Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington called on embattled Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) to “immediately step down from his position on the Appropriations subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies,” which funds the Department of Justice. Yesterday, Roll Call reported that Taxpayers for Common Sense will make a similar request.
Couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:23 amI assume the Republic Party will support CREW 100%, given all the noise they have made about Jefferson, down in LA. Sauce for the goose . . .
July 31st, 2007 at 11:26 amIf Stevens steps down, who will be left that understands the “system” of tubes” that is the Internet to such a penetrating and insightful degree?
The rest of those fools probably think the Internet is a dump truck.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:26 amSure. Right. That’ll happen. In other news today, a large snowstorm is headed towards hell, where the frozen tundra….
July 31st, 2007 at 11:27 amI agree. Mr. Stevens could use paid administrative leave.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:28 amSenator Stevens response.. “NO!!!”
July 31st, 2007 at 11:28 amThe more I hear about CREW the better I like it.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:29 amObviously the Stalinists at CREW hate America. They should be rounded up and executed without trial.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:31 amscience commitee???the man who thinks the internet is a series of tubes,not a dump truck…oh boy…
July 31st, 2007 at 11:38 amThe second Republican senator in less than a month got himself in trouble. Senator David Vitter/ the D.C.madam and the [family values] issue.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:38 amand now Senator Stevens with money issues.
Not good news for GOP politics trying to survive the Senate.
Unfortunately there’s no “incentive” for Stevens to resign. He can borrow a play stright out of the Karl Rove playbook: first, pretend you don’t hear the call, then when the chorus is so deafening, have your crooked buddies say they still have trust in you, then when they wera that one out you fall back on out and out lying. Stevens knows the Democrats won’t do a goddamn thing about it.
He’s an “Incredible Hulk” all right — an incredible hulk of steaming crap.

Namejacking, or just wry humor? Please clarify, VK.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:46 amStevens strategy:
July 31st, 2007 at 11:46 amDeny deny deny deny. Then if/when found guilty, blame the booze!
So, do you object to investigating a member of Congress, in spite of the overwhelming appearence of rank corruption by that member? You want this member to continue to influence the spending of our money during the investigaion into his apparent corruption? Do you really think that this is a “conservative value”? CREW’s request is Stalinist? In what sense? Executed without trial? Do you even know who Stalin was?
You don’t make sense. You are angry to the point of violence, and you have no one to blame but yourself. The self-realization that you are both a very poor judge of character and incapable of rational thought must have caused you to come unhinged.
Poor fella.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:46 amGREAT!
KEEP SURGING
GET EVEN MORE CORRUPT !!!
These republicans will be eviscerated in the next election.
I predict a 68-32 Democratic Senate in 2009
Senate Repo-thugs will have harry reids nuts on their chin for years to come.
Enjoy!

Don’t bring the hammr down too hard on VK, Marcus. There’s no way VK meant post #8 in earnest…either it’s tongue-in-cheek, or he’s the latest victim of the TP namejacker.
By his failure to subsequently clarify his position, I’m assuming it’s the latter.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:51 amIn other news today, the WH announced clarification on Dick Cheney’s status as a ‘Unique Creature’…
Given the fact he is not categorized as congressional or executive branch, officials have set up an office at the D.C. Zoo.
Disputes to his species origin, primate or hawk, have been settled.
Visitors should be forewarned that this creature has been known to hurl feces & shout obscenities. Please warn your children.
July 31st, 2007 at 11:53 amSorry for the ostensible friendly-fire shooting of one of my own. These days, in the heat of the ideological battle, if you look like a troll (and the snark isn’t obvious), I open fire.
July 31st, 2007 at 12:01 pmWhat about William Jefferson, hmmmm….?
July 31st, 2007 at 12:01 pmC’mon guys, it’s me and it’s over-the-top sarcasm! I thought that the contradiction between the two sentences (first call them Stalinists, then suggest executions without trial) was so outrageous that it couldn’t be mistaken for a serious comment.
But you guys are right: the Reich-wingers are actually so crazy they do say things like that in all seriousness.
And thanks for worrying about me. I appreciate it.
July 31st, 2007 at 12:02 pmMaybe he’ll bunk w/Stevens.
July 31st, 2007 at 12:02 pmNext time I will use the customary \sarcasm off label.

Checkout http://beyonddelay.org . I don’t think any corrupt congressman should remain in office. Two wrongs do not make a right. Just because Jefferson stays does not mean that Stevens should. They should both step down. I have four children. I always have to explain to them that they cannot do something wrong, just because someone else does.

More right wing justification using the “two wrongs make a right” logic. If EITHER of these guys had any moral compass, they would resign.
July 31st, 2007 at 12:15 pmSince Stevens is a major pork-barrell spender, this seems an appropriate thread for an item TP seems to have missed:
Washington, D.C. – The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) today charged Senate and House conferees on ethics and lobbying reform with fleecing American taxpayers by gutting earmark reform.
Following the conclusion of secret negotiations intended to bypass the normal legislative process, the compromise bill that was announced today will gut the earmark reform provisions that had already passed as part of S. 1, the Senate ethics and lobbying reform bill, and which already exist in the rules of the House. The conference deal makes a mockery of the promise of “the most ethical Congress in history,†which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) claimed she would establish when Democrats took over in January, 2007.

TP was quick to praise Dems when this bill first came up. Surely they will want to blast all those responsible for gutting the bill, whether Republican or Democrat. ;)

So, according to you, it is OK for Stevens to stay, as well as any other corrupt republicans, because Jefferson is there? If I shoot someone, and get away with it, is it OK for you to run around shooting people? Two wrongs do not make a right. People like you are why I am not Christian.

You are the one that brought up Jefferson as an excuse not to boot Stevens, not me.
2 different cases. Different crimes, different trials when they come to trial.
Since you wield so much power “in your own mind”, why don’t you boot both of them Daryll?

This is why I continue to state that the democratic party is full of contradictions and hypocrisy. They have no guts. They let us have our way within the house and senate. Didn’t Nancy say that she would alter a lot of rules and issues within the house?
