Specter breaks Air Force One rules.

By Amanda Terkel on Jul 27th, 2007 at 11:00 am

Specter breaks Air Force One rules.

Guests of President Bush aboard Air Force One are not supposed to “mingle” with the press corps or criticize the President and his team. But yesterday, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) “violated both points of decorum“:

According to a pool report of the encounter, Mr. Specter expressed anew his criticism of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales but said he saw no signs that Mr. Gonzales would be forced to resign. Mr. Specter attributed Mr. Gonzales’s job security to Mr. Bush’s “personal loyalty” to him.

Mr. Specter spoke derisively of Mr. Gonzales’s appearance Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he faced accusations that he misled Congress last year when he said there had been no disagreement within the administration over the National Security Administration’s domestic surveillance program. [...]

Mr. Specter also waded into another uncomfortable subject, the Congressional demands for testimony from Karl Rove, the presidential adviser, and Harriet E. Miers, the former White House counsel, among others.

According to the New York Times, “White House officials seemed none too pleased with Mr. Specter’s remarks.”

Specter’s all bark but no bite.

It’s all a show. He will vote against any attempts to get anything done to Miers, Card or Gonzales.

  3. Boudin Bob says:

Specter boarded the AF1 for a flight that was less than 30 min in the air. Why would he have done that if he didn’t have exactly this kind of a show in mind.

He and GWB had it all planned out.

  4. Egreggious says:

He felt safe criticizing the Administration. He was wearing a parachute.

  5. Marcus Aurelius says:

Specter cannot bring himself to pull the trigger. The man is obviously conflicted – his loyalty to Reagan’s admonition to never speak negatively about another Republican on one hand and his duties as a Senator and Constitutional responsibilities on the other. This lack of ability to act appropriately makes him, by far, the worst player in the Judiciary committee’s floundering efforts to bring this Administration to justice. He has made himself rival to joe Lieberman for the most repugnant of our current politicians.

  8. veritas says:

Specter is a “spectacle” – nothing more. He’s a showman and a Bush puppet. This is all “political theatre”. Specter is simply a “barker” or front man to assuage people’s anger against this cavalier group of renegades running things. His purpose is to “soften the bite” as it were and his charades are becoming pretty trite these days. What will he stoop to next? Breaking decorum?? Well, what do you think about that?? No doubt it’s all part of his usual “dog and pony show” in some way which we’ll soon discover.

I don’t trust Arlan Specter as far as I can throw him!

  11. veritas says:

I think Specter’s purpose now is to attempt to save the GOP from self-destruction and from the obvious tanking which Bush is handily accomplishing by association, that’s all. This was a “plan”- of this I am certain – to have this “concern troll – aka Specter” appear to be outing his own party….again, political theatre designed for the 08 candidates and those whose seats will be vacated and filled by Democrats in 08…..

    Just another typical Specter/Bush spectacle.

  12. veritas says:

Zehava: Don’t buy the “disappointed scam” for a moment. These thugs are in collusion and have been for a long time – Bush 41 and Specter in the Warren commission official story? Puh-lease, folks….don’t fall for this transparent chicanery. It was part of the Bush PR campaign to help the GOP, that’s all.

Watching Republican Senator Arlen Specter challenge Bush administration wrong-doing is like witnessing a failed rocket launch. After the initial furious explosion of hot air, Specter almost immediately loses momentum and never breaks the dark gravitational pull of planet Bush.

    Civilian Inmate Labor Program -

The Civilian Inmate Labor Program is a program of the United States Army provided by Army Regulation 210-35[1]. The regulation, first drafted in 1997 and went under a “rapid act revision” in January 2005, provides policy for the creation of labor programs and prison camps on Army installations. The labor would be provided by persons under the supervision of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

    Prison camps

The regulation also sets forth policy for the creation of prison camps on Army installations. These would be used to keep inmates of the labor programs resident on the installations.

In January 2006, Kellogg, Brown and Root reported that they had received a contract from the Department of Homeland Security to expand ICE DRO facilities “in the event of an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs.”[3] A February news article comments that the “new programs” mentioned could include the Civilian Inmate Labour Program.[4] ICE has “joint federal facilities” with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.[5]

CT Scan is woefully unprepared to discuss the legitimate reasons to “complain” as CT says. None of the more critical threads on TP have been absorbed by Scan.

No bother CT is just another fart in the wind.

  104. Egreggious says:

Lefties should be forfeiting their right to complain when the “blogosphere” is attacked, since you truly have no legit reason to complain.

Bill O’Reilly is an idiot. It’s just an observation, not a complaint.

Yeah they want you to think it’s a “vacation, but a 1.5-week hiatus is only enough time, I would say, to do some final prep for the full 16-week term ahead of you. You might be able to fit in a wait in line at Starbucks, though. Who knows?

Good luck with your ending coursework. I’m sure you’ll do fine.

    Thanks!

I’ll be here periodically throughout the day today as well, for I am writing my term paper.

Only 1 more week until my 1.5 week summer vacation!

    I can’t wait!

    Comment by Mr. President

Better knock it off, PiPPy. CT doesn’t approve of this kind of irrelevant chit-chat and he will call you on it.

    Oh, wait.

I must have misunderstood. CT doesn’t approve of this kind of chit-chat when anyone but he and his fellow trolls do it on a daily basis.

    I’ve got it now.

You are probably right bilgobaggins but this act shows there are chinks in the bush armor. Having a republican dissing Gonzo on AF1 is a big deal.

CT, if it bothers you so much ignore it, combat it or leave. But show facts to support opinions if you decide to combat it. That’s how true arguments work. Not “oh yeah, says you” crap that goes on.

If this was true, you would have dropped the whole subject when she suggested moving personal discussions to Facebook, but what you did instead was to continue to attack her personally. You’re a complete hypocrite, CT.

Think Progressive is a progressive blog, and your attempts to reshape it into your own personal playground is vain and childish.

Specter’s no fool he has to talk the talk for the people back home who are sick of the White House lies. Now Specter will say how bad all this is but let the White House know he will not do anything to remove the lying Attorney General. The people of Specters State are wise to the fact that he in up to his neck in this corruption of the White House. Specter is just giving a show and hopes the people of PA. believe he’s really working for them. Gonzales is safe with Specter and he knows it that why he was laughing during the hearing. All these Republicans will say one thing and do what their told by the White House. It’s called brought and paid for GOP.

  128. hellinabucket says:

This “Protocol” sounds a bit childish that nothing bad can be said on AF1. If the truth hurts but is still the truth a grown man would get over it and probably learn from the truth.

Not going to happen until GW is no longer president.

  129. J Lewd says:

Way to go, Arlen. He should have broke a third by taking a big, steaming crap on Bushit’s private conference table — let ‘im know what you REALLY think, Senator. . . .

  130. NCBlueneck says:

This “decorum” crap sounds like nine year old boys barring the “icky girls” from their “secret club house”. What? we now have rules for addressing the servant of “We the People” like he was Queen Elizabeth, or something? He’s not royalty. (Royal pain in the a$$, maybe…)

  131. lurker says:

Didn’t Arlen’s aid make the change to the Patreerot act to bypass
    congress on appointments?

  132. Arroyo says:

Decorum? Who cares? At least Spector didn’t barf on a foreign dignitary like Bush 1 did.

  133. SSBrownsville says:

Since when is one not allowed to criticize the President or his policies on ‘his’ plane? Last time I checked, it was MY tax dollars that paid for that plane, probably as much if not more than Mr. Bush’s, & I’m perfectly willing to have people criticize him on it. When is he going to realize he’s not a God, but just one of us people, & take his lumps like the rest of us.

  134. The Oracle says:

Sorry, this just seems too contrived…that is, Arlen Specter doing what he did on Air Force One.

One would almost think that Specter was a “maverick” Republican, one who puts our country and our Constitution above all the neo-con Republcan machinations, and yet time and again he has proven that he toes the White House party line when push comes to shove and he actually votes.

This is why I said it sounds like Specter’s hobnobbing with the press pool on Air Force One sounds contrived. First, he wouldn’t have been talking to them unless he’d been told to talk to them, since we all know what control freaks there are in the Bush administration, which I’m certain goes doubly on Air Force One. Second, he was also told what to say to them, giving the impression that he isn’t a White House “made man” when his voting record proves he is.

Thus, my guess is that the White House political wing on Air Force One ordered Specter to go talk to the press and handed him a prepared script, or they’d throw him off Air Force One…at 35,000 feet…without a parachute…so he obeyed.

  135. O. Bigfoot says:

“Guests of President Bush aboard Air Force One are not supposed to “mingle” with the press corps or criticize the President and his team.

Where’s the law that says that? That sounds a bit like an infringement of Free Speech.

Hey, Chimpy. That’s not your jet. That’s OUR jet, jackass.

You folks are the ones being childish, and this is a childish “news” story. The President decides who flys with him, and he can tell Specter to catch the next plane if he wants to. “You dance with the one who brung you..”

Didn’t your momma’s teach you any manners? It’s called being polite.

It someone riding with me wants to debate ME while I’m driving somewhere, that’s fine, but if someone criticsizes me to third parties while riding in my car, they’re walking from there. I hope they’re wearing comfortable shoes.

Air Force One is a privilege of the office of President. It is available at the President’s sole discretion.

For those of you who have the attitude that “my tax dollars pay for Air Force One, so it’s OUR jet!”, I challenge you to attempt to barge onboard next time Air Force One is at an airport near you. Tell ‘em it’s “our” plane, and you want to ride with the President to his next destination.

Do that, and then report back how it works out for you…we’ll understand if it’s a few years before we hear from you again.

  136. owlbear1 says:

Abject Devotion to authority, we get it.

  137. Deano says:

I don’t understand why people keep attributing Bush’s commitment to keep Gonzales on board as due to a “personal loyalty” Bush has toward Gonzales. Come on! Loyalty has little to do with the motivations of this administration. Gonzales provides critical cover for Bush. Bush insists on keeping Gonzales because of the risks he and others in his administration would face if Gonzales was fired and a new person replaced him…someone who might not be so committed to obfuscating, distorting and denying the truth to protect the Commander in Chief. If it was more disadvantageous to keep Gonzales on board, Bush would jettison him in a heartbeat, loyalty or not.
