Barry Bonds’ Homerun Race Puts Bush’s Steroids Record In The Spotlight

bushrangerWith 754 career home runs, San Francisco Giants slugger Barry Bonds is one shy of tying the revered home run record set by Hall of Famer Hank Aaron. Bonds’ record will be “tainted by allegations he used steroids.”

In an interview with ESPN’s Karl Ravech earlier this month, President Bush was asked for his take on the Bonds situation. “You know, it’s hard for me to tell,” Bush said. Echoing a line he uttered in the early stages of the CIA leak scandal, Bush said he was waiting for the facts. “I know there’s a lot of implications, my advice is for people just to wait and see what the facts are,” he said.

An avid baseball fan who watches games in the Oval Office to relax, Bush refused to say whether he would watch Bonds’ record-setting homerun if he were the baseball commissioner. “You know, I don’t know, I have my mind elsewhere these days,” he said.

Sports columnist Skip Bayless — who was previously a sports journalist in Dallas — said on ESPN that the Bonds situation is difficult for Bush to discuss because he looked the other way on steroids use as manager of the Rangers:

I was there in Texas during those years, and I knew the President when he was owner of the Rangers. And I heard all the whispers around the locker room and the clubhouse. … I think he looked the other way. I’m sure George heard them also and looked the other way. … I think they [baseball commissioner Bud Selig and Bush] believe that Barry Bonds used steroids.

Watch a compilation:

President Bush was managing general partner of the Texas Rangers from 1989 until he was elected Texas governor in 1994. Several former Rangers — Ivan Rodriguez, Juan Gonzalez, Rafael Palmiero, and Jose Canseco — are all alleged to have used, or have admitted to using, steroids while playing for Bush.

Canseco authored a book about the prevalence of steroids in baseball during the early 90s and argued the Bush must have known about the drug use in the clubhouse. Bush has denied that he was aware of the steroid problem.

Should Bonds break the home run record sometime this week, Bush will face the question of whether or not he should call to congratulate the new all-time home run king and give legitimacy to a tainted record. It should be noted, however, that his hands are hardly clean on the issue.

“This is a game that Iraq won, and I hope Bush won’t now say, look, I made them win that match,” a member of the Iraqi Olympics Federation in Baghdad, speaking on condition of anonymity, told IPS.

“He did it once and we hated him even more for that because it was our boys who won despite the miserable support we are getting from the Americans and our government,” he said. He was referring to the claim by U.S. President George W. Bush in August 2004 that the Iraqi football success in the Olympics was proof that the U.S.-led occupation was benefiting Iraq.

um, there are enough legit Bush disasters to dissect and grapple with without having to make such weak and tenuous connections as this. Barry Bonds is also a big enough egotistical a** without needing to throw Bush into the mix. What the hell is going on with this site over the past couple of days?

Owners are silenced by the league, you libs. should be on Bush’s side on this one.

By the way Bush was not the “Manager”.

This post is just another mark in the progressive loss column.

    *Yawn*

Athletes taking steroids is equivalent to actors or models having plastic surgery. They are just responding to want their fans ideals of what they should look like and how they should perform. Does it really amount to anything significant? Expecting entertainers or athletes to be squeaky clean roll models is just plain stupid. Especially athletes as they produce nothing of lasting value. It’s just mindless entertainment and bread and circus to keep the masses distracted. All the attention absorbed by hyped up steroid scandals serves the interests of the Bush regime as it crowds out real news and distracts the public from being concerned about policies that really effect our lives.

As an example of how this is just a phony hyped up distraction, I just listened to NPR do a ten minute report on Bonds and steroids. In that time they could have reported on many things of importance that are essential for the public to know to be fully informed participants in a democratic society. If you don’t like athletes taking steroids, I suggest that you stop feeding into this national distraction and spend your money on something else more important.

So, instead of being innocent untill proven guilty, Bonds is guilty by gossip and speculation. Like I said, he has never been tested positive and has never been caught with illegal steroids.

Don’t get me wrong, steroids should be illegal and anyone using in sports should be banned from the sport. Steroids are dangerous when abused.
That said, the docs used steroids on me when after my leg surgeries ( my right leg bones were shattered in Desert Storm) they were rebuild my atrophied muscles in my legs. So steroids when used properly have their place in medicine.

This country has really gone to crap in the last 6 years, and it is not just the Republicans. Everyone is guilty, except your selected party and the people you support.

    real nice.

When Bonds is tested positive or is found guilty in a court of law, then I can jump on that bandwagon.

Until then this is a crap story.

BTW, now NPR is doing another steroid report, this time on that bike race in France. That makes about 20 minutes of airtime, about 1/4 of the hour long program, devoted to this topic. With all that’s going on these days, I find that an absurd priority for a news show to dedicate so much time to.

Outside of the context of discussing steroids I could accept your statement as a blanket statement about the state of sports in this country and how people should consume them. As you say, “stop patronizing professional sports” if you can’t take the reality. No problem.

When abused steroids endanger the lives of others, including those on and off the field, then I will begin “[...] patronizing professional sports” again. Until then I will shout my lungs out at those who make such cavalier statements as yours. Zooey, TRoS,

I would love to have “Total Troll Silence” but…

I used to post a list of known trolls here on a regular basis a couple of years ago. It was not really accepted or supported and the trolls started creating lots of new id’s to post under. Consider the following:

    1) How fast can you identify a troll?

    2) How do you verify you have a positive hit?

    3) If you know you have a troll, what will TP or the regulars do about?

    4) If we attempt to keep a list of trolls here amoung ourselves how do we arbitrate the disputes? I might be accused of being a troll someday or wrongly accusing another of being a troll someday. I’m way, way, way less than perfect.

I have more questions. I’ll put those off for now.

BTW, my first experiment at keeping and posting a troll list here and what I learned could earn anyone a PhD in Social Science!!!

Yeah, I agree. Some of the trolls are impossible to much of anything w/.
I do like the ones dumb enough to “debate the facts”. Ya can make mincemeat of them. But by and large, if one of them wants to be obnoxious, there’s not much you can do, other than leave for the time being. Free speech may be just that – free, but it ain’t always pretty!

Probably not, but it would transfer the stress onto THEM, instead of US.

And sometimes we can’t identify a troll right away, but as soon as we realize what it is — freeze out.

They still have the freedom to post here, but we simply do not acknowledge them. I know, it’s the impossible dream….

  123. TripMaster Monkey says:

    The Republic of Stupidity sez:

    Would it work?

The reason we have the trolls we have is because we have developed a habit of responding to them. When you don’t respond to trolls, they begin to post clever lies, (like Exley & Seixon) secure in the knowledge that their lies won’t be refuted. When one ignores these trolls, one only validates their flawed arguments.

Here, we haven’t been letting those lies go unchallenged. As a result, trolls like Exley and Seixon have disappeared in favor of trolls like Mr. Pee and Jingo…trolls whose only purpose is to derail debate with hateful nonsense. When one challenges these trolls, one only validates their time-wasting bullsh!t.

So, you can see that we have a bit of a tightrope to walk here.

But keep on blaming someone without proof. That’s your right of free speech and thought.

“… could earn anyone a PhD in Social Science!!!” No joke!

It seems pretty easy to spot a troll. Every now and then one eases into the conversation quietly, but most of them come thru the door as loudly as possible. I like this new one – BrassBalls, or Mask, or whatever he calls himself. He had a clever little tack, calling us gremlins and saying he had to clean up the site.

It seems pretty easy to tell whether they’re male or female. I don’t recall seeing too many female trolls, BTW. It was actually kind of creepy when Mr P (I think) switched genders the other night and pretended he was Sally H. Very bizarre.

Friday afternoon, someone hijacked my name while I was here. It was like that old episode of Batman where the Riddler gets doubled and even he can’t tell which is which. Whoever did that also was hijacking other names vry quickly at one point.

And then, every now and then, you can actually bust a troll down, and they become real people. Cynicon Implant was like that last week, unless it was an act. He had been coming here and being rude, and we busted his chops so badly that he just dropped the act and started talking to us. Kind of interesting, actually, if it was real.

  128. dixie blood says:

    Comment by TripMaster Monkey — July 29, 2007 @ 7:51 pm

    Right on point.

In addition, an unrefuted point will be lifted by the reich-wing dirty tricks people to prove that “lefty” sites are filled with hatred, etc. At the very least a response to a useless reich-wing comment can be cited later if needed. I think we have to post against their nonsense.

  129. Zooey says:

So, you can see that we have a bit of a tightrope to walk here.
    Comment by TripMaster Monkey — July 29, 2007 @ 7:51 pm

You’re right, TMM, some of them do take advantage of our silence, and we can’t allow that.

I’m talking more about Mr Pee & friends, michael, m12, Brass whatever, Patrick1, etc. Those types who either aren’t even smart, or are simply here to disrupt threads with inane crap.

  130. Egreggious says:

IMHO, there are those rare occasions where trolls actually stimulate the conversation. Some of the responses actually teach me things I didn’t know.

If someone offers a serious and defensible argument, I don’t mind engaging them. Unfortunately, it usually degenerates into utter nonsense.

This is going to get me in a lot of trouble, but I think Pee has a good sense of humor a lot of times. I just think he gets a little carried away. I actually prefer a little humor to endless repetitions of the same left-wing talking points, or the frantic, emotional, and continuous calls for impeachment, consisting of nothing but hand-wringing and despair.

Don’t poo-poo the wine boxes…the bag inside the box collapses as the wine is dispensed, keeping air out, which keeps the wine nice and fresh. :)

    (Not that I’m a big wine drinker…I’m a beer-man myself, but I went through a big wine phase in college. =P )

  165. bilbobaggins says:

“When one ignores these trolls, one only validates their flawed arguments.”

I hate to say this, but that is really a dumb statement. Who is going to believe their flawed arguments. There really are, from what I can see, two camps. One camp is the progressives who come here to discuss ideas and sometimes just to vent. The second camp is the trolls who come here to fling feces in our face to see if they can get us to react. Now, if they say something that is a “flawed argument”, what is it going to do? Is it going to change the opinions of group one, I think not. Is it going to change the opinions of group two, no, because group two is the one throwing out the “flawed argument”.

So, I really don’t see anything to gain by correcting them in their “flawed argument” and everything to lose. Why can’t the people here just freeze the trolls out. Just don’t talk to them, don’t react to them. I’m willing to do it if everyone else here is willing. It will work, but everyone has to join in the boycott.

  166. TripMaster Monkey says:

    bilbobaggins sez:

Who is going to believe their flawed arguments.

Fence-sitters who don’t know any better.

If you don’t think any of the “flawed arguments” you’ve seen here lately are at all convincing, that only because you haven’t seen any good flawed arguments, like the ones that used to be spun on a regular basis by types like Exley and Seixon.

As I said earlier, we developed a habit of refuting these arguments. This caused the erudite trolls to seek greener pastures, while it drew idiot trolls like m12 and Mr. Pee, who count any response in their “win” column.

  167. DreamCrusher says:

Think Progress’ standard of Truth: Jose Canseco, self-admitted user of steroids.

Wow. A claim made by Canseco, without supporting evidence or any independent collaboration, and all of a sudden Bush has a “steroids record”.

I’m amazed anyone actually uses Think Progress as a source for anything other than conspicuous and overt propaganda.

But hey, at least their single source isn’t anonymous this time. Go TP.

    You should cut down.

  169. Bob says:

I’m no fan of Bush, I’m a firm liberal. But it’s stories and reporting like this that really make me not want to visit liberal/progressive blogs anymore.

So, what ISN’T Bush behind at this point?

  170. katy says:

    not much, bob…
    heard your story before… doesn’t ring true…
but stick around and give it a fightin’ chance…
if you really want to help…
    otherwise, see ya.

  171. old hack says:

ah jesus. what a lame post. Who cares!? screw barry bonds hes a cheater just like Bush

What are you gonna Do about it? that’s what I wanna know. Are you just gonna sit around yrr living rooms and talk about it all your lives?

  172. nanobucks says:

Whose “facts” are you waiting for Mr. Bush?

  173. Flaco says:

  174. Donald from Hawaii says:

While the pervasive use of steroids and human growth hormone certainly calls into question how several home run records were attained during the previous decade, I would again remind people that such use was not formally deemed by Major League Baseball to be illegal until just a couple of years ago.

Should Barry Bonds be penalized for any previous use of steroids or HGH by him prior to 2003-04, when MLB finally succumbed to public pressure and clamped down on an obvious problem?

If that be the case, then should I also be penalized at this late date for having drunk alcohol as a teenaged freshman in college, even though I was 27 when the legal age to purchase alcoholic beverages was finally raised from 18 to 21?

Because from standpoints both legal and ethical, what’s the difference?

  175. the fly-man says:

Look, we can’t constantly rag on the Dear Leader’s past as inattentive and then project his Conscious disregard for something that happened within that same time frame of obliviousness. As far as professional sports and steroids use, don’t punish Barry, punish the profiteering enablers. I don’t buy the Reagan intelligence duality skit from SNL for Dear Leader. His past has been proven to be a situation where not all the porch lights were on and I don’t see him as caring enough to have an opinion. I bet he couldn’t have named more than 3 players while he was with the Rangers. You know Pal, Buddy and Guy.

  176. sullynyc says:

How does Rubern Sierra escape mention when it comes to steroid-pumping Texas Rangers during this (89-94) period. His nickname was El Caballo, and I bet he took some Horse steroids for good measure.

    lol ….

This steroid business, you’d think that it’s worse than staging dog fights or starting unnecesary wars in the Middle East.

  180. DreamCrusher says:

    JT,

Facts don’t matter, slander, lies, hearsay, and speculation is what the game is all about here at the blog run by former Clinton aide aides. AIDS? Judd has AIDS? Yeah, I heard it from an anonymous source. Extra, extra, read all about it.

  181. anonymous says:

all this stuff about bond’s head being boulder-sized.LOL! of course i noticed it, but hey, mcgwire and canseco had to be the two biggest linebackers i have ever seen. except, i hear they played BASEBALL!
