Bill O’Reilly said recently, “When we see objectionable things [on my website], we take it off immediately.” AmericaBlog notes a commenter on billoreilly.com who suggests a terrorist attack against the U.S. Capitol building. For pointing that out, John Aravosis says he has now been banned from the site.
UPDATE: BarbinMD from DailyKos was banned too.
Ahhh. You smell that? Free Speech….
July 26th, 2007 at 12:13 pmDon’t you have to pay to post on that site??
July 26th, 2007 at 12:13 pmIs he gonna get a refund??
Oh yes, O’Reilly does in fact remove “objectionable things” from his site. Of course, one must take into account Bill-O’s definition of “objectionable”…
July 26th, 2007 at 12:15 pmApparently, to O’Reilly, “objectionable” means objectionable to him – not to the vast majority of reasonable people.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:16 pmColbert had a funny segment on O’Reilly and DailyKos.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:16 pmIt doesn’t matter anyway, our Reichstag fire has already come and gone. Of course, Chimpy & Co. will need another to invoke NSPD 51…
July 26th, 2007 at 12:17 pmI hope Aravosis keeps chipping away at BO until he’s brought to his knees.
Fortunately, that probably won’t take all that long. :)
July 26th, 2007 at 12:17 pmNot to mention that Lane Hudson from http://www.huffingtonpost.com has contacted the Secret Service about a post that appeared on billoreilly.com threatening Hillary Clinton. They are taking this very seriously. Check it out.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:19 pmI saw the Colbert Report last night. That was really hilarious. Putting the felafel-loving Papa Bear in his place.
Earlier that day I sampled that Ben and Jerry’s Stephen Colbert’s Americone Dream. Like the show last night, it was delicious.
I sent Olbermann a email yesterday as well about Billo’s latest terroristic threats. I hope he’ll air them tonight.
PEACE!
July 26th, 2007 at 12:24 pmI have to give kudos to Think Progress. I have never been banned or blocked on this site. Daily Kos bans people. O’Reilly bans people.
What are they afraid of?
July 26th, 2007 at 12:38 pmThat’s rich for John to be banned.

It is my understanding that a few people have been banned here, but just a few. Free speech at it’s… um… finest? It’s always free here, but it sure ain’t very pretty some days, is it?
BTW, I rather enjoy the free-for-alls, up to a certain point. When it degenerates into poo-flinging, I usually go home for the night.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:47 pmTP bans people all the time. Just watch, this post won’t be on. I have been banned from here under a different name.
TP bans people, TP is full of hypocrites, but it is expected, they are lefties.
July 26th, 2007 at 12:48 pmTP does ban people all the time. I guess they don’t like Free Speech either, eh?

Free speech, democracy — they can be ugly things but better than the alternatives.
Maybe I should be less reasonable so I can be banned too!

Indeed, Cynicon, indeed. A truth well spoken.
July 26th, 2007 at 1:05 pmWhen will the conservatives of this country start making arguments and points that aren’t completely idiotic and dishonest?
I mean the comments section = endorsed viewpoints tactic is borderline retarded.

I wasn’t banned for being unreasonable. I was banned for voicing public support for ace’s posts, and offering to email the contents of said posts to other interested commenters, after they were “disappeared” from the site.

WORSE than the alternatives.
July 26th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
This is really a stupid argument. The whole attractive element of blogging is that there is an economy of ideas, and censorship is completely unnecessary. If you are saying crazy stuff, people will ignore you.
Further, TP is being dishonest in posting this story. If you follow the link, you’ll see that it is clear that this was a sarcastic comment. That’s not to say that O’Reilly’s objections are any more palpable, but the blogosphere is really letting Bill-O drag them into the mud. Just ignore him; he’s a crazy @ssh0le

Based on what I’ve seen flying around here, ace’s comments must have been pretty bad TripMaster.
July 26th, 2007 at 1:12 pmArguing over whether one side or the other is nastier is pointless. Arguing over whether someone who confuses the comment section with the actual diary entries is a moron is perfectly legitimate.

They border on filibusters… really, really long and often off-topic. Good, but long, and off-topic. Some of the people banned here of late, and not banned… I dunno. Doesn’t make sense.
July 26th, 2007 at 1:14 pmCynicon Implant sez:
First of all, that’s a matter of opinion, and there are many here who value and support ace’s contributions here.
Second, it’s not like I reposted these comments. I saved them offline and offered to email them to other interested commentators. How exactly did my offering this merit a banning?

That’s a valid question. Same for BnF’s banning, or willyloman, too.

Not sure. See Republic’s post above — seems like banning/blocking is not too logical right now.
Sounds like what you did was reasonable and respectful.

July 26th, 2007 at 1:21 pmAt least TP allows right-wingers to argue (if that’s what you want to call it) here. You know, they don’t let you post on sites like RedState if you’re liberal. You trolls come here precisely because it’s an open forum.
That said, I’m not sure why you come here when you’re mercilessly mocked and humiliated.

About the same time. He has reappeared briefly once or twice and did say that he had simply been busy w/ his new practice, but he also said that his posts had started disappearing and the none day, he got cut off as he was typing a reply, I think. It’s been a week or 10 days since he said that.

When I get attacked personally I figure it’s because the attacker’s argument is weak and they are trying to get me to go away so that won’t be revealed. Either that or they are just emotionally retarded.
I come here because I am genuinely trying to understand the left side of things. I spend a lot of time reading conservative stuff and I’m trying to get a balance. It’s hard to get to the truth just reading one side.

Actually, there are times that commenters can’t get on the TP site at all, and it’s some sort of glitch. There have been several times where I couldn’t access TP for 10-12 hours, but I wasn’t banned, and the site was functioning.
July 26th, 2007 at 1:59 pmWhatever happened to Ryan Neat? & Mr Ho?

Ryan N was banned for some reason I never knew, and Mr Ho has an ever changing name. :)
July 26th, 2007 at 2:14 pmCrooks and Liars deleted some of my posted comments because I wrote that a particular headline of theirs smacked of Matt Drudge and that C&L could do better than that.
I was told by the site monitor not to insult their site on their bandwidth.
It really surprised me, because I expect as much from a turd like O’Reilly, but not from a progressive blog site.

If you’re serious, I’d recommend reading something besides TP or other blogs. First of all, Joe Conason’s “It Can Happen Here,” which is a real eye-opener about the Bush administration that should alarm any true conservative as well as true liberals. It’s a short read, and a good one.
Glenn Greenwald, “A Tragic Legacy”, which analyzes the effects of Bush’s “good vs evil mentality.”
And “Fiasco” by Thomas Ricks, on the disaster of the war and occupation in Iraq from a military perspective, and the future of the US military as a result.

Blinded by the Right
Conservatives without Conscience (my all time favorite).
After reading Conservatives without Conscience I finally think I understand the Conservative mindset, at least the conservatives who are the serfs, not the royalty. And it’s all about needing an authority figure in their life to tell them what to think and how to act. That pretty much describes the trolls on this site and on every other site I have visited.

First to the troll: It’s WORST. W-O-R-S-T. Not worsy. Second, even the real K.O. can spell 100% better than you.
So until you learn to read correctly, spell perfectly, think with an open mind and speak clear English, kindly do not come to this site. This site is for patriotic intellects only.
July 26th, 2007 at 6:23 pmBanning dissent reminds me of neonazi forums. Every time they got served, they would ban the “offender” with the lamest excuses.

Yep, Fair and Balanced. :/
July 26th, 2007 at 10:11 pmOff topic. This is a story that every American must see.

It doesn’t sound like it applies to at least some of the examples, but sites are not required to allow anybody to post anything they want. Especially if they have posted rules like no personal attacks, no racist language, etc., I would argue that any site does have the right to ban anyone who violates those rules. Just wanted to make this point, which seems to have been ignored.
Legitimate dissent should not be deleted or banned, but for their own sake I can see why any self-respecting site would want to get rid of anything that sounds like a threat, even if it is “just a joke,” if only because it will be exploited and held up by the O’Reillys of the world as an example of what “those” people are like. Maybe one of the conservatives here could explain to me why most Republican “humor” these days involves violence and death. (Incidentally, I was a registered Republican until about 1990 when I saw the light and became, as my card says in NYS, either a “none” or a “blank.”)
July 27th, 2007 at 11:22 amThis is weird, I’m reading all of these comments by “banned” individuals. I must have ESP since their comments are not posted.
The only reasons that I would see to ban an individual would be threatening speech or excessive spamming being done as an attempt to disrupt the conversation. (off-topic trolls)
July 27th, 2007 at 3:27 pmThe first and last time I attempted to post on FreeRepublic—I got banned. I was doing a good job of pretending I was one of them and just said “I don’t think we should so strongly back Jeff Gannon because it appears the only experience he has is as a man-on-man hooker and we will be sorry”. Instantly banned for life. I was right, too.
