Will Bush repeat Katrina failures in Minneapolis?»

In a visit to the collapsed bridge in Minneapolis yesterday, President Bush vowed to aid in reconstruction efforts. But the AP reports that “[n]early two years ago, with parts of New Orleans still under water after Hurricane Katrina, Bush made similar declarations in the French Quarter, promising that the government would ’stay as long as it takes to help citizens rebuild their communities and their lives.’” New Orleans City Councilwoman Shelley Midura remarked: “I’m sorry, it takes more than a simple sentence.”

only 532 more days of his lies and incompetence

  2. Evergreen Says:

Of course he might repeat the promises promises course again….but then …somehow this is a smaller amount of money to spare from Haliburton, Boeing etc .

  3. spit take Says:

I guess I wasn’t the only one who instantly recalled the promises made by Bu**sh** two years ago and noted how similar were the promises delivered in Minneapolis.

To the President, this probably looks like another opportunity to demonstrate the bedrock Republican principle — government doesn’t work.

I wonder if they realize that most of us are starting to catch on to the fact that it’s mainly Republican government that doesn’t work.

  4. fastneataverage Says:

Isn’t the Repug convention being held in MSP? If so, you can bet your bottom dollar they’ll have it upright and shining (probably with Bone-her and Rove grinning from ear to ear) for the photo op showing what great work the GOP did in rebuilding the city. Perhaps they should have held the convention in New Orleans.

  5. tanglewood Says:

He has no choice but to clean up this mess–the Republcan National Convention is being held there next year.

  6. Krazny Says:

At least this disaster is on a much smaller scale then New Orleans. They can clean it up much easier then an entire city.

  7. grrtigger Says:

“I stand by this man. I stand by this man because he stands for things. Not only for things, he stands on things. Things like aircraft carriers and rubble and recently flooded city squares. And that sends a strong message: that no matter what happens to America, she will always rebound — with the most powerfully staged photo ops in the world.”

  8. Tom Says:

We in Minnesota have no use for GDumbya. Our state officials and residents will drive the train on this one. We all just had to hold our collective noses when Pickles and GDumbya cruised into town for their photo ops.

We’ll rub Little Timmy Pawlenty’s nose in his “no new tax” BS; we’ll use Little Normie Coleman’s waning influence in Washington. Then, the next chance we get, we’ll vote their pathetic little asses out of office, too.

These two opportunists have been more interested in building a baseball stadium for a billionaire owner and covering for a presi-dunce and his dirty little war in Iraq. We’ll ride them both hard and put them away wet.

  12. Mary Ellen Says:

I think he will rebuild the bridge for one reason only, Minneapolis is hosting the 2008 Republican Convention. He’ll still ignore New Orleans, though…

  14. James McClary Says:

  15. Gregor Samsa Says:

Will Bush repeat Katrina failures in Minneapolis?

Well, it depends. Is it basically an African-America community and/or vote primarily Democratic?

If the answer to either is yes, then sure -Katrina will be repeated.

(I wouldn’t necessarily call it a failure, though. My suspicion is that the neglect of New Orleans was premeditated)

Failures? It seems to me that Bush has accomlished everything he wanted to accomplish in NOLA:
    - Blackwater mercs to keep the French Quarter and Mardi Gras safe.
    - No bid contracts to Halliburton (and others) for cost-plus reconstruction.
    - Trailers contaminated with formaldehyde for lower income residents.
    - Regentrification of NOLA to represent a more well-to-do, white, male constituency.
    - A photo-op in Jefferson Square with his shirt sleeves rolled up, because he does “hard work.”
Minneapolis-St. Paul doesn’t have all of those pesky, low-income, minority, Democratic voters, so there’s no reason to “accomplish” so much. Just repair the bridge and have your “big-tent, party of inclusiveness” convention, which he will not be invited to attend.

of course he will. That’s what happens when you turn over such important jobs to politicians. what makes anyone think that some politician that was elected (or not) has any skill, or interest, in dealing with these things.

leave it to the communities and let the rest of us donate directly to them to help out…it’s worked in the past and it can work again.

Yeah, cuz Dems leadership is soooooooo much better, which is why the Congress’s approval rating isn’t even 1/2 of the approval rating of President Bush.

It is one thing to trip up an opponent, and another to succeed yourself. If it weren’t for the pressing issues coming from security and economic pressures around the world, the Dems would never be forced to do anything. As it is, they barely do the right thing in time - fund troops, allow wiretapping of foreign targets, etc.

The new stadium is committed. In an ironic twist of fate, the Twins organization rescheduled the ground-breaking ceremony that had been planned for the day after the bridge collapsed.

Here’s another piece of irony for you — the crook who owns the Twins supposedly couldn’t pay for the entire thing himself. But somehow he has found the money to quietly go around and buy up the land adjoining the new stadium site. Ain’t free enterprise great?

Oh, gawd, another poor, misinformed right-winger repeating discredited talking points…

Here’s a list of Congressional approval poll results over the last few months.

Here’s a similar list of poll results for President Bush.

The RCL average for Congress is 28.8%. The most recent results for the President are 30%, 29% and 31%.

Pretty damn close, and hardly 1/2 of the approval rating of Bush. So either cite the poll results of which you speak (and they’d better be comparing apples to apples) or STFU.

  35. Sam Says:

Being a Minneapolis resident I can state with certainty that our governor, T Paw, won’t want the ‘08 convention going down with protests about the bridge going on outside the arena. Obviously there will be protests (I know I’ll be there) but the general populous tends to ignore these unless the issue has a Minnesota angle in which case the local media will be all over it. Remember, we’ve elected a professional wrestler and it looks like Al Franken is next. Republicans only get by in the state by opposing spending and tax increases and they won’t be able to play hardball on this one.

Personally I can’t think of one time in his whole tenure in the White House where Bush has done the right thing. He says one thing in public and then he does something entirely different. And amazingly enough, he somehow gets away with it every time.

Get past the illusion that President Bush is incompetent. He is, perhaps, the most competent President this country has ever had, in terms that really matter to the Presidency.

Bush has expanded the Power of the Presidency far beyond any predecessor and far beyond the vision of the founding fathers.

Bush has had his way on nearly every major piece of legislation he has introduced, with perhaps the sole exception being the privatizaiton of Social Security.

Bush has managed to get Congress to insulate himself and his subordinates from War Crimes Charges.

Bush has rewarded his supporters with untold wealth.

Bush has avoided being held accountable for anything.

Bush continues to garner the support of the ruling elite.

In politics, the only thing that really matters is getting power, expanding power, and keeping power. In this, Bush has been incredibly competent.

I have no disagreement with the points you make except for one. I do not believe it is Bush that so expertly gained the power to do all those things. I believe it was Cheney, using Bush to attain that stature. Bush really is just a puppet, a convenient whipping boy for anything that goes wrong. Who does everyone blame for the debacle in Iraq? Cheney or Bush? We all know that Cheney and his PNAC friends/fellow adminsitration officials wanted this Iraq invasion from before the beginning. Even before Dick Cheney was asked to pick Bush’s 2000 Running Mate (he chose himself, of course), and well before Dick Cheney put together the transition team that selected the incoming cabinet (he chose many PNAC members, of course). And did you know that Cheney’s Secret Service Code name is “Edgar”? As in Edgar Bergen? (Not Edgar ALLEN Poe.)

    Otherwise, good post. Very insightful.

In between overhauling Healthcare in America, he could use the rest of his time making documentaries. He wouldn’t want the Veep power that Cheney has now.)

Bottom line: Louisiana knew the levees and seawalls were marginal at best for decades. They had the money to fix them, and spent it on other things. The whole state has been run on graft and political hush money since before the days of Huey P. Long.

The people of New Orleans has plenty of warning, they knew their “leaders” were ripping them off and leaving them vulnerable. Yet they did nothing to change their leadership. They accepted the status quo, and they suffered the terrible consequences.

National Intelligence Estimate: Al Qaeda stronger and a threat to US homeland
Report points to war in Iraq and Pakistan’s tribal areas as allowing Al Qaeda to regroup.

    By Tom A. Peter
from the July 19, 2007 edition
The release of a new report Tuesday that says Al Qaeda has reorganized to pre-9/11 strength and is preparing for a major US strike has sparked debate among government officials and observers about the Bush administration’s foreign policy and counterterrorism efforts. The National Intelligence Estimate assessment indicates that the Islamic terrorist organization’s rise has been bolstered by the Iraq war and the failure to counter extremism in Pakistan’s tribal areas.

“The Terrorist Threat to the US Homeland” report focuses on the next three years and is the first report to review the potential for terrorist attacks exclusively in the United States, reports The Boston Globe. The nation’s 16 intelligence agencies began compiling the report last October and completed their assessment in June. Though the report indicated that Hizbullah may become a threat if the US takes action against Iran or seriously threatens or attacks the Islamic organization, the majority of the report focused on the “rejuvenating effect the Iraq war has had on Al Qaeda.”

Yeah, Bush is making you so much safer.

Leave it to Bigfoot-in-the-Mouth to tell us to google an organization that doesn’t exist, New Orleans Levy(SIC) Board. “Levies” mean tariffs collected; “to levy” means to impose and collect taxes–a thought I know makes you neoCONs shudder. Or perhaps you mean the Jewish family name “Levy,” Mr. bigfoot-in-the-mouth?
There is, however, a New Orleans Levee Board, which deals with embankments to prevent flooding. But those who google it should beware of all the neoCON spin surfacing to put all the blame on it, which is obviously what bigfoot-in-the-mouth has been reading, even though he can’t spell the name correctly.

Bush was inept and unprepared in his response to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. A lot of this had to do with the fact that the majority of the people affected by this disaster were African American. FEMA kept saying that they couldn’t get to the victims soon enough due to flooding but the media had no trouble getting to them. The federal response was poorly managed. Bush has a history of hiring political appointees who have no experience - Michael Brown who used to train Arabian horses before he was selected to head FEMA.
