CNN Calls Republicans’ Bluff, Reschedules YouTube Debate

cnnyou.gif On July 23, all eight Democratic presidential candidates participated in the CNN/YouTube debate. By uploading a 30-second video to YouTube, “voters could directly question a presidential candidate during the debate.” Steve Grove, YouTube’s news and politics editor, called this new debate format “more democratic than ever.”

Yet so far, just three Republican presidential candidates — Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), and as of yesterday, Tommy Thompson — have confirmed that they will participate in the Sept. 17 debate.

Both former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney have said that they have scheduling conflicts. CNN has called their bluff. The website for Republican presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) reports today that CNN has postponed the September debate:

We received word yesterday that the CNN/YouTube/Florida GOP presidential candidates debate scheduled for September 17 has been postponed. A new date has yet to be determined.

ThinkProgress spoke with the Paul campaign today, who confirmed that CNN contacted them and said that it is rescheduling the debate. The campaign said that it believes it was done to accommodate the schedules of the other candidates. Earlier today, the New York Times reported that CNN “said it would work with the campaigns to find a new date.”

It’s unclear whether the other candidates will actually participate in the rescheduled debate. Romney recently mocked the debate, stating, “I think the presidency ought to be held at a higher level than having to answer questions from a snowman,” referring to a citizen dressed as a snowman who submitted a question about global warming.

  1. VerbalKint says:

They won’t participate. The sniveling cowards will come up with one ridiculous excuse or other to dodge the debate. Given how stupid their drooling base is, the excuse doesn’t even have to make sense.

  2. Notwhoyouthink says:

Why are most of the g.o.p. candidates afraid of Youtube? Senator Allen, are you there?

  3. Notwhoyouthink says:

Fear strikes the hearts of all g.o.p ers who can’t control their “media” images.
Read Joe McGinnis: “The Selling of the President”: it outlines Nixon’s run in 1968. . . nothing has changed (although many argue it’s much worse).

  4. Arn Gunnutes says:

    No SCRIPTS???

HOW could they POSSIBLY “debate” without them??

  5. spencers mom says:

You know what? F*UCK ‘EM! Hold the debate, have empty podiums for the chicken-sh*t debate dodgers, televise the YouTube questions directed to the missing, and have 30 seconds of silence.

That would be just as good as the “out of my a$$” answers JulieAnnie and Mutt would give anyway.

    PEACE

  6. AngryOne says:

As their empty podiums at the recent NAACP convention attest, like the current Oval Office occupant these Republicans apparently have no stomach for authentic, unscripted questions from the American people.

    For the details, see:
“GOP Candidates to Add YouTube Event to NAACP Boycott?”

  7. Arn Gunnutes says:

    From the Romney/YouTube thread:

If they can’t stand up to Youtube, how can the voters think any GOP wannabes can stand up Al Queda?

Even with the TouTube angle, the debates are still pretty dull. Baseball understood this kind of problem when it instituted inter-league play. Republican vs. republican or Democrat vs. Democrat = Who cares; but Hillary vs. Rudy or Obama vs. Mitt = Vavoom — Pow!

At a minimum, if the republican debate is Ron P and Saint John, I hope some of the Democratic hopefuls send in videos. What kind of audience share could you get for Gravel vs. Paul? It takes my breath away.

“Why are most of the g.o.p. candidates afraid of Youtube? Senator Allen, are you there?”

Well, it isn’t Youtube, per se, it is actual people. They are very afraid of the electorate because if they told the truth 71% of the people would never vote for them. They live on slick commercials and cheap sound bites. Don’t expect them to actually go do a fireside chat…it would just show what pigs they are.

  13. JPark says:

Ugh, interleague play is a nightmare. Not only do our esteemed NL teams have to play with DH’s when away (something they don’t and shouldn’t prepare for as it is an abomination to the game) but there is very little decent debate over which league is better because of the head to head results.

  14. JPark says:

“What kind of audience share could you get for Gravel vs. Paul? It takes my breath away.”

That was funny. A 0.01 share is breathtaking :)

  15. tarazan says:

#2 -You are right, the memory of Youtube and Senator Allen defeat scared these GOP candidates to death.
After Allen defeat, they don’t want to be face to face with YouTube…It is a nightmare for them, it is the killer.

Ron Pual has nothing to fear; McCain & T. Thompson have nothing to lose.

  16. upside00 says:

Guess we won’t be subjected to all those middle-age white guys scrambling to answer questions that they weren’t prepared for. And I wonder how many times they would STILL get the words “ronnie ragunz” inserted.

  18. JPark says:

  19. veritas says:

I suspect the Republican candidates fear YouTube and the concept of extemporaneous answers to surprise questions is the mere fact that the combined Intelligence Quotient of the entire group still falls short of any of the front-runner Democrats. The Republican group of incompetents need to be scared, really scared when it comes to presenting something not rehearsed and practiced a hundred times on the campaign trail. It was laughable when they railroaded Matthews and overruled his line of questioning – suffusing it with such obvious talking points and campaign rhetoric. It was actually quite painful to even watch such a charade.

  20. tarazan says:

YouTube questions will not enable them to sell their ‘family values’ schemes.

  21. veritas says:

Certainly if the electorate would be posing serious questions about any of the issues critical to this campaign (which they definitely would) the paltry group of Gophers would be at a total loss for a palatable answer. The fact is that most of them have already said too much about their platform and philosophies which run counter to now about 70+% of americans.

It’s really becoming irrelevant to even see what these guys have to say at this point because, other than Ron Paul, they’re all in lockstep Reichwing formation and the people will have no more of it.

  22. varnst says:

    #18……You may be correct.

  23. veritas says:

tarazan: I’m wondering what “family values” any Republican would have to sell today. I think their reputations speak louder than words and with the daily scandals engulfing the GOP, the people already know that their level of personal morality and family values are mere words – meaningless words. Actions speak louder than words and by their actions, they’ve pretty much shown the people that they’re bona fide hypocrites.

    Spot on. There ARE intelligent people in the Rapeublican party;

the problem is that they feed on the FEARS and EMOTIONS of the morons who vote for them.

You DON’T go to WAR on logic.

You whip the country up into a frenzy of FEAR and EMOTION.

Right out of the Nazi playbook, “improved” by Karl Rove…

  25. veritas says:

Guiliani will whimp out regardless of the change in date. So will Romney. Guiliani doesn’t want to answer the abortion question and Romney doesn’t wish to discuss Mormonism.

  26. varnst says:

Nor does Guiliani want to see a fireman ask him anything whatsoever about his so called planning abilities.

  27. veritas says:

Ann: And “whipped like prostrate subjects we were”! The fear mongering coupled with he wave of patriotism following 911 was the perfect synchronization of emotions for us to permit ourselves to be enslaved. Benjamin Franklin (I think) said: If a man trades his freedoms for the illusion of safety, then he deserves neither. This is precisely what we’ve done in allowing the enemy within to swiftly and deliberately use our constitution for their personal toilet paper.

The one thing I run on is faith though and I have no doubt that the people, awakening from the dark, deep miasma of corrupiton which has overwhelmed their internal logic, will prevail. The ball is rolling and will ultimately rest in the hands of the people who will bring these criminals to the justice they deserve.

  28. veritas says:

Nor does Guiliani want to answer the question of what the FEMA people were doing setting things up in his City on September 10 either!

Of course, Giuliani’s command center was brought in lock, stock and barrel a day or two beforehand (wink wink). You know Giuliani, our “hero” – the next “annointed one” – (wink wink).

  32. veritas says:

  35. JPark says:

  37. RandyH says:

I think we should start calling them out for their elitism. They’re too important to take questions from the unwashed masses that they try and pander to for votes?

Bad choice of description here. You are insulting that which I love the most. Frankly, I like the word coward. Its not scat, but I think its worse. IMO, it doesn’t get much lower. Even an A**hole has some form of value or dignaty.

  51. JPark says:

It is all good, though. If I were a Republican I wouldn’t want to answer questions on racial equality either.

  52. JPark says:

Merlin, I agree that pu$$y should be a positive but it isn’t in coloquial American English. It is accepted that the word means wimp, coward, Republican, chickenhawk, gutless wiener. Just the way it is.

  53. tarazan says:

    #41- Jay Randal
[....He is a hypocrite in that he loves war,but his six grown sons are NOT serving in the military. He claims they are busy working for his church]
    ———————————————
During Viet Nam Romney enrolled in a Mormon missionary in France, for several years, after getting a 4-D MISSIONARY EXEMPTION
It was allowed then because he was a state of Michigan residence, with a small percentage of Mormons,he had little competition to get his deferment.
His father was the governor of Michigan.

So working for church is not a new reason given, with regard to his sons and war in Iraq
    It has been used before.

  54. Merlin says:

    Comment by JPark — July 28, 2007 @ 11:19 pm

I agree with you. Never the less, coward is 10 times stronger and fits the description of these chickenhawks much better. After all, you can be brushed off when you call someone a scat name. There is no writing it off, when you are called a coward. Like calling a spade a spade. There is no where for the coward to run. He has to face the charge.

  55. JPark says:

tarazan, just because it has been used before doesn’t make him less of a hypocrite. He supports the war (and I am guessing the rest of his family) while his kids are busy impregnating poor, African women. I apologize, the rich mormons get Italy or France to do their “missionary” style…er, work.

  56. Frank J says:

  57. JPark says:

I disagree, Merlin, coward has never phased a right winger. It rolls off of them like water on a ducks back. I don’t know if my word is more effective as it has never convinced one of them to join up so maybe all words are useless. Except maybe Pat Tillman’s words. Snivelling (not sure what he said) got him killed by his own.

  58. JPark says:

So their answer is to become bold face liars and give the American public the finger while daring us to do something about it. They keep pushing the limits and doing what they want.

  103. Frank J says:

The left would never gone into Afghanistan even after 9/11. There is nothing in your behavior before or after the attack of September 11 that shows you would have. If you would have done the opposite that would have meant more bombs and going into Pakistan to cut off escape routes with more troops. Given again the history of liberalism and how it has acted since the attack of 9/11 this is either wishful thinking or simply the left acting tough as long as someone else is making the decisions.

The United States armed the Northern Alliance not the Taliban they were funded by Saudi Arabia. No charge for that historical fact.

It would seem that most of the YouTube questions come from the younger population and tend to lean Democratic. I’m not sure why the other candidates aside from R. Paul, McCain, and Thompson are reluctant to jump in.

Even with the Democratic YouTube debate, I was disappointed that no one bother to address the collapsing dollar or major trade deficits. In fact, the only question I recall touching upon economic issues was regarding minimum wage. You can count that by mid 2008, the big issues will involve the economy including the collapsing housing bubble and deflating dollar.

Clinton Let Bin Laden Slip Away and Metastasize

Sudan offered up the terrorist and data on his network. The then-president and his advisors didn’t respond.

    By MANSOOR IJAZ

President Clinton and his national security team ignored several opportunities to capture Osama bin Laden and his terrorist associates, including one as late as last year.

I know because I negotiated more than one of the opportunities.

From 1996 to 1998, I opened unofficial channels between Sudan and the Clinton administration. I met with officials in both countries, including Clinton, U.S. National Security Advisor Samuel R. “Sandy” Berger and Sudan’s president and intelligence chief. President Omar Hassan Ahmed Bashir, who wanted terrorism sanctions against Sudan lifted, offered the arrest and extradition of Bin Laden and detailed intelligence data about the global networks constructed by Egypt’s Islamic Jihad, Iran’s Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas.

Among those in the networks were the two hijackers who piloted commercial airliners into the World Trade Center.

The silence of the Clinton administration in responding to these offers was deafening.

As an American Muslim and a political supporter of Clinton, I feel now, as I argued with Clinton and Berger then, that their counter-terrorism policies fueled the rise of Bin Laden from an ordinary man to a Hydra-like monster.

Realizing the growing problem with Bin Laden, Bashir sent key intelligence officials to the U.S. in February 1996.

The Sudanese offered to arrest Bin Laden and extradite him to Saudi Arabia or, barring that, to “baby-sit” him–monitoring all his activities and associates.

But Saudi officials didn’t want their home-grown terrorist back where he might plot to overthrow them.

Sudan offered up the terrorist and data on his network. The then-president and his advisors didn’t respond.

And what did Bubba tell the 9/11 Commission about this? From their report…

President Clinton, in a February 2002 speech to the Long Island Association, said that the United States did not accept a Sudanese offer and take Bin Ladin because there was no indictment. President Clinton speech to the Long Island Association, Feb. 15, 2002 (videotape of speech). But the President told us that he had “misspoken” and was, wrongly, recounting a number of press stories he had read. After reviewing this matter in preparation for his Commission meeting, President Clinton told us that Sudan never offered to turn Bin Ladin over to the United States.President Clinton meeting (Apr.8, 2004). Berger told us that he saw no chance that Sudan would have handed Bin Ladin over and also noted that in 1996, the U.S. government still did not know of any al Qaeda attacks on U.S. citizens. Comment by jules — July 29, 2007 @ 2:28 am

Show me where I said it’s ok to call for poisoning anyone. As for likening liberals to Nazis, I think all conservatives collectively are way behind TP liberals doing the same with conservatives. Perhaps we should omit that one. I agree with some of Coulter’s, Limbaugh’s and O’Reilly’s positions just as I agree with some of Obermann’s and Hillary’s. You made a sarcastic remark, so I responded with one. Seems fair and balanced. ;)

Your heros are thugs, your dogma is tired, your party is toast.

  197. Gabejedmo says:

    Dear fellow progressives,

If you’ll indulge me while I digress from the topic at hand, I have a little story to tell. A couple days ago I visited the site RedState.com, just to see, for once, what they were saying on the other side of the blogosphere. It was basically what you would expect. But at the same time, I’ll admit, it was a mite intriguing. Here I was cavorting with the enemy, so to speak.

So, for the fun of it I decided to enter the fray and join the discussion. I commented. I blogged with abandon. I danced and weaved my arguments with great passion, and paried when attacked, which was often. It was just what I was in the mood for. All was going so well, I almost forgot about the potential pitfalls…

And then, it happened. I was banned. Upon trying to login at one point, I was informed that my username was blocked or deactivated. My heart sank. I couldn’t believe it. Surely this was a mistake. They weren’t actually THAT petty and cowardly, were they? But sadly, apparently it was so.

But I had experienced such heights of joy, I couldn’t surrender so easily….I quickly created a new email address, and lickity-split I was back in action, blogging merrily away amongst the hordes of Fox-defenders and Bush-lovers, defying their simplistic arguments with actual evidence and critical thinking.

This was where I wanted to be! This was my calling! Maybe, just maybe, I could manage to turn one or two away from the ravages of Darth Cheney, and give them a glimpse of the light! Yes, I would show them the truth, and they would love me for it!!

But no, it was not meant to be. It happened again. After successfully sending through a particularly witty comment, I went on to write yet another, satisfying those deep urges like only blogging can. And then I was denied. My comment failed to be posted this time. I was informed, once again, that my username was no longer recognized, barely an hour after it had been created.

But it was even worse than that, my friends–much worse. I can barely even speak (errr…blog..) the words. So I’ll just shout it out loud, for all to hear. I tried to reload their homepage, to see if at least my previous comments still remained, only to encounter……stark whiteness. Nothing. A mysterious, unrelenting vaccuum staring out at me. THEY BLOCKED MY COMPUTER!!!!!!!! The horror!!

Seriously, they blocked my computer from entering their site whatsoever. And no, folks, I was not using loads of four-letter words, threatening people with metaphorical uzis, or suggesting (like, for example, Bill O’Reilly once, on the air) that terrorists attacking a certain American city would be just fine. No, I was simply blogging away as bloggers do, opinionated and possibly annoying, but not much worse than that. But apparently, if you don’t follow in single-file behind their right-wing credo, then you are not allowed to exist in their corner of the blogosphere.

So, my fellow progressives, liberals, dems, rebels-with-a-cause, I’m calling for action. If you feel the call, go to RedState.com. And……blog! Comment! Opine! Because, apparently, that is what they fear most.

And by the way, if you happen to be curious who this offending liberal is (because my comments might still be up there, they were from my first username) it’s gabejedmo (or else gabejedmo1, my second username). Look around and you may find the faded shadow of my ghost lurking in the corners of that website, somewhat dejected, but certainly not down for the count. I’m simply keeping my profile low; awaiting the most auspicious time to come forth again and make my presence known. Because, god willing, I shall not cower in vain. I will not be pushed around by people in suits and ties, and pants-suits, and pants-ties (huh?), with perfectly-cropped side-burns, and glaringly-white teeth, and expensive watches, and fancy, silken underwear, and….well, whatever right-wingers wear. I will be back…I WILL BE BACK!!!

But, if not, maybe you will redeem me, stand up for freedom and help fight against the voices of tyranny (seriously) and blog a little for me. RedState.com. Check it out. And let them feel the wrath (but in a generally polite sorta way) of the liberal.

If you haven’t yet noticed you have found an avenue into mainstream politics. I beg if you not to lose this chance, and to be the bigger person, to rise above sticks and stones and let ideas, truly great thoughts, bubble up into your minds and out onto this forum. I have tried hard to bring a religious/progressive equilibrium into the mix using Socrates to Jesus to modern physics.

The world is not as we knew it thru our history books, none of them even imagined the internet or its effect on humanity. Do not let this chance pass you by. Use this medium as a means to foment change and not to foment divisive speech. The worlds future depends on it. Mr Soros has graciously given you a forum for your words to be heard.

Use that chance, speak of your dreams of the future and how we can obtain world peace How can we accomplish world trade, how can we find an alternative to oil? How can we?

Liberals are but peaceful and compassionate Americans Gabe. I hope that we can show the world that no terrorist can deny us our unity. We are just and do not wish to occupy, we wish to help others become independent nations that contribute to the earth as a whole.

We are all Earths children. Let us become universal!

  200. Bruce Gorton says:

What number of dead American civilians do you want to see before your ideology would act, seems 3,000 was not high enough or was it because you lost no friends or loved ones in that attack that you are indifferent to Islamo Fascism, explain your idiocy.

    Comment by Frank J — July 28, 2007 @ 11:53 pm

First of all: Most liberals agreed with the war in Afghanistan – which is where Osama Bin Laden was.

Second of all: The war in Iraq allowed the guy behind 3000 American civilian deaths to escape scot free.

Third of all: Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Not a single one of the hijackers came from Iraq, Saddam Hussein was a very firm enemy of Osama Bin Laden, and, finally the thing which triggered Osama’s feud with America in the first place was Saudi Arabian nationalism: He objected to the US having bases in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is a long time enemy of Iraq and Iran (Names sound familiar?)

Fourth of all: The Iraq war has allowed Al Qaeada to regain its old strength, weakened America’s alliances with the rest of the world (Consequently, weakening America) and dealt a severe blow to America’s ability to react to natural disasters (Such as, for example, Katrina. One of the major issues during that disaster was that needed emergency vehicles and personell were over in Iraq.)

Fifth of all: You are a chicken hawk. You are the precise type of person who praises the manliness of supporting a war, and then refuses to sign up. You steal the “glory” of people who actually earned some degree of recognition in that regard, and then make up excuses when someone asks you why you didn’t join, or you just lie about it and claim that you did.

You are that worst species of coward, a coward to afraid to admit his cowardice who in a serious stress situation is likely to crack and shoot at your own forces because “It just wasn’t meant to be this way.” This translates itself into your foreign policy, where you take the approach of shooting first and asking questions later.

You have no grounds to talk about the personal courage of any of the posters here, because you have no personal courage yourself.

  201. Bruce Gorton says:

Here I was, innocently calling Frank a coward and pointing out that Iraq has nothing to do with defending America, and boom, there is my argument gone.

    Ah well.

Back on topic: There is a very good reason why the Republicans don’t want to go on Youtube. The Republicans are basically evil, and thus when the false consensus they use to bull their way into power fails, their whole party falls.

  202. Perry Logan says:

    YouTube, ShmooTube.

It doesn’t matter what the Republicans do. The Democrats could run a dog for President and still win.

  203. OutSourced says:

Mr. Romney thinks it preferable to answer questions from a gay prostitute with a permanent day pass to the White House? That gives “turning the other cheek” a whole new meaning.

I think I’d prefer the pretend snowman, melting away because of unattended to global warming than a real gay prostitute with no journalism credentials. I know that Cheney considers all reporters whores, he and Rove have bought and paid for many of them. But most of us assumed he was speaking figuratively, extending a courtesy to those in a profession comparable to his own.

As a GOP member I find such delays from Rudy and Mitt to be in contempt of the American People… It appears Mitt and Rudy would have the public belive they are more important then a planned youTUBE debate. Thats ok it just helps win over new votes to Paul. I suggest let the debate go as planned and if Mitt and Rudy can change plans they thats fine then they can be a part. For sure Rudy would not answer my questions in a small gathering about the recent IMF report.

Mitt and Rudy are sending the wrong message to the people of the us by not keeping the dates. For this reason may the party continue without Rudy and Mitt

  209. Arroyo says:

    Just checking.

You, of the slavery party, the party that would keep minorities in their place beholden to you forever rather than strong and independent. Ya need to check your history, bud. Each party has it’s good guys and bad. I readily acknowledge the immoral and crooked in my party, how about you? ;)

This will be great for Dr. Ron Paul! I’ve never been so excited about voting for a candidate, I love his message and it’s spreading like wild fire across the country!! This will be the perfect chance to hear him talk more about his views in front of a massive audience!

A large part of the videos on youtube seem to involve people who are drunk, drugged or just plain stupid. Yeah, that’s who I want to hear posing questions to presidential candidates. Maybe the candidates can also appear in sweats and dirty t-shirts to make themselves more appealing to “the masses.” ;)

there will not be a debate at all, if the “big 3″ (not my big 3) decide not to show up. CNN will cancel, and here will be CNN’s response, “The debate looses all credibility if the front runners will not participate. ”

Rudy Giuliani, Mitt Romney, know it and plan on it, and John McCain has no leverage left.

It’s all a bunch of CRAP! I Boo the process.

    Go Ron Paul!!!

  235. Rob Alexander says:

What are so-called top-tier Republicans afraid of?

    Two words: Ron Paul.

  236. atvdude says:

It would just be nice to see the supposed “Top Tier” debate Dr. Ron Paul again. I suspect that that as much as the questions likely to be posed by “real folks” during the youtube.com debate are what is making this whole event distasteful.

How sad democracy has come to this… How glad I am to see many of you realizing that the Bush Admin as well as the Dem leadership has been selling FEAR to the American public… with plenty of help from main stream media.. WHO STILL insists on just giving voice to just ONE opinon on Iraq and on the FUTURE OF AMERICA..
Its time to BROADEN THE DEBATE… FREEDOM & LIBERTY IS A GOOD MESSAGE

  237. David says:

wow they want to be president, but are afraid to go up against little old RON. That is truely confidence inspiring. Ron’s message is strong and clear and the “top tier” guys have not a chance to win this debate.
