Specter gives WH one day to clarify Gonzales testimony.»

Following a classified briefing with the White House today, Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA), the ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, “gave the Bush administration 18 hours to resolve the controversy over apparent contradictions in Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’s congressional testimony”:

Specter aides released a statement late Monday that suggested a bombshell to come on Tuesday afternoon.

“Given the difficulty of discussing classified matters in public, I think it is preferable to have a letter addressing that question [of Gonzales’ veracity] from the administration … by noon tomorrow, which will be made available to the news media,” Specter wrote in the statement. “The administration has committed to producing such a letter.”

Specter expects the letter clarifying the attorney general’s testimony to be addressed to himself and Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), who declined to comment on the matter.

Specter was equally cagey, telling reporters to wait until Tuesday for any further comment from him.

Why is he giving him anytime? A statement under oath is a statement, and perjury is perjury.

Perhaps they have Gonzo in one of those “Damned if ya do, damned if ya don’t” thingies. As long as Gonzo gets to keep talking, he can spin and spin, but once it’s in print, he can’t talk it away. Maybe they’re going to make him commit to one lie, then bust him.

They’ll have to go to committe to formulate a vote on that one. It may take awhile.

  20. Jackie Says:

Every person in jail would love to have a do over. Specter is doing his best to protect the White House while trying to show he’s for the law. Specter in up to his neck in the secrets and crimes of the GOP. Yes the White House told him what he had to do to protect Gonzales. Now this is the Attorney General with over 500 employees he directs yet he has to come back and explain the lie he told under oath. Gonzales knows nothing will happen to him that’s why he was smiling at the committee. The GOP officials have a problem now. The White House has the check list of past crimes and money that changed hands for 6 years that could be used to destroy any GOP who votes against Gonzales. Specter will do as he’s told and nothing more.

  21. JPark Says:

There has never been a less scary Specter.

  22. Dr. Wu Says:

Specter’s a reliable whore for the administration when the chips are down. He builds his “street cred” with some faux-tough questions in hearings, but when the Chimpster is actually in trouble, he’s first in line to rush to his rescue.

“You’ve got 18 hours to explain yourself” = “If you make some shit up, I promise to help imbue it with as much credibility as I can.”

  23. KingCranky Says:

I so want to see this Administration slapped down so hard, but seeing as how he’s the ranking MINORITY member, just how is Arlen able to make demands of anyone, let alone an Administration that hasn’t listened to any of Specter’s blather before, when he was the Chairman of the Committee?

Now, if Arlen is actually able to do something useful here, I’ll be happy to apologize

  24. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

I wonder if Specter worked out a deal so that when the Congress goes on recess, Gonzo resigns, and Bush recess-appoints Specter to be the new AG.

Pure speculation, but it would be funny if it happened. Maybe not.

Really sorry about the confusion. I honestly didn’t try to mislead anyone.

    Honest.

  27. Lee J. Cobb Says:

I think he would recess appoint Jeb before that. He doesn’t care how it looks anymore. We don’t do anything anyway.

  28. Gregor Samsa Says:

Again, all this posturing is more for the next election cycle than for an actual rule of the law.

More smoke and mirrors from the GOP. The AG can lie to Congress with impunity, because it’s ok if you’re a Republican.

Until Specter actually does something worthwhile when the chips are down, he’s a reliable “talk tough, then cave” Republican.

So far, every time push came to shove, Specter let them shove him into his locker. He simply yelled, “Come on, guys” through the little vents.

Roberts condition will take time to see if he had any problems from this seizure. The media tried to make light of this problem but it’s no so black/white. Alot of complications can accrue that aren’t seen. Let’s hope Roberts takes time to talk to God and use this second chance to correct the mistakes he’s made. Yes he followed the GOP orders and has damaged the United States. Yes the Church is pushing him to do as they say but now Roberts got the wake up call that only God has the power and He is the only one you answer to. Roberts works with Justices that are really old yet he is the one in the hospital. Some people don’t get a second chance to correct the mistakes they’ve made while alive, let’s hope Roberts uses this second chance wisely.

Jeb is like Al Gore, in a very sad way. Obviously the more competent of the two Bush brothers, Jeb can’t figure out how his dumb-ass brother got the call from the rethugs to run for President the first time (his faith in the intelligence of the American electorate must really have been shaken after George “won” his second term). Jeb would have made a better President - not by much, but better nonetheless.

I’ll tell you exactly why–because, as liberals, we respect freedom and life, and won’t kill the enemy. We always let them get away with their crimes, so we are tasked with cleaning up their messes. it’s truly a quandary, because most of these “people” currently ruining our country belong in isolation in a big Spandau-type prison on a barren rock in the North Atlantic.

  149. Thomas M. Says:

The term “Quisling” is a (derisive) noun based on the name of the Norwegian Colonel who did the Nazi’s bidding against his fellow countrymen in Norway during WWII.
The term Specter should similarly become a noun: A person who consistently throws out red herrings trying to create the perception of action against, but always caving in to the opposition.

  156. AboveTheClouds Says:

Six-plus years of the Bush Administration proved once and for all and for all the world to see that what’s wrong with America isn’t the Demcratic Party and “liberals.” Bush will make being an electable Republican an impossibility in 2008. Like Rumsfeld, Bush will wait a day too long to cut Gonzales loose and by then it will be way too late to repair the damage he’s caused to the GOP who are now circling the political drain at ever-faster speeds. Chalk it up as another neocon/Karl Rove failure.

  157. Bruce Gorton Says:

    AboveTheClouds

Credit can’t go to Bush alone.

Guys like Ted Stevens (Who is now being raided by the FBI for links to VECO, an Alaskan oil services company) deserve some applause too.

  158. Carla J Says:

First, Specter has a problem..yes the BULLET theory being the first.

(It went in the govenor out the shoulder up a hill, past the neck around head in and out again..WHY did we not use this technology in Iraq!)

Second, Specter wanted to have the records of Alito and Roberts challenegd the other day. Didn’t HE GIVE THE BIG VOTE FOR THESE TWO along with long time Republican Stevens of Alaska? Now Specter questioning their RECORD?

Democrat charges U.S. justices “duped” Senate

    FRI JUL 27, 2007 6:13PM EDT

    Featured Broker sponsored link

    BY THOMAS FERRARO
WASHINGTON (REUTERS) - U.S. CHIEF JUSTICE JOHN ROBERTS AND SUPREME COURT JUSTICE SAMUEL ALITO “DUPED” THE U.S. SENATE INTO CONFIRMING THEM, A TOP DEMOCRATIC LAWMAKER CHARGED ON FRIDAY, DAYS AFTER A KEY REPUBLICAN QUESTIONED IF THEY HAD LIVED UP TO THEIR PROMISES.

SEN. CHARLES SCHUMER OF NEW YORK, A MEMBER OF THE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE THAT HELD HEARINGS ON THE TWO, SAID THEY STAKED OUT MODERATE POSITIONS IN CONGRESSIONAL TESTIMONY BUT BECAME PART OF A CONSERVATIVE BLOC THAT ISSUED RESTRICTIVE RULINGS ON ISSUES FROM FREE SPEECH TO CIVIL RIGHTS.
SCHUMER, IN A SPEECH TO THE AMERICAN CONSTITUTION SOCIETY, TALKED ABOUT THE CONFIRMATION OF ROBERTS AND ALITO IN 2005 AND 2006, RESPECTIVELY.
    “WERE WE DUPED?” HE ASKED.

“WERE WE TOO EASILY IMPRESSED BY THE CHARM OF NOMINEE ROBERTS AND THE ERUDITION OF NOMINEE ALITO?” SCHUMER ASKED. “DID WE MISTAKENLY VOTE OUR HOPES WHEN OUR FEARS WERE MORE THAN JUSTIFIED BY THE ULTRACONSERVATIVE RECORDS OF THESE TWO MEN?”

    “YES,” HE SAID.

HIS COMMENTS CAME DAYS AFTER SEN. ARLEN SPECTER OF PENNSYLVANIA, A MODERATE REPUBLICAN, SAID HE INTENDED TO REVIEW THE CONGRESSIONAL TESTIMONY OF ROBERTS AND ALITO.

THE POLITICO, A WASHINGTON-BASED NEWSPAPER, QUOTED SPECTER AS SAYING HE WANTED TO SEE IF ROBERTS AND ALITO HAD “LIVED UP” TO THEIR PROMISES TO RESPECT LEGAL PRECEDENTS.

    http://www.reuters.com/ article/ politicsNews/ idUSN2729913220070727
Isn’t that illegal and considered treason if they HAD NOT done things by following legally precedent? Wasn’t that Specters Job to look for BEFORE he confirmed these two? Now he’s doing the SAME with Gonzie??

Third, Specter has all of a sudden grown a heart to give Gonzie one more chance? Wait isnt fixing the record forgery or treason or something? You can just DISREGARD the legal process! - oh wait… Specter HAS and he will continue to backtracj and DISREGARD… Why?

Next, now an all to young and robust healthy Chief Justice Roberts has allegedly had a stroke and a seizure of unknown origin - maybe had something to do with Specter looking around and asking questions he REALLY does not WANT to ask about the “record”

Lastly, it looks HORRIBLE that these guys are Republians getting republicans. Specter is on Gonzie (but giving him ANOTHER chance), he’s questioning Alito (who is supposedly in Latvia teaching law) and Roberts record and Specters long time friend and longest serving Republican in US History R- Alaksa Stevens was invaded by Feds for alleged “insider” pay offs? by the way, the company ALREADY plead guilty to giving other legislators “deals”

Smells like a BIGGER story to me. There is FIGHTING AMOUNG the siblings!

I think SPECTER is the NEW red headed step child of George!

WHO will push the law here?

    #43 - “Little parrots.” Comment by Dr. Dog — July 31, 2007 @ 12:26 am

“Dr. Dog says: Gonzales didn’t lie! Buk-buk-bu-caw!”
“Dr. Dog says: Bush is smart! Troll-ie want’s a crakcer!”

When you can bring yourself to stop “parroting” the party line you’ve been given to spout, maybe someone will take you seriously. Don’t hold your breath. It won’t be any time soon.

  161. Dick Says:

Specter is like the enabling mother who buys and brings her (comfortably captive) 900lb. bedridden son a bag of burgers a couple roasted chickens and a gallon of milk, then cries ‘he needs help’.

  162. pete Says:

Specter will not do anything rash. That’s why he’s asking for a letter. It gives the WH a chance to weasel-word an explanation that doesn’t mean anything. Specter will say he put them to the fire and made them comply, and that will be the end of it. Remember, Arlen Specter is the inventor of the Magic Bullet.

  163. osage Says:

Specter worked a deal with Bush/Cheney to give the “appearance” that the WH is trying to cooperate with the investigation committee, but it will result in Gonzales remaining as AG. Anything short of Gonzales resigning or being fired is unacceptible! Any Democrat who accepts any kind of “deal” from this WH concerning Gonzales or the firing of USAs should be run out of town on a rail. This is more of the same. Specter is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, nothing more.

  164. osage Says:

Why does Gonzales get “do overs” when criminals being tried in every court in the land aren’t repeatedly asked if they’d like to change their “perjurous” testimony? What kind of investigation is that? Where’s the accountability in that? Where’s the deterence in that? Where’s the justice in that?

  165. bilbobaggins Says:

Ok, now this is getting ridiculous. First they tell Gonzales that he can change his testimony and now they are asking the White House to “resolve the controversy”. Why are they trying to let Gonzales off the hook? What’s going on here.

    Impeach Gonzales!

  166. bilbobaggins Says:

They are supposed to go out there and post pretending they are a liberal, say something outrageous and then they can go back to another moniker and attack themselves for their previous post. It’s pretty transparent.

and then ignore the shit out of it.

  170. Mark F. Says:

Let’s keep in mind that this is Arlen Specter–king of the empty threat. I suspect no matter what the White House says, Specter will declare the issue settled and urge the committee to move on.

Specter is 100% Pure USDA Approved Spineless Republican Con Man. All talk–no action.

It’s troll masturbation. They never learned that attacking yourself creates dark circles under the eyes and hair on the palms. It also leads to insanity, which is the most obvious symptom we see.
