During testimony before the House Armed Services Committee today, the Center for American Progress’ military expert and co-author of Strategic Reset, Lawrence Korb, challenged Congress to address the growing crisis of troop morale and readiness in the U.S. forces as a result of the Bush administration’s failures in Iraq. Korb argued the Army is “broken” and in need of immediate repair:
I say to those people who want to keep up this surge indefinitely, if you have the courage of your convictions, then call for reinstatement of the draft. Because our volunteer Army was not designed, as Gen. Abizaid said, for the long war.
Escalation architect ret. Gen. Jack Keane and Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) tag-teamed in an effort to downplay the diminished strength of the military. Keane said calling the Army broken “is one of the most offensive statements we can make.”
Hunter, ignorant of the views of numerous national security experts, said to Korb, “I don’t think that any of those people you’ve quoted — did Gen. McCaffrey ever say, ‘the Army is broken?’” Korb responded, “I will give you the exact quote, ‘The ground combat capability of the U.S. Army forces is shot.’” Watch it:
Keane and Hunter are not only callously ignorant of the reality of the situation in Iraq and the condition of U.S. forces fighting there, but are also ignorant of the judgments of other military experts:
- Gen. Colin Powell: The “active Army is about broken,” Powell said. Even beyond Iraq, the Army and Marines have to “grow in size, in my military judgment,” he said, adding that Congress must provide significant additional funding to sustain them. [LINK]
- Lt. Gen. James R. “Ron” Helmly: In a “memo to other military leaders [Helmly expressed] “deepening concern” about the continued readiness of his troops, who have been used heavily in Iraq and Afghanistan, and warning that his branch of 200,000 soldiers “is rapidly degenerating into a ‘broken’ force.”" [LINK]
- Former Defense Secretary William Perry: The Bush administration has “failed adequately to assess the size of force and equipment needed in post-invasion Iraq, creating “a real risk of ‘breaking the force’.” [LINK]
- Chief Of Staff Gen. Peter Schoomaker: “Over the last five years, the sustained strategic demand … is placing a strain on the Army’s all-volunteer force,” Schoomaker told the commission in a Capitol Hill hearing. “At his pace … we will break the active component” unless reserves can be called up more to help, Schoomaker said. B-2 Fitted for Huge Bunker Buster
http://www.strategypage.com/ htmw/ htairw/ articles/ 20070723.aspx
The U.S. Air Force is developing yet another capability for its 20 B-2 stealth bombers. A new bomb rack is being designed and built so the B-2 can drop the new, 15 ton Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). Three years ago, MOP replaced the proposed nuclear bomb penetrator. MOP can be carried by a B-52, but a B-2 is more likely to get through an intact, modern, air defense system.
The air force is putting a lot of money into developing new bomb racks for the B-2. Recent additions are racks which allow a B-2 to carry eighty 500 pound smart bombs, or sixteen 2,000 pound smart bombs. Another new rack allows the B-2 to carry over a hundred of the 250 pound SDB (Small Diameter Bomb) which has a ground penetrating ability.
The B-2 is also being equipped with a phased array radar and targeting pod capabilities, to enable it to find targets, as well as bomb them.

Economy Springs Out of Rut and Grows at 3.4 Percent Pace, Best Showing in More Than a Year
WASHINGTON (AP) — The economy snapped out of a lethargic spell and grew at a 3.4 percent pace in the second quarter, the strongest showing in more than a year. A revival in business spending was a main force behind the energized performance.

July 27th, 2007 at 2:46 pm23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father’s house:
28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
29 Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

We are rapidly getting to the point where we are going to have to end our fighting and bring our troops home to recuperate, or reinstate the draft. The BA seems to think that if we just whip the horse enough, we can get it to run farther.
I challenge the next administration — Democrat or Republican — to reinstate the draft if they want to go invade other countries. It sounds like political suicide, but if the cause is truly righteous, what American would object?

Comment by The Captain — July 27, 2007 @ 2:39 pm
I somehow suspect The Captain was one of those trolls waving the “new record high” of the stock market last week as evidence of how “strong” the Bush economy is. Yeah, have to come up with a new one this week, huh?
By the way, The Captain didn’t feel it necessary to paste this piece of the article:
Stronger spending by businesses and government powered the rebound in the April-to-June quarter. Individuals, however, tightened their belts as they coped with high gasoline prices and the ill effects of the housing slump. The sour housing market continued to weigh on national economic activity in the spring but not nearly as much as it had in previous quarters.
Interesting. Government spending played a big part in the stronger growth. I would think a conservative would decry more government spending? The rest of the paragraph doesn’t really sound all that rosy, does it?

Thursday, July 26, 2007 - FreeMarketNews.com
Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio), both presidential candidates, are co-sponsoring a bill that would end President Bush’s authority in Iraq within the next six months, according to Raw Story.
“I think if you approach this from a constitutional viewpoint, we can join hands with the left as well as the right and come up with a solution and get our troops home,” Paul said on MSNBC on Tuesday. Besides Kucinich, 18 other Democrats have signed on.
**Kucinich and Paul have more in common than just a deisre to end the occupation. They are truthtellers and uncorruptable. And that means more than policy disagreement.

July 27th, 2007 at 3:10 pmThank you, mikey r #42 for rebutting The Captain. If increasing the Federal spending helps the GNP, then this nation is in for a big hurt, ’cause the Congress hasn’t increased our taxes to cover it. Just more borrowing to increase our debt!! This is so like the Republicans, spending us to the disaster–then blaming the other guy!! Our military will pay a price far greater than gold for the greed of these Republicans.
July 27th, 2007 at 3:11 pm#57…Kay, I don’t have the quotes from Hillary and Barack in front of me but I heard them on the radio today.
Barack called Hillary Republican-Lite? Then Hillary responded that she wouldn’t meet with Hugo Chavez?
Has anybody asked Hillary why she dislikes Hugo Chavez? Wasn’t it a Republican backed coup attempt on Hugo Chavez that failed. Then Chavez nationalized his oil and withdrew billions of his dollars from our treasury. Now he spends his country’s oil wealth on his poor.
So I can see why the Republicans don’t like Hugo Chavez. They wanted to replace him with a neo-con puppet President who’d make sure the petro-dollars flowed through Texas.
So I ask the question again…Why does Hillary dislike Hugo Chavez? Sounds like Barack’s comment about Hillary being Republican-lite was right on the mark. Because a Democrat would have very little reason to hate Hugo Chavez. Unless Hillary stood to benefit from this? But then that would make Hillary undeniably a Republican. Hope this isn’t too complicated.
July 27th, 2007 at 3:13 pmWe simply have to get some leaders in place who firmly and unwaveringly support the view that telling the truth is never “offensive.” Truth always furthers progress; deceit and denial always obstruct progress. Maybe we also need to see this guy Korb get a prominent cabinet position with whoever winds up being the Dem nominee next year. It wouldn’t be bad to start hearing how these candidates are thinking in terms of organizing their team. I’d much rather be voting for a team rather than a single individual. We’ve seen how the other way works: you vote for a man supported by an unknown cadre of political cronies, and you get disaster.

July 27th, 2007 at 3:36 pmMr. President
July 27th, 2007 at 3:37 pmIt looks like it distills down to either reinstating the draft or defunding the war - a pretty obvious choice there. Or….if Congress wants to have a protracted war and long-term presence, then let them put their money where their mouths are by enlisting themselves, or a member of their immediate family to serve. It’s a pretty simple case for “defunding this war” and would occur in a heartbeat if they have to serve themselves or sacrifice their first-born child.

Of course, the next statement from the trols will be why do you (and us) hate the troops. Never seen a more demented bunch of wack jobs in my life. Maybe it is too many hours behind the keyboard of Grand Theft Auto and no breastfeeding when younger (or maybe too much of it now, at 36).
July 27th, 2007 at 3:49 pm#81: Whew!!You wore me out with the description of that day!

My personal hero.
July 27th, 2007 at 3:51 pmIs anyone surprised by this? it is the goal of the Neocons, as stated by Grover Norquist, to “strangle the government in a bathtub”. You can’t do this with a strong military. All ges according to plan.

I’m prepared for that, but NONE of them would ever meet me on the battlefield and say anything. Nor could any of them name one of us so-called “troops”. We are Soldiers not props, not idiots, and we’re damn sure not inhuman to the point where this BS doesn’t effect us. So to all who want to start that, I’ll quote another offensive statement, “Bring it On”
RIP

From a psychological perspective, the Bush/Cheney administration and its neocon allies succeeded in promoting the misguided and destructive war in Iraq by targeting our core concerns about vulnerability, injustice, distrust, superiority, and helplessness. Looking ahead, they will likely try to sell us a continuing occupation of Iraq—or an attack on Iran—in much the same way. I examine these warmongering appeals and how to counter them in a 10-minute YouTube video entitled “Resisting the Drums of War.” It’s available for viewing HERE.
July 27th, 2007 at 3:56 pmRepublican presidential candidate George W. Bush said in his nomination acceptance speech that “if called on by the commander-in-chief today, two entire divisions of the Army would have to report …, ‘Not ready for duty, sir.’”

I hear you! I am a wounded vet of the Vietnam “situation” and know what it feels like to have people criticize how I felt being an anti-war protester when I returned and threatened with arrest for my beliefs. I will never understood the mentality of throwing stones from a distance. Guess it comes with the Chickenhawk suit!!
Thanks for your service!
July 27th, 2007 at 4:08 pmTO ALL OF YOU TROLLS OUT THERE“Resisting the Drums of War.†IS NOT “RESISTING ARREST”!
July 27th, 2007 at 4:12 pmTHOUGHT I WOULD CLEAR THAT UP FOR YOU!
UNLESS OF COURSE, YOU WAS BEING ARRESTED BY THE MOFIA.
Of course, the next statement from the trols will be why do you (and us) hate the troops.

Respectfully, who cares about what they have to say? They have been wrong about everything since they were born. Let them play here posting incredibly stupid comments to get some attention.
Their credibility is in the bottom, cuz it takes courage to admit when you are wrong and all of them are but cowards.
July 27th, 2007 at 4:14 pmDO NOT TRUST EVEN YOUR OWN NEIGHBORS ! WHO Could blindly stir you into a war frenzy.
July 27th, 2007 at 4:15 pmsorry. should have added nothing. Nothing but cowards.
July 27th, 2007 at 4:15 pmThe army should be upset at this statement. But, should they be upset because he said it out loud, or because it is true?
July 27th, 2007 at 4:20 pmWhy wait? Get the dems to vote on it now. Bush will veto it but it will be a show of support for the troops and make the dems appear strong on defense.

Great idea! The very moment that the Dems decide to invade another country, I’ll be first in line to pressure my Congressmen (a Dem) to introduce the necessary legislation.
July 27th, 2007 at 4:21 pmEVEN YOUR OWN MINISTERS,PREACHERS,WHATEVERYOUCALLEMS CAN blindly stir you into a war frenzy.
July 27th, 2007 at 4:23 pmNotice how Hunter retermed it as it as if Korb was saying (quote) “our soldiers are broken. Kean and Hunter try to attack Korb for saying something he never said, and (naturally) completely ignore the point he is making.
We saw this before when Giulliani attacked Ron Paul for supposedly “blaming America for the attacks of 9/11″.
Maybe the problem is Conservativism is a simple hearing disorder? The only difference between a Conservative and a Liberal is a “MiracleEar“???
July 27th, 2007 at 7:56 pmI’m so sick and tired of these idiots like Ducan Hunter sitting on their fat butts and making stupid statements. Mr. Hunter is a moron who knows absolutely nothing about hard combat or hard work. He’s never “Humped” with a pack on his back and rifle in his hand during combat operations. What the fools doesn’t understand is that our soldier may be brave, but they are not robots. They get sick, hurt, see their friends die and have more stress than ordinary people can understand. Just take a minute and think about being blown up, shot at, while you are tired, sweating in over 100 degree heat. This is what our soldiers go through day in and day out. I’ve been through it during combat operations and I can personally tell you it’s no fun. The heat makes it worst because you can’t take time to see realy sweat without worrying about get wasted.
If Hunter and some of the other chicken hawks spent on day in combat with these guys, they cry like a little w(b)itch. When I think back about my experience it still scares me. I still have nightmares about combat and it seems like its real.
July 27th, 2007 at 11:19 pmHunter is the guy who is pushing the building of a 700 mile fence to defend our 2100 mile border with Mexico. He is on the ball.

July 28th, 2007 at 12:01 amIn the 1970s, the Portuguese fascist dictatorship was breaking their own military with a long drawn out and deeply unpopular war. They refused to listen to the generals, and the army stepped in and restored democracy, which has been thriving ever since in Portugal. The parallels between Bush and the Portuguese dictatorship are eerie. No one in their right mind wants a coup, but Bush might want to watch his back.
