REPORT: ‘The Next Few Months’ On Iraq That Never End

REPORT: ‘The Next Few Months’ On Iraq That Never End»

The Bush administration and its supporters have pledged to Americans time and again during the past four years that the “next few months” in Iraq will be the “decisive, critical period” of the war.

The implication has always been that U.S. forces just need to hold on a little while longer for things to get better. Using an interactive timeline tool, the Center for American Progress has catalogued the broken record of false claims we’ve been hearing. Some examples:

timelineiraq.gif

TOM FRIEDMAN: It might be over in a week, it might be over in a month, it might be over in six months, but what’s the rush? Can we let this play out, please?” [NPR, 6/3/04]

DICK CHENEY: I think they’re in the last throes, if you will, of the insurgency. [Larry King Live, 5/30/05]

JOE LIEBERMAN (I-CT): By the end of this year, we will begin to draw down significant numbers of American troops. [Washington Post, 7/7/06]

JOHN McCAIN (R-AZ): If you talk to most military experts, we’re in a critical and crucial time. We’re either going to lose this thing or win this thing within the next several months.” [Meet The Press, 11/12/06]

ZALMAY KHALILZAD: Iraq Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki “has a window of a couple months. … If the perception is that this unity government is not able to deal with this issue, then a big opportunity would have been lost.” [Washington Post, 9/30/06]

Four years later, Iraq is still plagued with violence and political instability. Since the beginning of the invasion, 3,679 U.S. soldiers and tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians have died. “August has begun with a wave of U.S. troop deaths,” and Iraq’s unity government remains in disarray.

The United States has no good options given the strategic and tactical mistakes made in Iraq since 2002, but simply staying the course with an indefinite military presence is not advancing U.S. interests.

For a progressive strategy on the way forward in Iraq, read “Strategic Reset,” the Center for American Progress’s plan for reclaiming control of U.S. security in the Middle East.

I am expecting in October the slight bump in Bush’s popularity will sink quicker then the titanic, when it becomes obvious that the “wait until September” crowd are still afflicted with head in the ass syndrome.

  3. Tom Says:

Why on earth do citizens not get outraged by all this? I mean, what exactly has the Bush administration done RIGHT - besides ruining the country and increasing the wealth of a few friends? Why are there not streets full of protesters demanding answers and performance? It boggles the mind to think we still take the abuse 6 yrs later. We are such pansies.

Well the Freidman is a carefully calibrated number: about as long as a season of Desperate Housewives, or 24 or American Idol. Americans aren’t smart enough to see that each season is really just like the one before….. ‘it’s ALL NEW!’ and they believe it

  9. DigDug Says:

    #3 Comment by Tom — August 8, 2007 @ 1:31 pm

    Yes!! Where is the outrage?

I guess it’s hard to maintain after 6 years of slow bleed. Slow bleed on troop deaths, slow bleed on stolen liberties, slow bleed on scandals…

  10. BARTLEBEE Says:

Maybe we should start counting the months in dead Americans.

    1 months = Approx 75 Dead Americans.

So the real question is how many more dead Americans should we wait?

Absolutely. Americans are to easy to distract.

  12. Uncle Ho Says:

I’ve seen this movie before. It sucked in Vietnam, now the Apocalypse Redux remake is worse than the original. In Vietnam, Westmoreland always wanted more troops, more time, and more time, more troops. It is being repeated in Iraq…just like Vietnam. “scuse me while I leave the theater before the end of the film.

  13. dim wit Says:

    I can see it now:

Good timeline. Yes, this is Vietnam all over again. Difference? The enemy knew that we lost Vietnam, and why, and the Republicans didn’t.

Tom Friedman is the major pundit culprit here. Why anyone listens to him (or has ever listened to him) boggles the mind.

  19. Ringo Says:

    Interview with Iraqi translator:

MJT: What will happen if the Americans leave next year?

Hammer: Rivers of blood everywhere. Syria and Iran will take pieces of Iraq. Anti-American governments will laugh. You will be a joke of a country that no one will take seriously.

I will kill myself if it happens. I am completely serious. The militias will hunt down and kill me and my family. I will beat them to it by killing myself.

I worked for the U.S. government for four years. Everyone who works as an interpreter for four years and gets a signature from a General or a Senator gets a Green Card. My hope is to get this somehow. I will do anything for this.

I am doing this for my son. Everything for my son. I don’t want my son living here getting into religion and militias and Al Qaeda. I want my son to be free, to have a girlfriend, to get married, and to be a good citizen.

  20. The Shadow Says:

Who knows, the Shadow knows: That this thing will be over in the next couple of months! No, I mean the next 6 months. What I really meant to say was, this will be over in the next year. I’ve never said this would be over quickly. This will be over in the next 10 years. It will probably take 20 years to win in Iraq. If we obtain victory in Iraq in 40 years, it will be worth it. Why are we in such a hurry in win the war? Who needs to win a war when you can just fight forever?

The above quotes will come from the usual suspects at some point in the next 50 years. I can see Sen. Liebermann saying things like this as he kisses more Republican butt.

I’ll leave the debate on the rationale for invading to someone else. 28. RUCerious Says:

    helina, ~
They’re just going to leave the massive debt they’ve piled up for the next administration, knowing it’s going to be a democratic majority for the next decade or so. That’ll be just about enough time to undo the fiscal, moral and political damage done to the nation and the world.

  34. bobwurst Says:

    YO Ringo,

So how will this not happen? It’s either next fall, or next summer, or five or ten years, but you republicans have so completly screwed up every aspect of your occupation that there will never be a viable, resonable democracy in Iraq where your masked american wannabe will be safe. The longer we stay the more american lives will be lost and ruined, the more american families will be destroyed by death and dismemberment, and ptsd, and the more Iraqis will be klled, and terrorists spawned and trained, and armed, and the more hatred there will be for our country. You people just want to run out the clock, get a democrat in the Whitehouse who you can blame for your screw ups.

And I don’t recall Saddamn or the Iraqis inviting us into their country, so I guess that would make you wrong.

  40. Ben Dover Says:

    # 3. The reason citizens dont get outraged by this is simple. More people get their “news” from Faux Noise than any other television outlet. Rush Limbaugh is heard by more than 20 million people a day on over 600 radio stations. Bill O’Lielly is the most popular person on TV and 7 million people a day listen to Michael Savage’s “Savage World”. The educated among us get this news and become enraged. The majority of us watch Faux. No wonder they aren’t enraged. They are probably still getting nonstop coverage of Anna Nicole Smith’s funeral.

  44. NoOneYouKnow Says:

Bushco is going to keep spending as much time, treasure and lives as it takes until those Iraqis settle down and realize we’re not leaving without their oil. Or maybe they’ll all kill each other with the weapons we’re giving both sides. If Iraq comes apart and Iran takes over the part with most of the oil, we’ll fix their wagon too. It’s our oil until someone can make us say it’s not, and Bushie is stayin’ the course (from his air-conditioned “ranch” in Texas).

  46. Truthiness Says:

    Happy Guy,

Pretty pathetic that you’re happy about a 34% approval rating, but then again 34 was the year you lost your virginity, okay so it was with your mom. And the only reason that rating has gone up is the media’s silence on Iraq, the deaths, the walkout of the Sunni’s and what it means for their already troubled demokkkracy.

Well, actually the problem started back in 1991, when heavy sanctions were laid upon the general population of Iraq, and as any economic sanctions it only affects the population, not the members of the govt. I would bet that Saddam didnt have a problem eating 3 times a day…pretty much like Cuba.

Economic sanctions have only one goal: to mobilize the people against its government. Thats how you change a regime without invading a country. It happened in NIcaragua, Chile, etc. It hasnt been effective in Cuba and it wasnt very efficient in Iraq. Then you invade.

    “Cordesman distances himself O’Hanlon/Pollack”

No he doesn’t. He merely builds off of their argument:
    O’H & P say

We are finally getting somewhere in Iraq, at least in military terms.

Cordesman uses this premise as a starting point, and continues to say:

The attached trip report does, however, show there is still a tenuous case for strategic patience in Iraq, and for timing reductions in US forces and aid to Iraqi progress rather than arbitrary dates and uncertain benchmarks. It recognizes that strategic patience is a high risk strategy, but it also describes positive trends in the fighting, and hints of future political progress.

Basically, the O’Hanlon/Pollack piece was used to get people to see the progress made (militarily) in Iraq. This Cordesman piece is saying that, even though the surge was a success militarily, the Iraqis still need to step their game up before we can leave.

The best way to avoid being accused of issuing tired talking points is to come up with something original. (This is not exclusively directed at you, Ringo — it’s to all trolls who can only get their arguments from Rush or some other talking head)

We have people who post in here who raise reasonably intelligent arguments from a conservative point of view, and these people are worth responding to with lively but respectful debate.

How to know the difference? Here’s a partial list of things I am getting VERY tired of seeing:

    1) “Congress’ 14% approval rating”
    2) “Democrat-controlled Congress” (as the blame for every ill in the world)
    3) “Clinton did it, too”
    4) “taxed to death” (usually used as an argument against UHC)
    5) “Hussein Obama” (that one was tired before it even left the starting gate)
    6) “Clinton lied”
    7) “What about Vince Foster?” (ruled a suicide — move on)
    8) “We have to fight them there to avoid fighting them here” (that one has NEVER been adequately explained)
    9) “Libs want to surrender” (or cut ‘n run, or wimp out, or whatever)
    10) “You don’t have the balls to impeach!” (impeachment is a serious matter and should never be a “balls” contest)

This is but a partial list. I’m sure others can add to it.

No freedom of speech, no freedom of religion, no freedom of association but OIL, OIL, OIL! Whoopee.) If you ain’t makin’ a seven figure paycheck, you don’t figure in the equation.

    If you’re wearing a burka, you’re screwed.

You realize Mecca is a city in an allied country that is full of innocent people?

Seems to me like you’re advocating terrorism.

Yes, I’ve believed that these war-hawks and al-Qaida are cut from the same cloth. You only have to look at how much power Bin Laden’s attacks gave bush, and how much power the Iraq war has given to al-Qaida. They really seem to feed of each other’s actions.

Well, the problem is that for the republican trolls, what’s right or wrong, isn’t based on a system of morality, it’s based on political affiliation.

No, he doesn’t. I doubt he can find Mecca in a map.

Plus, he enjoys killing brown people anyway. They all look the same to him.
