Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) warned Gonzales yesterday: “My suggestion to you is you review your testimony to find out if your credibility has been breached to the point of being actionable,” Specter said. Time reports, “The maximum penalty for being caught lying to Congress is five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 per count. Specter wryly noted to reporters during a break that there is a jail in the Capitol complex.”

Can the jail hold 3 people? Harriet, Josh and Alberto.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:10 amThere is no suggest! Either imprison, or imprison not!
July 25th, 2007 at 11:11 amCan we put them all in there? : Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rove, Hadley, Powell, Rice, Wolfowitz, etc etc.?
July 25th, 2007 at 11:11 amThey ALL should be in jail!
July 25th, 2007 at 11:13 amtoo bad its already full–full of republicans! ;)
July 25th, 2007 at 11:14 amCan we put them all in there with Big Bubba?
July 25th, 2007 at 11:14 amBush is going to have to print up form pardons. Just fill in the name and sign away.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:15 amis Cheney in charge of the torture at the Capitol complex?
July 25th, 2007 at 11:16 amMuch as I’d love to see Fredo in jail, I have to ask one simple question. Who’s going to bring charges against the attourney general? Congress has, for whatever reasons, totally abandoned its oversight functions. If a miracle happens and they try to bring charges, does anybody think that DOJ will actually bring charges? The AG will say, sorry, executive privelege, or that bringing charges helps the terrorists or they’ll just forget about it. If congress wakes up and tries to save the constitution and restore rule of law, that would be a major miracle. If DOJ actually brings charges, I’d expect the second coming would be right around the corner. Congress is dealing with Bushco. Its their ball, its their field and they make up the rules. Goodbye Republic. Hello empire.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:17 amthat there is a jail in the Capitol complex.â€
So put it to good use ~ INHERENT CONTEMPT!!!
July 25th, 2007 at 11:19 amAmerican government is supposed to be based on recognition of INHERENT rights of its people, which requires INHERENT respect for the law by its elected and appointed officials and INHERENT truthfulness. Violations by lying to Congress when it is trying to insure those rights for Americans should result in INHERENT CONTEMPT charges, especially when the official is part of the Justice Department.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:25 am#9 An independent special prosecutor will have to be appointed. that’s the only way i think
July 25th, 2007 at 11:26 amINHERENT CONTEMPT.
it’s that simple…
July 25th, 2007 at 11:28 amwhich could explain the hesitation…
…
Personally I think a public display like a stocks would be best for him and the other criminals. Let people pelt them with fruit.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:28 amMy message to COngress:
July 25th, 2007 at 11:31 amPlease stop talking about it and DO SOMETHING!
I think most of the above comments are INHERENTLY correct.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:32 am“your credibility has been breached”??? “actionable”??
So it’s not lying… it’s being caught.
Lying to congress (or to the people for that matter) should be grounds for immediately losing your office, never mind going to jail.
When Gonzo says that his testimony answers a question and he doesn’t even know what the testimony is. He’s either lying, or he’s a moron. In either case, we do NOT want him to head the Justice Department.
Why are they even talking about this? Contempt hell.. Throw him out THEN decide if he needs to be in jail. There is nothing ambiguous in his testimony. He said he knows that what he did was legal, but he can’t remember what he did, who he talked to or what they talked about. This should not promote discussion or controversy. This should promote ACTION.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:33 amDare to dream.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:34 amAs I said before… Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes?
July 25th, 2007 at 11:37 am“Wryly” or not they wont do anything about Gitmo Al, and even if they did Bush would pardon or commute so whats the point? Nothing will happen until the Chimp and Cheney are out of office.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:43 amBush can’t commute or pardon inherent contempt. Gonzo would have to sit out the rest of this congressional term, and see daylight in January 2009. What a beautiful thought.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:46 amThen Valerie Plame should be jailed for lying to Congress. As should President Clinton have been jailed.
Pathetic Think Progress. You need help.
July 25th, 2007 at 11:58 amQuis custodiet ipsos custodes? is a Latin phrase from the Roman poet Juvenal, variously translated as “Who will guard the guards? …

July 25th, 2007 at 12:08 pm>Then Valerie Plame should be jailed for lying to Congress.
Uhm, except she didnt. If you’re referring to her statement that she was covert, it was confirmed by one of her former bosses.
> As should President Clinton have been jailed.
He testified in front of congress when and lied about what when he did so?
July 25th, 2007 at 12:17 pmThanks Ben Dover. Now go outside and kick a puppy.
July 25th, 2007 at 12:22 pmValerie Plame didn’t lie to congress. The Senate exonerated Clinton. He went through the process and prevailed. Bush is a chickensh*t who doesn’t have the balls to face a Grand Jury or even take an oath.
God help us, you’re lying right now! You might want to lock yourself up. Go on now, shoo, and throw away the key. Good girl.
July 25th, 2007 at 12:30 pmBush: Ha!

How about putting just one more neocon lying post with these two. Then, we’d have The Three Neocon Stooges. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.
July 25th, 2007 at 1:21 pmPLC - stfu. You are an oxymoron. Speaking of jail, I think treason is a crime. Since TP posters commit treason on a daily basis and give the enemy aid and comfort, you should be jailed.
July 25th, 2007 at 1:25 pmGod’s Anus,
What you don’t understand is that you are the enemy. I wouldn’t give you aid or comfort. Bush’s satanic administration has done more to harm my country than any Muslim extremist, and you sycophantic whores are enablers of that damage,
So you can STFU God’s Anus.
July 25th, 2007 at 1:39 pmWhen even fellow Republicans suggest you should be in jail, it’s time to draft that resignation letter!

No, thank you. Thank you, that’s a compliment coming from you. True. No they don’t, so they shouldn’t.
July 25th, 2007 at 2:28 pm>Since TP posters commit treason on a daily basis
every heard of the 1st amendment, my brother in rectal rectitutude?
>and give the enemy aid and comfort, you should be jailed.
so this is your expert legal opinion, right?
tell me genius, does forcing our troops to get body armor from bake sales while giving the ultra rich tax breaks give aid and comfort to “the enemy”… (whose the enemy, anyway? sunni insurgents or the shia death squads?”?)
if I were “the enemy”, id be given lots of comfort by Dumbya sending our troops into battle with hillbilly armor and 2nd hand body armor….
July 25th, 2007 at 2:33 pmSpector was talking plenty tough yesterday, but where was his vote in support of Contempt??
July 25th, 2007 at 2:39 pmToo bad Specter isn’t serious about lying to the Senate; but we knew he really doesn’t care as long as it’s one of his boys.
July 25th, 2007 at 2:57 pmRecommend disbarment proceedings begin at once! And R.I.C.O.
July 25th, 2007 at 3:12 pmGod help us sez:
How entertaining…yet another troll who clearly fails to comprehend Article III, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution.
July 25th, 2007 at 3:13 pmIs anyone else tired of “Magic Bullet” Spector talking tough only to cave into his masters later?
July 25th, 2007 at 6:27 pmComment by Cheney’s Ass — July 25, 2007 @ 6:27 pm
I, for one, am tired of it. I think the last time Specter put his vote where his mouth was was when he both grilled and voted against Reagan’s failed Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork. It’s all been downhill since then.
