PBS’s NOW examined documents and evidence that point to a “Republican Party plan [in 2004] designed to keep Democrats from voting, allegedly by targeting people based on their race and ethnicity with key battleground states like Ohio and Florida of particular interest.” NOW revealed “e-mails between National Republican Party headquarters and Ohio State Republican Party officials” that talked about plans to compile voter caging lists. Watch the video of the program here.
Two stories this weekend presented different faces on the unwavering – and perhaps criminal – zeal of the Bush White House to acquire and maintain power. On Friday, PBS Now reported how a massive Republican “vote caging” scheme drove targeted minority (read Democratic) voters in key 2004 battleground states. And today, the Washington Post revealed that Bush HHS appointee William R. Steiger blocked the release of Surgeon General Richard Carmona’s 2006 global health report for purely political reasons.

It’s to be expected. Only idiots and ciphers would throw their votes away on a dry-drunk, coke-addled deserter, so KKKarl had to set up his very own Stasi. I think the importance of the Bush family’s longtime connections to the Nazis is too often overlooked, but, again, when the conservative mass media is in the pockets of the corporate welfare state, this is the inevitable result, which always leads to such events as tne French and American revolutions. too bad the righties are so far behind on the evolutionary scale that we still need to go through this horror.

July 29th, 2007 at 3:43 pmIf you’ll indulge me while I digress from the topic at hand, I have a little story to tell. A couple days ago I visited the site RedState.com just to see, for once, what they were saying on the other side of the blogosphere. It was basically what you would expect. The usual right-wing talking points, ranting and raving (not that we do that or anything, of course). But at the same time, I’ll admit, it was a mite intriguing. Here I was cavorting with the enemy, so to speak.
So, for the fun of it I decided to enter the fray and join the discussion. I commented. I blogged with abandon. I danced and weaved my arguments with great passion, and parried when attacked, which was often. It was just what I was in the mood for. All was going so well, I almost forgot about the potential pitfalls…
And then, it happened. Quite abruptly and without warning (despite the fact that their rules state they will give notice first) I was banned. Upon trying to login at one point, I was informed that my username was blocked or deactivated. My heart sank. I couldn’t believe it. Surely this was a mistake. They weren’t actually THAT petty and cowardly, were they? But sadly, apparently it was so.
And yet, I had experienced such heights of joy, I couldn’t surrender so easily….I quickly created a new email address and lickity-split I was back in action, blogging merrily away amongst the hordes of Fox-defenders and Bush-lovers, defying their simplistic arguments with actual evidence and critical thinking.
This was where I wanted to be! This was my calling! Maybe, just maybe, I could manage to turn one or two away from the ravages of Darth Cheney, and give them a glimpse of the light! Yes, I would show them the truth, and they would love me for it!!
But no, it was not meant to be. Tragically, it happened again. After successfully sending through a particularly witty comment, I went on to write yet another response, satisfying those deep primal urges like only blogging can. And then, I was denied. My comment failed to post this time. I was informed, once again, that my username was no longer recognized, barely an hour after it had been created.
But it was even worse than that, my friends–much, much worse. I can barely even speak (errr…blog..) the words. So, I’ll just shout it out loud, for all to hear. I then tried to reload their homepage, to see if at least my previous comments still remained on the site, only to encounter……stark whiteness. Nothing. A mysterious, unrelenting vaccuum staring out at me from my dusty pc. THEY BLOCKED MY COMPUTER!!!!!!!! The horror!!
Seriously, they blocked my computer from entering their site whatsoever. (Luddite that I am, I didn’t even know this was possible.) And no, folks, I was not using loads of four-letter words, threatening people with metaphorical uzis or suggesting (like, for example, Bill O’Reilly once did on the air) that terrorists attacking a certain American city would be just fine. No, I was simply blogging away as bloggers do, opinionated and quite possibly annoying, but not much worse than that. But apparently, if you don’t follow in single-file lockstep behind their right-wing credo, then you are not allowed to exist in their corner of the blogosphere. Some democratic, free speech forum they have over there.
So, my fellow progressives, liberals, dems, rebels-with-a-cause, I’m calling for action. If you feel the call, (or rather hear it, I guess, smell it, whatever) go to RedState.com. And……blog! Comment! Opine! Because, apparently, that is what they fear most.
And by the way, if you happen to be curious who this offending liberal is (because my comments might still be up there, they were from my first username) it’s gabejedmo (or else gabejedmo1, my second ill-fated username). Look around and you may find the faded shadow of my ghost lurking in the corners of that website, somewhat dejected, but certainly not down for the count. I’m simply keeping my profile low, I tell you; awaiting the most auspicious time to come forth again and make my presence known. Because, god willing, I shall not cower in vain. I will not be pushed around by people in suits and ties, with perfectly-cropped side-burns and glaringly-white teeth, and expensive watches, and fancy, silken underwear and large belt buckles and….well, whatever right-wingers wear. I will be back…I WILL BE BACK!!! But if not, maybe you will redeem me, stand up for freedom all across this great nation of bloggers and help fight against the voices of tyranny and insanity (seriously) and blog a little for me. RedState.com. Check it out. And let them feel the wrath (but in a generally polite sorta way) of the liberal.

July 29th, 2007 at 3:47 pmAh, the corporate imperial oil-nazi Bush form of government in action, destroying our American democracy as soon as possible (ASAP). The Bush crime family has several generations of connections to the German Nazi Party and Adolph Hitler: Grandfather of GWB, Prescott Bush and Great-grandfather, George Herbert Walker, supported the German Nazis and Hitler with trade and technology in the 1930s and the 1940s until President Franklin D. Roosevelt stopped them with an enforcement of the “Trading with the Enemy Act.” What a family of traitors to America, traitors to our Constitution and traitors to our Bill of Rights…
July 29th, 2007 at 3:48 pmAnd that was in 2004. You think it’s going to happen the same way in 2008?
I don’t know how it’s going to be done, but I am sure that 2008 will be the end of the democratic party one way or another. The system can take only so much abuse and the current D-Congress is already taking us off course.

It really has become the “culture war”, as the rich old white men try desperately to cling to power. Eventually they’ll be gone, but expect them to go down viciously. In all likelihood, they’ll sow the earth with salt and do their best to destroy the economy on their way to Dubai.
But this is what terrifies them so much about the candidacy of a Black man and a woman. Things are just too topsy-turvy for the neanderthals.

I thought it would soon be time to investigate the activitities of Ken Blackwell, Sup. of Elections, Ohio, 2004 who also functioned as Co-Chair, Bush/Cheney 04. Vote caging is the least of it all with Diebold’s complicity and rigged voting machinery well in place in Ohio in 08. THIS NEEDS AN IMMEDIATE AND FULL INVESTIGATION NOW if we are to feel that our votes will count and not be hacked again in 08. We now also KNOW that Bush stole the election in Florida in 2000 and need to investigate and indict, if found responsible, his brother Jeb and Katherine Harris.
July 29th, 2007 at 4:10 pmTheir evil doings in 2000 and 2004 are well known vis-a-vis DRE tampering and the whistleblowers are flying out of the woodwork in Ohio now.
July 29th, 2007 at 4:11 pmSorry to point this out folks, but this vote caging scheme is too complicated for 90-98% of the American public to grasp. Bummer about that whole representative democracy thing, but it isn’t like anything has actually been done to get the government off the Corporate teat. Don’t worry though, capitalism does just fine under a dictatorship. Maybe someday you’ll be rich too. What will you spend your 30 pieces of silver on?
July 29th, 2007 at 4:11 pmVote caging is a high crime but minor when one compares the huge and diabolical plot to corrupt our entire election system.
July 29th, 2007 at 4:12 pm#26 While “vote caging” may be too complex for some; “vote hacking” is not. Everyone knows that a piece of hardware is only as safe and legit as the software inside. Diebold knows all about how to make their machinery either “safe” or “vulnerable”. They had an intentional vulnerability in their DRE’s in 04.
go to http://www.blackboxvoting.org (a bipartisan voter’s rights site which details how easily these machines can be hacked as well as their award nominee flick about investigating the problem in “Hacking Democracy” on HBO.

Don’t you mean ‘data’ in your final sentence? I would assume that the latest ‘date’ would be today.
July 29th, 2007 at 4:18 pmAl Gore was the rightful winner of the 2000 election till the Supreme Court handed a victory to Bush instead of allowing a recount in FL. The election was stolen from Gore with the aid of then Secretary of State Harris and Jeb Bush. John Kerry was the rightful winner of the 2004 election. Then OH Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell threw thousands of provisional ballots in districts that were heavily African American and democratic. Bush was able to claim a victory that was unjust. Blackwell betrayed his own people by making sure that democratic and districts with heavy African American populations had fewer voting machines than districts that had conservative leaning voters.
In 2006 both Katherine Harris and Blackwell were handed embarrassing defeats for their respective seats. They also made sure that there was no paper trail of the votes in 2004. The Diebold company that supplied the voting machines had made contributions to republicans. This time however the democrats will win the White House due to the unpopularity of the Iraq war and Bush himself. Democrats handed the republicans their worst electoral defeat in the 2006 Congressional elections and will do so again in 2008.

July 29th, 2007 at 4:26 pmHillary’s breasts.

July 29th, 2007 at 4:32 pmIsn’t it the just heighth of hypocrisy to say that as a Republican you are fighting for democracy in Iraq so that Iraqis can vote in free and fair elections, but you are working overtime to deprive AMERICANS at home from their right to vote in your own democracy in free and fair elections…?? How in the heck do you justify that one?
And if you are so confident in your message, your vision, and your numbers, then why the need to resort to voter caging and targeting mainly minorities and soldiers (who are the ones overseas fighting that war in Iraq ’spreading democracy’)?
How can you say you are fighting to spread democracy overseas when you are working so hard to destroy democracy at home?
I realize the people that are doing this voter caging and other voter suppression practices are a segment of the Rep. party, but this practice needs to be shut down and people need to be held accountable. It is a crime to deprive voters of their right to vote in this country.

July 30th, 2007 at 1:53 amNeedless to say, Democrats are neurotically obsessed with restoring the right to vote to felons.

Thanks, Flakehead, for telling me that I am neurotically obsessed with a matter that has seldom passed through my mind. Yes, I am sure that you know better than I what obsesses my liberal friends and me.

The gremlins like to make up stuff as they go along. Bush kicked their ass in 2004, so the gremlins have to make up some reason why. Notice that the gremlins don’t point to any “caging†in ‘06. What happened, the GOP forgot to cage?

The GOP may or may not have engaged in voter caging in 2006. It’s possible that they engaged in voter caging, and just couldn’t weed out enough Dem votes. Hey, you can’t disenfranchise everyone.
Some possibilities:
1) There were a lot of angry voters who planned to vote Democratic — too many to shake out of the system by caging.
2) Many voters who lived in white suburban areas (unlikely to be hit by caging) were dissatisfied with the way things have been going in Washington and switched from Rep to Dem in their voting.
3) Determined voters who got hit with the “fraudulent voter” charge stepped up, challenged back, and got reinstated. Yes, the election was that important.
4) Any combination of the above.
Note I only said these are possibilities. I don’t like to make accusations without some kind of evidence. We do have some evidence that caging went on in 2004, as outlined by the PBS show. The only evidence of caging in 2006 is that pre-election polls pointed to on overwhelming victory by the Democrats (http://www.pollingreport.com/2006.htm) and while both houses did switch to the Dems, the margin of seats was closer than the polls suggested they might be. Raises suspicions, but not irrefutable (but where there’s smoke, there’s usually fire, so stay tuned — stuff is still shaking out).
And regarding your other point — Bush did not “kick ass” in 2004, he won narrowly. If you don’t know what a proper ass-kick looks like, check out Roosevelt vs. Landon (1936), Johnson vs. Goldwater (1964), Reagan vs. Mondale (1984).

2004 v. 2006? Yes, I think that the Repubs did fail to cage. I think they thought they had it, (Kkkarl’s math, remember?) and they lacked the personnel. For example, I worked the courthouse in a major eastern city for the state Democratic committee during both elections. In 2004 the Repub lawyers were there in force, trying to impound machines, deny voters (who often had legal photo id, leases, gas bills etc,) etc. In 2006 they sent a junior associate and never raised an eyebrow.
Given the poor databases maintained by most election bureaus, and the very common names on these lists, I think that voter caging is tantamount to an illegal conspiracy to violate the federal and state election laws.
P.S. most states do not bar felons from voting. So your comment about criminals is, for the most part, not on point.

The 2000 elections proved our system was broken. We’ve had seven years to put in place a verifiable uniform process and nothing has been done. If anything it’s gotten worse. Think, how fricking hard can it be to place a vote and have it counted properly? This isn’t rocket-science. Yet all efforts to fix this problem have been abandoned. Even the simple things like voting on Saturday or scrapping the antiquated Electoral College haven’t been addressed.
Now I ask you, with this obvious evidence of corruption of our election system what makes anyone think the next election won’t be rigged? Government of the people my ass.
“Those that vote don’t count those that count the votes do.†Stalin.
This country is a farce. We don’t even have a country. We have multi-mega-international corporations that own our government who put on a Dog (Dems) & Pony (Repubs) Show to give us the illusion we have some say in the affairs at hand. And the ignorance of the public to keep falling for this charade would be laughable it wasn’t so tragic.
The Founding Fathers warned us against everything we’ve turned into. We’re not even a Democracy. We weren’t meant to be. We’re a Republic, or at least we use to be. The FF warned against political parties. They warned against a standing army. They warned against foreign intervention. They warned against career politicians. They warned against a centralized bank. And they warned us that this fragile system of government could be easily taken over from within by forces directly opposed to all that the Constitution implies.
They warned us against all these things and we failed – miserably.
