Romney equates sons’ campaigning to military service.»

At an “Ask Mitt Anything” forum this morning in Iowa, former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) was asked about why his sons have not served in the military. His response:

My sons are adults. They’ve chosen not to serve in the military in active duty and I respect their decision in that regard. … And one of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I’d be a great president.

So after the election of 08, when Mittens is relegated to the trash heap of history, then they’ll do their patriotic duty and enlist?

  2. BARTLEBEE Says:

What good little soldiers they are Mitt.

  3. gummitch Says:

I bet he’ll pick up a lot of votes from military families for that one. Two gaffs in one: I respect my boys for choosing not to join the army and what they’re doing is just like fighting in Iraq, anyway.

    What a moron.

  4. Angry One Says:

As you’ll recall, Mitt avoided combat duty in the rice fields of Vietnam by getting multiple deferments to perform his Mormon mission in the vineyards of France. And while candidate Romney has called for a war against virtually all Muslim groups worldwide and pledged to “double Guantanamo,” he has deployed his sons to the cornfields of Iowa to aid his campaign. The perfect hair and gleaming teeth of the Romney clan are found on the Five Brothers blog, not with a band of brothers outside of Baquba.

I think I may be ill. What tripe. If he had stopped talking after the part where he respects their decisions regarding enlistment, it would have been sufficient.

If any of them go on record about being pro-war & pro-invasion., I hope the media climbs all over him/them.

I am tired of hearing pro-war types who are of military enlistment age making excuses why they don’t step up and fight if it’s such a great and valuable idea.

    B) It’s not the liberals who are acting as the main war chickenhawks. I don’t have a problem with those who choose not to fight in Bush’s wars. I DO have a problem with people who support the fighting wholeheartedly as long as they don’t have to get their own hands dirty.

Well, at least you’re admitting that Mitt and his girls are useless cowards. i, for one, would never enlist to fight under a deserter like Bush, because i know he couldn’t be trusted to do right by the services. He’s proven that beyond a doubt, and now 90% of the servemembers in iraq and Afghanistan want out, right now. And nobody can blame them; no American soldier should be sent to fight for oil profits by a traitor.

    Comment by Len — August 8, 2007 @ 4:24 pm

You’re wrong — I have no problem with Mitt’s sons campaigning for him. Campaigning is hard work and I’m glad to see all of them get involved in the political process.

What I objected to was Mitt’s justifying his sons’ “service to the nation” at the same time justifying his sons’ lack of military service, which sounded an awful lot like equating one kind of “service” with another. It may have been unfortunate editing — that ellipse between the two phrases may mean Romney had more to say that wasn’t reported.

And yes — I am a proponent of free speech. I have no desire to silence anybody, even when they say something this stupid. But I will offer my own rebuttal. Free speech works both ways.

When he was in college, was he the tough talker that he is now? Was he the “big bad redneck” who pushed people around like he does now?

    Of course not.

Instead of suiting up with the boys and mixing it up on the field, he suited up with the girls, and stood on the sidelines with pom poms and a megaphone.

And your point is??? I think it’s more telling that a the most recent Military Times poll on the subject (December 2006) shows more of our men and women in uniform disapprove of Bush’s handling of the war (42%) than approve (35%). These are better numbers for Bush than the American population in general (must be all those Repubs in uniform!), but his support is waning even among the choir.

    http://www.militarycity.com/polls/2006_main.php

And this is down considerably from 2005 and before. This poll is taken every year. It will be interesting to see what the December 2007 one shows.

The males who were of draft age during the Vietnam Conflict might well have appreciated having the option of working in a political campaign in lieu of serving in the military (which was available to only to people like Chimpy back then).

There would have been no reason to move to Canada, go to prison, file for conscientious objector status, attend college even if you’d rather shine shoes, marry someone you don’t really like and make sure she gets pregnant, shooting oneself in the foot to obtain a medical deferment, or employ the seldom-used strategy of parking one’s car in a lover’s lane location, calling the police, and then make sure that you were found making out with another guy when the police arrive.

Given circumstances being what they are today, if a military draft were reinstated, the latter strategy might still work.
