, couldn't they at least present it and see what happens? The people would at least see that they are being heard.

Oh HELL YES.

I had no idea this sort of legislation was in the works.

If you do anything this congress, Dems, do this.

You can't take back the votes for the war and the votes for funding the surge, but you can begin to put things right by outlawing permanent occupation of Iraq.

If this thing becomes law, I'll scream a big WAY TO GO.

Keep doing things like this, Democrats, and I might just stop hating you.

The percentage of post by NeoCon trolls in here has gotten really high. What's happened?

Any guess by the non-trolls what has caused this sudden nasty troll infestation?

I'm guessing the trolls are poised to make BIG bucks off the construction of the permanent bases and U.S. control of the oil resources of Iraq.

What is your guess? (non-trolls ONLY!)

Neither do I. I figured it was some kind of mix-up.
