Despite Congress’ Thrashing Of Gonzales, Snow Claims Nobody ‘Really Laid A Glove On Him’

During the White press briefing today, a reporter asked press secretary Tony Snow whether Alberto Gonzales had lost his “credibility” due to his apparently misleading testimony to Congress. Snow said he hadn’t, claiming “nobody’s really laid a glove” on the Attorney General yet:

QUESTION: But has it reached the point for the attorney general to — he’s lost his effectiveness and his credibility?

SNOW: Well, you know, what’s interesting is that there have been all these hearings on the attorney general and yet nobody’s really laid a glove on him. [...] At this point, we have hundreds of hearings that have produced bupkis.

Snow is dead wrong. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ multiple appearances before Congress have left his reputation in tatters. Sen. Patrick Leahy said, “I don’t trust you.” Sen. Arlen Specter said, “I do not find your testimony credible.” The Washington Post writes, “At what point does someone lose so much credibility that he should no longer serve in public office?”

In particular, the contradictions in Gonzales statements regarding the administration’s warrantless wiretapping program has members of the Senate Judiciary Committee considering an inquiry into whether he has perjured himself. In attempting to “clarify” his previous misstatments, Gonzales only appears to have lied again to Congress.

In fact, contrary to Snow’s claim that Congress never “laid a glove” on Gonzales, lawmakers yesterday leveled one blow after another to the Attorney General’s already-bruised credibility. Watch a compilation of some of the most vigorous exchanges:

Transcript:

SEN. PATRICK LEAHY (D-VT): This supposed self-examination, with no involvement by the courts, no reports to Congress, no other outside check, essentially translates to trust us.

Well, with a history of civil liberty abuses and cover-ups, this administration has squandered our trust. I am not willing to accept a simple statement of trust us. I don’t trust you.

[...]

SEN. ARLEN SPECTER (R-PA): if you won’t answer that question, my suggestion to you, Attorney General Gonzales, is that you review this transcript very, very carefully. I do not find your testimony credible, candidly.

When I look at the issue of credibility, it is my judgment that when Mr. Comey was testifying he was talking about the terrorist surveillance program and that inference arises in a number of ways, principally because it was such an important matter that led you and the chief of staff to Ashcroft’s hospital room.

When you say that you were going to get Ashcroft’s approval on another intelligence matter, it’s strains credulity that it would be other than the foremost program to go to his hospital room when he’s under sedation. And when you testified here this morning earlier that you were looking to see if Attorney General Ashcroft had sufficient capacity to answer the question as to the — as to his giving his approval, the man was under sedation.

It just — all the attendant circumstances make it appear, lead to the inference that we’re dealing with the terrorist surveillance program.

So my suggestion to you is that you review your testimony very carefully. The chairman’s already said that the committee’s going to review your testimony very carefully to see if your credibility has been breached to the point of being actionable.

[...]

SEN. SHELDON WHITEHOUSE (D-RI): And yet here, where there is something that you could do about it, since our past discussion, nothing has been done, the memo that has your signature makes it worse, and we’ve agreed that this connection between the White House and the Department of Justice is the most dangerous one from a point of view of the potential for the infiltration of political influence into the department.

How, in the light of all those facts, can I give you any credibility for being serious about the promises you’ve made that you intend to clean up the mess you’ve made?

[...]

SEN. CHARLES SCHUMER (D-NY): in all due respect, you’re just saying, Well, it was clarified with the reporter, and you don’t even know what he said. You don’t even know what the clarification is.

Sir, how can you say that you should stay on as attorney general when we go through exercise like this, where you’re bobbing and weaving and ducking to avoid admitting that you deceived the committee? And now you don’t even know.

I’ll give you another chance: You’re hanging your hat on the fact that you clarified the statement two days later. You’re now telling us that is was a spokesperson who did it. What did that spokesperson say?

Tell me now, how do you clarify this?

GONZALES: I don’t know, but I’ll find out and get back to you.

SCHUMER: How do you clarify this? This is serious, because it looks like you’ve deceived us.

GONZALES: Well…

LEAHY: In your own words, how would you clarify it?

SCHUMER: How would you clarify it? You don’t need to — if you, sir…

GONZALES: What I would — what I would say — let me answer the question.

SCHUMER: If you want to be attorney general, you should be able to clarify it yourself, right now, and not leave it to a spokesperson who you don’t know what he said.

Tell me how you clarify it.

GONZALES: Mr. Comey’s testimony about the hospital visit was about other intelligence activities — disagreement over other intelligence activities. That’s how we’d clarify it.

SCHUMER: That is not what Mr. Comey says. That is not what the people in the room say.

[...]Who sent you to the hospital?

GONZALES: Senator, what I can say is we’d had a very important meeting at the White House over one of the most…

SCHUMER: I didn’t ask that. I didn’t ask…

GONZALES: Well…

SCHUMER: You’ve discussed the meeting…

GONZALES: I’m answering your question, Senator…

SCHUMER: Who sent you?

GONZALES: … if I could.

SCHUMER: Did anyone tell you to go?

GONZALES: It was one of the most important programs for the United States. It was important — had been authorized by the president.

I’ll just say that the chief of staff to the president of the United States and the counsel to the president of the United States went to the hospital on behalf of the president of the United States.

SCHUMER: Did the president ask you to go?

GONZALES: We were there on behalf of the president of the United States.

SCHUMER: I didn’t ask you that.

GONZALES: I understand…

SCHUMER: Did the president ask you to go?

GONZALES: Senator, we were there on behalf of the president of the United States.

SCHUMER: Why can’t you answer that question?

GONZALES: That’s the answer that I can give you, Senator.

SCHUMER: Well, can you explain to me why you can’t answer it directly?

GONZALES: Senator, again, we were there on an important program for this president, on behalf of the president of the United States.

SCHUMER: Did you talk to the president about it beforehand?

GONZALES: Senator, obviously, there were a lot of discussions that happened during that period of time. This involved one of the president’s premier programs…

SCHUMER: I understand. But, sir, you’re before this committee. You are before this committee. You’re supposed to answer questions. You’ve not claimed any privilege. I don’t think there is any here. And I asked you a question. And you refuse to answer it.

GONZALES: Senator, if…

SCHUMER: Why?

GONZALES: I’ll go back — if I can answer the question, I will answer the question…

SCHUMER: I know. But could you tell me why you can’t answer this question?

GONZALES: Senator, because, again, this relates to activities that existed when I was in the White House. And because of that, with respect to your specific questions, I will go back and see whether or not I can answer the question.

[...]

SEN. RUSS FEINGOLD (D-WI): hen again last year you came to this committee and told us that there had not been any serious disagreement about the warrantless wiretapping program the president confirmed in late 2005, a statement I believe was misleading at best.

In every case you somehow managed to come up with some convoluted theory for why your statement was technically accurate. When you look at all these incidents together, it’s hard to see anything but a pattern of intentionally misleading Congress again and again.

Shouldn’t the attorney general of the United States meet a higher standard?

GONZALES: The attorney general of the United States should try to meet the highest standard. And I have tried to meet that standard, Senator.

FEINGOLD: Do you feel you’ve met that standard?

GONZALES: Obviously, there have been instances where I have not met that standard.

I guess it's tough to lay a glove on someone when they're all covered up and huddled in the fetal position. But hell, even that tactic didn't work, as several senators tagged Abu G with body blows and shots to the head.

Gonzo is so dazed he doesn't know whether he can't answer questions because of "executive privilege" or because he forgot what lie he told last time. But he does know he can't answer them. And they're good questions -- don't get him wrong. He just can't answer them.

I've said it a million times, but I'll say it again: George W. Bush and the senior members of his administration have no respect for the Constitution, and they have no respect for the rule of law. They will continue to show nothing but contempt for any attempts by Congress to exercise its oversight powers. Bush broke the law with this illegal wiretapping program (and continues to break it), and the only way to hold him accountable is to impeach him.

We all know that Gonzo is a waste of space, and the Bush gang are worthless. But what is ever going to be done about it? Hearing after hearing, Democrats rant and rave about catching another bushie in a lie. So what are they doing about it?

It's pretty obvious at this point that the Democrats plan is to put on a big show of how bad the Bush Admin. is for the next 12 months in hoping that it will convince voters next fall to go Democrat. But I don't believe for a second that anyone in the Bush Admin. is going to be let go or better yet impeached. The Democrat leaders have already ruled out pretty much any punishment for anyone in the Admin.

It sucks that there are only 2 viable parties to choose from come election time. At this point I am not very happy with either of them.

It used to be hard to fathom that there were/are people out there that just couldn't see what was going on right in front of their face, right under their noses. That what WE as a country used to hold so dear to us, what made US stand far from the rest was being SH$$ on right in front of us, I'm talking about the rule of law, the Constitution, decency, morality, right versus wrong, you know values.

Sure this country has not alway's been there and we still have a way to go, but we alway's knew what was right and what wasn't. But then, something happened.

Along came a group of people, (we'll call them Repuppetcans) and they started telling us that up was down, black was white, is isn't is if you dont know what the definition of is is. The media became objective instead of truthful and all hell broke loose.

We became monsters, all of a sudden we could do what we want, we could torture, lie, steal, lie. We could blame others for our mistakes and lie. We did things to people that we used to abhor and lied.

    And truths became lies.

And it was all Bill Clinton's fault.

So here came a man that said he was gonna be a uniter. He said that he was gonna change the culture of Washington. He said that his administration was going to be the most transparent ever. And that his people would always be held accountable as would he.

    And you know what?

    He lied

And those who support him know that he did, and the fact that you wont man/woman up and say so say's alot about where WE are as a country.

If your gonna blast your adversary when he/she does something wrong, stand up and do the same when it's your friend.

Its just as simple as that.

Tell me something here. I'm assuming we're on the same side, as an example I'd be for the impeachment of Bush, Cheney and Fredo.

Now that we have that out of the way, what reality are you referring to? To my mind, Snow is dead on the money on this topic. Fredo has been to congress three times, and each time he comes away unscathed. Unless embarrassment is what we're after here. But we're no closer to removing any of these three are we?

American see no problem with an Attorney General who completely messed up the Department of Justice and continuously lies under oath. Now all these people in jail for lying should ask to be released as lying is now legal. Libby should have only been charged with Obstruction of Justice as lying is not a crime in the United States. 67. Jessica Says:

I'm glad something is finally being done about Gonzales in a attempt to hold him accountable for his actions. The Iraq War bespeaks a lot about Bush’s personal shortcomings and his administration’s horrible policy choices. To date, the war has cost over $340 billion dollars—money which could have been spent much more wisely and with better end results. It is estimated, for example, that the expenditure of a mere $19 billion would eliminate starvation and malnutrition worldwide. In a time when the current defense budget is $522 billion, the goal of eradicating world hunger is clearly well within reach. Thus, it is clear that the occupation of Iraq needs to end, and it needs to end now without regard to what this will do to United States interest in Iraq’s oil. There are simply much more important issues that need to be addressed, and by avoiding these issues and adhering to his doomed quest for victory, Bush and Gonzales will only continue to fall in popularity polls.

Tangentially related, I post this in hopes that someone/anyone who will be able to attend any of the Democratic Prez open forum "debates" to ask any/all of the following questions dealing with government secrecy, illegality, and lack of ethics:

Do you believe that it is legitimate use of the classification system to hide illegal or unethical activities by the government? Do you believe it is appropriate use of the classification system to hide embarrassing actions by the government? Will you pledge, right now, to the American people to run the most open and non-secretive Administration in modern American history? Would you be supportive of a blanket, moving window of declassification that declassifies ALL government documents and activities that are 20 years old or older? Would you be supportive of legislation strictly limiting what can be classified and for how long - limiting classification to current intelligence methods and sources as well as military operations and capabilities? Would you support a federal Open Meetings law similar to that enjoyed by many states that prevents the People's government from holding secret meetings involving matters of public policy? If these laws are good enough for the states, do you not agree that a similar law is good enough for the PEOPLE'S federal government too? Would you support legislation strictly outlining what can and cannot be claimed under the rubric of "executive privilege"? Can you defend why ANY policy meeting should be secret from the American people since any and all policies that are ultimately decided upon DIRECTLY impacts the lives of the American people?

  91. lonesomerobot Says:

Namtillaku, don't underestimate senators leahy, schumer, feingold, whitehouse (and even specter, for that matter). they're taking this nice and slow for a reason - precedent.

consider what republicans would do if they had the precedent of an extremely hasty impeachment of a cabinet official (regardless of the merits of doing so). democrats would never be safe again. the first opening that presented itself, some republican would be pressing for impeachment because of trivial matters. because they have no respect for the rule of law.

i am impatient also, but i recognize that leahy, schumer, et al, are attempting to be as rigorous as possible in this process, for two reasons:

    a) so it can't be run roughshod in the future (not that it won't, but at least dems won't be giving them a precedent for doing so), and
    b) to let abu gonzales hang himself. which he has done (specter, the ranking republican, essentially said they were going to begin a perjury investigation).

this is very frustrating to us, but aside from the powers of the purse (which haven't been used very effectively, in my opinion) the constitution only gives congress one blunt weapon (impeachment of an executive or judicial official) with which to reassert itself. this blunt weapon has to be used wisely because, as we know by now, the other side has no qualms with "going nuclear".

and if this issue goes to court it's going to go through a judicial system that has been packed with six years of bush appointees. these guys know that and will avoid it if possible.

a special prosecutor AND a perjury investigation is what i'm hoping for. unfortunately, but for drips and drabs i'll bet we won't see another full episode in this process until after the august recess.

So why is he still there?

  95. bilbobaggins Says:

"and if this issue goes to court it’s going to go through a judicial system that has been packed with six years of bush appointees. these guys know that and will avoid it if possible."

They don't have to go to the courts, they have the power to find these people in Inherent Contempt, arrest them and try them before Congress. Unfortunately they are either too chicken or too lazy. I'm voting for lazy. If they had used Inherent Contempt, they would have had to give up their August vacation and held the trial. Instead, they chickened out.

  96. Bob Loblaw Says:

  98. John Gilpins Says:

No one has laid a glove on Alberto Gonzales. That's right!

That's because when Alberto Gonzales stepped into the hearing ring to duke it out he:

Slipped on a long, long, long, long, long, long, long trail of toilet paper still clinging to his ass. He was knocked out cold in .000005 seconds. Alberto Gonzales couldn't RECALL or REMEMBER that you're supposed to flush toilet paper after you do your "J-O-B/J-O-B-S.

In fact, Alberto Gonzales can't RECALL or REMEMBER lots of things when he's doing his J-O-B/J-O-B-S. His total job performance is just one shitty mess.

I've got news for you, Tony Snow. "LAID A GLOVE" is simply the wrong phrase. "CREAMED HIS ASS" is the appropriate phrase. The sad irony is that Congress didn't "CREAM ALBERTO'S ASS" as Alberto creamed his own ass.

Alberto's goose was cooked even before he stepped into the hearing ring. Everyone knew Alberto Gonzales was going to fall flat on his ass which is exactly what happened.

Luckily, the long, long, long, long, long, long, long trail of toilet paper still clingling to Alberto's ass cushioned his fall a little.

The hearing referees should have stopped this match a long time ago. A long time ago!

Was it Cheney who ordered Chertoff to kill the Ptech Investigation??? And Remember "Operation Greenquest?” That investigation was killed too!

    http://rigorousintuition.blogspot.com/2005/01/michael-chertoff-and-sabotage-of-ptech.html

A tipster was Indira Singh, who has said she recognizes the separate command and control communications system Mike Ruppert describes Dick Cheney to have been running on September 11th as having "the exact same functionality I was looking for (Ptech)."

The Ptech case turned into an ugly dispute last year when company whistleblowers told Greenquest agents about their own suspicions about the firm’s owners. Sources close to the case say those same whistleblowers had first approached FBI agents, but the bureau apparently did little or nothing in response. With backing from the National Security Council, Greenquest agents then mounted a full-scale investigation that culminated in a raid on the company’s office last December. After getting wind of the Greenquest probe, the FBI stepped in and unsuccessfully tried to take control of the case.

Whatever the truth, there is no dispute that the case has so far produced no charges and indictments against Al-Qadi or anyone else connected with Ptech.

What role did Dick Cheney play in killing the investigation into Al-Qadi?

Now, how does Chertoff figure in the Ptech story? It goes back to the turf war of two years ago over Operation Greenquest, "the high-profile federal task force set up to target the financiers of Al Qaeda and other international terrorist groups."

    *
Clearly ptech represent some nexus between the government and terrorism that must not be revealed, and Chertoff is just the man to cover it up.

A very well thought out analysis of the situation. I too am impatient with the process, but the dems need to be very careful of moving too fast. Showing due diligence in the process will make it more difficult for the Republicans to start an endless cycle of impeachment procedures in the future. The constant hearings are producing one thing - the crimes of this administration are on the news every night. Eventually, it will seep into the consciousness of the American people. I envision a day when a Republican can't get elected as dogcatcher.

    Gonzales is Domino #1

    ______________________

I just sent this to my House Representative. Please feel free to use it yourself, and share it around. Someone in the House must step up now, before Congress recesses, and start the dominoes falling:

    Dear Representative ...,

I have been watching Senate hearings at which Attorney General Gonzales is testifying about many, MANY irregularities and conflicting statements on several issues of national security etc. This man is not fit to continue in his position. He either seems confused, can't recall, or doesn't know the answer to most questions posed by the bipartisan Senate Committee. He's either lying about his involvement with various illegal activities, or he's incompetant! Either way, he needs to be removed.

    The Constitution says:

"The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. "

    and,

The President..."shall have Power to grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offences against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment."

I understand that to mean, if Congress impeaches Attorney General (or any other Bush appointee, cabinet member, civil employee etc.) Bush cannot pardon them and they will be held accountable.

I respectfully request that you begin impeachment proceedings against the Attorney General immediately. That will begin the unveiling of crimes and corruption that this administration has committed, and continues to commit.

    Thank You.

I also did a blog about our timidity regarding impeachment HERE.

Frank - I have a question for you. Would you really want a Democratic President to have all the powers that Bush has [awarded himself]?

Well, yes, every president should have all the powers that Bush (the presedent) has - only because separation of branches has always been in place. Bush didn’t award himself any new powers.

Would you really want a Democratic President who had done something wrong to be able to thumb their nose in the face of Congress and claim total “executive privilege”.

No one claimed TOTAL executive privilege, but let’s let Bill Clinton - who may not have thumbed his nose, but did wag his finger - answer that one.

“It depends on what the definition of the word “is” is.

Would you really want a Democratic President who had done something wrong to be able to thumb their nose in the face of Congress and claim total “executive privilege”.

    Documents Contradict Gonzales' Testimony:
"The dissent related to other intelligence activities," Gonzales testified at Tuesday's hearing. "The dissent was not about the terrorist surveillance program."

"Not the TSP?" responded Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y. "Come on. If you say it's about other, that implies not. Now say it or not."

"It was not," Gonzales answered. "It was about other intelligence activities."

A four-page memo from the national intelligence director's office says the White House briefing with the eight lawmakers on March 10, 2004, was about the terror surveillance program, or TSP.

The memo, dated May 17, 2006, and addressed to then-House Speaker Dennis Hastert, details "the classification of the dates, locations, and names of members of Congress who attended briefings on the Terrorist Surveillance Program," wrote then-Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte.

It shows that the briefing in March 2004 was attended by the Republican and Democratic House and Senate leaders and leading members of both chambers' intelligence committees, as Gonzales testified.

Schumer called the memo evidence that Gonzales was not truthful in his testimony.

Didn't lay a glove on him? Don't look now, but he's about to get worked over with a pair of brass knuckles.

(Yeah, it may have been a traffic accident, but Laura's boyfriend was not in Laura's car. He was in the car that she slammed into when she blew through the signal. He was not hit by an evil-doing terrorist, he was hit by Laura Bush . . . so no need for charges or investigation). Guaranteed: You, me, Arab guy slamming into girlfriend at cross-section (55 MPH speed limit) . . . . big trouble.

Just what these folks have done, lied about, covered up, black-mailed eachother about, and white-washed boggles the mind.

Seriously, how many second chances can you give someone. Gonzales could walk in the room, eat a baby, tell them all he did not eat a baby and never has, take a dump on the table...and they would STILL not do a single damn thing to fire his ass.

I'm not sure which is a worse sign for American politics. The corruption and partisanship of the justive department, or the fact that the people who are supposed to keep things in check refuse to do a single thing to keep people in check.

Seriously, how many second chances can you give someone. Gonzales could walk in the room, eat a baby, tell them all he did not eat a baby and never has, take a dump on the table…and they would STILL not do a single damn thing to fire his ass.

Who are they going to believe, Gonzo or their own lying eyes?

You’re just jealous because you’ve never had aged Velveeta. :P

    Comment by Zehava

It is well known amongst true gormands that 1986 is indeed an outstanding year for Velveeta! Aged... to... perfection!

Well, I have never in living memory purchased Velveeta, so it must really be the good stuff.

Damn it, this is Fix-all! Here's me with no dental, and I need new glasses as well. Now I'm all depressed. Pass me the long straw for the Box O' Wine. *sniff*

    Shane, want some....er, cheese?

"No one claimed TOTAL executive privilege, but let’s let Bill Clinton - who may not have thumbed his nose, but did wag his finger - answer that one.
It depends on what the definition of the word “is” is.
    Comment by r"

Sorry r, but Bill Clinton did not hide behind Executive Privilege. He allowed the people around him to testify. He allowed his Attorney General to appoint a special council to investigate him. He took his medicine like a man, unlike the coward Bush who is hiding behind the skirts of Miers and Taylor and behind the lies and obfuscations of Gonzo.

Told ya I was a classy chick, TRoS. I know all about cheese and wine and stuff. I even saw china dishes in a store once. Heh.

BTW, I don't care what anyone says, that Shane is OK. :D

It's been loads of fun, TRoS. Goodnight!!

  257. ABA Garor Says:

Ann Coulter! You on this website?

Today, for the frrst time, I found out that our First Lady killed her ex-boyfriend with her car. I am appalled.

She may not have meant to do it . . . . it's with out a doubt horrible . . . .but for all Americans ... it's human. Do we fry people in the Texas Pen for this type of activity? Yes. Do we also forgive wrongdoer's? Yes. But after investigation. In this case there was none!

How the hell can we trust your husband and Al Gonzo to administer justice, when in your case THERE WAS NONE???

  258. ABA Garor Says:

    Laura Bush,

    Stand up and explain!!!!!!

EXPLAIN WHY YOU SHOULD GETT A FREE PASS.

    No one else does.

    Luv ya. . . . but . . .

  260. bogtrotters Says:

Good morrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrning. I'd like to put in a plug for velveeta and sweet pickle sandwiches on white bread. Eat two of those and you'll turn so caucasian you'll never sink a jump shot again.

  261. loretta Says:

but that has to be "Wonder" bread, right?

  262. sunshine Says:

    Ahhh bpgtrptters.

Always great to be greeted by a racist in the morning!

Once I get my nappy hair in a net, I'm right off to Starbucks and then to the unemployment office. Then for a little b-ball.

Yeah, then we goin' to get some bros jumpin' over the fence in Matamoras, maybe carryin' a little powder, Ya' know.

YOU IDIOT. DARWIN WAS RIGHT - unfortunately in your case, evolution just wasn't effective. Social Services probably has some sort of human reconstruction program that might evolve you. . . . or maybe you could just eat so much Velveeta that you choke on a pickle.

    "Bring it on"

  268. Arroyo Says:

    lol!

That why Tony Snow (and any White House Press Secretary) is paid the "Goebbels Money" - to issue pronouncements like that.

    I feel sorry for Tony.

  269. loretta Says:

don't feel sorry for Tony. He is not, to my knowledge, a prisoner, rather, at this point, a conspirator.

  270. JoeH Says:

I hope that much of the damage this man and this administration has done can be undone, but dangerous precedents are being set.
