I’d rather that your mother and daughter die in an Islamo-terror attack than to risk the remote possibility that some government official might hear me masturbating over the phone.

Wow! I think that comment says about all we need to know about you, hateful, ignorant, fearful, spiteful and perverted. In point of fact, terrorists come from all over the world, from every religion, and are not really that big of a deal. Our government is just as religiously fundamental, repressive and bigoted as any "islamo-fascist" only you don't see it because you probably hate all the same people. The difference is, they ARE a big deal, they have all the weapons they need to reduce this entire planet to a smoking heap. If you give them unlimited power they will become completely corrupted and it won't matter what you do on the phone, they will be listening and they will use it to their advantage if they want to, at your expense. If you really want to protect yourself from terrorism go to some country like china or russia where they listen to your phone calls all the time, well, they still have terrorist attacks, but at least you don't have to wait around for bush and friends to slowly turn you into a human farm animal, you can have it NOW!

#220 Your calls are fair game. Allegedly, the fact that you receive calls from overseas make your calls (all of them) fair game . . . but fact is, all of your calls are fair game. The fact that you receive calls from overseas only makes you more likely to be tapped.

Carnivore is the key. It's the technology that makes tapping your phone and computer so esay. Before, it was only used in Europe, Africa and South America (supposedly), now it can be used domesticly. This legislation may only be good for six months, but its been in a state of readiness for years. Don't expect domestic wiretapping to end in your lifetime.

Bad news for all.

How is this different that calling someone in the US who has their phone tapped? Should the FBI/Police have to get a warrant to listen to a phone call I make to someone who has their phone tapped?

Sure, they have a warrant to listen to that person's call but not my calls.

I'd suggest you're probably talking about the 15 year anniversary of this product, not it's launch.

2hope4: If you have nothing to hide, then just why is the White House obstructing justice and stonewalling about Rove, Miers, Bolten, & others from testifying under oath about the attorney purge? Could it be to cover-up a whole rat's nest of illegal shit this administration participated in wholesale? May "God" reward these neo-nazi fascists accordingly.

If you have nothing to hide than you have nothing to fear......the government is trying to catch people who deceivingly smile at us as if they are nice and they like us but are actually filled with hatred in their hearts and minds....we must pray for their conversion/ their maturing to realize the error of their way.......if you insist on having fear then remember that God is recording everything, so don't think that anyone is getting away with anything, all will be revealed, people continuing in doing bad are existing in mercy, when that mercy ends there is going to be hell to pay, we good guys have got to influence people to be the best that they can be before it is too late, if one does not speak, pray, try then the blood of the sinner will be on their hands and punishment will reach this far.....so live to the fullest and don't have fear

liked your comment, Dreamcrusher. i don't think the oversight will work quite as well as that, but it's not as much of a blank check as greenwald made it seem.

interesting interview on FISA between a former NSC lawyer and the director of the center for national security studies can be found through this post

Steve . . . good idea. Unfortunately, some of the donors who would be best suited to this suggested campaign are not American citizens. They live abroad but are staunch supporters of Democracy, based upon their own tragic history.

George Soros for example.

Dear George, can you help us?

No need for a wiretap . . . this is a blatent all out SOS.

I don't know if this is a good or workable idea but why not start a writing campaign to the donors to the Congressmen who supported the FISA law asking them to provide no more donations until FISA is fixed. Can't you get the list of donors from their donor filings? We can break up the list and search for addresses, esp. major donors. I think the Congressmen would be horrified if people contacted their finantial supporters. Even those not up for election. Donors might run and hide from the exposure. You can get them where it really hurts. I certainly would be willing to support the effort.

I certainly would be willing to support the effort.

"The government can monitor every single phone call that London is making to you in Washington, D.C., to any of the viewers at home. … They can listen to every single international call that you make or receive, every e-mail that you write, and e-mail that you receive, in complete and total secrecy."

Nothing to worry about.

Alberto Gonzales would never, and I mean never, politicize and misuse his newly-granted surveillance powers, handed to him by the mad dog Blue Dog Democrats. and all the Republicans in Congress.

Oh, wait, unless he uses his newly-granted spying capability to target Democrats while letting "culture of corruption" Republicans remain unsurveilled, similar to the way he's politiczed the Justice Department, for the purpose of "winning" elections for Republicans.

Now, combine Gonzales getting (in the year before a major presidential election) the potential for unchecked and unlimited spying-on-U.S.-citizens (i.e. Democrats) with the recent report that Republicans are proposing a government-funded Stasi-like citizenry snitch program...and one wonders if the newest Rovian/Gonzalesian "steal elections for Republicans" scheme involves putting a whole lot of Democrats in jail so they can't vote in the next election.

Me? Paranoid?

After the past seven years, I wouldn't put anything past the Bush crime family attempting.

Halliburton awarded a contract to build $385 million worth of detention centers by the end of 2007 to hold illegal immigrants..."and for other purposes."

Corrupt conservatives in Congress, both Repubican and Democrat, handing Alberto Gonzales unchecked and unlimited spying power, which he definitely will use for partisan political purposes.

A proposed citizenry snitch program, paid for with taxpayer money but probably with only Young Republicans and old-fart Republicans being hired.

The most corrupt, law-breaking Attorney General in American history not resigning, even though not a single patriotic American citizen trusts him...because he's stated that he still has a lot of work to do...cleaning up America.

(That is, Gonzales is hanging around so he can implement the neo-con Repubican plan to disenfranchise as many Democratic voters as possible before the November 2008 elections...by charging Democrats with crimes based on manufactured evidence gleaned from super-secret warrantless spying programs that no longer have to be reviewed by the FISA court, but is solely based on Alberto Gonzales' say so).

We already all know Gonzales is a liar. He'll claim that he would never use his newly-granted spying powers for partisan political purposes, but his record at the DOJ proves otherwise.

And if these corrupt and completely anti-American Republicans can get enough Democrats charged and thrown in jail before November 2008 (thus losing their right to vote), then the result (from the Republican viewpoint) will exceed all the previous attempts by them to "cage" Democratic Party voters.

Like I said before, I wouldn't put anything past these corrupt, power-mad Republicans

After connecting all these dots, I believe I know how they plan on stealing the November 2008 elections, and unless patriotic members of Congress immediately strip Gonzales of the spying power just granted him, then we can kiss our beloved democracy goodbye...and change the acronym for the FBI to KGB.

So how do you “reasonably believe” that an e-mail is going to be read by someone overseas?

---------

The same way they "reasonably believed" that Saddam had WMDs and was a "gathering threat" to America. And we know how well that turned out. Everything is based on supposition.

A guy out in CA, I believe it was, was paid a visit by the FBI after he made negative remarks about Bush and a co-worker overheard them and called the feds. Who the hell knows what that co-worker told the feds, but it got their attention.
