gonchen.jpg

I’m a big fan of Al’s,” Vice President Cheney said yesterday, referring to Alberto Gonzales. He dismissed Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy’s lack of trust in Gonzales as irrelevant. “I’ve had my differences with Pat Leahy,” Cheney said.

The Iraqi parliament adjourned yesterday for a month-long recess without passing key laws “concerning oil investment and revenue-sharing among regions, the re-integration of former members of Saddam Hussein’s Baathist regime into government, and provincial elections.”

65 percent: Number of people under the age of 30 who are “paying at least some attention to the 2008 presidential campaign,” according to a New York Times/CBS News poll. That number is up considerably from July 2003, when just “36 percent of those under age 30 were paying attention to the election.”

Federal prosecutors may have differed with their political bosses at the Justice Department over how aggressively to pursue fraud charges against the maker of the narcotic painkiller OxyContin. The NYT reports “higher-ups within the Justice Department appeared initially to favor a less aggressive approach to the case against OxyContin’s producer.”

The House yesterday passed four bills to “to improve counseling and care for the tens of thousands of military personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder.” One “requires the Department of Veterans Affairs to provideoutreach and mental health services to those who served in either campaign.”

The Federal Communications Commission will meet today to “set the rules for the government’s biggest auction of wireless airwaves, with Google Inc. fighting against carriers such as AT&T Inc. to force the winning bidders to open up the spectrum to more users.”

Former Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty has found a new home. He will be joining the law firm Baker & McKenzie “where he’ll work in the business crimes and investigations practice.” McNulty, who was embroiled in the U.S. attorney scandal, left the DoJ, citing “financial realities of college-age children.”

“The U.S. will hit its debt limit of nearly $9 trillion in early October, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson told Congress on Monday, and asked lawmakers to raise the limit ‘as soon as possible.’” Markos writes. “That’s your ‘fiscally responsible’ [conservatives] once again at work. Record deficits, record debts, record mismanagement of our nation’s fiscal health.”

And finally: UPI’s White House correspondent Helen Thomas is miffed at Garry Trudeau’s portrayal of her in one of his comic strips. One of the characters in the strip jokes that Thomas has “been here since the Truman administration! Some say she was Truman’s lover.” Thomas, who has been covering the White House since 1961, responded, “I wish he’d said I was Jack Kennedy’s lover.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Ah those Borrow and Spend Republicans!!!!

They are not the party of fiscal conservatism, and they never have been. They will lower taxes, but they wont cut spending. So at some point you will have to pay for the borrowing that will ensue, which effectively makes those tax cuts, merely deferrals.

“The NYT reports “higher-ups within the Justice Department appeared initially to favor a less aggressive approach to the case against OxyContin’s producer.”

Well, that’s a no-brainer. The Bush Administration has never met a corporation they didn’t like. They certainly would not side with the people over a corporation. This is the party of the “compassionate conservative”. The fact of the matter is that the current conservatives are “conservatives without conscience”, which happens to be the name of a book John Dean (former Nixon legal council) wrote. It’s a great book and if you read it, you will have a better understanding of the current conservative personality. It can be summed up with one word, “authority”.

Before the Republican Party was highjacked, it was very different than it is now. Consider the farewell address of the last true Republican president, WW II General Dwight D. Eisenhower. His words were prescient– if only they had been heeded.

I wonder how much of the difference is due to the difference in the phrasing. 4 years ago it was ‘paying attention’ now it’s ‘paying at least some attention’ also, was there actually any coverage yet at this point 4 years ago? There certainly hadn’t been elevently debates all ready like this year.

US to arm Israel and Arab states in $60bn deal

The US has announced military aid packages worth more than $60bn (£30bn) for Israel, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other key Arab allies in the Gulf. The aim is to boost regional defences against the growing power of Iran and to induce the Saudis in particular to cut back support for Sunni insurgent groups inside Iraq.

Last night, top Bush administration officials headed to the Middle East to discuss details of the arrangements. The most controversial element - in the US at least - is the supply of advanced weaponry to Saudi Arabia, including satellite-guided bombs, upgrades to fighter aircraft, as well as new navy ships, in a deal that could be worth $20bn.

In an attempt to reassure Israel, and head off opposition in Congress, Washington has promised the Jewish state a massive increase in military aid, to $30bn over the next decade, some 30 per cent more than over the past 10 years.

It’s a good thing we have an infinite amount of money to throw around, or this might look fiscally irresponsible.

Anyone who watches CBS and Katie Couric is NOT looking for news. She is empty headed and her bias is written all over her. CBS with Katie Couric is one small step from Fox Noise. Then there is ABC which is the non-cable version of Fox Noise. And then there is NBC which occasionally looks like a real news station, but not that often.

If we had real fair and balanced news in this country, George Bush would NOT be the worst President ever, because he never would have been President. And all this is happening because of Clinton signing the telecommunications bill that allowed almost free rein in media ownership.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that one. Unfortunately that’s where my darling daughter gets her news. She lives a very busy life and has little time to watch TV, so she watches Jon Stewart to get her daily dose of what is going on in the world with a little humor thrown in.

I think that number should scare the hell out of the Republicans. That age group voted in much larger numbers in the 2006 election and I expect and even larger number will vote in the 2008 election.

Since these young people are watching Bush piss their future down the drain (financially and environmentally), I’m fairly sure that most of them will be voting for a Democrat.

but the 36 percent 4 months into a very controversial war does.

It’s interest in the election, not the office itself. For the 2004 election, coverage didn’t ramp up until 2004 itself, or maybe late 2003, so there was no real interest in the election itself at this point back in ‘03

My 2 cents about the trolls: I have noticed that in the short run paying any attention to them results in them hanging around, but most of them tend to drift away over time if we regulars debate when we can and whack them when we cannot. I, for one, intend to stay on TP and enjoy the interactions, troll droppings and all, rather than abandon it to the trolls and let them declare victory.

Yes, there ARE limits. The Keith Ellison thread is a good example. TP should have intervened on that one. I think of myself as a tolerant person, and I will fight for the right of anyone to come here and post their opinion, whether it agrees with mine or not. But my tolerance only goes so far. That was just plain thread-trashing.

  96. RUCerious Says:

missmolly, thanks for you take. Seems like more and more TP is leaving the threads at the mercy of one or two namejacking/switching RNC operatives.
Not a good policy if TP wants to keep informed discourse at the forefront of their site.

  97. PatrioticLiberalChristian(PLC) Says:

    RUCerious and missmolly

I did not read the Ellison thread, but I trust your judgments on its content. And, of course, there are limits and times when TP monitors should take action. I “do nuance”. I also don’t mind a fellow progressive suggesting that we cut off responding to a particular troll at a particular time but I don’t particularly take a demand to that effect very well.

  98. katy Says:

National debt chart - here’s your Republican “fiscal responsibility”

    Comment by DM — July 31, 2007 @ 10:31 am

Here’s another chart, that goes back further:

    http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/history.gif

Please notice that the debt remained fairly constant until the mid-seventies, and began to rise a bit under Ford and Carter (probably due to the high inflation of that time).

Under 12 years of Reagan and Bush the elder (1981 to 1993), it skyrocketed. During the Clinton years (1993 - 2001), the rate of debt slowed, and even leveled off toward the end of Bill’s term. Then it took off again during Dubya’s watch, at a steeper rate than it ever has before. It’s fairly obvious which party is digging the hole.

“Tax and spend” versus “borrow and spend”. How much interest are we having to pay for the Repubs’ fiscal wizardry?

TP needs to make a correction.
Helen Thomas quit working for UPI when Messianic cult leader Sun Myung Moon bought UPI.
UPI has lost all of it’s credibility because of Moon’s ownership, much the same way the Wall Street Journal is going to when propagandist Rpuert Murdoch buys it. Murdoch is going to spend $5 billion for something that is immediatley going to be worth substantially less money as soon as he becomes associated with it.
And speaking of Murdoch, I’d bet my house that he is committing many crimes when it comes to where he gets the money to purchase all of his media holdings. I have a strong hunch he is cooking the books and is also involved in tax evasion. Perhaps someone should start looking into Murdoch’s funny money.

We had a discussion yesterday about ignoring the trolls, and it was said that same trolls post clever lies that need to be addressed, but the inane trolls should be ignored.

Alf (The Joker) is a f*cking inane troll! He doesn’t deliver anything that resembles any sort of fact anyone would take seriously, but there we are with the blah, blah, blah, giving that idiot the attention he craves — and here we are pandering to it.

    there is a story about
Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan) & Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Forest Hills)

Two New York congressmen criticized a prospective deal to sell state-of-the-art weapons to Saudi Arabia, accusing the oil-rich country of exporting terrorism and acting against American interests.
    […]
Weiner and Nadler said they will introduce legislation to block the deal, highlighting that 15 of the 19 hijackers on Sept. 11, 2001, were Saudi citizens.

I agree with the Congressmen, in that I believe the weapons sale is wrong.

However, I do not feel that the 9/11 attack is a valid justification. The Saudis, as a nation, and the 15 Saudi hijackers should not be painted with the same brush.

I think I would get some agreement that the disruptive children have been particularly vile over the last few days. I, and others, have asked TP to take corrective measures and, it seems, we are seeing some positive results.

We, the users, have some responsibility as well. We need to avoid responding to abuse and threats with abuse and threats. That, along with some stricter supervision from TP, should quickly restore TP to the fun, if contentious, forum we all enjoy.

    ThinkProgress, you missed this one:

Vice President Dick Cheney said he was wrong two years ago when he declared that the Iraq insurgency was in its “last throes.”
“It turned out to be incorrect,” Cheney said in an interview with CNN’s Larry King, the same interviewer to whom he made the statement in May 2005. “The insurgency turned out to be more robust.”

Cheney Says He Was Wrong About Iraq Insurgency in `Last Throes’

We finally get an acknowledgment (by someone in the White House) of a mistake and a recognition that things are not going so swimmingly in Iraq . Better late than never, I guess. Although he still stands by the president’s “surge”…
