Countering Ann Coulter.

Countering Ann Coulter.

In a surprising twist, groups typically attacked by controversial ultra-conservative Ann Coulter are glad to see her visiting Xavier University next month in Cincinnati. “They are asking for $5 donations for student groups ‘who represent the values Coulter vilifies in her speeches and writings.’ … Groups opposed to Coulter’s views are planning a separate forum and rally, also on campus, where they say they will distribute the funds.”

“Every protest and every heckler she attracts wherever she appears means more publicity for her and bigger speaking fees,” said Patrick McNearny, president of the Xavier Gay-Straight Alliance. “We are glad to be able to do something different that is a win for the Xavier community.”

  18. AnonymousByChoice says:

    I don’t get it.

What are they doing with the $5 donations? Are all the groups she attacks planning to see her speak? They should – perhaps they can have the dialloauge they want if they go. If the majority of audience members are made up of the groups she attacks, then if there is a Q&A of some kind, the majority of questions could come from these groups, rather than loving comments from Republicans and conservatives.

I don’t see anywhere in the article, anything saying these hated groups will actually go see her.

  19. Probus says:

Coulter is a homophobic, racist and sexist individual. Her comments against the 9-11 widows were arrogant and stupid. She called them “harpies who profited from the tragic loss of their husbands.” That is unacceptable. On 9-11 every single American grieved with these courageous women without whom we wouldn’t have even had a 9-11 Commission which Bush opposed from the beginning. They deserve our respect and our admiration. She singled them out for only one reason – they supported Kerry. Coulter can be her own worst enemy after her hateful comments about Edwards her column was dropped from newspapers. Advertisers left her website. She is out of the mainstream.

  20. tarazan says:

And what can anybody learn from Coulter sitting listening to her? !

There michael goes knocking public schools again. But when I pointed out that my public high school produced a Nobel laureate in physics, a former Secretary of State, a Newbery medalist and at least one Pulitzer Prize winner and asked him what illustrious people graduated from his supposedly superior private school, it took him three months of prodding to come up with the lame reply “I don’t know.” “Don’t know” pretty much sums up michael-troll.

  89. The Shadow says:

Ann Coulter is an idiot who doesn’t have anything to say, so she attacks those who disagree with her. I called her an idiot because that’s how she acts. For someone who pretends to be intelligent, she can’t present her side of any issue with hurling insults at her opponents. I’d like to see her talk to so called liberals without resorting to insults. Since she can’t, I’ll do a little trash talking about her. She’s so skinny, she looks like a girrafe on crack.

  92. missmolly says:

I think it’s nice that these student groups have found a creative way to raise funds, but if I was a student there, I wouldn’t participate. Ann Coulter’s persona (the one she uses to make a living, anyway) basically screams “PAY ATTENTION TO ME!!!” The only way she gets attention is by saying the most outrageous things possible, hurling insults, using straw man arguments, and suggesting that anyone she doesn’t like is a homosexual. And when people start to yawn, she has to ramp it up.

Protesting a person like her in any form is just fanning the flames. Best way to deal with her is to ignore her. With nothing to feed on, she will wither.

  93. Probus says:

    Comment by The Shadow — August 8, 2007 @ 11:11 pm

In addition to her routine racist and homophobic hate speech, she has in the past plagiarized the words of other conservatives. Olbermann proved this on his show.

  94. Stuart Eugene Thiel says:

The Ann Coulter phenomenon is easier to understand if you think of her as a stand-up comic, not a pundit. She’s not trying to persuade anybody or explain anything; she’s simply pushing buttons to provoke a certain emotional response. That’s what stand-up comics do. They want to provoke laughter; she (and her ilk) wants to provoke resentment.

Nobody in the comic’s audience cares if his or her stories are true; what they want is the set up and the punch line. And that’s what Coulter delivers, except that instead of trying to make people laugh, she’s massaging their resentments about, well, everything.

This accounts for, among other things, everybody’s indifference to the narrative incoherence of her books. Narrative coherence doesn’t matter to Coulter any more than it matters to Dave Barry or the Marx Brothers. Most of the words in the book are there merely to carry the reader from one setup/punch to the next.

  95. bitblt says:

    From Coulter’s article was week

Did I miss the ‘hip’ part?

Most important, Democrats resolutely refuse to tell the poor the secret to not being poor: Keep your knees together until marriage.

That’s it. Not class size, not preschool, not even vouchers, though vouchers would obviously improve the education of all students. You could have lunatics running the schools — and often do — and if the kids live with married parents, they will end up at good colleges and will lead happy, productive lives 99 percent of the time

Is it Ok to say on TP that good advice is good advice regardless of who says it?

  96. Dave says:

Ann Coulter’s only job is to keep saying outrageous things so we can scream about it. The more she talks, the more distracted we get from important things like Iraq and health care… and as an added bonus for her, she sells books which really just keep the cycle going.

If we really want her to go away, we just have to ignore her.

  97. Johnny Swank says:

You are an idiot. You seem to know a lot about republicans. Sounds like you know them a bit to well. A closet republican is in here lefties!

  98. Probus says:

The best way to deal with the lies of someone like Coulter is to call her out on those lies. Ignoring her further empowers her and her hateful speech. Racist and sexist and inaccurate speech must always be called out. We can’t sit back and let her spew her lies.

  99. Uncle Ho says:

Trannie Coulter’s Adam’s Apple is 2X the size of her bra cup.

  100. J Lewd says:

“I’m more of a man than any liberal.” By which, she means she has three testicles.

  101. Dave says:

Why do Republicans like this woman so much? Is this what the Republican party is all about? Bashing everyone who doesn’t walk the tight-rope of their ideologies?
The Republicans won’t be happy until this country is exactly like Iran & Iraq, whose hard-liner religious biggots cause all the problems.
It’s no wonder the republicans are down in the polls.
I don’t think they represent the true republican ideal. Unfortunately, the party has been hijacked by religious idiotic morons.
    Think about it.
