Intelligence Official Contradicts Bush: ‘Primary’ Terrorist Threat Is From ‘South Asia,’ Not Iraq»

On Tuesday, President Bush delivered an address claiming that al Qaeda in Iraq is the central terror threat to the United States:

Here’s the bottom line: Al Qaida in Iraq is run by foreign leaders loyal to Osama bin Laden. … We are fighting bin Laden’s al Qaida in Iraq; Iraq is central to the war on terror; and against this enemy, America can accept nothing less than complete victory.

Top U.S. intelligence officials testifying before the House yesterday explained that Bush’s monolithic conception of al Qaeda does not represent their views. As NPR reported, “none of the officials testifying would put it quite the way President Bush has.”

In rare testimony, Edward Gistaro, “a principal author” of the recent National Intelligence Estimate, said the “primary concern” today comes from Afghanistan and Pakistan.

CRAMER: So then, if, as the NIE reflects, we are concerned about a threat to the homeland here, who calls that shot from al Qaeda?

GISTARO: Primary concern is al Qaeda in South Asia, organizing its own plots against the United States.

Watch it:

Rep. Bud Cramer (D-AL) pressed Gistaro to parse out the connections between al Qaeda in Iraq and al Qaeda in Afghanistan, a subject of extensive public interest in recent weeks. While Gistaro acknowledged that “al Qaeda n Iraq is an affiliate organization to al Qaeda in South Asia,” he asserted that “we’re dealing with an Al Qaida that has a decentralized command-and-control structure. And I don’t want to leave a false impression that we’re talking about a monolithic organization.”

Spencer Ackerman has more.

Digg It!

Transcript:

CRAMER: So, based on what I’ve heard so far, are you saying that al Qaeda and al Qaeda in Iraq are one and the same organization?

GISTARO: Sir, the way the relationship is described in the NIE is that al Qaeda in Iraq is an affiliate organization to al Qaeda in South Asia.

CRAMER: So — let me help you with that. Then the answer to that is, yes, they’re basically one and the same organization?

GISTARO: Sir, I think, you know, as the president described yesterday, we’re dealing with an Al Qaida that has a decentralized command-and-control structure. And I don’t want to leave a false impression that we’re talking about a monolithic organization.

CRAMER: So then, if, as the NIE reflects, we are concerned about a threat to the homeland here, who calls that shot from al Qaeda?

GISTARO: Primary concern is Al Qaida in South Asia, organizing its own plots against the United States. What we’re concerned about is that AQI, as the most visible and capable affiliate of Al Qaida, has also expressed an interest in attacking inside the United States.

  3. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Uh-oh….looks like Gistaro didn’t get the memo with the updated talking points.

Remember, guys…you need to keep your fearmongering bullshit consistent if you’re going to fool anyone.

    Pizza the Hutt sez:

Mr. Bin Laden (Democrat-SA) thanks you for being willing to ignore the presence of his outfit in Iraq.

I think you got that party affiliation wrong….bin Laden has done more for Chimpy & Co than anyone else.

By the way, how’s that manhunt coming along?

  5. Serenity Now Says:

I hope I live to see the day when people in this country actually start calling it the United States again instead of the Conservative propaganda title “Homeland”. This isn’t Germany, or Russia.

  6. stopthecons Says:

this whole al qaeda boogey man thing is just nonsene to me. I’m not afraid of being killed by terrorists. I’m more afraid of getting on the freeway this afternoon!

But, Bush and his cronies play on this whole fear thing over and over…and over…and over.

Terrorists will never, ever destroy this country or our way of life. It’s not possible. period.

The only way this country will be destroyed is from within - from politicians like Bush who love their own power more than they love your liberty.

So, how do you think they are going to smear this guy? I’m betting they’re going to say he has a history of depression and a problem with authority. Also, he once gave $5 to a Democrat running for mayor in 1977, so his partisanship caused Bush Derangement Syndrome.

Why are the neocolons afraid of a couple thousand foreign fighters in Iraq?

Then why do you think that we should give our port security over to Dubai, one of the countries sited in the 9/11 Commission’s Report as funding the 9/11 attacks? And a follow question. Why do you feel it is okay for Haliburton to move to this same al Qaida supporting country?

This is interesting to not because SE Asia is one of the poorest places in the world where every 3.6 seconds, another person dies of starvation [Borgen Project]. 78% of Americans and the great Corporate Leaders of America agree that solving terrorism would be by solving global poverty so what is the United States waiting for?

The bloodiest Oil President ever needed a better war song to get his oily loot. There is nothing in Southern Asia except Harsish & Poppies and a tyrant sitting on real nukes (not like the idiotic Saddam Hussein who would hate himself in his grave for not getting the nukes in time. I mean, the idiot only got Ancient Toys of Mass Desruption).
Bush, Cheney & Co are talking the real oil which is in Saudi, (a country long enslaved by us), Iraq (a place where we are not doing so bad ((the pumps are gulping millions of barrels daily, if not billions…and with the rate we are doing we could suck their entire reserve dry before the end of 2010, and trust the successors to keep the good work on)) )…and maybe probably Iran (but I am sure we could leave Iran alone….the entire 2006 profit posting of Haliburton alone is x10 the entire total capital income of Iran)….I think the pig are well fattened for now, and kinda pleased….everything is as it should be.
So, I would tell y’all to shut the f**K up. Those boys getting killed in Iraq are not dying in vain. Atleast, they did the fat ceos’ of the big oil companies great benefit and pride!

  31. funky p Says:

I just posted this on another thread but it bears repeating:
Authoritarian Aggression. When I say authoritarian followers are aggressive
I don’t mean they stride into bars and start fights. First of all, high RWAs go to church
enormously more often than they go to bars. Secondly, they usually avoid anything
approaching a fair fight. Instead they aggress when they believe right and might are
on their side. “Right” for them means, more than anything else, that their hostility is
(in their minds) endorsed by established authority, or supports such authority. “Might”
means they have a huge physical advantage over their target, in weaponry say, or in
numbers, as in a lynch mob. It’s striking how often authoritarian aggression happens
in dark and cowardly ways, in the dark, by cowards who later will do everything they
possibly can to avoid responsibility for what they did. Women, children, and others
unable to defend themselves are typical victims. Even more striking, the attackers
typically feel morally superior to the people they are assaulting in an unfair fight. We
shall see research evidence in the next chapter that this self-righteousness plays a huge
    role in high RWAs’ hostility.

Denmark pulls out Iraq troops early

COPENHAGEN. Denmark has withdrawn most of the 430 troops it has stationed in Iraq earlier than expected, a report said Wednesday quoting the Danish military.
The battalion, stationed in the southern city of Basra since 2003, under British command, was supposed to begin pulling out its soldiers on August 10.
But, according to a report by the Iraqi correspondent of the Danish TV channel TV2, sustained attacks by insurgents have led to most of them heading home early.
Danish military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Jes Rasmussen denied that the early withdrawal was due to security reasons.
“We have found a way of packing our bags more quickly than expected and the soldiers have worked hard for that,” he told TV2.
More than 250 Danish soldiers had travelled to Kuwait en route back to Denmark, it was reported. Another 150 soldiers were expected to leave Basra soon on a date that could not be given for security reasons.
Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen announced in February that Denmark would withdraw the 430 troops it has operating under British command in northern Basra in August this year.
A unit of four Danish helicopters and 55 soldiers will work alongside the British until December.

Hey Merlin. The book is written by Bob Altemeyer an associate professor of Psychology at U of Manitoba. His book is available as a PDF online, and was used by John Dean in his most recent work about the authoritarian mindset and how it is almost exclusively a conservative (Republican) far right mindset.

RWA stands for right wing authoritarian. It describes the type of person that is attracted to the authoritarian mindset, and some about authoritarian leaders. I recently started reading it, and yes, the troll mindset fits like a glove.

    From the introduction:

Authoritarianism is something authoritarian followers and authoritarian
leaders cook up between themselves. It happens when the followers submit too
much to the leaders, trust them too much, and give them too much leeway to do
whatever they want–which often is something undemocratic, tyrannical and
brutal. In my day, authoritarian fascist and authoritarian communist dictatorships
posed the biggest threats to democracies, and eventually lost to them in wars
both hot and cold. But authoritarianism itself has not disappeared, and I=m going
to present the case in this book that the greatest threat to American democracy
today arises from a militant authoritarianism that has become a cancer upon the
    nation.

Yeah it might look that way. But its only because he doesn’t understand them. See my post #70… er never mind. You wouldn’t understand it either.

I do not know how cross-cultural these personalities are, but the belief that women should be subservient to men is a defining aspect of the Right Wing Authoritarian, usually with religion as the excuse.

For example these churches strongly advocate a traditional family structure of
father-as-head, mother as subservient to her husband and caretaker of the husband’s
begotten, and kids as subservient, period. The authoritarian followers who fill a lot of
the pews in these churches strongly agree. And they want everybody’s family to be
like that. (A word of advice, guys: check with your wives first.)

Thanks for the tease and the answer!

I will get it right after I finish Glenn Greenwald’s new book, “A Tragic Legacy.” An excellent read, by the way. Greenwald rocks! He makes the powerful case of how the entire thrust of Bush is based around “Good vs Evil” and how, because of that, he has been manipulated by the factions that are driving “The Decider.” (like the religious right and the neocon warmongers.)

All that stuff is true, and I did not intend to hijack the thread. I just have been struck by the consistency of the troll posts in terms of meeting the criteria for Right Wing Authoritarians. These people make up some 23% of the general population. (ironically, about Bush’s approval rating). These are the die hards in America who still cling to the Bush cabal’s cloud of lies as if they were golden nuggets of truth and wisdom. And here, on this thread, another official contradicts the fog of lies we have been getting from this criminal administration. And the trolls are fine with fearless leader wanting to kill dark skinned people to protect us from al Qaeda and the people who god put on our oil.

They don’t hide it at all! In Catholicism, where are the women priests? The obvious list is long. Nuns are respected for their subservience in my view, although it is not stated openly. Actions scream louder than papal encyclicals.

… I did not intend to hijack the thread.

You did not do that! This is not Off Topic at all! RWA needs to be talked about again and again until it becomes a mantra of the American public. They are hiding this ideology through many means! It has many heads like Medusa. We keep arguing and cutting off one head (issue, with true facts,) or another but another grows to replace it! Attack the ideology!

We need to go to the psychological heart of these sick people and expose their basic sickness. That sickness shows up in every issue that is important to the American people. Whether its women’s rights, foreign policy or poverty. George Lakoff pushes this point as well. Unfortunately he is misunderstood… Sigh.

The media is not liberal — they are the ones making everything political and if it makes Bushie look bad, it’s “liberal” and therefore untouchable.

In 2004, Bush won the popular vote by 2.7%, the smallest margin of victory for an incumbent president since 1828. That’s 1828. And he was not only the incumbent but a war-time incumbent. Bush 2004 won because of a very narrow victory in one state, Ohio.

So, what’s your point? Oh, I forgot. You don’t have one.

Big Zero, you are a piece of work. To say:

In spite of Hitler’s evil, he was a fascinating character in what he was able to accomplish during his lifetime. Who knows how far Hitler could have gone in destroying European nations and rebuilding them in his image had it not been for the United States’ “interventionism”.

Yikes!!! You admire Hitler!!! ………………..Not good.

Hitler embarked on a war of aggression, not unlike Bush. Driven by his delusion that he was on God’s mission.

Fortunately, genocide isn’t (or doesn’t at this point appear to be) on dub’ya’s mind.

GWB started this disaster based on his desire to rectify what he perceived to be his father’s failure. He appealed to greed, his own and that of his buds, as well as his utter faith in the ignorance of the American people, to get the thumbs up. This was not a war to stop a genocide, it was a war to settle a beef. Not yours. Not mine. Not the thousands of soldiers who sacrificed their lives. For his.

If Halliburton and the Bush “Rangers” can make a buck in the process . . . . Yee Haw!

You raise good points. Why did Pelosi come right out of the box asserting that no empeachment proceedings were in the works? I’m a bit rushed, but that’s a question that deserves an answer.

Recognizing that Anon is a troll, I’ve got to say . . . here in blog-land, we are demanding action, and we are getting none. If dems are complicit in the various debacles, our good dems have no ultimate incentive to tackle these problems.

These facts and this knowledge could come back and bite dems.

    . . . .

_In his last words moments before he was killed, Tillman snapped at a panicky comrade under fire to shut up and stop ’sniveling.’

_ Army attorneys sent each other congratulatory e-mails for keeping criminal investigators at bay as the Army conducted an internal friendly-fire investigation that resulted in administrative, or non-criminal, punishments.”

    Satyam,

Do you speak English? Read English? Can you comprehend English?

Bush: “Iraq is central to the war on terror”

Satyam, attempting to parse Bush: “Iraq is the central terror threat”

Are these statements congruent? No, they’re not.

As Gistaro explained, the primary concern is al Qaeda i South Asia, you know, where bin Laden is? Thus, as Bush said, Iraq is central because he says bin Laden and his men are running the enterprise in Iraq.

The primary concern is thus the men behind the operation, al Qaeda with bin Laden, while Iraq is a central battleground because al Qaeda is using it to attack US soldiers and create a safe haven where they can plan and train for attacks.

If only Think Progress writers comprehended English… Well, actually, they probably do - they’re just being dishonest.

  116. Edward Shipwash Says:

The terrorist group that attacked us on 9/11 has been empowered and glorified by the unjust war in Iraq. Now they are thriving in Iraq because of Bush. And he is now trying to use this fact to his advantage as an excuse for continuing the illegal war. How much longer will the lies and mass murders of this administration be tolerated?
