Norquist’s Advice For Bush On Iraq: Make Groups Like MoveOn Look ‘More Extreme’»

Next week, Grover Norquist — head of Americans for Tax Reform and Abramoff crony — will meet with Karl Rove about the administration’s Iraq policies. In an interview with The Hill, Norquist says that he will tell Rove to change President Bush’s rhetoric:

“The one-paragraph explanation of what we’re doing in Iraq has to have the word ‘leaving’ in there,” said Grover Norquist, a conservative leader and the head of Americans for Tax Reform. “If Bush would move to ‘leaving,’ then other people, including the MoveOn.org people and the [Democrats], move to a more extreme position than you have, because they have put themselves in the anti-Bush position.”

Norquist…said Bush should reject a timeline and instead emphasize that he expects “fewer” troops in the region. If the administration changes nothing, it will allow Democrats to charge that the strategy isn’t working, which resonates with the public, added Norquist.

Bush has already tried emphasizing “fewer” troops. In his July 4 speech, Bush said that “we all long for the day when there are far fewer American servicemen and women in Iraq.” But he quickly added that withdrawing U.S. troops “prematurely” would “not be in our national interest.” In 2005, he said that he foresaw “fewer American troops” serving in Iraq in the next year; instead, he added more troops.

The American public wants more than rhetoric on Iraq. According to a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll, 55 percent of the American public supports “legislation that would set a deadline for withdrawing U.S. combat forces from Iraq by next spring.” Bush has already vetoed such legislation, and has promised to veto even a symbolic timeline of withdrawal.

All the spin in the world won’t make any difference unless Bush supports legislation with a timeline for redeployment.

Grover on Sesame Street has more on the ball than Nordquist.

“The one-paragraph explanation of what we’re doing in Iraq has to have the words ‘stealing their oil’ in there,”

    There, that’s more realistic.

Wingnut and lugnut logic from Grover

  6. American Idiot Says:

“[Other groups would have to] move to a more extreme position than you have, because they have put themselves in the anti-Bush position.”

Ah yes, because it’s not like we were against the Iraq war for sound reasons that turned out to be correct, or anything like that. No, we just wanted to disagree with Bush for the fun of it!

Brilliant strategy, Grover. I bet it plays well on Sesame Street.

  7. RUCerious Says:

Grover ought to be advising Bush to keep looking under the table for the missing WMDs.

  8. Jay Randal Says:

Grover is a Neocon criminal who should be put under arrest.

  12. Parrotlover77 Says:

You know that CarFax commercial with the car that’s been burned to a crisp and the ad first says “this car has minor fire damage” then he backspaces it and it says “this car is SMOKING!”

    That’s how I see neocon speech writers…

“Iraq is a tinderbox about ready to blow-up since we invaded” backspace-backspace… “Democracy is EXPLODING in Iraq!”

  13. WaltinTexas Says:

With these fascist right-wingers, it’s all about fooling and misleading people for votes in order to stay in position to route tax dollars to their industry friends.

  14. American Idiot Says:

By Grover’s logic, if Bush calls for immediate withdrawal, the liberals will reflexively take the opposite position and demand our troops stay. If Bush says he screwed up, liberals will say he’s doing a heckuva job just so they can disagree with Bush.

I think I saw that episode of Sesame street where Grover played the opposite game with Snufalufagus.

  15. JG Says:

Moveon.org is already extreme. One of their internet ads compared Bush to Hitler.

    And your point……?

  16. American Says:

It’s disgusting that Norquist is worrying about perception and strategies against Democrats and “MoveOn.org” instead of ending this war and bringing home the troops. The war these guys seem is between them and the Democrats, not Iraq.

  17. ThoughtcrimeRising Says:

Most Americans probably think an “extreme” hardship is not being able to find their usual brand of useless junk and having to “suffer” with an alternative. Those of us who are intellectually capable of understanding what this country has become are already resigned to its fate. If you want any freedom at all, get out of here before the next domestically-orchestrated attack. I did say domestic. Our “leaders” are killing us and telling us it’s for our own safety. Either run, prepare to fight, or just go shopping you goddamn sheeple.

  18. plural Says:

Yeah, you go ahead and work on slogans and talking points. I’m sure the american fighting soldier and marine will fully understand your inaction due to the dire need to come up with better buzz words.

This man really doesn’t get that he doesn’t get it.

  20. ∞Ω Says:

It’s for the same reason that Bill O. ALWAYS uses the term ‘the far left’; it gives the impression that the NeoCons are in the center.

  21. Arne Langsetmo Says:

Norquist couldn’t reason his way out of a paper bag with a Zippi and sme kerosene.

Why he assumes that MoveOn will be forced to pick some position just because it is “not Bush” is beyond me.

Why he thinks that Dubya will co-opt a MoveOn position — rather than bull-headedly continuing his own sorry path just because it is his own sorry path and no one else is going to tell him what to do — is also beyond me.

Norquist has the “knee-jerk” strategists mixed up here.

    Cheers,

  22. veritas Says:

Nordquest’s rep will preceed him and no one will put any credence on what this nut says. RUcerious in Post #1 said it all!

Besides, now a majority of americans KNOW who the extremists are and they’re the fascists sitting in Washington, DC. The collective consciousness of the american people is more in line with MoveOn.org these days.

  23. veritas Says:

Trolls come here and say things like far leftist and liberals like they were synonims.

I think they should get a plane, travel around the world, talk to other people and then get back and get a clue about how far was that left. They will be shocked.

  28. VerbalKint Says:

These Neocon fascists just don’t get it. They think that they can control everything so long as they control the message.

I look forward to the day that Norquist dons prison garb and steps behind the big wall for a few years.

I expect a titanic struggle to emerge within the GOP when their permanent minority status becomes apparent to them after the next election. Someone is going to pay for the ruin of the party, and you can bet that goons like Rove and Norquist are going to top the charts when the bloodletting begins.

  29. veritas Says:

Since this group of thugs is all about “smoke and mirrors” - appearances and perceptions they haven’t a clue as to how the real world works. They’re continuing to make absolute fools of themselves every day. It’s downright embarrassing to watch them crap all over themselves.

He is also a liar and a fearmonger.

It’s not really an exercise of my mind. He challenges my mind very little. It’s really more a test of my ability to tolerate a narrow-minded bigot who has the absolute right to be as offensive as he pleases.

    Comment by Arne Langsetmo — July 25, 2007 @ 12:25 pm

Arne, forgive me truncating your good post, but I think the reason Grover thinks that MoveOn would adopt a position just because it is “not Bush” is actually two reasons:

    1. that’s the way they think: either “A” or “B” but never “AB”, BA” or any possibliity involving any other letters,

    and

    2. because they have no respect for dissenting viewpoints. They can’t conceive of opposition as actually being grounded in reason and conviction that comes from a different perspective. If someone disagrees with Bush, it’s because they suffer from “Bush Derangement Syndrome” and not because they see deep, deep flaws in the President’s policy and decision-making.

    Comment by The Eck — July 25, 2007 @ 12:09 pm

Easily compared, and this does not include the classic defintion of fascism by William Todd

“Fascism is on the march today in America. Millionaires are marching to the tune. It will come in this country unless a strong defense is set up by all liberal and progressive forces… A clique of U.S. industrialists is hell-bent to bring a fascist state to supplant our democratic government, and is working closely with the fascist regime in Germany and Italy. Aboard ship a prominent executive of one of America’s largest financial corporations told me point blank that if the progressive trend of the Roosevelt administration continued, he would be ready to take definite action to bring fascism to America.”

former U.S. ambassador to Germany William Dodd in 1938

    1. Invoke a terrifying internal and external enemy.

    2. Create a gulag.

    3. Develop a thug caste.

    4. Set up an internal surveillance system.

    5. Harass citizens’ groups.

    6. Engage in arbitrary detention and release.

    7. Target key individuals.

    8. Control the press.

    9. Dissent equals treason.

    10. Suspend the rule of law.

So, it’s an accurate comparison and one that is becoming more and more apparent as time goes on.

I am constantly amazed at how the Republicans seem to think that they can accomplish anything they want through “advertising”. They believe that if you tell a lie enough times, somewhere along the line it becomes truth to people. The problem is, Bush has worn out his lies. He’s the classic case of the “Boy who cried wolf” and now no one believes anything he says.

Yes I did, New York City not too long ago. They burned a flag though, not a falg.

    Ever seen a false-flag burning?

    I have. I’ve also seen a false-falg burning.

  94. mikey r Says:

What’s the matter, Mr. Pee? Not enouugh mean libs are talking to you? You have to create another reality-challenged screen name to “converse” with?

Sad, son, very sad. Not that you ever had a lot of promise, but it’s still sad.

I would be interested in the specifics but not from antisemites.

  96. John Gilpins Says:

    RagingGurrl,

Thanks so much for Bush’s A-S-S-trological sign.

George W. Bush is one Cancer that pulls into a S-H-E-L-L Service Station at the first sign of trouble. How can you blame the guy? Shell Oil is about his only friend left.

A-S-S-trological? Bush is an ass who’s not L-O-G-I-C-A-L. Gee, maybe this astrological stuff is making sense!

  97. nofltwlt Says:

So, Grover is insincere and he strives to make our little woodenhead president Pinocchio appear insincere too. Grover hates Bush!

  98. troll alert Says:

    TROLL ALERT! TROLL ALERT!

LibTeenie = Thrasymachos = Mr. President

  99. Leporello Says:

Back on thread, Mr. Norquist’s ideas remind me of Hitler during his last days. He’s making plans that can’t possibly change anything. He’s rejecting our reality and substituting his own. He’s harbouring the belief that this administratrion will rise like the phoenix from its ashes and fly forth in splendor. Its a really pretty fantasy, but its still a fantasy. Unfortunately, no matter how much they don’t want it to happen, reality is gonna bite this administration in the ass. Its easy to make excuses. Its hard to face reality

We all know that and the best thing is to just ignore it and it will slither back into the basement if it gets no attention.

Now if we could only have another “bunker bash” like Adolf and Ava had, things might improve!

  103. Arne Langsetmo Says:

    #35 spit take:

Arne, forgive me truncating your good post, but I think the reason Grover thinks that MoveOn would adopt a position just because it is “not Bush” is actually two reasons….

You’re quite right. I was simply pointing out that Norquist is an eedjit in thinking so. Thank goodness…

    Cheers,

  104. John Gilpins Says:

    upside00,

I think Grover is a very confused guy in many areas of his life.

I think Ted, Mark, and Grover should take vacations together. You know, fly to cities featuring the hottest GIRLS at the hottest strip clubs.

They could all have a gay old time.

  105. LividLib Says:

“All the spin in the world won’t make any difference unless Bush supports legislation with a timeline for redeployment.”

I wish that were true. The sad fact is that it DOES make a difference because the typical american voter is misinformed and gullible. These tactics worked like a charm in 2000 and in 2004. Also, look at the polls immediately after bush addresses/spins the nation. His approval rating increases despite regurgitating the same old crap. There are millions of simpletons out there that take this shit seriously.

    Sad, but true.

  106. Arne Langsetmo Says:

    #58 Paul:

    upside00. Well, twice….

Twice too often. We know where to go looking for the piece’o’shit when we smell the stink.

… But, I thought this place could use it. You sound open-minded. Did you tune in?

I’ve tuned in quite often, thank you. You’re an eedjit for suggesting that we’re unaware of what droppings of wisdom are left behind by His Emanence Rush.

One such dropping was his insistance that because one study gave an answer of 63 (just representative numbers; can’t remember the actual one OTTOMH) and then another using different methodology gave a number of 37, that the actual number is thus 0. But then again, His Emanence is a drop-out, and hardly even a novitiate ikn the methods or science or statistics.

But, sad to say, there are so many piles of scat that His Emanence leaves, it’s hard to pick which ones to avoid sometimes.

Now go infest someplace that is more on your intellectual level.

    Cheers,

  107. BlueArkansas Says:

Herein lies a fundamental flaw in this abominable administration. Bush and his ilk, including unlovable, furry ol’ Grover, neither embrace nor understand leadership—they know only salesmanship, and poorly. Regrettably, I find this all too appropriate for a society saturated by perpetual corporate advertising and beholden to material gain. Please welcome George W. Bush, the Marketer-in-Chief.

    #105 Comment by John Gilpins

Yea, he and Jack Abramoff and PudgeBoy Rover were all in the Young Repugs in college. I can only imagine the “fun” that trio must have had!! YECHHH!!

  109. RUCerious Says:

Completely OT, but wasn’t Nordquist OJ’s character on Naked Gun??

  110. War4Sale Says:

Grover’s wrong. There’s only one way for Bush to resonate with the public at this point:

He needs to hold a press conference and announce, “Even I hate me” and begin kicking his own ass on camera.

They could brodcast it on pay per view and use the proceeds to pay off the national debt!

  111. John Gilpins Says:

    upside00,

I really don’t know how much fun they had.

Power is their main motivation in life and you don’t become powerful without stepping on a few toes along the way. They play in the big leagues and it gets pretty rough at times.

  112. cosmosis Says:

You mean he’s not going to tell Chimp to drown Iraq in a bathtub?

  113. Shawn Says:

Why isn’t Grover (and Gale Norton) in jail, yet?

  114. NeoCONS 'R' SCUM Says:

this piece of shit should be in federal prison doing time for laundering Abramoff’s ill- gotten millions, with his boyfriend Ralph Reed, not blathering to other scum and giving chimpy and KKKarl rove advice.
BUT, I think a bare majority of the public has begun to realize how full of it they are.
    maybe,…………..

  115. marcus robinson Says:

This guy is a piece of CRAP!!! Another right-wing pig spewing his garbage. How in the hell can these scumbags get sooooooooooooooooooo much face time in the “LIBERAL MEDIA”?????????

  116. Larry from C Says:

“The one-paragraph explanation of what we’re doing in Iraq has to have the word ‘leaving’ in there,” said Grover Norquist…

Grover, please, take your own advice and just LEAVE my country.

  117. Larry from C Says:

A few words for Grover to look up:

    (a) Sociopath
    (b) karma
    (c) empathy
    (d) soul
    (e) conscience

  118. Quizmos Says:

Grover plays with linguistics while the killing and maiming continues in Iraq. He at once hates government even as he counts on it for continued profit.

  119. Eric Arthur Blair Says:

With these fascist right-wingers, it’s all about fooling and misleading people for votes in order to stay in position to route tax dollars to their industry friends.

    Comment by WaltinTexas — July 25, 2007 @ 12:16 pm

    Fooling and misleading people?

You mean like, for example, demanding increased spending and calling it “investment” in order to re-route tax dollars to the bloodsucking base of the Democrat party–the trial loyahs, unions and welfare recipients?

Or relabeling your failed, despised, regressive political philosophy “progressive?”

Or trying to ram through your unpopular, unwanted socialist agenda by playing up mostly phony issues, like global warming, the uninsured, and racism?

As for fascism, only one party uses the force of government to silence political opponents, take citizens’ property, restrict their use of guns and administer race-based benefits. And only one party idolizes dictators, murderers, cop killers and deviants of all kinds.

  120. Larry from C Says:

#199 Quiz…He only wants to drown the social government programs, the New Deal Programs. Because those are bad! He doesn’t want to drown the Military Industrial Complex. Its good!

  121. Gregor Samsa Says:

What to do when confronted with a stubborn problem that will just not to away? Worse still, the problem also happens to be self-inflicted.

Do you look for new ideas? Change your course of action? Call for a meeting to brainstorm potential solutions?

    Of course not!

Bury your head in the sand, change the wording to describe the issue, pretend you actually have found a solution and that the situation is improving. When confronted with facts, deny, deny, deny.

Genius -absolute genius I tell ya!

  122. JP Says:

Leave it to Bathtub Norquist to think you can win a rhetorical battle involving NOT leaving Iraq by masking it in language that suggests you are.

  123. Lora Says:

Just like you body, your mind needs exercise, too.
Rush is on from 12-3pm est. Here’s a link to listen live:

    comment by Paul

I can’t think of many people who need physical exercise as well as a drug-free mind more than Rush.

  124. Powkat Says:

Why isn’t Grover in jail? He was extorting money from Abranmoff and I’m guessing even a cursory examination of his books would reveal all kinds of dirty deals.

  125. pimothy Says:

Regarding the comparison of Bush to Hitler, someone said that Hitler was a Great Speaker.
