Inslee to introduce Gonzales impeachment tomorrow.»

Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) is introducing legislation that would require the House Judiciary Committee and the House of Representatives to begin an impeachment investigation into Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, in the wake of his damaging testimony last week. The legislation reads:

Resolved: That the Committee on the Judiciary shall investigate fully whether sufficient grounds exist for the House of Representatives to impeach Alberto Gonzales for high crimes and misdemeanors.

As much as I hate to say it, I don’t see this going anywhere. Leheay and Spector say to give him a week to change his testimony and by then congress will be on vacation. Bush can’t interfer with and impeachment proceedings right? Pretty sure I read that somewhere.

July. 2007. and still today it is only talk about impeachment. Don’t most of us agree that a violation of the laws we know of is enough to warranty impeachment, and that if any amount of the other things that the administration has rumored to have done are true, that this too would add to that.
Congress gets to see that classified info that we do not. (except for Valerie Plame and the CIA in the Mideast, which went blind a few years ago) And Congress only sits and does nothing?

it is amazing that we, the people, have had to wait for this amazing announcement. talk, talk, talk.

  11. slimpickins Says:

Interesting that someone leaked to NYT the info today about the “meeting” with Gonzales being about the data mining program. That was no incident - it was to give Gonzo cover for the impeachment. They can’t lose Gonzo. Don’t make the mistake of thinking he’s going without a fight. Otherwise, watch ut for that recess appointment.

That said, send this little chump back to Texas!

  18. Marty Didier Says:

If you’re wondering why this is so insane, it’s because it’s part of a huge COUP similar to the one in 1933. I was in a family for more than 26 years who joined Organized Crime only this wasn’t any ORDINARY Crime system. Then they were laundering “Drug and Gun Running” money straight into Property using Big Banks with Mortgage Fraud for those involved. The “Gun Running”part is already in the news with Drummond and Chiquita only not many know that the same people are shipping huge shipments of drugs into the US. As an example, the Chicago WEEKLY $100 Million shipment are split up with New York and Florida and there are OTHER huge shipments going elsewhere in the US as well. There’s also a huge drug system in Canada all linked to the MOB (Bonono family) and linked to my family.

The family explained the COUP and many details throughout the 90’s. They threatened me that if I talk about this, I would end up in one of the many Prisons scattered around the US (Detention Camps). They said “When the Change Comes, you’re either with us or not and if you’re not, you’ll end up in one of the Prisons”.

We have millions of people in poverty.
    We have a huge deficit.
    We have energy problems.

And what are we doing? Having stupid quarrels about whether or not Alberto Gonzales technically lied under questioning that had absolutely nothing to do with the topic of the hearings he was asked to attend.

No wonder the (Democratically controlled) Congress has a 14% approval rating.

  20. JG Says:

I would love to see Congress cancel the August recess at the last minute and go after this big time. (Boy, wouldn’t that shake things up..)
Then once they take care of Gonzales (who is guilty as hell), they can move up the food chain. That would also take care of Bush trying to slide in any recess appointments.. I think it is important that Gonzo BE IMPEACHED rather than to have him just resign and slink away. He has to be prevented from receiving a pardon at some point. We NEED all the information they are fighting so hard to hide so we can undo all the damage and set an important precedent. It has to be impeachment. It has to be now before they have even more time to cover their tracks and destroy evidence.

Bush’s brush can wait a year..

  21. Gadren Says:

And yet the top story on CNN is that dogfighting nonsense… is that really a matter of national importance?

  22. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

We have an administration that is daring the Congress to actually deal with the Constitutional crisis being forced upon them.

  39. JMOHR Says:

This is the first positive step that I have seen as a result of the US Atty investigation. I would suggest that this is more that just about possible perjury from Gonzo. It should also include charges of gross dereliction of duty. Gonzo has permitted violations of civil service rules in the appointment of immigrations judges, career civil service employees, the firing of US Attorneys (we still do not know who fired the atty’s nor is there any paper trail as to the reason for firing such individuals) and the use of politics in determining prosecution of voter fraud cases.

DreamCrusher: I would suggest that holding Gonzo to account is a first good step towards demanding accountability from other appointees responsible for many of the ills that we see today. It is a strong case that would do well. I would expect that the Republicans will prevent conviction before the senate. However, it provides a strong argument that the Democratic majorities must be increase or a Democrat must be elected president to permit the will of the people to over rule the imperialistic presidency we now see.

  40. Leporello Says:

Spine! A Democratic Representitive showed some honest-to-goodness Spine! Maybe this will go somewhere, maybe it won’t. Hopefully enough Representitives will have the courage and/or the decency to stand up and do the right thing. However, whatever happens, Rep. Inslee has reminded America that its still possible to have courage and stand up and do the right thing. Now if only more members of Congress will stand with him.
Impeach Bush and Cheney and Save the Constitution!

  41. DreamCrusher Says:

    ronjazz,

“well, your viewpoint is ass-backwards, because if this impeachment goes forward, the dems ratings will be up into the 60s and 70s.”

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry at your delusional state of mind. The Dem Congress has been conducting their parade of hearings for the past few months, and their ratings have gone straight down the toilet.

They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.

  42. Justice Says:

this has been the plan all along. Congress knows they have to impeach Gonzo so the investigation can move forward. Between all the WH stonewalling and all the loyal Bushies lying or “forgetting” virtually any and all of their actions on the job(that we PAY THEM TO DO)there is no way to complete the USA purge investigation.
Everything is being held hostage by the WH, they won’t release the docs because they know their criminality is so thick and deep, they will be indicted. They also know their national election fraud scheme that allowed Bushie the election in 2000 and 2004 will come to light.
Not to mention the illegality of their use of RNC eqipment for WH business, a flagrant violation of some very nasty federal laws.
They are all screwed and they know it.
Once Gonzo goes, they all go down. Otherwise, we have to wait until this presidency, that he only won through cheating, is over and then we can go after them all and try them and imprision them with the rest of their criminal pals. The only one to get off scotfree will be Libby.
    LOL
Im sure Cheney is worried as hell seeing as how HE was the one that publically declared the war was “winding down” in 03, they want to weasel out of war crime charges by saying we technically aren’t at war but he blew that one by announcing publically we were holding POW’s and at war.
Liars always end u getting caught in the web of their own lies. I love watching this happen to them. The noose is getting tighter and tighter. Up the chain Leahy goes, collecting his evidence piece by piece. Im sure they are ALL freaking out knowing Congress has all the documentary evidence of their voter caging scheme right now. Damn hard to weasel out of actual documentary evidence!
See the criminals and their supporters squirm.
All you fools that back this regime will be just like the Nazi sympathizers, reviled by the entire world. I hope you realize that, trolls.

    I’ll take your comments individually:

“Good to see we all have our priorities straight.
We have wars in two theaters.
We have millions of people without health care.
We have millions of people in poverty.
    We have a huge deficit.
    We have energy problems.”

Agreed. These problems need our attention.

“And what are we doing? Having stupid quarrels about whether or not Alberto Gonzales technically lied under questioning that had absolutely nothing to do with the topic of the hearings he was asked to attend.”

Are you saying that it’s OK to lie under oath if the question has “nothing to do” with the appropriate topic? Gonzales is an attorney — he knew if a question was irrelevant, he could have objected on those grounds.

We aren’t concerned about Gonzo’s lying as a “gotcha” thing. We are concerned about the credibility of the nation’s top lawyer and the head of the Department of Justice. We are concerned that the DoJ is being used by our executive branch to protect their butts while they trample all over the constitution, manipulate elections to keep their party in power, rob people of their civil rights, and lie to the American people to achieve their objectives. When we see the AG telling obvious falsehoods and dancing around questions, we see a great need for change in the DoJ — starting at the top. This is NOT trivial.

“No wonder the (Democratically controlled) Congress has a 14% approval rating.”

This tired talking point of the right again. Not only is it a lie, it’s a stale lie at that. If you want us to take it seriously, provide a link or a source to this magic “poll” of yours. We have repeatedly shown evidence of what the real poll numbers are, and that the Democrats in Congress get significantly higher poll numbers than the Republicans do.

  56. Justice Says:

The only reason Congress hasn’t been able to pass legislation most of America wants is due to the Rethugs blocking any and every good piece of legislation. If they can’t manage to block it, Bush will veto it. They don’t care about what is good and right in the least. They are like children screaming “it’s my ball!” and stopping the game while they cling to “their” ball. Using EP as a shield against investigation of criminal wrongdoing won’t fly. Simply by OPENING the Impeachment investigation of Gonzales a whole lot will start happening. It makes no nevermind if the Impeachment is blocked in the end by the Rethugs, the INVESTIGATION is the important factor.
Once they can finally get the documents out of the DOJ, this is the first domino in the criminal chain, the rest will fall swiftly after this gets underway.

When it comes to National Security, Democrats are now trusted more by 42% of likely voters, Republicans by 40%. This means that Democrats now enjoy at least a nominal edge on all ten issues regularly tracked by Rasmussen Reports to gauge voters’ trust of the two major parties.

The Democrats have also gained a little ground this month when it comes to the War in Iraq. Harry Reid’s party moved from a ten-point advantage in late June to a twelve-point lead of 47% to 35% in the new survey.

and then watch the whole thing take 9 months and in the end Gonzo’s sentence is commutted and then he is pardoned.

he will never tell the truth and no threat of jail will convince him to turn on this administration.

Yesterday on Meet The Press, they spent the last 20 minutes talking about how timely it was for Gonzo to have gone back before Congress and set himself up for this.

Except this time, they had given him the questions in advance; he knew what they were going to ask, and what was going to be introduced as evidence, before he testified.

It’s distraction. Someone said lets focus on impeachment, and I agree. Kucinich is pushing to reopen two questionalble issues of the 911 Commission Report in the House.

  86. Republicans Can't Govern. Says:

Gonzales will have to rush off and read the definition of “impeach” in his Black’s Law Dictionary. He either (i) never learned it; or (ii) cannot recall what that word means.

He should go back to practicing *real estate law* at **Enron’s law firm**.

  87. DreamFinder Says:

They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.

    Like the so-called surge?

  88. Republicans Can't Govern. Says:

#90. Hahahaha! DreamCrusher gets a PUBLIC SPANKING! Nice!

  89. Justice Says:

The we have is so PLODDING. It just drives me bats. Discovery is so slow, but I try to remember there is A LOT MORE that we are not privy to. All the behind the doors testimony is being collected. It is hard to keep the faith, the PROCESS takes forever. Bush/Fielding don’t even have the decency to follow the law even in the process! This flagrant violation of the rule of law and the inherent arrogance it brings must be stopped, investigated and indictments issued. Bush and his entire admin. work at the PLEASURE OF THE PEOPLE.
    WE have the power.
Rethugs should think long and hard about their support here and realize they are putting PARTY BEFORE COUNTRY. This is an ERROR of not only morality but your PATRIOTIC DUTY AS A CITIZEN to stand up to ANYONE who violates the Rule of Law! Especially a President! YOU ARE SUPPORTING A CRIMINAL. We are duty bound as citizens to fight enemies DOMESTICALLY too. Oversight is REQUIRED, Congress would be remiss if they didn’t oversee ALL of our govt. The problem here isn’t the oversight, it’s that they have found SO MUCH INCOMPETENCE, CORRUPTION, AND CRONYISM. If there was “nothing there” then why is it when I watched ALL the testimony of ALL the hearings that is what I saw? Try educating yourself and watch the actual hearings and you can see for yourself none of what the Progressives are saying isn’t FACT. He has corrupted our entire govt. Every agency is in crisis! Stop watching Fox news and go watch the actual hearings and see for yourself!
If this is the kind of employee that is just fine with you, that you want your tax dollars going to, then you are not a functioning, responsible position.
Gonzales sound be fired for incompetence, nevermind all the rest, yet the Prez keeps him there to the country’s DETRIMENT. Does he care? Not a bit, cuz he’s the “Decider”
lord help us, we have a child in the WH.

  90. Justice Says:

this TP system drops words. it dropped the word system from my first sentence. it should read, “the system we have…”

  91. hellinabucket Says:

The best responses are sometimes the shortest. Great post DreamFinder.

  92. Brassmask from 3DHS Says:

This is going to fail just like the Democrat congress has been a failure. The approval rating of the Dem congress is going to sink to 10% because of this.

  93. Brassmask from 3DHS Says:

The stupid dems don’t have the votes for impeachment.

  94. hellinabucket Says:

There’s those made up numbers again. “sink to 10%”. This congress has already proven to be more productive than the last one just by the work week alone. I believe there was a thread a little while ago here quoting a republican Senator (or House rep.) that this current congress has been accomplishing what it had set out.

So your words are hollow but you believe them. You scare easily it take it Brassmask.

  95. JG Says:

When impeachment hearings are announced and begin, approval ratings for Congress will go through the roof which will inspire and propell Congress forward once they realize that America is behind them all the way. This is the CURE everyone has been waiting for.

  96. Innocent Bystander Says:

Boy, if the firewall goes, Bush and Cheney are in big trouble. I suspect that the 2nd and 3rd tier Bushguard are going to now see that Congress and the American people are serious about the criminal obstruction….perhaps we’ll start seeing new e-mails and evidence of DoJ politicization from the WH suddenly showing up. Is Rove far behind? Bush, losing his brain and his firewall, could leave the boy-king stark naked. Not a pretty sight.

  97. hellinabucket Says:

As long as you believe it’s only a partisan issue then you’ll believe what your fed. If you could look at the damage the current AG has done to the office of the highest law enforcer in the land you would see this isn’t a partisan issue. It’s having the AG above reproach, not slithering in the legaleeze muck like a divorce atty.

  98. Innocent Bystander Says:

The stupid dems don’t have the votes for impeachment.

    Comment by Brassmask from 3DHS — July 30, 2007 @ 5:49 pm

Let’s wait till a vote is actually taken OK? Because if the Republicans want to make this political, then they can explain their vote to their constituents in 2008. Knowing this Party of Rubberstamping chickenhawks who are avoiding any vote of record, this is one vote they can’t filibuster. Being the criminal cowards that they are, I think they’ll thrown Alberto under the Presidential shortbus if they think it will buy them a couple of points in the polls.

It’s a win for Dems, either way.

  99. JG Says:

I see it more as a win for the rule of law and a big win for the Constitution. I don’t see that this Administration and their criminal cronies represent Republicans OR Democrats. They represent themselves and the neocons.

  100. east coaster Says:

    ITMFA! ITMFA!

    Comment by JG — July 30, 2007 @ 6:12 pm

Exactly, JG. Just watch, the first time one of the “beloved” Republicans says something about needing to impeach this admin, the authoritarians will be all over the idea, as if were their own.

  102. hellinabucket Says:

I wish more would have the same viewpoint as yours JG. Both inside and outside the beltway.

  103. me Says:

    It’s about time.

  104. J Says:

Why does this only get a little grey post? This should be a big one in color…

What is TP’s criteria for deciding which posts are grey?

I think that its about time that someone in Congress has stood up to do the right thing regardless of everyone else cynically trying to predict the votes it may or may not get.

  105. JG Says:

I’m so happy right now I think I will go mow my lawn.. (And I hate to mow the lawn). ;-)

  107. trueblue Says:

Last time I mowed the lawn, I got 2 hornet stings to my thigh.

I would love to see Gonzales impeached, but these past 6 years have made me quite the pessimist.

We have wars in two theaters.
We have millions of people without health care.

    We have energy problems.”

    Comment by DreamCrusher — July 30, 2007 @ 4:31 pm

Can you do more than one thing at once?

Can Congress do more than one thing at once?

  110. Dave Says:

“We have an AG who displays contempt and utter disrespect towards the people’s elected representatives.”

Well that’s 87% of the country if you look at congressional approval ratings these days. As bad as Bush’s approval numbers are, he’s still higher than congress. What’s that say?

I think in order to have any change, you’re going to need something along the lines of a 30% turnover in congress at an election in 08. Take 15% from each side. The more you can get the better.

  111. Free TV Says:

It’s about time..let’s hope it gets the ball rolling, and we can only hope for more impeachments to come.

  112. Concerned Citizen Says:

I only hope that George W Bush will pardon an impeached Gonzales so that the house may next impeach Bush.

  113. r€nato Says:

did he lie about a blow job?

if not then impeachment is completely uncalled for, and just the result of a partisan witch hunt.

  114. James T. Lee II Says:

I absolutely agree with investigation and impeachment as I did with Clinton’s perjury. If impeached and convicted, jail time would be in order for this betrayal of the public trust. I doubt that there is a gross misunderstanding here but that must be ruled out before the congress does it’s duty. How foolish the House would look if they had been duped by the legalese and political speech they use on us.

    Jim Lee

  115. bilbobaggins Says:

Wow, a Democrat with some backbone. Way to go Inslee. I have never heard of him, but to him I say “good on you”.

Now, it’s going to be very interesting to see how the other Democrats react to this.

  116. bilbobaggins Says:

“Bush can’t interfer with and impeachment proceedings right? Pretty sure I read that somewhere.
    Comment by IgnoranceIsNotBliss “

That is right. And that is the reason why Congress needs to bring Articles of Impeachment against Gonzales before they leave town. If they don’t, I predict that Gonzales will find an urgent need to spend more time with his family and then Bush will make a recess appointment.

I am very disappointed in the Democrats for even thinking about leaving town at a critical time like this.

  117. fred Says:

We have wars in two theaters.
We have millions of people without health care.
We have millions of people in poverty.
    We have a huge deficit.
    We have energy problems.

WE can thank the republicans for this..

And what are we doing? Having stupid quarrels about whether or not Alberto Gonzales technically lied under questioning that had absolutely nothing to do with the topic of the hearings he was asked to attend. No wonder the (Democratically controlled) Congress has a 14% approval rating.

Yeah.. thank god the president didn’t get a blow job or who knows what would be going on, huh?
The reason they are not getting the job done is due to the republicans blocking important legislation and the president voting the rest.

So it’s still all your fault.
Just a matter of time… you can be sure the cans won’t get the majority again… likely not the presidency.

  118. Merkhava Says:

After he is impeached, how about a sentence to do time at Gitmo? I can have a cage next to SKM and they can spend there days discussing the constitutionality of habeas corpus, show trials and torture.

  119. ronpaul2008 Says:

    HIGH
    TREASON

  120. David Lloyd-Jones Says:

Impeach the whole bunch — starting with Clarence Thomas, famous perjurer, and then Cheney, then Bush.

Gonzo? What the Hell, he’s small change in this buncha crooks and traitors.

  121. Carl Ballard Says:

I would disagree with the newscaster that Inslee is from the Seattle Area. He’s from the suburbs. Even some pretty far North and East. So this isn’t just some crazy idea from a Seattle Democrat.

  122. Left Coast Mike Says:

Washington’s representatives are doing their part, now if we can get some support from the rest of the country. Thanks Jay!

  123. fascistUSA Says:

Bush/Cheney are FASCIST DICTATORS. Gonzo is just another member of Team Fascist. America is NO LONGER a Democracy. ZEITGEISTmovie.com.

  124. David Lloyd-Jones Says:

    Merkhava,

    Water-boarding, maybe?

It would be appropriate, obviously. However we represent civilization, and we cannot advance that by applying the methods of savages to the savages.

    -dlj.

  125. Devil's Advocate Says:

I’m a member of the right, and even I think Gonzales should be impeached.

It is time Conservatives stop defending him.

I wrote about it at Copious Dissent - Your Daily Dose of Liberty.

  126. Pete Says:

You people are all idiots. Impeached doesn’t mean “thrown out of office,” impeached means to charge someone. If he gets impeaches, that doesn’t necessarily mean he gets thrown out of office. You can ask slick Willie about that.

I find it terribly amusing how all of you say we should “fight for the Constitution,” when I highly doubt most of you have ever even read it.

Before you run your mouth, learn what you’re saying.

  127. lurking lady Says:

impeaches? really good with cobbler, I bet!

  128. John Keudell Says:

C’mon, Gonzales is just a manure salesman with a mouthful of samples.

  129. Greenjeans Says:

It’s like Josh Marshall says, Bush is not standing by Gonzalez despite Gonzalez’s lies, he’s standing by Gonzalez because Gonzalez lies.

  130. Marky Narc Says:

Dammit! You can’t impeach any of these people! How am I supposed to vote against my own self interest if they’re all gone?

  131. Cal Fuqua Says:

And again, Inslee has shown us what it takes to rise above mediocrity. We need more Dems like him and McDermott.

  132. V Says:

If there aren’t reprecussions for breaking laws then we have lawlessness. And that is why it is important. Yes there are many important issues that need to be addressed. They got to this sorry state because the current administration wasn’t addressing them and continue to block change. We need justice to more forward. And we need truth to have justice. And anyone who won’t tell the truth needs to go - willingly or otherwise.

  133. Liberalsarebrainless Says:

I Hate to bash the no nothing brain dead element of a soon to be minority political party, but Our President, his staff have done NOTHING illegal. they are providing safety for all-even the demotards!
