Keith Olbermann’s ‘Countdown’ grows.
The LA Times reports that Olbermann has found a way to deliver the news in an interesting format:
More than any other news show on cable, MSNBC’s “Countdown With Keith Olbermann” is us.
This has less to do with the host than the format, which is all about ranking things and listing things, prioritizing information in the way we’ve become acclimated to consume it: as somebody’s — anybody’s — best-of. [..]
But it’s the structure of “Countdown,” which averaged 721,000 viewers in July, a bump for the show, that seems so savant-like.
Tonight, Olbermann will moderate an AFL-CIO sponsored presidential forum, beginning at 7 pm on MSNBC. See more details here.

The 5 to 1 countdown format isn’t any more “dumbed down” than any news show, it’s just a format — nothing more. As far as other gimmicks go, Colbert has “The Word”, Rush Limbaugh has his “Stack of Stuff”, and Olbermann has his “Worst Person in the World”. Big deal. The important thing is the content.

It lures in the average TeeVee viewer by promising to get to the Paris and Lindsay news, but first we need to get through story numbers 5 through 3. The fluff usually only gets about 20 minutes out of 60. Pretty darn good compared to most TV news programs.

When Countdown first came on, I had no idea who KO was, and the format put me off. It was Keith himself that kept bringing me back. He was the only one who was asking the questions of guests that I wanted answered.

The show has had nothing but bumps for 2 years. Countdown is the fastest growing program on cable news. Compare that to The O’Reilly Fester, which has lost 50% of its audience in the same time period.

Olbermann is also driving the gains of MSNBC that has resulted in the network recently beating CNN in primetime.

I am a “right wing” guy but I enjoy reading this blog and what the authors and commenters contribute. The readers and authors here don’t hide their bias and that honesty makes it interesting.

Olbermann and his viewers tolerate the list format his show has been shoehorned into — we know full well that the #1 story every night is trash that his producers ordered. Anyone who thinks we watch the show because of the list format needs to rent a clue.
