The Senate passed legislation today to overhaul military health care and increase troop pay by 3.5 percent for members of the military. The pay raise would take effect at the beginning of 2008.
Read Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) statement:
I remain deeply disappointed in some of the conditions I saw earlier this year at Walter Reed Medical Center — just one deficiency among many across our veterans’ health care system — and I am proud that the Senate today has passed the Wounded Warriors Act to address those problems. It is our duty to ensure our courageous service-members do not fall through the cracks when they need that care the most.
This bill will improve the substandard facilities like those at Walter Reed, expand medical care for veterans, bridge gaps between the Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs, and resolve inadequate severance pay. And despite the President’s objection, we are also giving our troops a well-deserved pay raise. Since taking over the majority, Democrats have provided billions of dollars to help our veterans because Americans willing to pay the ultimate price for our nation should receive the care they deserve, from enlistment to retirement and beyond.
go ahead preznit – veto that.

July 25th, 2007 at 7:42 pmLefty, you seem to care about the troops. Do you think soldiers who have been in combat deserve a little rest between stints of combat duty? Democrats do, and tried to pass a bill mandating that combat troops get enough rest between tours of duty. Republicans obstructed the bill and Bush promised to VETO it if it got through congress. I guess I’m just wondering how long people like you can hold on to this conservative meme that Democrats don’t support the troops and Repubs do.

Democrats have an obligation to do big things for the troops if they want power, given their history of spitting on them constantly. There are remedies that they’re expected to make. It only seems that they ’suddenly’ care about the welfare of the troops when we have a president in office who tends to be a lax communicator and can’t get his position straight.

I couldn’t agree more. The genie was roaring in the bottle for decades. Something let the genie of sectarianism out of that bottle – let’s be intellectually honest that was the invasion.
We broke Iraq so how do we fix it?

Funny, for a c**t who says my posts are a “pretty easy skip”, Lefty C**T Scan seems to reply to an awful lot of them.
Every one, in fact. Doesn’t sound like it’s skipping very many.
But then just ’cause something’s easy doesn’t mean Lefty C**T Scan is capable of it.
Poor, silly little C**T.

How many Republicans have proposed a 10% pay raise for U.S. military personnel?

The bill is a great idea, but it was also criticized as political tactic by democrats to slow-bleed the troops out of Iraq. If a widespread bill can’t be passed, the individual services should issue their orders in more creative ways that give their troops at least 6 months of rest between each deployment.

The WH should start by sending the Generals to the Iraqi parliament to let them know directly that a military hang-around isn’t going to solve the problem in Iraq. The generals will needs to give a wake up call to the political entities of Iraq to stop being so comfortable of our military presence there. Constant squabbling between Congress and the WH isn’t working very much, so I would suggest less civilian control of the military.
Maybe then will the Iraqi parliament get the show going. I feel that the lack of political cooperation (Iraqi) with U.S. forces is the leading impediment.

No, silly naive Bushbot, we always understood that this war would have this eventual outcome. We never doubted we’d “win” the tactical war, just that we could never “win” the peace. Show me any occupying army that has 70% of the population who hates their presence who “wins” in the longterm. Some of us learned from our VietNam debacle, others like you obviously didn’t. You chose to believe the Alpha-Monkeys in charge. That makes you a Beta-Monkey.

I have to disagree. The issue isn’t the Iraqi parliament – any Government body wants stability as it validates their existence. The issue is that Iraq has turned into an area where sectarian violence has been able to flourish. Iraq has now become a place where ancient rivalries are being played out.
We can’t stop this. It’s 4 years old now.

Comment by UKBristolDave — July 25, 2007 @ 7:47 pm
We can’t. We can signal our decision to exit Iraq (just like we did in VietNam) and leave. Then, when the smoke clears the people of Iraq will determine their future….they will either overcome their ethnic-religious differences to reformulate their own government (probably not based on the pipedreams of a bunch of Washington, DC Republican ideologues who can’t run our country, never mind Iraq) or break down into proxy-states controlled by Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Kurdistan. Maybe then, we can start to help finance the reconstruction of the area, by actually employing the locals to fix what we broke.

July 25th, 2007 at 8:20 pmGoing once, twice, three times. And now I get to answer for you. No Republican has proposed a 10% pay raise for our troops. Perhaps they don’t care.
July 25th, 2007 at 8:23 pmLefty: “The bill is a great idea, but it was also criticized as political tactic by democrats to slow-bleed the troops out of Iraq.”
Well, that was the administration’s talking point, but I don’t believe anything they say anymore. Why would anyone believe anything they say?
July 25th, 2007 at 10:18 pmThe first thing that happens when we leave is the Iraqis get rid of al Qaeda. Most of them are Sunnis from Saudi Arabia and the Shiites now running Iraq want nothing to do with them.

What program is this? And are they paying $450 to each new refugee from any country, or certain particular ones? Got a link?
July 26th, 2007 at 12:09 amIf anyone has paid attention to who has voted for what in the House or Senate for the past thirty years (or which president has been for or against proposals) it is very obvious that Democrats and liberals are in favor of increased pay and benefits for our troops and Republicans and conservatives are opposed.
I remember Clinton always being in favor of increased pay and benefits for the lower ranks at least. And he took us from record deficits to record surpluses.
If the Pentagon gets $600 billion per year and the lower ranks are not paid enough, then the problem is priorites within the Pentagon.

July 26th, 2007 at 12:27 amWe could save $200 billion each year by cutting back on corporate welfare.
We could save $250 billion each year by switching to single-payer healthcare.
We could eliminate a few unwanted jet, bomber, and carrier programs.
We could have fewer generals.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:30 am> The bill is a great idea, but it was also criticized as political tactic

Ah yes, the old “don’t fight wars of choice unless you can do so without breaking your military” tactic.. clever dems… Funny that you, who claim to support the troops (BTW, how many repubs supported the 10 pct troop raise your hollering about?), prefer the “fast bleed” of having our troops stay in Iraq to help them build a prosperous islamic theocracy with ties to Iran…
You know, that little part in the iraqi constitution that says that no law of the iraqi government will contradict islam..is that what you think our troops should be dying for?
You know, I never really beleived the people who claim that there are paid trolls on here, but the more I read threads, it really does seem as if there is always one, or maybe two, paid putz’s out there always trying to disrupt things. Only the threads with the most indefensible subjects (such as republicans chastising other republicans) are troll free… it almost does seem as if some jack@ss is literally on duty around here….
In any case, its nice watching these inbred flaghumping douchebags have a meltdown..your empire is on fire…
