Three former Bush aides to testify in Tillman inquiry.»

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Henry Waxman (D-CA), announced today that the White House will allow three former top aides tesify in an inquiry into the friendly-fire death of Army Ranger Pat Tillman in Afghanistan. Former White House Counselor Dan Bartlett, former Press Secretary Scott McClellan, and former speechwriter Michael Gerson will testify “without a transcript and with White House attorneys present.” If investigators determine that the aides have relevant information, they will be asked to return for transcribed interviews. “The White House has reserved the right to oppose that by claiming executive privilege.”

So the White House objective is to provide no relevant information–to lie if necessary (which won’t be transcribed) in order to avoid getting testimony recorded?

I think it’s the part about having to swear to GOD to tell the truth that members of this administration have an objection to. They have shown that they have no problem obfuscating (EP) or prevaricating (AGAG) when testifying to Congress, in press breifings (Tony Snow, Fox anchor) or taking with the American people (our Great Deciderer). Ask them to lie to GOD, and they start to doubt.

  16. dlet Says:

So in other words, if they ask the right questions the attorneys will stop the proceedings, Congress will call for a transcripted hearing and Bush will then claim executive privilege. Wonderful little system. Abuse of power doesn’t even come close to the term I would use. It makes me sick what this administration gets away with.

It was great to see our military leaders and Rumsfeld step up to the plate and admit fault in the Tillman death. Of course, none of them admitted that it was their own fault, but they did concede that mistakes were made. Sorry, very sorry, but someone else screwed up.

Wasn’t it the former head of the Joint Chiefs who said he knew early on that it was friendly fire but that it wasn’t really his responsibility to correct the information? “Ah, well, you know, dumb ol’ Army screwed it up. Not my problem.”

If Pat Tillman was not MURDERED, how do you explain three American bullets in his forehead? Which, according to the coroner, were fired from about ten yards away. Why was his uniform and personal belongings (including his diary) burned in the field before an investigation. Do not let the trolls change the subject - “friendly fire” does not adequately describe what happened here. If there is nothing to hide, why is the president cowering behind executive privelege?

  39. Keith G Says:

Not only was it three American bullets from a close range——-but the three in a small grouping on his forehead is not possible unless the second and third were fired after he went down. The body would have had a reaction to the first bullet in the forehead. How could all three bullets in the forehead be in a small grouping?

  40. Tom3 Says:

Tillman was probably murdered with an M-4 carbine - standard Ranger issue.

They’re LESS accurate than an M-16 rifle. So the murderer had to be VERY close to put a 3-shot burst in that tight a pattern.

Tillman was definitely murdered. Why is Chimpy covering up a murder?

  59. Peter C Says:

I’m willing to trust Waxman with this. He’s demanding transcripts and threatening subpoenas for more junior officials who may have executed the policy but would not have been in discussions that would approach an area of “executive priveledge”. He’s reserving the power to use more stringent means to compell testimony if the higher ranking officials are non-compliant. And, he’s got the signature of the head Republican on the committee, which deflects hollow criticism of partisanship.

The coverup of Tillman’s death was deplorable, but is relatively minor compared with the wholesale trashing of the Constitution that the administration is guilty of in other areas. The administration’s behavior in this investigation highlights their dishonesty and untrustworthiness, though. Waxman is right to persue it; it is moving the process forward.

    Why was he murdered?

    Comment by Charles from Shytown — August 2, 2007 @ 3:10 pm

Nobody knows why Tillman was murdered (and nobody is even admitting that he WAS murdered), but there are some facts surrounding the case that arouse plenty of suspicion that this isn’t just a case of “ooooops — thought you were the enemy, sorry!”.

Here’s what is known, or generally believed to be true:

    1) Tillman was a very high-profile soldier (as an NFL pro who gave up a lucrative football contract to fight for Uncle Sam), who was a PR bonanza for the White House.

    2) Tillman was critical of the war in Iraq and believed we shouldn’t be there. He had a meeting scheduled with Noam Chomsky when he went back to the states.

    3) Tillman was shot three times in the forehead with American bullets (all three wounds close together), at close range (not more than 10 yards).

    4) Tillman’s uniform, gear, and diary were burned before they could be examined by anyone.

    5) The White House is being uncooperative with providing information, to the point where executive privilege is being threatened. This usually means there’s something to hide.

    Connecting the dots:

Everybody (especially Tillman’s family) would like to know what the real story is. The most dramatic theory is that the White House ordered Tillman offed because they didn’t want their “star hero” going public against the war arm in arm with Chomsky when he got home. Because of Tillman’s high profile, he would have gotten a lot of press.

Another theory is that Tillman got fragged by his own men for any number of possible reasons. Maybe they didn’t like his politics, or maybe they didn’t like his personality. Fragging and other misconduct by military personnel often gets covered up to avoid bad publicity for the armed forces.

We may not ever find out what really happened, which is a tragedy for both the Tillman family and the American people.

  74. hellinabucket Says:

could you expound on that view point Bob Day? Why do you think that?

  75. Damian Says:

at yesterday’s hearing in the house. Reps Shays, Issle [sic] and McHenry, betrayed Pat Tillman and all other servicemen/women.

    Comment by Bob Day — August 2, 2007 @ 3:30 pm

Thanks for bringing that up. These three were revolting! Just vile POS. McHenry in his smug, self-righteous act, claiming the purpose of the hearing was to honor Pat’s heroism and by that, desparaging the few Dems who wanted to get to the truth. Same with Issa and Shays. These effers need a good old @ass-kicking!

  76. canardtahiti Says:

Can anyone confirm what I read yesterday, to the effect that Tillman’s autopsy established he was FIRST shot in the hand, hip and leg BEFORE the coup de grâce to his head? A link would be fine.

  77. Keith G Says:

    Why was he murdered?

Comment by Charles from Shytown —

Theory: Tillman was beginning to see that Bush’s war on terror wasn’t really about a war against terror. He had been reading Noam Chomsky and thought he had a lot of good insights. He was planning on a meeting with Chomsky. (Tillmann had a 3.84 GPA at Arizona State University. Finished degree in 3 1/2 years despite the many hours that football requires.) Tillman was becoming such a celebrity that his speaking out against the war would have received a great deal of media attention.

And who was the person who shot Mr Tillman? I don’t believe I have ever heard his/her name. 83. Keith G Says:

    Comment by Cynicon Implant

The New York Times and Wash Post printed all the administrations lies leading up to the invasion as if they were the truth. Progressives hated them for this. Do not assume that everyone at this website loves the Times and the Post.

  84. One Citizen Says:

It has been reported that the military chaplain lied during his debriefing on the matter.

The report of the soldier who was closest to Tillman when he was shot was substantially changed.

It has been reported that there were snipers on the scene firing at Tillman.

Three bullets in a tight pattern to Tillman’s forehead may well be nearly impossible to view as “accidental” especially considering the apparent coverup of the paper trail and the inability of multiple investigations to produce the person responsible for changing the on-the-ground reports.

I don’t think there’s any question that there must be a very powerful reason why Special Ops Leutenent General Kensinger purposely evaded Congress‘ subpeona.

Could it be because as Special Ops commander he knows why snipers were firing at Tillman?

But would they have MURDERED Tillman for potentially speaking against the war in Iraq?

They not only burned his diary, they burned his uniform and even destroyed his body armor before the incident could be investigated.

I believe it is very possible that the cold-blooded neocons at the top of the chain of command stealing $BILLIONS in war profiteering are very capable of ordering his execution.

I kept getting “nulled” over and over.

    Hellina,

Don’t hold back. Tell us how you really feel.

  106. Bob Day Says:

hellinbucket: easier said than done! I’m with you.

  107. Keith H. Says:

Executive privilege used as an excuse for not testifying is a clear admission of guilt and it should not be honored.

  108. hellinabucket Says:

I’ll hold back the aserbic opinions. I don’t think they could take it.

  109. Zimzone Says:

I never saw a ‘fragging in Nam, but sure heard a lot about them.

I don’t believe that was the case with Pat Tillman. I believe he was an independent thinker & totally disagreed with invading Iraq. His brother says so, his parents say so, & close friends say so.

I think he was snuffed on purpose. I don’t know if it was politics or uneasy Brass; it could have just as easily been his own company. If his leadership was as coarse as his verbal output, he may well have pissed off a scared sniveler to the breaking point.

But that still doesn’t account for such a close 3 round pattern…

  111. Justice Says:

these Bushie regime suppporters are cheats and liars themselves, otherwise WHY would you support a president ( no capitol for this one, he doesn’t deserve it)
who would claim EP over a HERO dying in Afganistan? WHY? In my view a President is someone who HONORS our soldiers, he should be the FIRST ONE to be saying “we will get to the truth let the chips fall where they may” and doing all he can to help find answers! Not this slimeball who has no morals.

People like Ringo just simply IGNORE the facts, not just in the Tillman case, but in EVERY case. He ignores the autopsy report completely, I am positive he didn’t even READ WHAT THE ARMY DOCTORS SAID. He ignores that the eye witness with him had his first hand account ALTERED, he ignores that his personal diary was TAKEN, he ignores his clothes being burned and he ignores completely that they botched the scene before investigators got there. Don’t tell me Rangers don’t know how to preserve a scene. He ignores that Bushie had held him up as a hero and used him as a propaganda tool from the day he enlisted! Just read Rummy’s letter! Clearly this is yet another CYA, I don’t recall. It’s sickening to see what low caliber people we have in this admin.
You fools just swallow lie after lie, you could care LESS about our soldiers OR the trauma all of this is causing his family. Bad enough to lose your beloved family member to this, but to then have to go through all this HELL and STILL not know what happened is beyond criminal. Talk about lack of ethics.
If his supporters would WAKE UP AND GET THE FACTS instead of believing their spoon feed rhetoric from Limpbaugh and all the other rightwing tools, this would not continue. You all are traitors, every single one of you.

  116. Jackie Says:

The doctors report shows that Pat Tillman was murdered. The only question was why? The Rangers had a job yet in comes sharpshooter why? Pat is the only one shot and it was two bulls eye shots to the head. All the evidence is destroyed why?

Thanks to his fellow soldiers we know why Pat Tillman’s death was premeditated murder. Pat was out spoken about the truth of what was happening in Afghan. Bush wanted to use Pat’s name in his campaign as Pat was due to come home. Pat was an outspoken John Kerry supporter. That could be a problem in a close election even if the fixed machines and voter denied the right to vote. So the White House inter circle came up with get rid of the problem. Yes the Military use Al Qaeda again and thought they could get rid of the problem. It would have worked. Yes God has a way of letting the truth come out. Now Rummy and the Generals lied under oath to save themselves. All this was done to control the United States Government and steal from the US Treasury. What’s really sad is Congressmen Chris Shays even apologized to Rummy and the Generals because he thought it was a waste of time for them to answer questions about Pat Tillman’s murder. Congressmen Shays had nothing to say for the murder and lies told to the Tillman Family. He thought that was a waste of time too. Now I wonder what Congressmen Shays would have to save if his son was murdered by the White House/Rummy? Would he still be willing to let it go if his son/daughter was ordered to be murdered by the Bush Administration.

  117. nanlichi Says:

Ok TP, once more, without the gutshot comment:

You sycophantic whore trolls should be ashamed of themselves for supporting your Dear Leader’s coverup of Tillman’s murder. We can disagree about the extent to which Bush lied to get His War, we can disagree about politics, but for you to defend Bush’s call for Executive Privilege to stonewall and investigation into the cover up of a soldier’s murder is beyond reason.

You are so much in love with Bush that you are willing to prostitute yourselves.

  122. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Ringo, I’m not sure why you think it’s impossible to have three closely-grouped American bullet holes in your head fired from less than 10 yards away, but here’s the ABC News story on the supressed medical examiner information: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=3419299

How about you simply check that out before you dismiss anyone as a “moonbat.”

  123. Powkat Says:

This became a ‘conspiracy site’ when it became clear to thinking people that BushCo is not planning on leaving quietly when their time is up. They have committed too many crimes to let that happen. Why won’t they let Rep. Peter DeFazio view the order regarding response to a national emergency? Why do they cover everything with executive privilege? Why can’t Cheney recall whether or not he sent Gonzales to Ashcroft’s hospital room? How awful does a wire-tapping scheme have to be that Mueller and Ashcroft think it goes too far?

    Any more questions?

  124. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Powkat: “Why won’t they let Rep. Peter DeFazio view the order regarding response to a national emergency?”

I hope the answer is that they are so incompetent that they really have no real plan and it would be embarassing to show that to a Democrat. The alternative answers are much harder to consider.

Who are “they” and why aren’t “they” being questioned in these hearings oh clairvoyant conspiracy theorist?

…Read my post again, ZL. But this time try stopping every now and then to breathe. Read it a third time if you have to, this time aloud.

Here it is captioned - Lo and behold the answer to your question was there all along!

I don’t think there’s any question that there’s a very powerful reason why Special Ops Leutenent General Kensinger purposely evaded Congress‘ subpeona.

    …and AGAIN

Could it be because as Special Ops commander he knows why snipers were firing at Tillman?

Zed, you slung the cutesy name “clairvoyant conspiracy theorist” but the fact is that Special Ops Leutenent General Kensinger purposely evaded Congress‘ subpeona and the one dude (Sgt. Bryan O’Neal) who was at Tillman’s side when he was shot doesn’t recall Tillman speaking to that mysterious army chaplain before he died.

Call me a crazy conspiracy theorist if you will, but I think its safe to surmise that the 3 rounds that went through Ranger Tillman’s forehead in a 2″ pattern from close proximity is more than likely to have prevented Tillman from calling O’Neil a sniveling coward to his “chaplain” just before he died.

You don’t have to say when you’re being sarcastic.

  128. sponson Says:

Nowhere at all in the article does it say these “witnesses” will be under oath, so it’s not “testimony.” This is not a minor detail, TP folks, please change your headline, it’s inaccurate.

  129. CT_Version 2 Says:

Wayne, absolutely not. I felt that I disrespect your service, as your military record makes you a trustee of our nation. That apology was to make clear to you that I wasn’t an unappreciative citizen. I apologize if that statement confused you. I’m simply not the TP die-hard progressive, that’s all, but your views are highly intelligent, regardless. Politics are separate.

  130. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Exactly. Clear forensic data contradicts testimony. We need to demand an investigation.

  131. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

I can’t help but think all this drama about executive privilege and cover-ups is meant to take our eye off the real outrage here - that Pat Tillman was murdered. On television, they’re still calling it “friendly fire” as if it is a fact.

  132. J Lewd Says:

Is it truly testimony if all you do is deflect questions by saying “I don’t recall”? Why not call it by its real name: “Three former Bush aides to obfuscate in Tillman inquiry”?

  133. theswan Says:

I DID see the aftermath of a fragging while in ‘Nam and it wasn’t pretty. I only knew the “Fraggee” slightly and he was a first class prick, but still didn’t deserve that! And this was done by people that didn’t trust or respect him, not like we may have with the Tillman incident.

I would surmise that IF this was a deliberate act, it might be more of an ordered act, not one out of personal feelings; and if so, that would scare me more than anything else!

And the cover-up is also disgusting, chickenhawk behavior as well.

You, I and every veteran of the US military should be ashamed of this POS who calls himself the “commander Guy”. He makes Nixon look like George Washington!

    I am more

  135. WaltTheMan Says:

I seem to find from various sources that the projectiles used in the Ranger version of the M4 Assault Rifle are armor piercing. Given that, any transfer of momentum would be minimal and a Kevlar helmet would have been transparent. The three shot burst time is about 1/7th of a second. Using mass ratios and an assumption of 20% inertial transfer, a victims head would move but 1/10th of a cm from first impact to last at 5 cm. At 3 meters, the spread rises to 1 cm and at 10 meters to 3 cm because of the effects of recoil.

  145. bilbobaggins Says:

    Comment by r”

Yes. When someone is shot three times in the head from 10 yards away, that pretty much constitutes murder. The coroner investigating his death asked for an inquest because he suspected “foul play” (that would be murder)”.

If the killing of Pat Tillman was just an accident then why:

    1) Did they burn his uniform and diary at the scene
    2) Did they never figure out who pulled the trigger (considering the state of forensics today, that would have been a very easy thing to do)
    3) Did they lie about how he was killed.
    4) Why did the person standing next to Tillman when he died change his story after his initial interview.
    5) Why are they refusing to release his records to Congress.

Oswald was set up to be the patsy. Pentagon, CIA, Mafia, FBI, Hunt brothers, and Dallas Police all wanted him dead. Jack Ruby’s only jobs his entire life were with the mafia. A thousand Dallas police knew this. It is not in the Warren Commission Report.

Nixon was in Dallas early that day. GHWBush says he does not remember where he was.

    J. Edgar Hoover sent a memo to George Bush of CIA to give a report on international reaction.

Woody Harrelson believes his father (a political hitman) was one of the “tramps” shooter.

Senator Arlen Specter was author of the “magic bullet theory”.

Check this soldier out. I guess they (Bush) did not get to him yet.
    Another Hero.

“Scott Thomas Beauchamp, the New Republic’s “Baghdad Diarist,” is sticking to his stories. Well, most of them, anyway; he’s sticking to the ones that haven’t been definitively proved false.” from Powerline blog

  154. One Citizen Says:

Mr. “Locked in the Bone” pronounces “Lots of speculation here. - it wuz a accidint - nuthin to see here, ain’t there a NASCAR wreck or sumpin. on FoxRuse?”…

Whether or not Army Specialist Pat Tillman was murdered, there was a coverup. DESPITE Rummy’s assertion to the contrary.

SOMEONE ordered Spc. Bryan O’Neal not to tell truth about Tillman’s death. Personally I think it was Special Ops Lieutenant General Philip Kensinger who purposely evaded a congressional subpeona to testify after he got a slap on the wrist for blowing one of six (count ‘em’ 6!) “investigations”.

The warmonger and mercenary blogsites are all lining up to call anyone wondering what really happened tinfoil hat wearers to cover up the coverup of the cover up.

But if Spc. Bryan O’Neal was ordered not to tell truth, and if

“Thomas F. Gimble, the Defense Department’s acting inspector general, said that investigators could not determine who altered O’Neal’s statement and that no attempt was made to examine the document’s electronic history”

    ,

Whether murder or fratricide, Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and all that other top former Pentagon brass flat out LIED when denying any coverup at Waxman’s hearing, didn’t they?

But just how bad is lying about that type of cover up?

In the words of now censured former U.S. Army Special Operations Commander Lieutenant General Philip R. Kensinger Jr. (who evaded Senator Waxman’s subpeona to testify about how Pat Tillman died, why there were snipers firing at him, and the ensuing cover up:

“Our families are an integral part of our foundation. Our family readiness groups are out there making sure than our soldiers are able to do their jobs and not have to worry about things at home and knowing that their families are being taken care of.

Our soldiers, civilians and families members—that’s the strength of Army Special Operations.”
