Tancredo’s Plan To Bomb Mecca Lambasted By Conservatives»

meccaLast week, Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) reiterated his call for bombing Muslim holy sites as a “deterrent” against terrorist strikes on the U.S. homeland. “If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina,” he said in Iowa.

“This shows that we mean business,” said Bay Buchanan, a senior Tancredo adviser. “There’s no more effective deterrent than that.”

Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg responded, “That’s nuts, of course, not only contrary to every cherished American ideal, but counterproductive, as the prospect of the United States bombing Islamic holy cities would inspire, rather than deter, terrorists.” Fortunately, many leading conservatives have distanced themselves from Tancredo’s dangerous logic:

Former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson: “I sincerely believe that bombing religious artifacts and religious holy sites would do nothing but unify one billion Muslims against us. It makes no sense.”

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee: “Historically, we’ve tried to avoid doing what the Nazis did, and that’s bombing every kind of possible target. We’ve had this attitude (that) we don’t do these things. There are some things that are off limits.”

Rep. Duncan Hunter:I wouldn’t follow that.”

State Department Spokesman Tom Casey: Tancredo’s comments are “reprehensible” and “absolutely crazy.”

State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack: “The remarks are simply outrageous. … [I]t’s important for people abroad, who may not necessarily pay attention to the details and just hear a headline with that in it, that the official position of the United States Government is that those remarks are just outrageous.”

Tancredo’s comments have created international concern. Pakistani National Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Amir Hussain said the assembly will “unanimously adopt a resolution against this mischievous statement.”

For his part, Tancredo is refusing to back down. At last weekend’s debate, he responded, “Boy, when [the State Department] starts complaining about things I say, ‘I feel a lot better about the things I say,’ I’ll tell you right now.”

You can email Tancredo’s official blogger by clicking here. Let him know you want to see Tancredo retract his remarks.

UPDATE: The New York Times blog labels Tancredo’s ludicrous bombing plan a “tough stance.”

Good idea, Tancredo!!! There is nothing like bombing Mecca (throw in Medina…sh!t, why not Bethlehem…).

Sorry for the bad news, Mr. P.

  4. JPark Says:

If I didn’t know better I would think Tancredo was one of our VERY intelligent trolls. What a fool.

  5. midwestblue Says:

    Yeah, well, he’s nuts.

The “Protect America Act.” Lordy, what a name. Couple it with “The Patriot Act,” and Americans have lost practically all of their freedoms. I want a “Protect America From Bush Act.” That act would also be known as impeachment.

  6. upside00 Says:

Crazy Tommy sure knows how to get everyone’s attention! And he may be the smartest and most honest of the Repug candidates.

  7. JPark Says:

upside, I hope you are not talking about Tommy Thompson. I, as a Wisconsinite know he is dumb as a box of hammers.

  8. JPark Says:

How about the protect America from the UAE act? That wouldn’t work since it is not good for business.

  9. upside00 Says:

Maybe the most honest. He is ok with his KKK tendencies. Not going to get many votes. Ron Paul is the SAME guy but some libs will STILL vote for him.

  11. Dave Says:

He is helping the terrorist by giving them a reason to be pissed off at America. This only increases their recruiting opportunities.

I am sure by now it is in all the terrorist media with a 1-800-kill-Americans-now number to join up.

What a bone head, the lengths these guys will go to pander to the “base”

  12. JPark Says:

upside, I totally understand. We have our own retard (Tommy Thompson). I feel for you.

  15. Peter C Says:

I’m not sure that counts as “lambasting”. Tancredo needs to be b!tch-slapped, and then handed a resignation letter to sign.

Unfortuneately, there are way too many others who need exactly the same treatment.

Immigration2008DotCom: “Tancredo only suggested that as a response if several U.S. cities are nuked.”

Even so, it is still a horrible and apocalyptic idea. How about we not make threats to nuke their cities? Such threats will most likely only encourage radicals with martyrdom fetishes to “crush” the “Crusaders” before the Crusaders have a chance to crush them. Tancredo’s suggestion shows he has a near utter lack of knowledge as to how the Middle East works right now, specifically with regard to radicals. Such men don’t belong in government.

You do realize how incredibly stupid this is, don’t you? Just in case you truly have the intelligence of linoleum, I’ll explain.

Let’s see — if you want to “nuke” a billion or so very angry Muslims because they are out for blood after you destroyed their holy sites (or maybe you just want to “nuke” them all because you’re a bigot), you would have to nuke a large part of the world. Over half of Africa, all of the Middle East (even Israel — Muslims live there, too), much of Asia, and Indonesia would have to be leveled to get them all.

Do you really think the rest of the world is going to sit back quietly while this is going on? We would be viewed as a rabid dog that has to be destroyed. What’s left of the world would be unified against us to the point where we would cease to exist (we aren’t the only ones with nukes, you know).

Let’s recap — it’s total lunacy to bomb sites that are of great religious importance to a fifth of the world’s population. And there are no words to describe the absurdity of practicing nuclear genocide on them.

As opposed to ridiculous, dangerous, foolish, preposterous, risible, ludicrous, obscene, unconscionable, immoral, or flat-out insane.

Well, that damned liberal media sure know how to smack down these moonstruck mass-murdering fascists, don’t they?

  103. Probus Says:

Tancredo’s remarks are out of the mainstream. He embarrassed himself by making such “crazy” statements. Even the State Department chastised him for his remarks. What can one expect if he’s taking advise from someone like Bay Buchanan. Her views are often racist and out of touch with reality just like her brother, Pat.

  104. david Says:

Well, well. Apparently talking with Chavez, Castro and Kim Jong Il is naive and irresponsible, but bombing the holiest site of one of the world’s major religions is taking a tough stance.

Good grief! To think what a few racist cartoons in a minor Danish newspaper sparked. This would be a 1000 times worst than Bush’s “Bring it on” comment.

Of course, I’m coming to the conclusion that America is the rogue state. I was talking to someone who was in the states after 9/11 and there was a story in the news about a redneck who gunned down a Sikh because they thought he was a Muslim.

What was really shocking was that the apparently normal people she was visiting didn’t think it was so strange to murder an innocent person in response to 9/11, just that the killer should have done his research before he went on his vigilante rampage.

“Why do they hate us?” Americans ask. I’d say, “What’s not to hate?”

  106. Chocolate Jesus Loves to be Frank in his mouth Says:

“Tancredo only suggested that as a response if several U.S. cities are nuked.”

what if its not even muslims that did it? if it was christian apolocalypic militiamen, should we nuke rome?

  107. Iohannes Scottus Eriugena Says:

Man, that dude need to cheer up!!!

  108. paul Says:

This is a good post. Does anyone here question why TP on one hand makes Tancredo look like an idiot, but on the other, paints many in the Republican party as reasonable for their open disagreement with Tancredo?

Maybe the people at ThinkProgress understand that the ‘Republicans as Nazis’ sentiment that is prevalent here turns away the more moderate and reasonable visitors here, jeopardizing the credibility and viability of the site. Good work, TP.

  109. Spence Says:

I love Think Progress, I read it everyday. I just don’t like seeing little updates like the one for the New York Times where it would lead you to believe that the NYT approves of Tancredo’s remarks. From my perspective, it seems like the NYT believes Tancredo is just posturing himself as the toughest guy in the room. Republicans have to show who’s got the biggest etc around, whether there’s a brain behind it or not. Sure he’s tough, but insane.

  110. HeartlandLiberal Says:

Someone who is rational please explain to me how Tancredo is in any shape, form or fashion NOT a TERRORIST equivalent to a member of Al Qaeda planning to bomb an American population center.

That’s what I thought. There IS NO DIFFERENCE.

He should be arrested for threatening terrorist acts.

  111. Tobey Tall Says:

    103 / brilliantly spotted

There was a Muslim protest in Londo where a Muslim guy had a banner that said Bomb America ……..he was jailed for 6 years

Tancredo should be charged and jailed, nobody realises just how bad he makes America look

  113. bernarda Says:

Youse Guys are too hard on Tancredo. His policy should be extended to other religions. For example, we should bomb the Vatican and Lourdes and other Catholic holy sites unless the Church renounces its opposition to birth control and abortion, policies which are effectively more damaging and destructive than international terrorism.

The Catholic Church has been a terrorist organization for 1700 years already.

  115. SGT Higgins Says:

You can email Tancredo’s official blogger by clicking here. Let him know you want to see Tancredo retract his remarks.

Retract his remarks? Who cares if he retracts his remarks? His non-apology won’t make a damn bit of difference to HIM! Vote him out. Start counting down your days as a US Rep. Tancredo.
His apology wouldn’t be heartfelt or sincere, it would be an act. No thanks. Just make sure the hateful little beast never represents the state of Colorado again.

  116. mroom Says:

It’s interesting, in reading the responses provided, that the people running for President use soft language whereas the State Dept employees call it for what it is “crazy”, and “outrageous.” I prefer the State Dept responses in this case.

  117. lonesomerobot Says:

you trolls just don’t get it.

the name of this game is “someone has to decide where the madness ends”. even if terrorists nuke a u.s. city, nuking mecca or medina is a horrible idea.

if i have a crazy brother and he kills your sister, do you respond by coming to my house and burning it down? well, only if you’re an inbred hilljack or basically crazy yourself. essentially tancredo is saying he’s either an inbred hilljack or certifiably insane.

notithstanding the fact that mecca is in saudi arabia and responding by nuking a city there would, in effect, be signing our economy’s death warrant. without oil, we don’t have the means to fight anyone, produce food, or distribute goods. our economy would shut down and the result would be even more chaos in america.

so anybody that thinks this idea by tancredo actually has any merit is a grade a, 100% verified idiot.

  118. paul Says:

We can all agree that Tancredo’s comments are insane.

What’s amazing to me is this:

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said yesterday that his recent comments that Israel should be “wiped off the map” represent Iran’s long-standing policy on the Jewish state and don’t mark a change in position.

We all decry (rightly so) that Tancredo’s comments are insane. But why are we so hesitant to acknowledge the seriousness and threatening nature of the comments coming from the leadership in much of the middle east. When was the last TP post shedding some light on Islamic intolerance? We’re pretty good at beating up on conservative republicans. Is it prudent to fixate on the splinter in our eye, while we ignore the plank in the eye of our Islamic brothers?

  119. hellinabucket Says:

I agree with the SGT. I don’t want to hear a retraction. I want to see him out of our govt.

Only the one’s pushing for a holy war would think this is acceptable.

  120. hellinabucket Says:

paul, as crazy as the Iranian President is (and he is a loon) this would be more of Israel’s issue and let Israel directly respond instead of us being the world’s Police.

That was the republican stance. Or have the republicans flip flopped on this as well as small govt, fiscal responsibility and family values?

  121. underdog Says:

if the NYT thinks this is a tough stance, then they are clearly drinking the same kool-aid as Tommy boy.

  122. lonesomerobot Says:

well, paul, ahmadinejad’s insanity aside, considering there isn’t a persian phrase that equates to “wiped off the map” (it’s a western phrase and a western interpretation of what he said), it’s kind of silly for you to rely on one narrow misinterpretation of a statement of by a man who doesn’t even have the power to order the iranian army to make one threatening move.

compare that to bush saying “bring ‘em on” or calling the war on terror a “crusade”. compare that to our 4 carrier groups in the straits of hormuz.

i wonder if you would feel threatened, paul, if iran had four carrier groups off the coast of florida right now. i wonder if you would feel threatened, paul, if iran had more than 20 military bases in mexico, canada and the carribean. perhaps then you might understand the posture that iran is taking.

    but probably not.

  123. Luis M Says:

Quick FYI: I know Wikipedia isn’t quite the best compendium of knowledge being edited by tons of people all of the time, but here’s a quick
Wikipedia entry regarding Iran’s President comments.

Putting the Israel-Palestine situation aside for a moment, and keeping in mind that a lot of Islamic governments are (in my opinion) highly suppressive of human rights, it’s not fair to condemn so harshly someone for a mis-translation of a speech. The guy’s got many things to be criticized for; don’t get carried away on a figure of speech.

    Heh. What a coinci-dink.

  125. paul Says:

I sure I’m not the only one, but I think we must be under new management. Many of my posts either don’t make it or get posted briefly, then disappear. Hopefully, it’s a mechanical problem.

  126. mikey Says:

Why would I want Tancredo to retract? The more the Republicans are willing to state their beliefs in public in plain language, the more the American people and World can understand how radical and destructive those beliefs are.

Why did bush/cheney lie about the reasons for occupying Iraq? Because they knew honesty would allow people to understand their real, venal agenda.

More honesty and transparency from the party of hatred, intolerance, racism and endless war. Let’s get the debate focused on real positions instead of smokescreens.

    mikey

  127. Campbell Says:

The conservative angle is a little bit of a stretch. The bombing scenario is already on the books in Washington as an option among many, its just worded a little differently. But as usual the media will use this issue against Tancredo to deter from his illegal immigration stance. But guess what, Iowa is not listening to the squawk and rant of the liberal media.

  128. paul Says:

The guy’s got many things to be criticized for; don’t get carried away on a figure of speech.

Bin Laden declared war on the west in 1998. For the most part al Qaeda telegraphs its intentions. If we take them at their word, are we ‘getting carried away with a figure of speech’. Please. Get carried away.

  129. AmericanArab Says:

Forget about e-mailing his blogger. Hopefully his constituents will vote him out of office. He’s been in Congress since 1998.

    kickthemallout.com

  130. lonesomerobot Says:

paul, clearly you don’t understand the difference between al qaeda and iran.
bin laden is the leader of al qaeda, and is a rogue at that. if he threatens, declares war, or takes action, he answers to no one.

ahmadinejad can’t make any decision for iran without it being approved by both the supreme leader (ali khameini) and the ‘assembly of experts’ (a panel of clerics). he is subject to their judgement in all major decisions. also take into consideration that ahmadinejad’s popularity has continually fallen among the iranian people (because of fuel rationing, believe it or not). so we’re likely to see a different president of iran in 2009.

still, we have iran in a much more precarious position (surrounded by more than 20 military bases and 4 carrier groups in the straits of hormuz) than we have al qaeda. considering we are “supposed” to be going after bin laden and al qaeda, you’d think that after six years we’d have seen more progress.

of course i don’t think al qaeda were the objective of our afghani and iraqi adventures at all. clearly we’ve always been after iran. since 1979, in fact.

  131. paul Says:

I hope you’re right. with that logic though, couldn’t you dismiss the threat of GWB to the rest of the world?

  132. Probus Says:

Instead of having Tancredo retract his statements I would instead urge him to continue to say ridiculous and “crazy” things. The more he speaks the sooner his candidacy will collapse.

I believe it’s an ideological struggle that goes back along time. It’s like two bucks, ramming their heads together in the forest over a doe. Eventually we will learn to just share the doe, but we’re not just going to step aside submissively while you have her all to yourself. You’re not willing to do that either.

  137. Sam Says:

Threatening to Nuke the Holy Cities of Islam? Now that is real terrorism, OR WHAT? I wonder how many more enemies for the US such irresponsible comments have created. And some persons actually belive this kind of a person is world leadership material?

More ‘Loony Tunes’ trying to run for the office of US President. Does ‘God’ speak personally to his ‘loco guy’ or is he just as daft as the “Donkeys Backside” thats already in the White House. God forbid that these people show so much ignorance about other cultures and Faiths.

There was one great British WW2 Leader, Winston Churchill who stated that it is better to… “Jaw, Jaw, than War War!” The onlyw ay America can claime the ‘Moral High Ground’ is to do what is right. Bombing the ‘cr@p’ out of Middle Eastern countries is NO way to win ‘Hearts and Minds’, which Mr Bush and co keep telling us all.

Yes… “God Bless America”, and Britian and the other Coalition Forces…. But lets have Wiser Heads in office, instead of the people that are there at this time!

  144. millennium1000 Says:

Radical extremist muslim islamic terrorist exceed global welcome. Moderates will moderate with extreme measures if radical extreme terrorism continues unchecked. To infest earthly religious cites with wordly replies should be expected until moderation regains control. The thousand years reign will not be complete until evil is unleashed for a season to counteract zealot fakes. Choose wisely or loose wishfully. Millennium1000 is small compared to infinity.
