Bush’s approval rating plummets in Alabama.

A new poll finds that “a slight majority of Alabamians feel President Bush is doing only a fair or poor job overall and a large majority view his handling of the Iraq war as only fair or poor. The survey by the Press-Register and University of South Alabama marked the first time that the poll has found more than half rating Bush only fair or poor: 29 percent rated his job as poor, 23 percent only fair, 38 percent good and 8 percent excellent.”

    14% for Congress

  3. dan says:

46% rate him as good or better, down from 52%

after factoring the margin of error, that’s no more than a slip. No one could possibly define that as a “plummet”.

Only 29% actually feel Bush is doing a bad job. After 6 years of this fool, and Katrina in their backyard, 70% of people in Alabama still think he’s at least doing ok. And again… half still think he’s basically doing good or better.

  4. BlueArkansas says:

Just how many in that 8% sport disturbingly similar genetic profiles remains as yet unknown…

  5. mikey r says:

I was about to give the cue for some troll to misstate the off-topic approval rating for Congress, but of course Flaccid was right on top of it.

BTW, Flaccid, the most recent “approval” rating for Congress was 37%.

You might have missed it: “Congress did not rate much better with a 37 percent approval”

  6. tarazan says:

If people in Alabama feel that way….then it is serious business for GOP politicians from now own.
    Nothing is certain anymore.

Alabama barometer reading tells the whole story.

Only because they refuse to do what they were elected for. I congress actually started being more aggressive towards ending OIF, their approval would skyrocket. Also, many repubs are upset about the repub side of congress killing the Webb amendment and not allowing our troops to be re-equipped between deployments. So, the disapproval is on both sides.

People in the south always wonder why they lost the civil war. This mentality is the exact cause of their loss. Their white flag raising surrender monkey moment when they quit, threw in the towel, stopped fighting and started eating Northern Surrender Cheese.

Now these same nitwits are reduced to reneacting their losses and re-fighting the war on bumper stickers.

Rest assured, these military meatballs would lose again and again and again and would be waving the white-flag of surrender again.

A message delivered direct from the Rove spin machine. This has long been a strategy of the anti-democracy Republican party: make people as cynical as possible to keep them away from the polls, while turning out their base of idiots, cretins, fascists, and losers.

Sorry, pal, but it ain’t working anymore. GOP thugs are going to find that they can’t win elections any longer with 70% of the country against them.

  29. Perry Logan says:

“The vapid Bushbots, who spent the last two years claiming that polls are biased and they don’t mean a thing are now trumpeting the congressional approval ratings.”

Good point. Beware of any poll that sounds tailor-made for a guy in a pick-up truck.

And the poor wingers cannot possibly understand what bad news those ratings are for their lost cause. In a nutshell, people are essentially mad at the Democrats for not being radical enough. It’s part of the leftward shift the Republicans themselves have started. That’s pretty ironic, isn’t it?

  30. bluestatedon says:

“It doesn’t matter. Every politician is a lying scumbag.”

Why yes, Bilbo, the last 6+ years have conclusively proven that you and Ralph Nader are right: there is no difference between Al Gore and George W. Bush.

After all, we have proof that a President Gore would have also ignored pre-9/11 warnings of impending attack; would have manipulated intelligence about Saddam’s MWD capabilities in order to lie to Congress and the public; would have dismissed Generals who advised him on how many troops would be required in Iraq; would have started the war with no plans on guarding Saddam’s huge weapons depots or the Iraq border; would have sent US troops into battle in poorly armored vehicles; would have completely failed in dealing with Katrina; would have fired 8 US attorneys and then lied repeatedly about why; would have imposed gag orders on scientists in a whole variety of federal departments; and a President Gore would certainly have nominated Harriet Meiers, John Roberts, and Sam Alito to the Supreme Court.

Yep, all politicians are scumbags. They’re all the same. No difference.

  31. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Perry: “In a nutshell, people are essentially mad at the Democrats for not being radical enough. It’s part of the leftward shift the Republicans themselves have started. That’s pretty ironic, isn’t it?”

Yes, and the poll numbers that conservatives consistently pretend not to notice are those that ask the question, “which party’s candidate will you vote for for congress?”

The last poll with that question I saw, last month, said 58% Dem and 26% Repub.

The modern libertarian conservative movement is toast! Bush broke it.

  32. S.D. says:

  33. Jackie says:

Now we know that 8% of the people in Alabama got taken care of during the Katrina Storm. Yes Senator Lott got his big new home paid by taxpayers as Bush told him he would. Now we see other profited from the FEMA money too. The problem is only the chosen Republicans got paid other people got lip service. To bad we can’t get a poll on the victims that were left to die because Bush was busy at a fun raiser in California and Connie Rice watch the people begging for help as she was shopping in New York Times Square. Yes it’s more important to get those shoes then help Americans. Cheney rushed right back from vacation as soon as he heard that FEMA had money to give away to big businesses. Now we also know that foreign countries were turned away from helping the Katrina victims because well the Bush Administration thought it was better for them to die. Thank goodness all Americans didn’t think that as most got up and started helping fellow Americans in need. Now we see how our tax dollars are spent. But the IRS did tell the Katina victims that lived and had to fend for themselves that they had to pay their taxes. Yes it’s important that every American pay their taxes some just don’t get help when needed because Iraq needs it.

  38. veritas says:

The fascist neocons counted on the people’s malleability and trust in those taking an oath of office to protect them and work in their best interests – not to spy on them illegally, lie to them incessantly, and hijack all of their constitutional rights. I love hearing Bush throw around the word “freedom” because it reminds me of a Joplin tune to the effect ….”freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose” and I’m beginning to personally see the truth in those words right now. The people’s freedoms and rights have been hijacked by a renegade administration and a capricious, sycophantic DOJ.

What amuses me in this moment is that these fools really think that the people can continue to be fooled by their overt buffoonery. That isn’t about to happen; in fact, once fooled, the next emotion is sheer anger and disdain when the same trick is attempted once again.

The sheer audacity and ignorance of these jokers as they attempt the same trick, over and over, and over, and over – ad nauseum.

  39. veritas says:

So, the distraction campaign consists of “Lil Bush and the new Prime Minister talking about freedom and cold-blooded killers” today and then we get a chance to “see lil Dickie run” on Larry King. Whoopie! Now we’re being distracted by what a bunch of crackers in Alabama think…..TP, don’t you have anything more relevant that this to post?? Or do you enjoy watching people engage in bigotry and find it amusing. You know that’s precisely what a thread of this nature will engender. Come on, now, TP. Let’s bring a bit more decorum into things with more relevant news.

  40. veritas says:

Hi Verbalkint! Good to see you here today. To dovetail on your thoughts in post #21, there is no doubt that the spin machine is out in full force today. They have to attempt to run some interference because the Congressional machine is moving toward impeachment of all of them – with the majority of americans behind them every step of the way.

As for the GOP perspective, it’s pretty clear that the longer thugs like Rove, Rice, Cheney, Bush, etc. are permitted to be front and center making jackasses of themselves, the greater the damage to their chances of ever being elected to the White House again. Anyone with a room temperature IQ can figure that one out.

You’d think they’d be getting pressure from the candidates to rid them of the baggage which Gonzo, Cheney, Rove, and Bush bring to their side of the ledger. These individuals are not only undesirable at this point, they’re downright “toxic”.

Although I agree with your post for teh most part, I do feel it is relevant as to the heart of the GOP support has been in this part of the country.

Plus, maybe I get a slight rounding up of the mouth corners when I think of this last bastion of Dubya’s base slithering away!

  42. veritas says:

Hi Upside00: Imagine that! Offering big dinero for quick recruits! Things ARE getting very desperate for them, aren’t they? Soon it will be a case of a war “with nobody behind them”. When they find that they have to reinstate the draft, then you’ll hear people scream. I say that every politician who wants to vote to continue this debacle in Iraq, can only do so as he enlists himself into the military….or his wife….or one of his children. It’s only fair.

  43. veritas says:

Upside00: I hear you on that aspect but I truly dislike it when people begin the bigoted comments and I fear that this is bringing out the worst in all of us. I do see your point though on Bush’s base deserting him. But we already knew that by the national numbers. This just informs us as to where his base is actually shrinking.

  44. upside00 says:

I also have many great friends in Alabama who are wonderful people so I really dislike singling out and indulging in mass generalization of any kind. We needn’t permit them to pull our strings like this.

    Comment by Jay Randal — July 30, 2007 @ 1:54 pm

Well, Jay, take the freakin’ blinders off, get your snobbish self out of the Atlanta Metro area a bit more and you might see a crapload of “dirt poor people” living in YOUR state. I see as many crackers and rednecks living along the I-85 corridor between the AL-GA state line and Atlanta as I do in Bama.
Your State’s Congressional delegation is MAJORITY REPUBLICAN (just like Alabama’s). Your Governor is a REPUBLICAN (just like Alabama’s). Your State Legislature is REPUBLICAN in both Houses (unlike Alabama’s–both chambers are Democratic-controlled, though some Senate Democrats caucus with the Republicans, but not enough to earn a majority as our Lt Gov is a Democrat). So, maybe all your “dirt-poor” AND “filthy rich” prefer the Republicans since the Republicans hold such dominance in Georgia’s state and national politics.
Oh, and by the way, at least Alabama hasn’t been in the papers for incarcerating a Black teenager for having sex with a White girl with the Chief Prosecutor in the case STILL fighting to make sure the boy remains behind bars and is forever tagged as a sexual offender. Nor is Alabama blessed with a legal mind (as in Marietta) who would prosecute a comic-book shop owner (Gordon Lee) for unwittingly giving (not selling) a boy a “mature readers” comic that featured some non-sexual male nudity and THEN–just before the case was to go to court–changed the “victim” in the case to the first boy’s YOUNGER brother.

Pinget, my derision is to the confederate holdouts, not the good folks who are held hostage to the Southern Crackertocracy.

    Comment by GSD — July 30, 2007 @ 3:13 pm

Well, GSD, perhaps in future, you (and Jay) might want to acknowledge that you’re not blindly condemning ALL Alabamians for the ineptitude of the Dubya-blinded loyalists. (As for the Confederate deal, if someone could just note to the Battle Flag supporters that they are acting in a treasonable manner–it’s called the “Battle Flag” for a reason–they might think twice about flying it. Especially, given the touch of irony with many of them being Dubya loyalists and their willingness to call anyone opposed to the Iraq fiasco a “traitor”.)

  62. Jack says:

82% of Alabamans can’t even read. Shows how good no child left behind is

  63. Pernell says:

Keep in mind – as with all polls showing Bush unpopular – in Alabama, much of that dislike is because Bush is not a big enough extremist. They are mad at him because he isn’t a bigger jerk than he is.

  64. Apple says:

I was just about to write that while it may seems Alabama has receded from Bush support, it may be because he has not dropped a nuclear bomb on Iraq. Then I saw that #64 had essentially said the same thing. (Don’t mean to single Alabama out – there are plenty of over the top people here in Ohio)

  65. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Paul: “any other day of the year, ya’ll condemn those from Alabama as toothless, inbreed morons. But now there’s a poll that shows Bush slipping, what they have to say somehow has some credibility for you. How selective and convenient for you.”

You’re the only one I see around here using that kind of language, cous. And, you need to understand that liberals are naturally accepting people. If someone wises up, they’re always welcome to the wised-up club. That’s the way it works with tolerant folks who don’t spend a lot of time thinking about how to punish people, but instead focus on how to help people.

  66. Matt says:

This is one of Bush’s last sanctuaries in Alabama. Hell, many people are still riding around with W. stickers on their cars.

The Baptist preachers are still standing strongly behind the theory of pre-emptive war. I simply don’t get it as a Christian myself. Now they want to strike Iran, a country that barely even has an airforce or navy.

Thank goodness we are down here trying to convert these folks to Ron Paul supporters.

  67. monkeyboy says:

Hmmph, I knew the comments section would be loaded with the standard Alabama jokes. Too bad. I know its easier than making valid points, but come on, we’re not ALL vacant-eyed, illiterate, inbreds. Some of us are paying attention, despise Bush and the “war”, and even read TP every day ((shocker)).

Some of my fellow Dems/Progressives fall into the same tired name-calling routines that our friendly neighborhood trolls employ.
