Washington Post Hires ‘Party Of Death’ Author To Lead ‘Discussion Group’ On Morality»

partyofdeath11.jpg

In 2006, National Review columnist Ramesh Ponnuru appeared on Fox News and claimed that the “journalistic elite was a functional ally of the party of death.”

This week, Ponnuru officially joins the “party of death” himself, signing on with the “journalistic elites” at the Washington Post.

At the Post, he will lead a new Discussion Group on “the future of conservatism” entitled Right Matters. One of the issues Ponnuru will focus on is “the state’s role in enforcing morality.” Ponnuru’s focus on “morality” in his new job is not surprising, as he has developed a name for himself by espousing radical, incendiary views on social issues, particularly abortion.

Here are the types of arguments that the Washington Post now chooses to endorse on its website:

- “A coalition of special interests ranging from Planned Parenthood to Hollywood” now owns the Democratic party and “liberals use animal rights to displace human rights.” [LINK]

- Having an abortion is worse than killing a kitten. [LINK]

- “[H]uman beings in the embryonic, fetal, and infant stages of development” can “perform mental functions.” [LINK]

With the addition of Ponnuru, the Washington Post is bolstering its deep bench of conservative pundits. In addition to its often hawkish editorial board, right-wing columnists Charles Krauthammer, George Will, and Robert Novak fill the op-ed pages of the Post.

UPDATE: Michael Gerson, President Bush’s former chief speechwriter and the so-called “conscience of the White House,” is also a columnist for the Post.

House Approves Taxes on Oil Companies

WASHINGTON - Declaring a new direction in energy policy, the House on Saturday approved $16 billion in taxes on oil companies, while providing billions of dollars in tax breaks and incentives for renewable energy and conservation efforts.

Republican opponents said the legislation ignored the need to produce more domestic oil, natural gas and coal. One GOP lawmaker bemoaned “the pure venom … against the oil and gas industry.”

The House passed the tax provisions by a vote of 221-189. Earlier it had approved, 241-172, a companion energy package aimed at boosting energy efficiency and expanding use of biofuels, wind power and other renewable energy sources….

House Repeals Oil Tax Breaks; Passes Clean Energy Incentives

The US House of Representatives has repealed $16 billion in oil company tax breaks, while providing billions of dollars in incentives for renewable energy and conservation.

Republican opponents said the legislation ignored the need to produce more domestic oil, natural gas and coal. One GOP lawmaker bemoaned “the pure venom … against the oil and gas industry.”

The House passed the tax provisions 221-189. Earlier it approved, 241-172, a companion energy package aimed at boosting energy efficiency and expanding use of biofuels, wind power and other renewable energy sources.

The two bills passed at an unusual Saturday session as lawmakers prepared to leave town for their month-long summer recess. They will be merged with legislation the Senate passed in June.

On one of the most contentious issues, the House voted to require investor-owned electric utilities nationwide to generate at least 15 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources.

The bill also calls for more stringent energy-efficiency standards for appliances and lighting and incentives for building more energy-efficient “green” buildings. It would authorize special bonds for cities and counties to reduce energy demand.

But the Democrats avoided a nasty fight by ignoring — for now — calls for automakers to make vehicles more fuel-efficient.

But that fight should not be put off any longer.

  20. Clyde the Ripper Says:

Some political/religious elements in this Country have for over 200 years refused to recognize that it is not a function of the Government to legislate morality. Not only is it precluded in our Constitution as a tacit function of the State/Church separation it is humanly impossible. Morality is generally a religious and social concept rather than a legal function. Moses, with his Ten Commandments, made the first attempt at legislating (dictating) morality. While politically correct and an admirable effort the effect was no different than it is today: they are ignored as not applicable to the “Believers” and used as a club to judge the acts of the non-believers. However, the fact that your and my personal life is no business of the freaking Icantrecallicans doesn’t stop them from trying time after time.

  161. Marcus Aurelius Says:

Tom - oh yes, the war for oil canard. I wish we invaded Iraq for oil so all the selfish, earth-hating SUV drivers would stop b*tchin about gas prices. AND you are probably such a hypocrite, you complain about gas prices and the environment in one sentence.

Two older cousins brought it to the attention of the rest of the family that I do not wear bras. They proceeded to discuss this fact in front of the entire family, even going so far as to suggest that someone needed to set me straight.

  162. I Heart Alito Says:

#160 - so what did you do that sent you to hell then? I mean, I have no problem with the war, tax cuts or a right-wing majority on the Supreme Court. Maybe God is punishing you for being such a hateful prick.

  166. I Heart Alito Says:

Samuel Alito is not a lying fraud. He just doesn’t represent the radical left-wing interest groups who heart vicious murderers, terrorists and babykillers.
