This afternoon on MSNBC, Tucker Carlson expressed sympathy for Brookings analyst Kenneth Pollack, who has been “slammed by the left” all day. “It’s worth pointing out that you were not an apologist for the administration,” said Carlson. “You’ve been really tough on them.” Carlson said that the response to the New York Times op-ed by Pollack and Michael O’Hanlon has been “over the top” by the blogosphere, which is “a pretty hysterical place anyway.” He went on to criticize a post by Glenn Greenwald, whose name he repeatedly mispronounced. Watch it:
ThinkProgress has compiled a list of O’Hanlon and Pollack’s “tough” comments HERE.
Transcript:
POLLACK: Now that is by far and away the best security situation we saw in Iraq. But it’s huge. It is a very important change from 2005 and it suggests that over time, we may be able to get there with other parts of the country too.
CARLSON: You’re taking quite a risk in writing that, as I’m sure you’ve discovered today. The response to your piece has been ferocious and really really tough. I mean, you’ve been attacked — I don’t know if you’ve had time to look online, but you’re all over everywhere, being slammed by the left. It’s worth pointing out that you were not an apologist for the administration. You’ve been really tough on them.
****
CARLSON: Steve, the response to this piece has been over the top. I mean, the online — the blogger — community, such as it is, is a pretty hysterical place anyway. But this is some guy named Glenn Greenwald — Grenwald — Greenwald, whatever. Some guy who writes on Salon. This “Op-Ed is an exercise in rank deceit from the start.” These two “are among the primary authors and principal deceivers responsible for this disaster.” It goes on for 11 pages. It doesn’t really address their reporting, which is to say, actually, some things are going better than we hoped.

Tucker counted web pages.
That’s some research he’s got goin’ there.
I wonder if he’s counted the days left on his last broadcasting contract?
July 30th, 2007 at 7:48 pmHysterical bloggers?
As opposed to being a hysterical talk show host?
July 30th, 2007 at 7:49 pmWell, I for one am happy that they made this douche bage stop wearing the fu*king Orville Redenbacher bow tie.
July 30th, 2007 at 7:49 pmPolitics is fun.
July 30th, 2007 at 7:50 pmsome things are going better than we hoped.
I believe today’s death toll is 58 civilians, three US military personnel.
What the hell was the Birdseye heiress “hoping” for?
July 30th, 2007 at 7:52 pmAt least he didn’t bring up the LGF pulled-out-of-their-ass talking point on Greenwald.
July 30th, 2007 at 7:52 pmMeet Tucker Carlson, idiot.
July 30th, 2007 at 7:54 pmI think the mothers and family members of those killed in Iraq are justifiably hysterical.
Why do these guys bring up the bloggers if they lack credibility so much?
July 30th, 2007 at 7:55 pmTucker Carlson is so insignificant that my dog wouldn’t even scratch at him if he was a flea.
July 30th, 2007 at 7:55 pm(My apology to fleas)
Does anyone take Tucker seriously?
July 30th, 2007 at 7:56 pmI think MSNBC employs him for comic relief.
TP you could provide the examples of whatever criticism these O’hanlon and Pollack guys had of the admin. So we can see what the fuss is about.
July 30th, 2007 at 7:57 pmTucker PRETENDED to not know Glenn Greenwald. If he’s indeed done that kind of research to know what the buzz is all about, he knows of Greenwald.
If he’s involved with politics and has access a computer, he knows Greenwald.
He’s trying to pretend he never heard of him, to make Greenwald sound like a nobody. Too bad for Ticker, all the maneuver did was give Greenwald more publicity.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:05 pmAs we approach September, this kind of talk will increase in every day and the rosy picture about Iraq will be the talk of these pundits, like Tucker.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:06 pmI have to wonder what these two assclowns were paid to write this advertisement for BushCo.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:08 pmThe right has painted itself into a corner, and has been overcome by the fumes. They have nothing factual, so ad hominem is the order of the day. Two bozos go into Iraq, stay at a hotel for 3 days, and come back with preprogrammed Bushco propaganda. Big surprise.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:09 pmLooks like we (the blogging left) have become the new gay/communist/black/insert your favorite hated group here, threat to “The American Way”.
These guys are getting scared. Remember to say, “BOO!” to every rethug you meet.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:10 pmWhy is the Left so full of hate?
July 30th, 2007 at 8:11 pmI’ll believe the war is going well when it’s over.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:12 pmTucker has gotten more whiny and hysterical since his neck got too fat for the bow tie.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:12 pmYes, but who cares what Tucker thinks. Just ignore the dummy.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:13 pmYes, but who cares what Tucker thinks. Just ignore the dummy.
Comment by Jay Randal — July 30, 2007 @ 8:13 pm
He’s like a troll. He’s ridiculous and you just can’t help wanting to whack him.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:14 pmGlenn Greenwald is a very respectable commenter on the current political scene. He is insightful, fair, and above all, intellectually honest. Carlson posseses none of these traits.
“Grenwald, whatever,” indeed.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:17 pmIgnore Tucker > his spews mean nothing to anybody.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:17 pmgive us an EXAMPLE of the “left being full of hateâ€
ok
July 30th, 2007 at 8:17 pmGreenwald is one of the best, maybe even THE best.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:19 pmDon’t you hate traitors?
July 30th, 2007 at 8:19 pmComment by Mr. NeoCON — July 30, 2007 @ 8:17 pm
One commenter, who is probably you in disguise, Mr Pee, does not represent the entire “left.”
Stop trying to stir up the crap.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:20 pmOnly an idiot like Carlson could be paid to not be able to pronounce the name “greenwald”.
Turker Carlton? Tugger Carson? wha?..
Green + wald = Greenwald
July 30th, 2007 at 8:20 pm“TP you could provide the examples of whatever criticism these O’hanlon and Pollack guys had of the admin. So we can see what the fuss is about. Comment by ForTruth “
They have already done that in another thread. Why don’t you do some research before posting. The point is that these two idiots never really criticized Bush’s handling of the Iraq fiasco, so they are liars to boot.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:21 pmDon’t you hate traitors?
Comment by Osama bin Bush — July 30, 2007 @ 8:19 pm
Nice.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:21 pm” Another spoiled little RICH KID, whose Daddy gave him what he has.
Just like TRAITOR Bush…
Comment by George W. Bin Laden — July 30, 2007 @ 8:05 pm
Comment by Mr. NeoCON”
Ok, Mr. NeoCON, what is hateful about that. It is all the truth. Since when did the truth become hate?
July 30th, 2007 at 8:23 pmThe tie is a phallic symbol — a particularly accurate one in Carlson’s case. When this Shitler Youth is finally proven wrong about everything linked to this retardministration, can we then, please, cane his sorry ass for hours in front of the Lincoln Memorial? It would be the fair and balanced thing to do.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:26 pmMr. NeoCON,
There were some much better of examples of what might be called hate just posted about Justice Roberts. You should use those as your examples instead.
People vent sometimes. Bill O’Reilly has turned his career into exploiting this human foible.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:27 pmThe truth is hate to the ratwing. They hate the truth, because it exposes their treason and calumny. The Right lies about the Left, the Left gets pissed. The Left tells the truth about the Right, the Right gets pissed. As it ever was.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:27 pmI do believe that the trolls have been re-programmed to try a new track. They now pretend that they are liberals and say outrageous things so that they can then go back to their troll persona and point fingers at themselves and say “see - the left is full of hate”, or “see, the left don’t know what they are talking about”. It’s pretty obvious to me when they do it, so no harm done, I guess.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:28 pmWhy is the Left so full of hate?
Comment by Mr. NeoCON — July 30, 2007 @ 8:11 pm
Why is the right full of idiots?
July 30th, 2007 at 8:28 pmThe truth is seen as hate because the right is filled with a bunch of pu$$ies. Fu*king pansies.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:29 pmWow, I wish that TP had half the technology that redstate.org has. This morning I created an account and posted a few things. I came home tonight and they did something so that I can no longer even view redstate.com. When I go to that URL I get a blank page. I’m surprised they didn’t serve me up a blank page with a big finger on it. Wouldn’t you just love to see that happen to the trolls on this site? The next time they tried to come here they were greeted by a blank page. That would be very cool.
But, in reality, I would rather put up with the trolls than know that the site I was posting to would not allow any dissenting opinions. If that happened, we would be no better than they are.
Being a liberal is kind of messy, but worth it.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:36 pm37. can’t argue with that, SB.

Somebody else told the same story here. When they ban you, you can’t even read their propaganda anymore.
Oh well.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:38 pmWow, I wish that TP had half the technology that redstate.org has. This morning I created an account and posted a few things. I came home tonight and they did something so that I can no longer even view redstate.com. When I go to that URL I get a blank page.

They did the same thing to me yesterday.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:39 pmNow that Liberals are into the blogging game guys like Tucker are having a breakdown?
I had no idea that Tucker was so sensitive.

I know, but I didn’t feel like going on a mission to point out the obvious.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:46 pmOkay, Tucker is a hopeless imbecile, but what a great dancer!
July 30th, 2007 at 8:49 pmOver time? Would that be in this lifetime or the next??
Tucker couldn’t carry Glenn’s jockstrap. Why this Rethuglican waterboy still has a TV show escapes me.

Hey, husband of a 15-year-old, I want to eat some humble pie here, and say that I may well have been wrong in accusing you of namejacking Sgt. Sherman’s name.
As I’ve gotten to know you better, I think I may have been mistaken.
I’ve also learned more about how TP works and doesn’t work. I think that post that willy saw may well have been a post by The Joker that just happened to go through for a bit before it got zapped.
I apologize.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:50 pmI apologize.

No problem.
Comment by Mr. NeoCON — July 30, 2007 @ 8:52 pm
Good.
Now, do you happen to have Eck’s phone number?
July 30th, 2007 at 8:54 pmI laughed out loud. “Not really address their reporting.” Ha ha hahahaha. Wow, Glenn is going to be pissed but I couldn’t be happier. The fact that he feels the need to respond to it and so completely lie about it means that it’s working. They didn’t just randomly pick a post. They picked Glenn Greenwald, whose research is far more thorough than theirs.
It means they’re scared of it. They’re scared of facts. They’re scared of their own words in print, and they’re scared of their ghosts on video.
It’s victory, slowly but surely.
Next up, Internet non-neutrality. Expect Carlson to be a big fan of that, and fast.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:57 pmIf only Tucker could read…
July 30th, 2007 at 8:57 pmIt’s worth pointing out that you were not an apologist for the administration. You’ve been really tough on them.
Well, more of the same from the same Bush loyalists: When reality doesn’t agree with their opinion, they deny it and substitute it with their own, rosy version, where everything is going as -nay, better than- planned.
Pure wishful thinking from the same idiotic lot.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:01 pmABC News just a did a pretty good job (for MSM) of putting the PollackOHanlon op-ed in perspective. They noted the lack of political progress in Iraq, new reports that were less optimistic about the military progress, the fact that the Administration was passing this op-ed out as “propaganda”, and that the Republicans on the Hill were not likely to be affected by this single piece from the newspaper.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:14 pm“It’s worth pointing out that you were not an apologist for the administration. You’ve been really tough on them.”
The neoCONs version of being really tough on Bush:
“Well, he really didn’t plan this thing very well. But, other than that, things are going great!”
July 30th, 2007 at 9:20 pmOh Jebus, Tucker, nice tie (that is the only think worth responding to with him)
July 30th, 2007 at 9:22 pmTucker Carlson, I’m sure, knows perfectly well who Glenn Greenwald is. His purpose, in intentionally mispronouncing Greenwald’s name, is to try to bully Greenwald by pretending he’s so insignificant it’s not even worth trying to pronounce his name correctly. A mind-numbingly inane tactic, one that makes Carlson look like a total idiot. Which, perhaps, he is.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:29 pmThe authors of the op-ed advocated for the illegal invasion of Iraq. They claimed they criticized the mishandling of the war but wrote rosy articles about the situation in Iraq anyway. The Dems are moving little by little to cut off funding for the occupation and withdrawing or redeploying the troops. The authors go to Iraq for several days and then write the op-ed saying there has been significant progress in Iraq. The authors then conclude the op-ed by saying that the Iraq occupation should be handed over to the next president. I think they’re looking for some sort of vindication as is everyone who advocating for the illegal invasion.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:32 pmHe’s a piece of crap talking t.v. mannequin.
People who watch this crap on T.V. are wasting their lives.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:44 pmTucker thinks he punked Greenwald by intentionally mispronouncing his name, but the reality is that Glenn is laughing his butt off at this juvenile MSNBC assclown. It’s not really worth Greenwald’s time to respond, but if he does he’ll chew Tucker up and spit him out, bow tie or no. It’ll be Florida-Ohio State all over again.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:44 pmSend in the Jon Stewart to eat this guys lunch again.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:46 pmProgressive America Times actually found an article one of these guys wrote supporting the surge back in January
Progressive America Times
July 30th, 2007 at 9:57 pmI watch Tucker to see a good liar work the news. He’s bought and paid for RNC. Once you understand that, everything he says makes sense in its own perverted way.
July 30th, 2007 at 10:34 pmTucker has really small feet. I think you know what I mean.
July 30th, 2007 at 10:55 pmI’ve never looked at Tucker’s feet.
July 30th, 2007 at 11:01 pmTiny
July 30th, 2007 at 11:02 pmTucker has become even more hysterical since Larry Flynt busted Vittner. Wonder why?
July 30th, 2007 at 11:16 pmJon Stewart needs to punk on his ass again.
July 30th, 2007 at 11:40 pmFunny. I would think the last thing someone like Tucker Carlson would want to do is highlight somone who does a wide breadth of research to backup typically airtight and fiendishly sharp logic.
That type of person being, of course, Glen Greenwald.
I dare Tucker Carlson to have Glen Greenwald on his show and debate him mano a mano.
p.s. Tucker, you’re a terrible actor. Pretending to mispronounce someone’s name is not only incredibly childish, but also shows that the target of that “mispronounciation” is a source of fear to you.
Ghandi said it: First they ignore you. Then they mock you. Then they attack you. Then you win.
Looks like we’re somewhere between mocking and attacking. Which is halfway, and we’ve got all the momentum baby.
Keep rolling Progressives. When the neocon apologists are reduced to deliberately misprouncing names, it means they’ve got the fear.
July 31st, 2007 at 12:35 amI can’t believe everyone is going on about Glenn’s name, and missing the more major point. Tucker said Glenn didn’t “really address the reporting.”
Considering Glenn’s entire post was about the reporting, it was beyond deceitful, practically slanderous. Considering how carefully Glenn constructs his arguments, it was also beyond idiotic, verging into drool puddle territory.
July 31st, 2007 at 1:26 amnot only that, renegade iconoclast, but it would really help for tucker to have noted that glenn actually COMPILED a series of lengthy quotes, from o’hanlon and comrade, which demonstrate that both, indeed, not only supported the invasion, the occopation and surge, but that the also crafted the military “stategies” AND intellectual justifications with which to present to the public at large. glenn’s arguments are, as always, air tight.
July 31st, 2007 at 2:01 amTucker is a child, an annoying whiny child. Can we please get some grown ups to report the news in a professional manner?
July 31st, 2007 at 2:57 amI was amused how Tucker pretended that he never heard of Glenn Greenwald. On his Monday show, Tucker feined an inability to pronounce Greenwald’s name. Clearly, Tucker is frightened that more people read Greenwald’s blog than watch Tucker’s show.
July 31st, 2007 at 3:25 amAnyone know if Carlson is on his way out at MSNBC? There are rumors that his days are numbered. His hysterical rants are clear proof of his spoiled background. He claims he’s a libertarian , when in fact he is always agreeing with the Republicans. His whining voice and carping are hard to watch and listen to. The trouble is, the competing news channels are a vast wasteland. The NYT Op-Ed piece by Pollack and O”Hanlon was clearly part of the Bush propaganda machine. How else was Carlson able to so quickly get Pollack on his show?
July 31st, 2007 at 8:58 amLike he doesn’t know who Greenwald is. Baloney.
July 31st, 2007 at 9:39 amTucker is the kid who thinks he’s the smartest in the class. He thinks all his little games make him cool. But he is just another shill for the ruling class. He is not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
July 31st, 2007 at 9:58 amHe’s an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
Advise the prince; no doubt, an easy tool,
Deferential, glad to be of use,
Politic, cautious, and meticulous;
Full of high sentence, but a bit obtuse;
At times, indeed, almost ridiculous—
Almost, at times, the Fool.–apologies to TS Eliot
Tucker is an idiot who is best ignored.
July 31st, 2007 at 10:03 amor I guess bowtie could have asked ‘Grenwald’ to debate on air…just saying
July 31st, 2007 at 10:10 amI’m very sure Tucker is aware of who Glenn Greenwald is, considering Glenn did a post about how he was supposed to appear on Tucker’s show to discuss David Vitter . He wasn’t able to do so because of scheduling conflicts. Tucker’s view was that the Vitter matter was private and we should leave the whole thing alone and Glenn was coming on to disagree, because Tucker didn’t behave that way with the Clintons and seemed to be salivating over the details daily.
July 31st, 2007 at 10:14 amWhat followed, was a post Glenn did, that basically ripped Tucker a new one over his hypocrisy between then and now. I don’t think Glenn is one of Tucker’s favorite people now!
Tucker is a tool; he and his fabulous ratings are on for the same reason glen beck has a show-faux news imitation-like CSI Peoria, CSI Houston. When you start to run low on second stringers-Tucker and Glen!
July 31st, 2007 at 10:20 amAs opposed to being a hysterical talk show host?
Tucker’s not hysterical. Just vapid, stupid and boring. Also the son of Satan. But that’s another story.
July 31st, 2007 at 10:21 amA war cannot be in the state of “going well.” A war, by nature, is a failure of diplomacy - a direct result of things reaching the apex of not “going well.”
If someone is having a heart attack and you are have finished the CPR chest compressions you don’t turn to the person next to you and say. “Time for the assisted breathing, this resuscitation is going well.”
If a general says we are meeting our goals and issues reports about specific objectives, that’s one thing. But for TV pundits to be arguing in such a vapid manner about how “well” a war is going, we have serious problems as a society.
A war is won when it has achieved all intended goals, and/or one side quits, surrenders, or in some way gives in to the other warring parties demands. Until then, it’s just a war.
Please pray tell, who is going to quit, surrender, or give into our demands? And what exactly is our objective again? Or perhaps the pundits should start debating if this is really even a “war” anymore?
Right wingers have already destroyed the words “liberal,” “terror,” “compassion,” and “Commander in Chief.” I’d never guess that they could completely rewrite the definition of the United States being “at war.”
July 31st, 2007 at 10:25 amThis morning on The Bill Press Show, in discussing why he felt the Republican candidates are right to duck out of the CNN/YouTube debate, Tucker said, “Why should they take questions from weird people? We’re the ones who should be asking questions. We’re educated, informed and know the right questions to ask.” So, Tucker, the Prince Heather, at least came clean that he disdains voters, and the American People in general.
Where’s Jon Stewart when you need him? Didn’t he take this little jerk down once and for good in 2004?
July 31st, 2007 at 10:52 amAd hominem name-calling (”hysterical”)is what you do when you don’t have facts or logic on your side, which is why name-calling is Tucker Carlson’s forte.
Glenn Greenwald is 1000 times smarter and more intellectually honest than Tucker Carlson. Just read a couple of Greenwald’s posts and compare them to anything Carlson has ever said or written and the disparity is obvious.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:10 amGreenwald’s post is “11 pages” long? Interesting way to measure the size of a post. I usually use kilobytes myself. Three to seven KB is a standard personal note, 10 to 15 KB is a normal editorial, at 20+ KB, I warn people that it’s a substantial piece. By copying Greenwald’s post into Mozilla’s Seamonkey webwriter program (It’s coding of the document is very lean, so it’s about the same kilobyttage you get in Notepad) and saving it, I get 31 KB. Yeah, that’s pretty long, but it’s mostly quotes that Greenwald uses to illustrate what complete hacks Pollack and O’Hanlon are.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:20 amIs he really Karl Rove’s leather slave?
July 31st, 2007 at 11:32 amNooooo.
The bow-tie is gone!
What a sell out.
July 31st, 2007 at 12:25 pmTucker Carlson…he must be the comedian on MSNBC. If Tucker was actually interested in real journalism and being credible, he would have done some actual research on O’Hanlon and Pollack in order to find out what both men had said in the past. I mean, both mean have in the past claimed that “the next six months are crucial” back in 2006, and yes, both men were cheerleaders for the war. Tucker just pulled that “you’ve actually been tough on the administration” outta his ass, just like Charlie Gibson did yesterday.
Our media is so pathetically lazy.
July 31st, 2007 at 3:23 pmI can believe that Tucker doesn’t really know who Glenn Greenwald is. It all makes sense if you assume that somebody just handed him a printed copy of Greenwald’s post and told him what to think about it before shooting. Thus the Grenwald/Greenwald mixup, and the 11 pages comment.
Who’s not doing their reporting now, Tucker?
July 31st, 2007 at 8:45 pmDid any of you happen to see Tucker’s show last night? He referred to Hillary Clinton as “a chick” and Obama as “a black guy.” I blasted off an email to him and to MSNBC about his remarks. I vow I will NEVER watch this very shrill and hysterical Koolaid drinker again. I say we start emailing HIS sponsors too and see if we can’t rid MSNBC of this idiot.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:35 pmSow hatred, reap hatred.
August 1st, 2007 at 7:10 amCreeps like Tucker allow Bush and others to get away with outrageous lies. See these two links for examples of just how crazy it really is: here’s a huge burden of guilt to be laid at Mr. Bush, Mr. Clinton, both parties for simply lying to the American people.
