Speaking with the House Judiciary Committee today, FBI director Robert S. Mueller contradicted Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ sworn Senate testimony from Tuesday, confirming that the “terrorist surveillance program” run by the National Security Agency (NSA) was the subject of discussion during Gonzales’ controversial visit to former Attorney General John Ashcroft’s hospital bed. Gonzales had testified that it was about “other intelligence activities”. Watch it:
Mueller’s testimony is only the latest evidence suggesting that Gonzales perjured himself before Congress.
– On Tuesday, Sen. John D. Rockefeller (D-WV) and Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA), who were briefed on the program at the March 2004 White House meeting, also confirmed that the NSA program was discussed.
– Yesterday, the AP revealed a four-page, May 2006 memo from then-National Intelligence Director John Negroponte confirming that the NSA program was the subject of a March 2004 White House intelligence briefing for top congressional leaders that preceded the hospital visit.
Despite the evidence contradicting Gonzales’ statements to Congress, the White House is refusing to acknowledge the truth. Asked by reporters about the contradiction last night, Justice spokesman Brian Roehrkasse said Gonzales “stands by his testimony.” Today, White House spokesperson Tony Snow said Gonzales “was speaking consistently.”
Earlier today, Senate Democrats called for a special prosecutor to investigate whether Gonzales has perjured himself.
UPDATE: More at the Gavel.
Transcript:
”Did you have an understanding that that the conversation was on TSP?” asked Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas. TSP stands for terrorist surveillance program.”I had an understanding the discussion was on a NSA program, yes,” Mueller answered.
Jackson asked again: ”We use ‘TSP,’ we use ‘warrantless wiretapping,’ so would I be comfortable in saying that those were the items that were part of the discussion?”
“The discussion was on a national NSA program that has been much discussed, yes,” Mueller responded.
To hell with a special prosecutor. Arrest Gonzo.
July 26th, 2007 at 4:40 pmHey, Gonzo!
Did ya get the number of that bus?
July 26th, 2007 at 4:42 pm#1 – I agree that he should be arrested. But, I do want a special prosecutor. I want one like Ken Starr. Does anyone remember why he was hired in the first place. What was he initially investigating. Because in the end he had investigated everything including what Bill Clinton ate for breakfast. How much money did our taxpaying dollars go to that investigation that turned up absolutely no wrongdoing?

July 26th, 2007 at 4:44 pmGonzo just got completely creamed. I can’t take anything less than an arrest. If you or I did this mcuh lying in front of congrss we would be in jail.
Gonzo himself acknowledged yesterday that he had no idea why he still has a job. i guess the Bush administration still needs a piano player. More like a trained monkey.

July 26th, 2007 at 4:46 pmB- Lets give Ken 25 mil, like with the Clinton prosecution. But, it won’t take more than a few thousand to put this lying ass away for awhile.
When will the American people get fed up with the constant lying and outright criminal actions of this administration?
July 26th, 2007 at 4:46 pmCracks appear. And then then first trickle of water. The dam begins to creak ominously… Stay tuned!
July 26th, 2007 at 4:46 pmGonzo makes Bush look coherent! That is scary.
July 26th, 2007 at 4:46 pmLiar, liar, Bunnypants on fire…
Losers, liars, cheaters, election stealers, traitors, war-mongers, torturers, the list of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Cunning Rice and Alberto crimes grows more bloated by the microsecond…
Who will have the honor of finally bursting the Bush baloney bubble and bring this pathetic cabal of gangsters down to earth and into the local slammer?
Maybe we need to set up a betting pool as to who and what causes the final collapse of this illegitimate Bush regime. Maybe a Vegas bookie can start posting odds and taking bets…
July 26th, 2007 at 4:48 pmThe challenge here is that we have an administration which has no respect for the system and no honor. I don’t belive Americans have ever faced such a thing. The constitutional system, in part, depends on honorable public servants who value the process. These people are clearly not honorable and have no respect for the constitution. They will not do the honorable thing. That would be appointing a Special Prosecutor. Bush won’t allow it.

You’re correct. There is no honor within the administration, save taking care of themselves. The constitution is an inconvenience to their goals.
So now we have three different contradictions to Gonzales’ testimony…
Members of the gang of eight
The memo to Hastert from Negroponte
FBI director Robert S. Mueller
Poor gonzo –
July 26th, 2007 at 4:54 pmGonzo is getting thrown to the wolves and he doesn’t even see it. He should go back to practicing real estate law at Vinson & Elkins, the law firm that gave us the Enron debacle.
July 26th, 2007 at 4:56 pm“Despite the evidence contradicting Gonzales’ statements to Congress, the White House is refusing to acknowledge the truth. Asked by reporters about the contradiction last night, Justice spokesman Brian Roehrkasse said Gonzales “stands by his testimony.â€
Gonzales is either a complete moron who would proudly “stand by” on deck while his ship sinks to the bottom of the sea, or he is confident that no matter what happens, he will be pardoned by his boss. Maybe a little of both.
July 26th, 2007 at 4:57 pmIf Fredo could get off for unadulterated ignorance he’d be exonerated in a nanosecond.
July 26th, 2007 at 4:57 pmCol. Ripper @ 12,
You are completely correct. Paul Krugman says something similar in the forward to one of his books. The Bush Administration has switched paradigms; they will not follow “the rules” but bold-facedly cheat. If we do not stand up for the rule of law and take back our Constitution, I fear we will have lost it. The worst thing we can do is to “go along to get along” hoping that we’ll come out on top at the next election. You can’t bargain with those whom you cannot trust.
July 26th, 2007 at 4:59 pmSince Briseadh na Faire is enjoying a lovely vacation with the family, I’ll put this up for him:
July 26th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
There was a telling comment from the WH about Fredo’s lies. I don’t remember the exact quote, but it was something like “we believe that Gonzales stands by what he said”.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:00 pmMr. Gonzales, tear down this stonewall.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:00 pmI’m not going to stand on the words of Mr. Slamdunk to make the case for Gonzo’s criminal activity but it makes for a nice side dish.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:01 pmHow Gonzo ever got his degree and past the bar, eludes me. Even Cracker Jacks has some standards.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:03 pm#12 makes a good point. Even though Nixon had little honor, there were still some in his administration who did and resigned rather than enabled Nixon’s continued abuse of power — Eliot Richardson (AG) and William Ruckelshouse (sp??) (Deputy AG) to name a few when they resigned rather than fire the Watergate special prosecutor, Archibald Cox. John Dean, WH Counsel, is another — ratted them out during the hearings.
I am harpressed to find any in this administration. Powell may have resigned, but way the hell too late and under the guise of a new term, new blood theory. Every last one of them deserve to have their names tarnished for the rest of their lives, save Paul O’Neal and Richard Clarke.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:03 pmAnother point of this visit and discussion that needs to be echoed is that it happened with people in the room that did not have the proper security clearance to hear such discussion.
Not only did Gonzo try to influence a drugged man but he divulged top secret information.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:04 pmoops — should have been 11 and 12.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:04 pmYup. Gonzo’s gone.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:05 pmWhile I agree with the cries for arrest / impeachment / Gonzo lied – I still wish that while Shrub was undergoing his proceedure last weekend that a dozen demo congress had walked into the room and started asking him about foreign policy.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:07 pm#22 Don’t kid yourself — Abu is no dummy, just plays one on TV to protect another slight stooge, but not nearly as stoogey as he would have you believe he is.
Gonzo previously worked at a very prestigous law firm — Vinson & Elkins — which does not make it a practice of hiring dummies.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:07 pmCan the prez put a new AG in as a recess appointment? ’cause if he can, it smells like somethings cooking in the kitchen.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:07 pmI think everyone has been given the sign. Time to exit the bus. I hope Fredo was planning ahead and has bag packed and his ticket for Paraguay.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:08 pmso incompetent he cant even lie well
July 26th, 2007 at 5:09 pmRight now there’s enough factual testimony out there to indict Gonzales and rid him from office. Comey was there and testified; now Mueller testifies against Gonzo. I think Gonzo’s goose is cooked.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:15 pmPerjury against the highest official in the Legislative Branch of the Government….what does this say about the nadir this country has hit, thanks to Bush and his group of sycophantic yes-men. It’s no wonder our rep on the world stage is so horrendous.

So, let’s see….we have a perjured white house official (office of the VP) and now a perjuring AG. Wow! This is really getting interesting – time to storm the bastille! Let’s pop the popcorn and put our seat belts on…it’s going to be a very wild ride.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:18 pmKonflikt: I don’t think so; after all, Bush owes Gonzo for all of the scrapes over the decades which he’s gotten his sorry butt out of….besides, once Gonzo goes, then it will move up the chain of command and nail both Cheney and Bush as well.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:19 pmPeter C. & Leftcoast: The good news is that we have another election coming up. There is a confluence of events at work here. The market is now in freefall because credit has run out. Both the Deimler-Crysler buyout and the biggest buyout in the history of Britain fell through early today because the institutional investors literally couldn’t get credit. The world (with the exception of the Chinese market) is out of liquidity. The last time world markets were in a state like this was in 1929, just before the Republican Great Depression.
Politically, we have arguably the most lawless administration in history and the vast majority of Americans are fed up.
What’s good about this is that historically, periods like this marked by tremendous wealth vs. increasing poverty linked with the collapse of unregulated markets have always been followed by periods of tremendous populist progressive eras. The panic at the end of the 19th century let to the progressive movements spearheaded by Teddy Roosevelt. And, of course, the Republican Great Depression led to the New Deal which created the strongest middle class in American history.
So, let’s keep our heads up!
July 26th, 2007 at 5:20 pmYeah, but nobody laid a glove on him yet!
July 26th, 2007 at 5:20 pmThe key was in Schumer’s question which Gonzo continued to evade and, and managed to indict by his bumbling tactics as a result and that is: Who sent him? George Bush
The other indicting comment had to do with Gonzo’s statement indicating yet another covert illegal spy program. Let’s get to the bottom of that one because Congress doesn’t know about this one.
If Gonzo goes, Bushey will be next.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:21 pm#40 Why think about “laying a glove” when he’s already been eviscerated?
July 26th, 2007 at 5:22 pmThings are moving, folks….and it’s about damn time!

July 26th, 2007 at 5:24 pmTony Snowjob was just on CNN parsing the words of Mueller, and just as Mueller didn’t utter exactly the same words, he agreed to the understanding as Jackson explained it to him, but Snowjob denies he said it.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:24 pmThere is a special school in the White House that specializes in teaching these liars like Snowjob how to lie with impunity no matter what the evidence, testimony or facts may be.
Snow actually would qualify as an “honors” student what with the experience he brought over from Faux News.
#38…You could be right. But it just seems like the tide turned. Suddenly Redstate was calling for Gonzales’ head among others who had been previous cheering on his obfuscation. It almost seems like certain people had been told to unsheath their knives because Gonzo had to take the fall.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:25 pmveritas: “If Gonzo goes, Bushey will be next.”
I don’t know about that. I think the neocons in power act like organized crime in many ways. I think of Alberto more as a consigliori than a lawyer and certainly not as an Attorney General. I believe that, like a consigliori, his job is to protect his boss, not the constitution. He will fall on his sword and do his time if necessary rather than rat out the Godfather.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:25 pmRU: I see we’ve done it again! I just typed a comment about Ted Stevens calling him a human “corpse”….and I come back and see your “corpse comment” as well. Have an interesting Richard Clarke story. I was having dinner alone at Olives at the W at Union Square when who should sit next to me on the benches at the next table, but Richard Clarke and two others. The tables there are very close and you could not mistake him or his voice. This was right after he published his book. I did not talk to him but finished and ordered him a Cognac anonymously with the note — “We all cannot be wrong. The emperor has no clothes.” The best drink I ever bought!
July 26th, 2007 at 5:28 pmRet. Col Jack Ripper: You really needs to watch the interviews of Bruce Fein, Deputy Gen. to Ronald Reagan who believes that impeachment is not only proper according to the constitution but the “remedy” for this constitutional crisis which Bush has created. If it’s not done and done now, then the people will have lost their voice and become “children or serfs” as he calls it. The people need to use the impeachment tool to remedy the abuse of power overall – or this will become the future precedent and the next president will pick up their imperial power from here. It must occur in order to save this democracy.
And, let’s face it: They’ve both committed many impeachable crimes and offenses which the people are aware of. Bill Moyers says: Can we afford to find that the Emperor has no clothes and just leave him that way? I think not.

July 26th, 2007 at 5:30 pmRe-read “The Imperial Presidency” by Arthur Schlessinger sometime. The Bush Cabal is nothing new; in fact, many of their tactics are taken verbatim from the Third Reich. They’re really a bunch of bumbling, bungling idiots.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:30 pmleftcoast, that was very kind and now I’m embarrassed, but thank you very much. My Grandmother used to tell me that it wasn’t all bad during the Depression. Yes, there was a lot of unemployment and it was hard to do things many of us take for granted, but some people did OK and a lot of people got by with the government’s help. I think supermajorities in both houses of Congress and a Democratic president will get things done a lot quicker than we’ve seen in government in quite a while. I’m imagining a return to tariffs as a way to shore up American manufacturing, help for people with credit problems, mortage protection for middle-class Americans in danger of losing their homes, universal single-payer health for all Americans to eliminate the fear of bankruptcy due to medical problems and government-mandated and financed programs to develop renewable energy and rebuild the nation’s infrastructure which has been decaying now for decades.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:32 pmLeftcoast: This is also getting strange. I hadn’t read your post about the Richard Clark incident and the emperor with no clothes…..and just watched the Bill Moyers piece where he used it as an analogy….great minds think alike?? Too coincidental.

I agree, JG. In addition, I’ve always thought Gonzo had something on the Chimp, and that’s why he feels so comfortable sitting through this storm. But if Cheney has taken the reins in regard to the “Gonzo problem,” he’ll be gone ASAP. Maybe there’s a backup plan. It would surprise me if there wasn’t.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:33 pmGonzo won’t have any trouble adjusting to prison life. He’s been getting fu__ed in the arse by bush, rove, cheney, etc ever since assumed the AG *position*.

Gonzales has no worries he has the protection of the White House. Criminals walk the halls of the White House and lies, crimes and murder is legal. Any American who refuses to testify when given a subpoena or who lies under oath all the time will go to jail unless their working for the GOP or Bush Administration. The world has gotten wise to this it’s about time the American people wake up to the truth. Even Judges like the one that dismissed the civil suit filed by the Wilson’s. Now when the Bush appointed Supreme Court Justices come back we’ll see the famous 5-4 vote. Yes things will be great as segregation and racism return. Justice Thomas will have to look for a Master as he will be removed. Alot more jobs will be open for white males as the females working in top jobs will be replaced. As for minorities well I suggest that start reading American History to see what the future will be for them. The soldiers who live to come home from Iraq will be in for a shock. They put their lives on the line for the US only to find out they have no rights. Looks like the White House is ready to give up another insider Gonzo. Bush will have to give the famous illegal pardon or make up a new law to protect his Spanish friend from going to jail.

Ken Starr was assigned in 1994 to investigate the Clintons’ roles in the failed Whitewater real estate deal, and to investigate the death of Vince Foster. He hung around trolling for more dirt up to the impeachment of Clinton.
July 26th, 2007 at 5:39 pmveritas, don’t get me wrong. As a student of history, I can’t think of any president who has deserved to be impeached more than Bush. I think there are more demonstratable impeachable crimes than for any other administration. I just don’t think this current crop of repubs will cooperate, that’s all.
And, I have read “The Imperial Presidency,” but these people have taken things to new unprecedented levels. Many people who worked for Nixon and certainly many members of his own party at the time had a much greater respect for the system and the consitution than this group. In addition, in previous “imperial presidencies,” the media challenged their power, whereas now we have a completely compromised corporate media which will not do anything to negatively affect their parent company’s bottom line. Careerism and corporate power have broken our “Fourth Estate” and that’s a new wrinkle we didn’t have before.

July 26th, 2007 at 5:40 pmI keep visualizing the old Thomas Nast cartoon of Boss Tweed sitting in the ruins of Tammany Hall when it all came crashing down. There will one day be a corresponding image of Bush sitting in the ruins of his failed presidency…

July 26th, 2007 at 5:51 pmIt’s almost astonishing to me that conservatives don’t seem to have the intelligence or the imagination to see that the shoe could be on the other foot. If a supermajority Democratic-controlled congress and a Democratic president are doing things they don’t like, will they appreciate being called “traitors” for opposing these policies? As someone pointed out, Clinton allowed for the appointment of Special Prosecutors. Can you imagine the hysterical whining if he had acted like Bush is acting today?
And then there’s the projection. Yikes! Murder???!!! Kill all repubicans???!!! These fantasies are the product of a sick mind.

Gonzales must have had that “operation” that takes away the logical thought processes. The procedure or drug replaces a functioning brain with a compliant, empty shell that is easily programmed with information suited to the agenda of the NeoCon

July 26th, 2007 at 6:07 pmYou say the liberals are about to commit murder or violence against Republicans! But can’t you see it is the GOP that is already doing things like that! Tom Daschle was attacked with anthrax and miraculously no GOP politicians were harmed despite the fact that the GOP are the ones murdering Muslims. So the anthrax was likely an inside job benefitting the GOP! Not too many GOP leaders have been killed in plane crashes lately or shot dead…
If liberals FINALLY do GET UP and GET VIOLENT it will be LONG OVERDUE!!!!
The nuts are getting desperate, and dangerous, keep an eye on your neighbors.
July 26th, 2007 at 6:08 pmTo me, the fired U.S. Attorney scandal looks like a delaying action. The administration is dragging everything out as long as they possibly can. The evidence has been published in the public domain, including the latest batch of e-mails concerning the republican caging strategy to sway the voting results in the last two elections by challenging democratic voters.
Doesn’t it seem like the attorney general is deliberately perjuring himself, acting like a red flag being waved in front of a bull to draw attention to himself and away from the White House. Meanwhile, his presentation of himself being a forgetful idiot who don’t know nothin’ keeps the eye of the Public and the Congress on him as red meat to chase after, and off the more important task of REMOVING bush & co. from the government.
The longer it takes to deal with gonzo and the two white house presidential aides just cited for contempt by the Senate Judiciary subcommittee, the less time there is to deal with the issue of impeachment for the bigger fish. If they can just hold out for 12 more months, perhaps the country and Congress will actually buy that argument that it’s not worth wasting the time going through the motions to actually impeach the primary criminals.
The thing of it is, even if bush & cheney were to be impeached, we wouldn’t have managed to actually get to the ones responsible for what’s taken place.

Bush is known for being a weasily little liar, a corporate b.s. artist and blaming everyone but himself for any problems or mistakes.
Truman was a man of modest background from the midwest who didn’t even graduate from college. He was a self-made man.
Bush was the 17th legacy from his family to attend Yale, a line of legacies which stretched back to the 1840’s. He is the product of American aristocracy.

July 26th, 2007 at 8:44 pmFor an in-depth analysis of just what Gonzales (and BushCo) may well be up to I HIGHLY recommend this article at TPMMuckraker. It seems to cover the method to the Gonzales madness of blatant perjury (that may not REALLY be perjury). Read it. If it is accurate, Bush must NOT be allowed to get this past the senate and the American people.
July 26th, 2007 at 8:54 pmIf this turns out to be a double post I apologize. There was some oddness with my first attempt.
I highly recommend everyone read the in-depth analysis on the Gonzales/illegal domestic spying program (otherwise known as TSP) at TPMMuckraker. If it is true as this article lays it out, then BushCo must NOT be allowed to pull one over on the senate and, by extension, the American people. They are trying desperately to hide the horrors of the original program by obfuscating it with “the program announced by the President” nonsense. This is very careful choice of phrasing and a potential dodge of perjury to boot. Read the article.

. . . .
_In his last words moments before he was killed, Tillman snapped at a panicky comrade under fire to shut up and stop ’sniveling.’
_ Army attorneys sent each other congratulatory e-mails for keeping criminal investigators at bay as the Army conducted an internal friendly-fire investigation that resulted in administrative, or non-criminal, punishments.â€

July 27th, 2007 at 2:56 amAh, the bait and switch, again!
Mueller: “a NSA program”
ThinkProgress: “the NSA TSP”
Same thing really. Could be. Might be. Therefore: is. See how easy that is?
Mueller could have been talking about any other NSA program, but Think Progress says that since he stated it was a NSA program, it must be the TSP. Think Progress thus establishes that the NSA only has one program, which is the TSP.
Glad we’ve got that all figured out. Now my only question is, does the NSA really only have one program, the TSP? Think Progress, what say you?
