The AP reports that a four-page memo sent by then-National Intelligence Director John Negroponte in May 2006 confirms that a March 2004 White House intelligence briefing for top congressional leaders was on “the Terrorist Surveillance Program.”
The revelation is significant because just yesterday Alberto Gonzales testified that the White house briefing was about “other intelligence activities.”
“The dissent related to other intelligence activities,” Gonzales testified at Tuesday’s hearing. “The dissent was not about the terrorist surveillance program.”
“Not the TSP?” responded Sen. Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y. “Come on. If you say it’s about other, that implies not. Now say it or not.”
“It was not,” Gonzales answered. “It was about other intelligence activities.”
ThinkProgress obtained the document, which confirms the accounts of Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA) and Sen. John Rockefeller (D-WV), who claimed the briefings they received were about the administration’s NSA domestic surveillance program. Negroponte lists all the lawmakers who attended “briefings on the Terrorist Surveillance Program,” including the eight lawmakers who attended the March 10, 2004 meeting.
Gonzales’ misleading response appears to be an effort to resolve discrepancies with his earlier statements. In Feb. 2006, Gonzales testified that “there has not been any serious disagreement” about the warrantless spying program conducted by the National Security Agency (NSA). Testimony by former Deputy Attorney General James Comey proved there were indeed serious disagreements when the administration tried to seek legal approval for the spying program in 2004.
Instead of settling the contradictions in his testimony, Gonzales is simply compounding his problems by continuing to mislead Congress. MSNBC’s David Shuster reported tonight that “this is a really, really big deal and a big problem for Gonzales. … The legal expert I talked to tonight said this is a clear case of perjury.” Watch it:

July 26th, 2007 at 3:12 amABA Garor, Libby got 2 and 1/2 years for what Clinton did.
July 26th, 2007 at 3:12 amUnder existing law, if Gonzo were found guilty of certain misconduct in one court, another court would have to take the original court's findings as true and therefore preclude any argument to the contrary.
Although, in most states, the findings of an administrative agency might not surmount the rule of law as later found by a court, because Texas attorneys are regulated by the Supreme Court of Texas and not an administrative agency, the Supreme Court's findings would prevail over any prior decision or opinion.
If the Texas Supreme Court were to find as a fact that Gonzo or Miers had fudged on the truth or otherwise violated the Rules of Professional Conduct for attorneys and were thereafter disbarred, the findings would be written in stone, irrefutable unless appealled and disproved.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
July 26th, 2007 at 3:26 amIt's called res judicada. A thing already ajudicated cannot be ajudicated again. States, under the Constitution of the United States, are empowered to give their citizens more, not less, rights than the federal government gives to them. Therefore, if Texas decides to impose heavier ethical burdens on its attorneys than Wash DC does, it's entitled and the Feds must respect that decision.
July 26th, 2007 at 3:36 amI always try to listen very carefully when the Attorney General speaks. Here's what he said in the clip:
Gonzales said, "It was not about the Terrorist Surveillance Program that the President announced to the American people."
I believe that the qualifier that he added (in bold) was deliberate. If questioned, he will point out that there are differences between the amount of information the President revealed and the additional information that was given to those who were briefed.
If asked what those differences are he will refuse to answer on grounds of national security.
July 26th, 2007 at 3:52 amAdministrator,
I answer because, I think you and I are the only ones awake.
What's up? do you think think that there's another program?
From what I understand, it's one program with multiple parts, some of which were objectionable, some of which were not. (when I say "objectionable", I mean to dub'ya - what he considers objectionable and that which I consider so are at odds)
July 26th, 2007 at 4:03 amI think there may be another explanation - that this administration has multiple covert (illegal / unconstitutional) domestic spying programs, and the Attorney General has simply confused them.
"Oh, you mean the TSP that we actually informed Congress about! Yeah, we may have briefed you guys about that one." (smirk, smirk)
July 26th, 2007 at 4:25 amPlease indulge me . . . if not the (unconstitutional) spying program, what else?
July 26th, 2007 at 4:43 amYes, that "Constitutional domestic spying program."

July 26th, 2007 at 5:12 am"The CDI's Ledeen, Amitay and Sobhani were featured speakers at a May 2003 forum on "the future of Iran' sponsored by AEI, the Hudson Institute and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. The forum, chaired by the Hudson Institute's Meyrav Wurmser, the Israeli-born wife of David Wurmser (he serves as Cheney's leading expert on Iran and Syria), included a presentation by Un Lubrani of Israel's Ministry of Defense.
Summarizing the sentiment of neoconservative ideologues and strategists, Meyrav Wurmser said: "Our fight against Iraq was only a battle in a long war. It would be ill-conceived to think we can deal with Iraq alone. We must move on, and faster."
JINSA, a neoconservative organization established in 1976 that fosters closer strategic and military ties between the United States and Israel, also has its sights on Iran. At a JINSA policy forum in April 2003 titled "Time to Focus on Iran-The Mother of Modern Terrorism," Ledeen declared, "The time for diplomacy is at an end; it is time for a free Iran, free Syria and free Lebanon."
JINSA, along with CSP, serves as one of the main institutional links to the military-industrial complex for neoconservatives. Ledeen served as JINSA's first executive director and was JINSA's "Godfather," according to Amitay. Amitay is a JINSA vice chair. JINSA board members or advisers also include former CIA director James Woolsey, former Rep. Jack Kemp and the AEI's Joshua Muravchik. After he joined the administration, Feith resigned from JINSA.'s board of advisers, as did Vice President Dick Cheney and Undersecretary of State for Arms Control John Bolton."

July 26th, 2007 at 5:37 am"If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, THE TRUTH IS THE GREATEST ENEMY OF THE STATE."

Bin Laden's Former Girlfriend Reveals Shocking Details in New Book

By John Gibson
Bin Laden had the hots for Whitney Houston.
That's what we're learning from Kola Boof, the Sudanese poet and novelist whose new book "Diary of a Lost Girl" draws on her experiences as one of bid Laden's girlfriends. Actually she says she was bin Laden's sex slave for a while.

We need to use the ANTI-TRUST LAWS (you remember laws?) to break up the triad of Propaganda networks that have enabled this military coup, and take the money out of the election process and Nationalize the oil industry and recover all of the ill-gotten gains that these criminals have stolen from our Treasury, and bring the damn troops home and cut off Israel from receiving another dime.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:59 amAce,
Interesting comments. However, David Wurmser no longer "serves as Cheney’s leading expert on Iran and Syria," he resigned this week.
What is your take on his resignation?
Also, what role does AIPEC play in this pic? If any?
July 26th, 2007 at 6:08 amTen warning signs ignored at your own peril…
1. Protest war, lose your property?
On July 17th, The White House quietly announced an Executive Order entitled "Blocking Property of Certain Persons Who Threaten Stabilization Efforts in Iraq." Among other developments, it gives Bush the power to "block" the property of people in the US found to "pose a significant risk of committing" an act of violence which might undermine "political reform in Iraq."
The terms "significant threat" and "act of violence" are unclear. If you attend a demonstration against Bush's definition of "political reform in Iraq" would that count? How about writing an angry letter to the editor?
The vague language also includes outlawing "the making of any contribution or provision of funds, goods, or services by, to, or for the benefit of any person whose property and interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order." What if you donate to an anti-war group which, outside of your knowledge, has been blacklisted by the government? Does that mean that your property can be "blocked"?
Similar to the Patriot Act, the potential implications are staggering.
2. Market meltdown
Economic fallout from the subprime mortgage market collapse has extended further, with prominent investment company Bear Stearns admitting last week that two of its hedge funds, once estimated at $1.6 billion, are now of "very little value."
Meanwhile, the prestigious Bank for International Settlements released a statement warning that the global economy could be facing a Great Depression, and that the dollar in particular "remains vulnerable to a sudden loss of private sector confidence."
Fasten your seatbelts.
3. Escalating US military operations in Pakistan
Following 911, the Bush administration propped up Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf as a key ally in the "war on terror," spending billions of dollars on Pakistan's military while ignoring Musharraf's support for the Taliban. Those days might be over. Just last week, the White House announced US military forces could be deployed to strike "actionable targets" in the country - with or without Musharraf's permission.
The Bush administration threatened to bomb Pakistan "back to the Stone Age" in 2001 if it didn't deal with the Taliban, but Musharraf has so far been able to convince the US that if his administration falls, then Pakistan will be ruled by Islamists. As a former CIA officer recently told National Public Radio, "I've heard Gen. Musharraf ... tell American presidents that if you don't support me, the next person will be the 'bearded ones'."
But Musharraf faces growing domestic opposition for his strong-arm tactics, and while last week's brutal storming of the Lal Masjid Mosque in Islamabad may have won bonus points in Washington, it only served to further alienate the Pakistani people.
In other words, US military action in Pakistan will most likely destabilize the Musharraf government, and may in fact push Pakistan's nuclear arsenal into the hands of a government of "bearded ones."
4. Loose nukes
It was recently reported that the US had quietly removed 130 of its nuclear warheads from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany. That still leaves over 350 US warheads across Europe, but the question remains: what happened to the Ramstein nukes? The Pentagon and German Defense Ministry aren't talking, and it can't necessarily be assumed that the warheads have been destroyed. Shuffled to some different country with less stringent weapons controls or hidden away for use in future conflicts perhaps - who knows.
Meanwhile, in late June, the Senate Appropriations Committee voted to fund by $66 million the production of even more nuclear warheads.
5. VP Arnie?
Schwarzenegger visited his hometown of Graz, Austria in late June, ostensibly to attend the birthday party of a friend. The warm welcome he received was quite a change from two years ago, when tensions flared with town elders over his position on the death penalty and failure to stop an execution in California. The war of words escalated until Schwarzenegger requested that Graz remove his name from a local sports stadium, and in a move reminiscent of high school crushes, he returned a ring which city officials had given him.
This time around, however, Schwarzenegger was conciliatory and local politicians clamored for photo ops - effectively sweeping bad blood under the carpet. How convenient, and how necessary, for Schwarzenegger and any ambitions he may have for 2008.
6. Cutting off Iraq's water supply
For years, the Turkish government has tried to get international funding to build a dam across the Tigris River. The potential impact on villagers and the environment has stalled the project, and both Iraq and Syria have expressed concern that the proposed Ilisu dam could give Turkey power over their water supply.
European entities considering funding the project have received strong public pressure to back out, and if they do, China appears only too happy to step in and help build the dam.
Meanwhile, an estimated 250,000 Turkish troops are amassed near Northern Iraq and just this week, the Prime Minister of Turkey threatened to invade the country.
Long story short, Turkey and China are increasingly likely to assume a major role in both Iraq and Syria. Doesn't bode well for the Bush's administration's plans.
7. GPS losing its way
The US monopoly over satellite navigation systems appears to be drawing to a close. The Global Positioning System (GPS) has enabled civilians to find their destinations and the military to coordinate troop movements and detect nuclear detonations, but the US system will soon face international competition. Global Navigation Satellite Systems are being developed by Europe, China and India while a Russian system may be operational as early as 2009 - another challenge to US hegemony on the international stage.
8. New Russian arms race?
This month, Russia pulled out of the Treaty for Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, established in 1990 to reduce the number of conventional weapons (such as tanks and combat aircraft) in Europe. Russia's move signals the latest salvo in a power struggle between European leaders and Russian President Putin, who is dead set against the establishment of new US military bases and anti-missile systems in eastern Europe and central Asia. But if Russia is not convinced to rejoin the arms Treaty, then by the end of the year it can establish weapons arsenals without NATO inspections and Putin may begin pulling out of other international arms agreements, as Bush has done. Could be the start of a new global arms race.
9. Murdoch's megalomania
Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has his sites on Dow Jones & Co., publisher of The Wall Street Journal and Barron's, among others, and owner of stock market indicators such as the Dow Jones industrial average. Murdoch's News Corp already controls an outrageous number of newspapers, magazines, TV networks, cable channels and film studios across the world and as Business Week observed in 2004, Murdoch "is not shy about using his media outlets to pursue agendas, whether they're politically conservative causes or his own business interests."
For example, the UK's Guardian pointed out that every single one of Murdoch's 175 newspapers across the globe parroted his pro-war views before the invasion of Iraq.
News Corp offered $5 billion for Dow Jones, the board of directors gave its approval and as early as next week a final decision will be reached. If successful, Murdoch's power in the US will expand even further.
10. "Bring it on" Iran
The Senate recently voted 97-0 in favor of hawk Joe Lieberman's Amendment effectively blaming Iran for complicity in the death of American soldiers; it's worth noting that both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton sided with Lieberman on the vote. Meanwhile, a third US aircraft carrier is on its way towards Iran and the UK's Guardian quoted a "well-placed Washington source" as saying "Bush is not going to leave office with Iran still in limbo."
So the drumbeat of impending doom continues, along with warnings of upcoming false flag events - a new Gulf of Tonkin or 911 - timed before Congress votes on Defense Appropriations in September.
Stay tuned...

I have done so at other times, but as there was virtually no conversation going on here earlier, I took the liberty to post as much truth as possible, in an order that I believe provides context to enable a clear view of the larger conspiracy - which at this stage is undeniably in play.
The Conspiracy Theorists are being proven correct with each new revelation.
The grand jig saw puzzle is being put together before your very eyes, and the picture it reveals represents the greatest, most complex conspiracy ever conceived in the history on mankind.
Only when all of the pieces of the puzzle are provided in one place, can the people see the entire picture.
July 26th, 2007 at 6:46 am“The dissent related to other intelligence activities,†Gonzales testified at Tuesday’s hearing. “The dissent was not about the terrorist surveillance program.â€
Which leaves two options for this investigation:
1. Accept Gonzales' explanation that this dissent about other unknown surveillence programs which went too far (as opposed to the one everyone knows about) and finally start asking questions about these as yet unspecified programs that are so objectionable, or
2. Pursue perjury charges on the grounds that he says someone disagreed about on thing rather than another, which matters to fkn nobody.
You fkn idiots.
These hearings are into the secret domestic surveillence programs that have been introduced which after months of hearings you still have fkall details of, not what Gonzales thinks was the reason people raised their voices at a meeting.
You fkn idiots. This is like arguing over the font used to write There's A WMD in This Iraqi Shed from Colin Powell's UN presentation and calling it a win like this was what everyone wanted to get to the bottom of.
Gonzales should just show up tomorrow with an assortment of shiny objects, spread em out on the table and walk the fk out. Clearly he isn't needed for these idiots to distract themselves with something pointless.

This is a grand fishing expedition adding to the pile of fishing expeditions the dems seem to find so important (rather than the real work that needs to be done). They have the right to go fishing, the dems have no right to abrogate executive priviledge to do so.
Now the dems are getting ready to issue contempt citations and that is going to fall flat and hard right in their faces. They are on thin ice and dont seem to know it.

July 26th, 2007 at 7:07 amPresident Bush said the United States does not torture prisoners, commenting after Vice President Dick Cheney embraced the suggestion that a dunk in water might be useful to get terrorist suspects to talk.
WATERBOARDING:
Waterboarding is a type of torture used in coercive interrogations or for punishment. The modern form of the practice simulates drowning and produces a severe gag reflex, making the subject believe his or her death is imminent while ideally not causing permanent physical damage.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterboarding
TORTURE:
The word torture is commonly used to mean the infliction of pain to break the will of the victim or victims. Any act by which severe pain, whether physical or psychological, is intentionally inflicted on a person as a means of intimidation, deterrence, revenge, punishment, sadism, information gathering, or to obtain false confessions for propaganda or political purposes may be called torture.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torture
ORWELLIAN:
The term "Orwellian" usually refers to one or more of the following:
Manipulation of language for political ends. Most significantly by introducing to words meanings in opposition to their denotative meanings.
Invasion by the state of personal privacy, whether physically or by means of surveillance.
The total control of daily life by the state, as in a "Big Brother" society.
Active encouragement by the state of "doublethink," whereby the population must learn to embrace inconsistent concepts without dissent.
The denial or rewriting of past events.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orwellian
Perhaps the torture of Gonzales and Rove is in order. After all, they're the ones that mainstreamed the concept and fought to make it legal.
July 26th, 2007 at 7:08 amThe Big Lie
All this was inspired by the principle - which is quite true in itself - that in The Big Lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper stata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily, and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to The Big Lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.
It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously. Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying.
- Adolf Hitler, in Mein Kampf
July 26th, 2007 at 7:09 amHITLER
The Reichstag Burns
Adolf Hitler, the new Chancellor of Germany, had no intention of abiding by the rules of democracy. He intended only to use those rules to legally establish himself as dictator as quickly as possible then begin the Nazi revolution.
Even before he was sworn in, he was at work to accomplish that goal by demanding new elections. While Hindenburg waited impatiently in another room, Hitler argued with conservative leader Hugenberg, who vehemently opposed the idea. Hitler's plan was to establish a majority of elected Nazis in the Reichstag which would become a rubber stamp, passing whatever laws he desired while making it all perfectly legal.
Hitler's storm troopers were about to reach new heights of power of their own and begin a reign of terror.
President Hindenburg had fallen under Hitler's spell and was signing just about anything put in front of him. He signed an emergency decree that put the German state of Prussia into the hands of Hitler confidant, Vice Chancellor Papen. Göring as Minister of the Interior for Prussia took control of the police. Prussia was Germany's biggest and most important state and included the capital of Berlin.
Göring immediately replaced hundreds of police officials loyal to the republic with Nazi officials loyal to Hitler. He also ordered the police not to interfere with the SA and SS under any circumstances. This meant that anybody being harassed, beaten, or even murdered by Nazis, had nobody to turn to for help.

That my friend is conspiracy-mongering. Some nukes got moved, you think there is some plot to disperse them to shady characters, and then you admit you have no clue where they went. Laughable!
BTW, 66 million bucks for nuclear warhead production is NOTHING,; do you have any idea how much nukes cost? The U.S. government spends that much on pens and paperclips every year.

Hey ace, I don't care if you're right or wrong and I've got absolutely no interest in your screeds. That means that I have absolutely no point in refuting your points either, so stop using that as an excuse for your continuing trolling here on TP.
The problem is that you mess up the threads even worse than the trolls. Look, upthread and you see that even regular users are complaining about you? Why do you keep terrorizing TP?
Create your own blog, man! Go to multiply.com, for instance.
It's a very advanced form of a blog. You can embed images, videos, audio and you can restrict who can view your posts and participate in the discussion - if you want to. No-one's going to pester you over there. Furthermore, Google's web crawlers regularly harvest those pages, so you'll get lots of visibility, too.
If you want to advertise your blog here, I'm perfectly ok with it if you drop a link or two in a thread, but this current spamming must stop.
Every wonder why TP keeps deleting your posts? It's not because of their content, as you'd like to believe, but because you keep wasting their bandwidth and messing up these threads.

Trolls can be existing members of a community that rarely post and often contribute no useful information to the thread, but instead make argumentative posts in an attempt to discredit another person, concentrating almost exclusively on facts irrelevant to the point of the conversation, with the intent of provoking a reaction from others. The key element under attack by a troll is known only to the troll.

"The buck stops here" is actually attributed to the great Harry Truman.

Those people say they disagreed about something different.

July 26th, 2007 at 7:57 amLoretta,
Oops. Thank you for the correction. I regret the mistake. Unfortunately, like GWB, Truman faced terrible public support; however, unlike Bush, he took responsibility. Please forgive me if I'm wrong again, but I think that Truman's lowest approval ratings in the polls was 33% and Bush is now at 35%.
Again, I appreciate the tactful clarification.
July 26th, 2007 at 8:10 am#93 Wasn’t Clinton disbarred for lying under oath?
As point of fact, he agreed to be disbarred and take a tounge-lashing from the judge as part of a deal to get Ken Starr to go away. It was a reasonable compromise - it threw Starr a bone, since he could pin nothing criminal on him, and it ended the long ridiculous matter.
And, as a point of law, Clonton did not commit perjury, Eck. Perjury requires, by statute, that the matter in question be material to the case - and Lewinsky was ruled immaterial to the Paula Jones lawsuit by the judge. Nothing he said about the affair, then, could be perjurious under the law.
Furthermore, it's arguable that he didn't even lie under oath - he wiggled within the narrow definition of sex Ken Starr gave him, and of a broader definition of "Oval Office" that's commonly used in the White House (it includes the surrounding offices, not the single room). Lawyerly and weaselly, yes. An outright lie? Arguably not.
He certainly lied to the American people in a press conference about the affair, but that wasn't under oath.
July 26th, 2007 at 8:15 amLoretta,
To further clarify, I agree that Harry Truman was a great president. Dub'ya apparently entertains the delusion that God will re-define history so that his legacy will parallel that President Truman.
Yeah, and so said George.
Plan B anyone?
July 26th, 2007 at 8:24 amSo you have a letter from John Negroponte to Dennis Hastert that is supposed to prove that Alberto Gonzales lied? Unless Gonzales was reading other peoples mail, what does this prove? Even so, I don't see Gonzales' name anywhere in the letter. I don't see him even referred to.
Your "smoking gun" is reduced to one of those toy pistols with the little flag that says "bang" sticking out of it.
4 or 5 senators, some with shaky reputations themselves, and credibility problems to boot, don't like Gonzales answers and this is supposed to be impeachment time, (again)?
The American public isn't buying it. A great portion of the country doesn't even know who Alberto Gonzales is. The congressional "dog and pony show" is providing plenty of "red meat" for the folks who already hate Bush and this administration, but is doing nothing toward convincing the American public that this isn't "status quo".
The fact that congress seems to have plenty of time to hold plenty of hearings about what is essentially nonsense, but doesn't appear to have the time to actually legislate, is further proof that congress deserves it's low approval ratings.
One would think congress' approval ratings couldn't go any lower...think again. If they waste much more time trying to get rid of an AG who going to most likely be gone in 17 months anyways, just watch those number swing lower still!

July 26th, 2007 at 8:40 amI think this is as appropriate time as any to revisit this musical number from "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" (sung by Charles Durning). This applies not only to the Gonzo situation, but many others in this administration.
THE SIDESTEP
From : "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas"
(Carol Hall)
Charles Durning
Fellow Texans, I am proudly standing here to humbly see.
I assure you, and I mean it- Now, who says I don't speak out as plain as day?
And, fellow Texans, I'm for progress and the flag- long may it fly.
I'm a poor boy, come to greatness. So, it follows that I cannot tell a lie.
Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don't-
I've come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step,
cut a little swathe and lead the people on.
Now my good friends, it behooves me to be solemn and declare,
I'm for goodness and for profit and for living clean and saying daily prayer.
And now, my good friends, you can sleep nights, I'll continue to stand tall.
You can trust me, for I promise, I shall keep a watchful eye upon ya'll...
Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don't-
I've come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step,
cut a little swathe and lead the people on.
Now, Miss Mona, I don't know her, though I've heard the name, oh yes.
But, of course I've no close contact, so what she is doing I can only guess.
And now, Miss Mona, she's a blemish on the face of that good town.
I am taking certain steps here, someone somewhere's gonna have to close her down.
Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep, now they see me now they don't-
I've come and gone and, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step,
cut a little swathe and lead the people on.
Ooh I love to dance a little sidestep...
And, ooh I love to sweep around the wide step...
Cut a little swathe and lead the people on.
July 26th, 2007 at 8:46 amMr. Gorton,
I probably couldn't have screwed that up any better. I am truly embarrassed.
The point remains the same. Bush walks like a drunk in a china cabinet, spews fear and mongers money for his elite constituents. He has no regard for the 3.5K plus American lives lost (and who knows how many Iraqi lives lost) in his Iraqi debacle.
The Gulf Coast remains in shambles; healthcare, border secruity and the deficit remain in crisis state, but all we get are periodic five-siren alarms that the terrorists are on our doorsteps. Not his fault, be scared and the top 1% need that tax break.
Stay the course.
July 26th, 2007 at 8:54 amHey O.! Don't know what you're talking about. The rest of us bigfeet can smell the corruption all the way up here in the Pacific Northwest. I think the humans must be able to tell that the Justice Department has died and its bloated carcass must be removed from Washington. And the head is the nastiest part.

July 26th, 2007 at 9:08 amThis is perjury, no doubt. We all knew Gonzo was lying his a$$ off, and now we have concrete evidence of the fact.
July 26th, 2007 at 9:08 amrockyroad
The Republicans are the party of personal responsibility. They personally assign it to everyone else.
July 26th, 2007 at 9:15 amThe same thing should happen to Gonzo that should happen to Bush and Cheney. Simply put, they should be in prison awaiting sentencing for treason, war crimes, torture, violations of the U.S. Constitution, perjury, obstruction of justice, etc. By the way, what is the punishment for war crimes and treason. I believe it's much worst than impeachment.
July 26th, 2007 at 9:17 amThanks Tripster.
July 26th, 2007 at 9:19 amThis is becoming more and more like the Valerie Wilson/Scooty Libby investigation. The tragedy is the Administration is gaming the system, Big Time. If everyone with Bush and Co is loyal to the Pres, then it appears not to matter what is being said to Congress, just so long as it does not point back to the Bush/Cheney inner circle. This is why Fitzgerald had such a hard time. The WH didn't even have to get their stories straight--it works better for them if their testimonies didn't match.
No one, it appears, in the WH is loyal to the US Constitution; there will be no John Dean/Deep Throat this time. And in case our republican friends still are in the dark, politicizing the DOJ, or the Pentagon, or other bureaus will be horrible if the DEMOCRATS won the WH in 2008. But it appears that fixing elections is what Bush/Cheney were doing--for 2008. That is why the investigation.
The Congress is just doing their responsibility; since there was woefully little oversight in the previous GOP majorities, there will be some tedious details to catch up on. I will insist that they keep up with their responsibility. With this "go slow" republican minority, it does give dems more time to persue.

Thanks for your posts Ace. Good work!
July 26th, 2007 at 9:32 amA great portion of the country doesn’t even know who Alberto Gonzales is.
Think about it folks. That is where the Bush supporters come from.
July 26th, 2007 at 9:45 amGonzo's in deep. Tuesday's testimony probably did him in. Will he resign or face empeachment? I'm not a Washington insider, but is it possible that he has an ace up his sleeve with the "other national security matters" line?
Appears that the Gang of Eight ain't buying his "this was not about the NSA wiretapping."
July 26th, 2007 at 9:49 amAce, Great posts, as always. Just catching up here. It looks like our disheveled, dishonored, and amoral AG has finally been placed into the corner, by his own admissions. Either way, he's perjured himself - either during sworn testimony #1 or sworn testimony #2. Now we have documental evidence that this program was the "same program" and the one which the "gang of 8" were apprised of. Not only can I NOT believe that this guy is an attorney, but to be the Chief Attorney in the nation, bobbing and weaving with the knock-out punches wielded by Schumer & Feingold, he looked more like Howdy Doody. Can you imagine having this charlatan representing you in a court of law??
July 26th, 2007 at 9:52 amWhen you revisit Gonzo's testimonial hedging, the moment he is backed into the corner on "who sent you to Ashcroft's sickbed?", it's clear that he begins to decompensate. He spirals out of control after he admits to yet another illegal spying program and his facial expression when he realizes that he's just indicted his "boss", the Shrub, is priceless.
July 26th, 2007 at 9:54 amI really don't know how much more damage this GOP can tolerate at this point? I realize that the Dems want to keep the GOP hypocrisy front and center to make it a slamdunk in 08; however, in listening to what Bruce Fein said on Bill Moyers as well as Keith Olberman's special on impeachment last night, I believe that the "fix" for this constitutional crisis IS impeachment and it has to be accomplished if we want to turn back the clock on presidential abuse of power. Otherwise, succeeding administrations will pick up where this thug left off.
It really should be about Bush and Cheney at all (personally) but at this point, they've made themselves more hated than Cruella DeVille; however, it should be about reversing the constitutional "high crimes and misdemeanors" which we know they have committed. And, it needs to occur right now - not next month or next year.
After all, if Nixon had been forced to apologize instead of flouting his illegal activities back in the 70's as well as receiving some sort of penalty for his actions, perhaps we would not be revisiting the same problem again now in this administration??
I guess it makes the case for the adage: If you don't get the lesson the first time, you can bet your sweet ass that you'll be given another opportunity to learn the same lesson - with the known caveat: The lesson increases in difficulty exponentially each time it visits you!!

July 26th, 2007 at 10:09 amWhat you folks appear to forget is this:
If Gonzales leaves office, one way or another, what do we get? Another Bush appointee. Bush isn't going to appoint anyone the Bush haters approve of, (even if it were someone the Bush haters currently DO like, as soon as Bush announced the apointment, the Bush haters would turn on the appointee..."if Bush appointed (insert name here), he/she must be corrupt!) so it will just be more of the same over here at TP.
Whomever the new appointee may be, they will be a mere caretaker of the office of AG. About the time they get a handle on the job, it will most likely be time to leave.
Talk about side-stepping? How about addressing the issues of partisan hacks like Schumer, who never met a Republican he didn't think was a rich crook, or folks like Leahy, who couldn't keep a secret if his life depended on it.
I'll address these two: Neither Schumer nor Leahy have any credibility with the Conservative/Republican base, which whether you like it or not, still exists out here in the United States. Therefore, right or wrong, we don't care what they have to say.
As for rockyroad, who compares folks who don't know who Gonzales is with dimwits, that's not the case at all. A great portion of the U.S. doesn't CARE who Gonzales is. Face it: Most folks in the United States don't live political lives. We go to work, go home, play ball with the kids, etc. All the nonsense of cogressional hearings is just background noise with nothing apparent being accomplished. Ask the average person: What is the legislature supposed to do?, the answer will most likely be: Legislate.
Even when Clinton was being impeached, congress' approval ratings slipped. The people are tired of negative politics, period. It doesn't matter which side of the aisle you are from. When is congress going to learn that simple truth?
Furthermore, folks are fed up with the Republicans AND the Democrats. However, we've been brainwashed into accepting one or the other, so third party presidential candidates, unless immensly popular, (and SERIOUS, unlike Perot) act as mere spoilers.
Folks here have called me out to clarify my political stand, most likely, so they can continue to hack away at it. Here's my Presidential voting record over the last couple decades:
1988: Supported Pat Robertson, was a local Robertson organizer in southern Illinois. Voted for BushOne since Robertson obviously didn't get the nomination.
1992: Voted for James "Bo" Gritz in the Arizona General Election. He got enough support in AZ to get on the ballot, but obviously not enough to actually go anywhere politically.
1996: Patrick Buchanan supporter. Ended up voting for Dole, of course.
2000: Buchanan supporter again. This time all the way. If I remember right, Buchanan made the ballot in AZ on the Reform ticket. All the Buchanan campaign signs from Laughlin, Nevada to Needles, California, through Bullhead City and Ft. Mohave Arizona were pretty much the work of my then 3 year old son and myself.
2004: Voted for Bush, of course. no realistic alternative.
Basically, I'm a Conservative before I am a Republican, but there's no way I am ever going to vote for a Liberal.
So let the flames begin!

Simple...see. Just read what is in front of you. But like the Republitrolls they are they OBSFISCATE, OBSFISCATE, OBSFISCATE. While we are busy trying to get to the first layer of crap of the administration, they tell us it does not need to be cleaned, "we cleaned it last year", Clinton made it dirty by lying about a personal matter with a consenting adult, It is a power of the Executive to have a PRIVILEGE THAT TRUMPS OUR LAWS.

Good to see that AP, Think Progress, and the Democratic media are keeping an open mind about all possibilities before jumping to conclusions.......

For the love of reality, please, please visit your local library or perhaps try WhiteHouse.gov and carefully examine the date when Baby-Georgie first took the oath of office. Now, I know this will be a mind bending experience, but if you look at the date very closely you'll discover that it was before 9/11/2001. Okay, in case you're still clueless, let me remind you that we only have ONE President in office at a time. So Mr. Clinton was not in office for about 8 months before 9/11 and Mr. Bush was in office for about 8 months before 9/11.
It's just more of the Rovian Sandbox Guide to Politics. I think chapter 3 is "But teacher, Johnny did it first..." We've heard GOPers do this for 6 years and it's still child's play. To see men acting like 5 year olds is embarrassing, but that's the modern GOP.

Despite your apparent disdain for my voting preferences, yup, those are the guys!
Pat Robertson has also called for the assasination of Hugo Chavez in order to save lives. Since someone else brought up the greatness of Harry Truman, I will follow with this: Robertson is kind of like Harry Truman calling for the destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in order to save lives. Speak your mind, follow through, no grey areas. The difference is that Harry Truman actually had the power to follow through.
James "Bo" Gritz also called for an end to the control of the two-party political system here in the United States, which some think of as "two heads of the same snake". I wonder if ace was old enough to vote for Gritz back in '92?
Patrick Buchanan has also shown himself to be against the war in Iraq, and against U.S. interventionism around the world. Yet you only state a quote of his about Adolph Hitler. A quote which is absolutely true, by the way. In spite of Hitler's evil, he was a fascinating character in what he was able to accomplish during his lifetime. Who knows how far Hitler could have gone in destroying European nations and rebuilding them in his image had it not been for the United States' "interventionism".
Unlike many of you, I can disagree with points in someone's philosophy without hating the person, or disregarding their entire philosophy as a whole.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:23 pmAll this talk about Gonzalez lying, but the House has taken impeachment off the table. How do they propose to enforce this? This is a waste of time. A better approach would be to work with the State AGs, encouraging them to enforce arrest warrants against the President, VP, and Members of Congress.
These are offenses not against the United States, but We the People and the States: Thus, the President has no power to issue a pardon for the the final sentence.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:56 pmI heard the exchange on NPR this morning and do not remember him saying "It was not". Is there a link to an audio or video of the exchange? I can't see youtube here.
July 26th, 2007 at 1:51 pmPutting aside AG lying for the moment: The DNC and GOP have both been briefed since 2001; had the chance to review the surveillance; and despite "concern" either didn't block funding; or they failed to ask questions. They had the duty to document their concerns and forward "concerns" with illegalities to the US Atty.
What's happened since 2001? Look at page 2 of 4: Pelosi's name is all over the briefing list: She didn't need "subpoena power" to get anything: She's known all along; or knew that her questions were not getting answered, but she continued to rubber stamp. Despite all that, she's taken impeachment off the table: To ensure her knowledge of the illegal activity doesn't get raised. This is a 5 USC 3331 issue: She the DNC and GOP appear to have jointly not asserted their oaths since 2001. No other reasonable conclusion.
Time to get the State AGs to issue indictments against her, Conyers, DNC-GOP Members of Congress, President, VP, and others complicit with this illegal activity. Likely attaches to war crimes, legal counsel, and civilians involved with illegal activity.

Yikes!!! You admire Hitler!!! ....................Not good.
Hitler embarked on a war of aggression, not unlike Bush. Driven by his delusion that he was on God's mission.
Fortunately, genocide isn't (or doesn't at this point appear to be) on dub'ya's mind.
GWB started this disaster based on his desire to rectify what he perceived to be his father's failure. He appealed to greed, his own and that of his buds, as well as his utter faith in the ignorance of the American people, to get the thumbs up. This was not a war to stop a genocide, it was a war to settle a beef. Not yours. Not mine. Not the thousands of soldiers who sacrificed their lives. For his.
