Novak On YouTube Debate: ‘It Was Really Disgusting’

Novak On YouTube Debate: ‘It Was Really Disgusting’»

The criticism over the people-powered YouTube Democratic presidential debate has been pouring in from the right. First, the White House announced President Bush wasn’t really big on the debates. Then, leading conservative candidates Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani begged out of the Republican forum. Now, Robert Novak is adding his gripes.

Appearing on Bloomberg Television this weekend, Novak said of the YouTube debate, “I thought it was really disgusting. … The reporters were terrible but this was ludicrous.” Novak argued, “You know when we did away with the monarchy and went through democracy, there was a lot of fear that this sort of thing would happen. It took 200 years but we got there.”

Watch it:

Something about power in the hands of the masses appears to trouble Novak deeply. Recently, he suggested heaven would be a “place where there are no blogs.” He previously explained that bloggers “bloviate. They give their opinions. They don’t try to find things out.”

Bloviating has no place when it does not come from Novak’s mouth.

Transcript:

NOVAK: You know when we did away with the monarchy and went through democracy, there was a lot of fear that this sort of thing would happen. It took 200 years but we got there. I thought it was really disgusting — more disgusting of course when everybody was saying, and you’re saying Margaret, they were better than the reporters. The reporters were terrible but this was ludicrous. Look at the person next to you, what’s nice about them and what’s not nice about them. But we have really reached the depths now.

What makes Novakula think he is going anywhere near the vicinity of HEAVEN???

  2. JMOHR Says:

This is the typical thought process of Novak as well as the Republican elite. They truly believe that only a select few are qualified to determine who should lead the country. The YouTube debate was certainly no worse than the MSM run debates that we have seen. It certainly made it harder for candidates to evade answering questions,

  3. Administrator1 Says:

If we have sunk to the depths, Novak should be happy. He has company. Some people really have lost any moral authority to comment. Novak belongs in that category.

Who do these PEOPLE think they are, wanting to be a part of OUR OWN POLITICAL PROCESS?

I think when Novak said it was disgusting, he must have seen himself walking off that show on CNN.

  5. Krazny Says:

I am sure Novak was shocked by the proletariat asking questions.

  6. jsh Says:

Ironically, “disgusting” is always the adjective that comes to mind when I’m subjected to Novak’s appearances on TV. On the whole, I much prefer a snowman. Actually, I even prefer the psychopath who wanted to be sure his “baby,” his assault rifle, would be protected in a Democratic administration.

  7. WaltTheMan Says:

Or looking into a mirror. His vanity must have inches of crusted puck on the countertop.

  8. Mstessyrue Says:

It was very important for the presidential candidates to address the questions from YouTube and the general public. However, thus far, most media attention has focused on the war in Iraq and recent scandals in the White House. There are critical topics of great importance that I would like to see our candidate address in the future, especially with global poverty. As one of the nation that has pledge to fulfill the goals of Millennium Development Project, whose goal is the elimination of world hunger and poverty, this administration has not shown any substantial action to bring this fundamental problem to a stop. According to the Borgen Project, dedicated to fighting and ending Poverty around the world, only $19 billion dollars are needed annually to stop world wide poverty, hunger and malnutrition. However, more than $340 billion dollars has been poured into this “war on terror.” And each year, our country has a military budge of $522 billion dollars. It’s time for a new leader who will be addressing an issue that affects 1.2 billion people everyday worldwide.

  9. mikey r Says:

WHY DOES ANYONE STILL GIVE THIS CLOWN A FORUM?

  10. dim wit Says:

Did he just suggest a return to the monarchy?
Novak must be saying this crap because he is realizing his own increasing irrelevance. Either that or he really believes in King George.

  11. The Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Novak. I can’t even say that without it sounding like a bad word. Truly what he said would only be said by an elitest.

  12. bluestatedon Says:

All patriotic Americans who support the troops will agree that the sight of Presidential candidates taking questions directly from the unwashed masses is disgusting. It’s positively demeaning to put the candidate in a position where they might be asked an embarrassing question, and besides, the possibility of transmitting disease is very high.

It’s far, far better to have questioners be thoroughly interrogated beforehand to make sure they’re patriotic, and then have their questions filtered through an impartial moderator such as Brit Hume.

Then we would be assured of good, positive questions like, “Mayor Giuliani, please describe your feelings when you were heroically standing on 9/11 rubble with the President. God Bless. Thank you.”

  13. pete Says:

  16. DJ Adequate Says:

The really telling thing here is the longing in his voice when he talks about doing away with monarchy. You can tell he never really agreed with that decision, and that is why he’s helping the Bush dynasty bring it back.

  17. The Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Novak is going to moderate the republican debate to be aired on Consrvatube.

  26. CT Scantonocity Says:

Not that they’ll take my advice, but here it is anyways:

Novak knows that TP is covering his comments. He knows that TP knows he thinks bloggers to beneath him. If effect, this he wants TP to cover him as much as possible for kicks, for his personal laughter. He gets a laugh out of it, so this won’t be the last time he repeats himself.

TP, one post is enough. Awareness that Novak hates bloggers is already established. This goes for the Romney campaign, too.

  27. ifthethunderdontgetya Says:

The Founders were afraid of something happening to our Republic, (”A Republic, if you can keep it” - Ben Franklin).

That thing is happening today. A president who believes he’s above the law, and a Republican party whose Senators and Representatives put party ahead of country and even their own Constitutional privleges.

Shame on Novak for carrying their water.

Strange, or is it, that an Independent Republican would be a major voice for the left. My vote is for Ron Paul

Opposing the Use of Military Force Against Iraq
    Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)
    October 10, 2002

I oppose the resolution authorizing military force against Iraq. The wisdom of the war is one issue, but the process and the philosophy behind our foreign policy are important issues as well. But I have come to the conclusion that I see no threat to our national security. There is no convincing evidence that Iraq is capable of threatening the security of this country, and, therefore, very little reason, if any, to pursue a war.

But I am very interested also in the process that we are pursuing. This is not a resolution to declare war. We know that. This is a resolution that does something much different. This resolution transfers the responsibility, the authority, and the power of the Congress to the President so he can declare war when and if he wants to. He has not even indicated that he wants to go to war or has to go to war; but he will make the full decision, not the Congress, not the people through the Congress of this country in that manner.

  30. Krazny Says:

Thing is Bush as appeals to the elite among the republican party, I mean c’mon he has never had to work hard in his life, but went to top schools, got great jobs, where he failed, and yet continued to get high paying jobs. Went into politics became Governor of Texas, then President of the US, all without ever really doing anything. He is a perfect product of the elite system.

  40. Krazny Says:

“You know when we did away with the monarchy and went through democracy, there was a lot of fear that this sort of thing would happen. It took 200 years but we got there.”

Where exactly is here? Isn’t the whole point of our system to allow the people to vote, and to decide the course of your country? The utube debate wasn’t perfect, far from, but it does show, that we the people can interact, and ask questions of those in power. Why would Novak find it so alarming?

  41. doeatdogi Says:

  43. Dr. Dog Says:

    Who is pete talking about?

  44. Maggie Says:

This just reveals how scared Republicans are about addressing issues which they don’t have a prepared party response for like they do for the war and terrorism. I would love to see a Republican actually answer questions about why aren’t we addressing root causes of terrorism and instability in the Middle East, like poverty and inequality, and instead throwing money away in an un-winnable war. They will do anything to avoid questions like these.

  47. calscientist Says:

So what is this Novak piece caught by Firedoglake today? Why on earth would Bush want to tick off the most successful group in Iraq with the longest standing ties to the US and what was once a positive vibe towards us? And if the FDL speculation is right, why would Rove leak this unless he is already looking to save his own posterior for posterity?

  48. trueblue Says:

    Comment by pete — July 30, 2007 @ 6:36 pm

I echo Pete’s sentiments to all of my new friends here at TP but I, too, no longer have the time, energy, or patience to waste sifting through the mountains of disgustingly moronic comments by the Trolls in order to have mature discourse with a kindred spirit. There are just too many other blog sites out there with registration and control of the trolls to continue to waste my time here. Sure, we’ve all heard how TP plans to do something about it - well, when does dragging your feet indicate complicity?? Something we’ve been complaining about with Congress and it’s occurring right here as well.

Keep up the good work with combatting trolls, good friends. It’s a worthy cause. I just neither have the time nor the inclination to spend attempting to determine whether I am speaking to the real Pete or the Faux Pete or the real Zooey or the Fake Zooey. Life is simply too short for such a nonsensical exercise. The name jacking, at least for me, is the final straw because only TP administration can control that; otherwise, we have no idea to whom we are speaking. We know that the trolls speak to themselves and pose as us which is certainly not something I intend to do now - or ever.

I believe that I have given Think Progress adequate warning and ample time to “clean up the trolls” and they have continued to fail to do so. I expect that this will drive intelligent posters away like the plague and TP will be left at the bottom of the heap if it continues to do nothing.

I’ll check back from time to time to say hi to my TP buddies but have made a conscious decision to not waste my time here fighting off juvenile delinquents and morons.

    A Stage Too Far

The youtube debate had too many performers–CNN/youtube, each and every video, and the candidates. The stage isn’t big enough for all the noise, costumes, props, and scripts, not when the goal is to listen to the candidates. Either pick “boring” videos of normal people or go back to a town hall format.

A large part of the videos on youtube seem to involve people who are drunk, drugged or just plain stupid. Yeah, that’s who I want to hear posing questions to presidential candidates. Maybe the candidates can also appear in sweats and dirty t-shirts to make themselves more appealing to “the masses.” ;)

  92. Chris Says:

Well, when you have people dressed up in costumes or puppets asking questions to presidential candidates, it does appear to be a somewhat silly venue.

I think this is a non-issue. If candidates don’t want to be asked questions about the environoment by a hand puppet, then it’s no big deal.

If they cleaned up the youtube forum to allow only questions, then it may actually be considered a competent forum.

a waste carrier. evidenced by his click and drag hair do,outdated clothes and cane.
