Right-Winger Accuses Iraq Vet Of ‘Stabbing’ His ‘Fellow Men And Women In Uniform’ In The Back
During a debate on MSNBC’s Hardball this evening, retired Air Force Lt. Colonel Robert “Buzz” Patterson, a right-wing radio host, gratuitously attacked Iraq war veteran Jon Soltz, the chairman of VoteVets.org, exclaiming “I am so happy you’re not serving in Iraq right now, stabbing your fellow men and women in uniform like you do back in the states.”
Patterson claimed that Soltz didn’t know what he was talking about because he “didn’t get the memo” that “we’re fighting al Qaeda in Iraq.” “You know what, I don’t need the memo because I was in Iraq,” responded Soltz. “You read the newspaper, I was in Iraq. That’s the difference between you and I.”
Patterson muttered back that he had “been to Iraq too,” but Soltz laughed at his claim. “Are you talking about your rah-rah-sis-kum-bah cheerleader tours that the White House took you on or are you talking about as a soldier who took the country?” Watch it:
The fact that “Buzz” Patterson would accuse a political opponent such as Soltz of betraying his fellow Americans should come as no surprise. In a May 2007 interview with National Review Online, Patterson accused “Democrat politicians, big media, academia, popular culture, and nongovernmental organizations” of forming “a Fifth Column” that is “facilitating defeat against Islamo-fascism.”
Additionally, Patterson’s only experience in Iraq was part of a dog-and-pony show tour of Iraq. In 2005, Patterson, along with four other conservative talk show hosts, traveled to Iraq on a “truth tour” to tell “the good news that the old-line liberal news media won’t tell you about.” That visit was shepherded by the Office of Media Outreach, a taxpayer-funded publicity arm of the Department of Defense.
Patterson has never been interested in debating the merits of redeployment; instead, he repeatedly falls back on accusing Bush critics of treason. And yet he’s given a high-profile platform to spout his over-the-top rhetoric.
Transcript:
SOLTZ: Let me tell you something. You weren’t in Kosovo when I was in Kosovo under Bill Clinton, we had body armor on the ground, we have armored Humvees on the ground.
PATTERSON: I was in Bosnia, John! I was in Bosnia!
MATTHEWS: OK, I want to do this clearly. Let’s pretend this is a court room and we need facts. John, you believe that Hillary Clinton is a credible national defense expert. You believe she is the strongest candidate of the Democrats running to defend the country, including continuing the campaign in Iraq.
SOLTZ: I think that all the Democrats are stronger than the Republicans, because the Republicans right now have opposed the increase of the size of our military for the last seven years. It is absolutely ridiculous.
PATTERSON: That is so incorrect, Soltz.
SOLTZ: They have the dedication to super duper defense systems in the skies that have alienated our allies and the Democrats have a position that we will take the fight to Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. I was in Kosovo when we haduparmored Humvees. Why didn’t we have the unarmored equipment in. Kosovo that we do not have in Iraq? It is ridiculous. Bill Clinton was a better commander-in-chief than George Bush.
MATTHEWS: John, nobody’s getting anything here. Let me ask you, Buzz Patterson, this is a question. Based upon all that you know about the Clintons, including the former President, six months into office, how many American troops will remain in Iraq. We have a 160,000 troops in Iraq; will she yank them all out?
PATTERN: She will yank about half out, which will be a debacle. It’ll be a nightmare, and Jon, I am so happy that you are not serving in Iraq right now, stabbing your fellow men and women in uniform -
MATTHEWS: Alright, alright. Jon Soltz, six months into a Clinton presidency, how many troops will we see in Iraq?
SOLTZ: You ‘re going to see an offensive against Al Qaeda in Afghanistan; you’ll probably see a redistribution of troops to take the fight to fight the enemy that attacked us on 9/11.
MATTHEWS: You believe though – you both agree that she’ll cut the number of troops dramatically in Iraq?
SOLTZ: Absolutely.
MATTHEWS: You say that too, Buzz?
PATTERSON: I agree with that, I think we’ll be out of there in about 12 months.
SOLTZ: We need to take the fight to the people who attacked this country on 9/11, the people of Senator Clinton’s state – .
PATTERSON: Hey Jon, you didn’t get the memo, buddy: we’re fighting Iraq – Al Qaeda in Iraq.
SOLTZ: You know what, I don’t need the memo, because was in Iraq. You read the newspaper -
PATTERSON: Jon, I’ve been to Iraq too.
SOLTZ: Yeah, are you talking about the rah-rah-sis-koom-bah cheerleader tours the White House takes you on?
PATTERSON: Are you still in the Reserves? Are you getting a Department of Defense pension — a Department of Defense paycheck?
SOLTZ: I’m a private citizen right now, chairman of VoteVets.org and an Iraq War veteran.

I am no Clinton lover but for whatever reason the Clintons sure seem to attract some people who appear to develop a very deep personal hatred against them. Soltz tried to deny the military had massive draw downs under Clinton, and of course partisan hack Matthews cut Buzz off when he was trying to make him correct himself. Then Soltz misrepresented the availability of up-armored HMMWVs, claiming we could get things in Kosovo we couldn’t get in Iraq. In reality, the Iraq situation was about a feasible upgrade to current models that was not available during Kosovo- not the M1114 model, which was in Kosovo. But of course, even after Matthews cut Buzz’s rebuttal short, you wouldn’t even include that.
Buzz is right, and Soltz is an ass who does NOT accurately represent our vets and troops. I am a former US Army Airborne Infantryman, and a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan… and compared to me it’s Soltz’s log-pacs and tanker experience that looks like a dog and pony show.

This is the stupidest question posted here because it shows a complete lack of understanding of just why the military is supposed to be non-political.
Officers assigned to the White House, Congress, etc. are chosen on the basis of their qualifications for the positions they are assigned to. To use a political affiliation as a basis for these assignments would be not only a disaster in terms of getting the best qualified people, it would probably be illegal (the Democrats are arguing this very point re the firing of US District Attorneys, the 8 in question all being Republicans. At least Bill fired all 93 without discrimination as to their political affiliations).
To be assigned the duty of carrying the nuclear launch codes/orders for the President is one of the highest honors given to any military officer. Col. Patterson obviously was chosen because of his qualifications. This is something you cannot take away from him.
Patterson served in Bosnia; Soltz served in Iraq. Accept their service as is. Even I, who has been one of John Kerry’s biggest critics, acknowledge his military service in Vietnam (which did show bravery and ingenuity on several ocassions). I’ll leave it at that.
I wish bloggers here would show some signs of intelligence and knowledge about how things work, instead of just ranting and raving. I love a good rant, but it is hard to find a rational one here. Very disappointing for my first visit to this site.

I was in Air Sea Rescue (ARRS) attached to first the 12th TAC and then the 483rd, with duty at Cam Ranh and in Pleiku. Spent some time on the ground but nothing like you Gyrenes. Got my PH from a stray piece of shrapnel while waiting out my own extraction after the penetrator was unclipped due to some bad stuff from the ground.
You corpsmen were the best with the biggest brass ones.
And it is funny how the trolls here never served but can’t stand that others did and are against this illegal war. Probably from playing too many x-box war games. They don’t have a clue about reality. Is very safe to fight from the safety of the keyboard and joystick, I guess.

Yes, they would rather be at home with their families, but they understand (unlike you) that what they are doing needs to be done, and they understand they are fighting for the betterment of others — exactly what they signed on the dotted line to do. This bickering and wanting us to lose in Iraq talk really ashames me, and pisses off my fellow Marines.
Want us to win? Pull out the cameras, and take off our choke-collars, we’ll win this war in 6 weeks — you won’t like how we do it, but we’ll secure the country the way we were trained…
Of course, you won’t like anything we do under the command of our current CiC. God I hope we don’t elect another Clinton, when he was in office he GUTTED our funding and did NOTHING for the troops. Putting an inadequate number of troops into a battle, causing them to fight without proper armor, demolishing the infrastructure of a nation while failing to anticipate the fallout from removing a nations’ government has served no cause other than the so called Iraq aq, and the self same lovers of endless war.
The troops also have loved ones and children, who are victims of fear and worry and loss.
The whole “support the troops” thing is a hijacking of the true issues of accountability for poor planning and poor execution if a poor plan. Reminds me of the blame game going around about who will be “responsible” for the next attack. Everybody wants to evade that label, so they punt the issue–along with the constitution–
