In a visit to the collapsed bridge in Minneapolis yesterday, President Bush vowed to aid in reconstruction efforts. But the AP reports that “[n]early two years ago, with parts of New Orleans still under water after Hurricane Katrina, Bush made similar declarations in the French Quarter, promising that the government would ’stay as long as it takes to help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives.’” New Orleans City Councilwoman Shelley Midura remarked: “I’m sorry, it takes more than a simple sentence.”

only 532 more days of his lies and incompetence
August 6th, 2007 at 6:47 pmOf course he might repeat the promises promises course again….but then …somehow this is a smaller amount of money to spare from Haliburton, Boeing etc .
August 6th, 2007 at 6:49 pmI guess I wasn’t the only one who instantly recalled the promises made by Bu**sh** two years ago and noted how similar were the promises delivered in Minneapolis.
To the President, this probably looks like another opportunity to demonstrate the bedrock Republican principle — government doesn’t work.
I wonder if they realize that most of us are starting to catch on to the fact that it’s mainly Republican government that doesn’t work.
August 6th, 2007 at 6:52 pmIsn’t the Repug convention being held in MSP? If so, you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll have it upright and shining (probably with Bone-her and Rove grinning from ear to ear) for the photo op showing what great work the GOP did in rebuilding the city. Perhaps they should have held the convention in New Orleans.
August 6th, 2007 at 6:56 pmHe has no choice but to clean up this mess–the Republcan National Convention is being held there next year.
August 6th, 2007 at 6:56 pmAt least this disaster is on a much smaller scale then New Orleans. They can clean it up much easier then an entire city.
August 6th, 2007 at 7:02 pm“I stand by this man. I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things. August 6th, 2007 at 7:02 pmWe in Minnesota have no use for GDumbya. Our state officials and residents will drive the train on this one. We all just had to hold our collective noses when Pickles and GDumbya cruised into town for their photo ops.
We’ll rub Little Timmy Pawlenty’s nose in his “no new tax” BS; we’ll use Little Normie Coleman’s waning influence in Washington. Then, the next chance we get, we’ll vote their pathetic little asses out of office, too.
These two opportunists have been more interested in building a baseball stadium for a billionaire owner and covering for a presi-dunce and his dirty little war in Iraq. We’ll ride them both hard and put them away wet.

August 6th, 2007 at 7:04 pmAt least this time, Bush wasn’t on vacation.
August 6th, 2007 at 7:04 pmI think he will rebuild the bridge for one reason only, Minneapolis is hosting the 2008 Republican Convention. He’ll still ignore New Orleans, though…

August 6th, 2007 at 7:09 pmNo these people are white shristians.
August 6th, 2007 at 7:13 pmWill Bush repeat Katrina failures in Minneapolis?
Well, it depends. Is it basically an African-America community and/or vote primarily Democratic?
If the answer to either is yes, then sure -Katrina will be repeated.
(I wouldn’t necessarily call it a failure, though. My suspicion is that the neglect of New Orleans was premeditated)

Failures? It seems to me that Bush has accomlished everything he wanted to accomplish in NOLA:
August 6th, 2007 at 7:25 pm- Blackwater mercs to keep the French Quarter and Mardi Gras safe.
- No bid contracts to Halliburton (and others) for cost-plus reconstruction.
- Trailers contaminated with formaldehyde for lower income residents.
- Regentrification of NOLA to represent a more well-to-do, white, male constituency.
- A photo-op in Jefferson Square with his shirt sleeves rolled up, because he does “hard work.”
Minneapolis-St. Paul doesn’t have all of those pesky, low-income, minority, Democratic voters, so there’s no reason to “accomplish” so much. Just repair the bridge and have your “big-tent, party of inclusiveness” convention, which he will not be invited to attend.
“Heckuva job, Bushie, heckuva job.”
“I’m sorry, it takes more than a simple sentence.â€
That’s right, it does. It takes time and hard work, so chill.
August 6th, 2007 at 7:26 pmof course he will. That’s what happens when you turn over such important jobs to politicians. what makes anyone think that some politician that was elected (or not) has any skill, or interest, in dealing with these things.
leave it to the communities and let the rest of us donate directly to them to help out…it’s worked in the past and it can work again.

It is one thing to trip up an opponent, and another to succeed yourself. If it weren’t for the pressing issues coming from security and economic pressures around the world, the Dems would never be forced to do anything. As it is, they barely do the right thing in time - fund troops, allow wiretapping of foreign targets, etc.

The new stadium is committed. In an ironic twist of fate, the Twins organization rescheduled the ground-breaking ceremony that had been planned for the day after the bridge collapsed.
Here’s another piece of irony for you — the crook who owns the Twins supposedly couldn’t pay for the entire thing himself. But somehow he has found the money to quietly go around and buy up the land adjoining the new stadium site. Ain’t free enterprise great?
August 6th, 2007 at 7:49 pmYeah, cuz Dems leadership is soooooooo much better, which is why the Congress’s approval rating isn’t even 1/2 of the approval rating of President Bush.

Oh, gawd, another poor, misinformed right-winger repeating discredited talking points…
Here’s a list of Congressional approval poll results over the last few months.
Here’s a similar list of poll results for President Bush.
The RCL average for Congress is 28.8%. The most recent results for the President are 30%, 29% and 31%.
Pretty damn close, and hardly 1/2 of the approval rating of Bush. So either cite the poll results of which you speak (and they’d better be comparing apples to apples) or STFU.
August 6th, 2007 at 7:53 pmBeing a Minneapolis resident I can state with certainty that our governor, T Paw, won’t want the ‘08 convention going down with protests about the bridge going on outside the arena. Obviously there will be protests (I know I’ll be there) but the general populous tends to ignore these unless the issue has a Minnesota angle in which case the local media will be all over it. Remember, we’ve elected a professional wrestler and it looks like Al Franken is next. Republicans only get by in the state by opposing spending and tax increases and they won’t be able to play hardball on this one.

I have no disagreement with the points you make except for one. I do not believe it is Bush that so expertly gained the power to do all those things. I believe it was Cheney, using Bush to attain that stature. Bush really is just a puppet, a convenient whipping boy for anything that goes wrong. Who does everyone blame for the debacle in Iraq? Cheney or Bush? We all know that Cheney and his PNAC friends/fellow adminsitration officials wanted this Iraq invasion from before the beginning. Even before Dick Cheney was asked to pick Bush’s 2000 Running Mate (he chose himself, of course), and well before Dick Cheney put together the transition team that selected the incoming cabinet (he chose many PNAC members, of course). And did you know that Cheney’s Secret Service Code name is “Edgar”? As in Edgar Bergen? (Not Edgar ALLEN Poe.)
Otherwise, good post. Very insightful.

If you think you are living in the land of the free you need to wake up and pay attention to what is going on around you. You are much less free today than you were before your beloved Bush took office.
We were less free of fear since we didn’t have a fear-monger named George Bush running this country into the ground.
We were free to enjoy our personal privacy, something that is no longer true thanks to George Bush who thinks our constitution is just a piece of paper, unless of course he is appointing a Supreme Court Justice, then he loves the constitution and wants to appoint a “strict constructionist”.
We were free to not fear that a member of our family might one day disappear by our government and we would have no way to know where they were or even if they were still alive.
If this is the kind of freedom you cherish, there are a lot of third world countries you could move to.

It doesn’t get anyone riled up (apparently it DID make JPark physically ill, understandably) because no one takes it seriously. Why does no one take it seriously? Because with his approval ratings and welded bond to the Worst Administration Ever, any ticket headed up by The Dick Cheney would guarantee that Dennis Kucinich could get elected president even if all the other Democratic candidates dropped out. Hell, throw Tancredo on the ticket and the Dems could probably run William Jefferson and still win.
So keep at it, Mr. pee. We’re with you.

Hell, if they dared to put up a Cheney/Tancredo ticket, the Dems could run William Jefferson, with Michael Moore as his running mate and still win! Although an Oprah/Michael Moore ticket might beat both parties. But why would she take such a cut in pay to a mere $400,000/yr job? (I’m sure Michael would welcome the steady income. In between overhauling Healthcare in America, he could use the rest of his time making documentaries. He wouldn’t want the Veep power that Cheney has now.)
I would not be surprised if that riles up the trolls.

I lived in New Orleans prior to the hurricane, my ten year old son was born there. I know the whole coast from Lake Charles to Pensacola, Florida. I know what used to be there, and what isn’t anymore.
The people of Mississippi picked themselves up by the bootstraps and went to work. The people of New Orleans waited around for someone else to come save them.

Just guessing.

August 6th, 2007 at 11:44 pmWell, I should say I lived there prior to Katrina. We weathered several minor hurricanes while there…
Bottom line: Louisiana knew the levees and seawalls were marginal at best for decades. They had the money to fix them, and spent it on other things. The whole state has been run on graft and political hush money since before the days of Huey P. Long.
The people of New Orleans has plenty of warning, they knew their “leaders” were ripping them off and leaving them vulnerable. Yet they did nothing to change their leadership. They accepted the status quo, and they suffered the terrible consequences.
August 6th, 2007 at 11:58 pmHurricane Katrina exposed the incompetence of Bush to the American people and he has never been able to recover from “good job Brownie”. As in the case of the disaster in MN, we are seeing what happens when funding for infrastructure is cut and the money is used to fund the Iraq war and the surge which has failed.
August 7th, 2007 at 12:09 amYeah, O’Bigmouth, you’re right — the local leaders in NO sure had a lot of say over what the Army Corps of Engineers did with their levees…
I’ve lived on the ICW. I know from experience how quickly the Army Corps “snaps to” in order to address the needs of local communities, and how eager they are to hear the concerns of the people.
You’re a simpleton at best. At worst you’re a fraud. Either way you’re a tool.

It would appear that you, sir, are the fraud. The Intercoastal Waterway has nothing to do with the levies in New Orleans, nor vice-versa. The levies in Louisiana are locally controlled.

National Intelligence Estimate: Al Qaeda stronger and a threat to US homeland
Report points to war in Iraq and Pakistan’s tribal areas as allowing Al Qaeda to regroup.
By Tom A. Peter
from the July 19, 2007 edition
The release of a new report Tuesday that says Al Qaeda has reorganized to pre-9/11 strength and is preparing for a major US strike has sparked debate among government officials and observers about the Bush administration’s foreign policy and counterterrorism efforts. The National Intelligence Estimate assessment indicates that the Islamic terrorist organization’s rise has been bolstered by the Iraq war and the failure to counter extremism in Pakistan’s tribal areas.
“The Terrorist Threat to the US Homeland” report focuses on the next three years and is the first report to review the potential for terrorist attacks exclusively in the United States, reports The Boston Globe. The nation’s 16 intelligence agencies began compiling the report last October and completed their assessment in June. Though the report indicated that Hizbullah may become a threat if the US takes action against Iran or seriously threatens or attacks the Islamic organization, the majority of the report focused on the “rejuvenating effect the Iraq war has had on Al Qaeda.”
Yeah, Bush is making you so much safer.

Comment by O. Bigfoot-in-the-Mouth — August 7, 2007 @ 1:00 am
Leave it to Bigfoot-in-the-Mouth to tell us to google an organization that doesn’t exist, New Orleans Levy(SIC) Board. “Levies” mean tariffs collected; “to levy” means to impose and collect taxes–a thought I know makes you neoCONs shudder. Or perhaps you mean the Jewish family name “Levy,” Mr. bigfoot-in-the-mouth?
August 7th, 2007 at 2:30 amThere is, however, a New Orleans Levee Board, which deals with embankments to prevent flooding. But those who google it should beware of all the neoCON spin surfacing to put all the blame on it, which is obviously what bigfoot-in-the-mouth has been reading, even though he can’t spell the name correctly.
Bush wouldn’t have had a such a poor response to Katrina if New Orleans had a majority White population.
August 7th, 2007 at 3:46 amSo why do you think Nagin had such a poor response, because he is black and the population is black and…uhhh….hmmm….
August 7th, 2007 at 7:05 amWhy does it look like he’s lying about a fish he caught in the Mississippi in that picture…
August 7th, 2007 at 8:06 amNo— Bush takes care of his people.Remember– Bush doesn’t like black people
August 7th, 2007 at 8:16 amNever forget: the Republican convention is scheduled to be held in Minneapolis. You know for certain Bush will move heaven and earth and throw as much money as necessary to get that bridge rebuilt before the convention.
August 7th, 2007 at 8:40 amWithout knowledge of history (even his own history) Bush is bound to repeat it. That’s another way of saying our president is a little woodenhead president Pinocchio.
August 7th, 2007 at 8:48 amAfter all that, Lora, that’s the best you can come up with? I mispelled one word? I apoligize for the mispelling, but your argument is both lame and pointless. If you are going to judge a post by it’s spelling, then you just disqualified half the Bush hating liberal kooks here as well. Furthermore, the correct name is the “Orleans Levee Board”, so if you want to pick “gnatshit out of peppah’”, It would appear the organization you named never existed either.
continued…..
August 7th, 2007 at 9:30 amBush’s visit was just another photo-op, and now that he knows MN is even part of the country, I fear for it.
Bush is a phychopath with a sick ego, who fancies himself a tough guy, but in reality is a fragile little poser. Babs Bush did a number on the kid. It would be nice to get a psych profile on all the candidates, but it seems more important in this country to know their finances, rather than their mental faculties.
For the NSA record, the only chair Bush should occupy is the patient seat in a psychiatrist’s office.
August 7th, 2007 at 11:17 amHow sad that TP categorically blames Bush for the Katrina disaster and unerringly claims that he will do so again.
August 7th, 2007 at 12:50 pmBush was inept and unprepared in his response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. A lot of this had to do with the fact that the majority of the people affected by this disaster were African American. FEMA kept saying that they couldn’t get to the victims soon enough due to flooding but the media had no trouble getting to them. The federal response was poorly managed. Bush has a history of hiring political appointees who have no experience - Michael Brown who used to train Arabian horses before he was selected to head FEMA.
