Romney equates sons’ campaigning to military service.

At an “Ask Mitt Anything” forum this morning in Iowa, former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) was asked about why his sons have not served in the military. His response:

My sons are adults. They’ve chosen not to serve in the military in active duty and I respect their decision in that regard. … And one of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I’d be a great president.

I bet he’ll pick up a lot of votes from military families for that one. Two gaffs in one: I respect my boys for choosing not to join the army and what they’re doing is just like fighting in Iraq, anyway.

    What a moron.

  5. Angry One says:

As you’ll recall, Mitt avoided combat duty in the rice fields of Vietnam by getting multiple deferments to perform his Mormon mission in the vineyards of France. And while candidate Romney has called for a war against virtually all Muslim groups worldwide and pledged to “double Guantanamo,” he has deployed his sons to the cornfields of Iowa to aid his campaign. If any of them go on record about being pro-war & pro-invasion., I hope the media climbs all over him/them.

Well, at least you’re admitting that Mitt and his girls are useless cowards. i, for one, would never enlist to fight under a deserter like Bush, because i know he couldn’t be trusted to do right by the services. He’s proven that beyond a doubt, and now 90% of the servemembers in iraq and Afghanistan want out, right now. And nobody can blame them; no American soldier should be sent to fight for oil profits by a traitor.

You’re wrong — I have no problem with Mitt’s sons campaigning for him. Campaigning is hard work and I’m glad to see all of them get involved in the political process.

What I objected to was Mitt’s justifying his sons’ “service to the nation” at the same time justifying his sons’ lack of military service, which sounded an awful lot like equating one kind of “service” with another. It may have been unfortunate editing — that ellipse between the two phrases may mean Romney had more to say that wasn’t reported.

And yes — I am a proponent of free speech. I have no desire to silence anybody, even when they say something this stupid. But I will offer my own rebuttal. Free speech works both ways.

    Of course not.

And your point is??? I think it’s more telling that a the most recent Military Times poll on the subject (December 2006) shows more of our men and women in uniform disapprove of Bush’s handling of the war (42%) than approve (35%). These are better numbers for Bush than the American population in general (must be all those Repubs in uniform!), but his support is waning even among the choir.

    http://www.militarycity.com/polls/2006_main.php

Either you can’t read or you’re a liar, and a bad one. Romney was clearing answering the question about why his boys hadn’t joined the military, so how could he possibly not be comparing them to boys who had? That was the question, Len. Or Ralph, or whatever your name is.

He was doing this in the context of a political campaign in which he was calling for an increase in the size of the military, and supporting the “surge” in Iraq. Only in the twisted mind of a wingnut, who refuses to admit he’s wrong about anything, could this be construed to not be a comparison with soldiers.

We aren’t weak (I served in the U.S. Navy), and we aren’t always the cheerleaders on the sidelines. When you think “cheerleader”, think of the POTUS with a megaphone — and he’s male.

As a woman, I would really appreciate it if you could avoid terms like “sissy girl”, “p*ssy”, “b*tch”, etc. Demeaning women in this way, or insulting somebody’s courage or strength by suggesting they are acting like a woman is an insult to women. We are NOT inferior to anyone.

  218. hellinabucket says:

Len, you are correct that people can serve their country in many ways. What you are missing here is that Mitt himself was asked about the lack of military service in his family and he equated serving in the military to helping his campaign. I can confirm that the enlistment age has been raised to 42. I got a call from an Army recruiter about two years ago. He asked if I was interested in enlisting, and when I asked whether I was too old (then 34), he said that the age had been raised to 42. I then mentioned that I had a family, and he asked me how many kids I had. I said three, whereupon he said the following, nearly verbatim: “Well, that won’t work, then—death benefits extend only to two children.”

That brought the reality of this ill-conceived, elective war home to me. Those who do not support the policy or the policymakers behind the war have no obligation to enlist in its defense. Those who do should feel a measure of pressure to make a contribution other than disrupting online discussion with inane and puerile provocations.

  234. Joefriday says:

    The complete quote.

    So on Wednesday, Rachel Griffiths of Milan, Illinois asked Romney about the non-service of his privileged sons, one of whom is completing a 99 county tour of Iowa in a campaign RV. Romney’s answer was, well, Romneyesque;

“My sons are all adults and they’ve made decisions about their careers and they’ve chosen not to serve in the military and active duty and I respect their decision in that regard. One of the ways my sons are showing support for our nation is helping me get elected because they think I’d be a great president. I respect that and respect all those and the way they serve this great country.”
In typical fashion, Romney conflated selfishness with selflessness. But if the response of Ms. Griffiths was any indication, American voters are waking up to the Great Pretender. Asked if she was satisfied with Mitt’s glib answer, Griffiths said:

“Of course not. He told me the way his son shows support for our military and our nation is to buy a Winnebago and ride across Iowa and help him get elected.”
Luckily for Romney, no one asked him about his predilection for rooftop canine waterboarding.

So far, you’ve claimed to be a college student, 24 years of age and a student of ancient philosophy. By your “logic”, these statements have all been utterly meaningless. In fact, virtually every single comment you’ve ever made has been utterly meaningless, so you are at least consistent.

By your “logic,” none of us can be believed about anything we’ve said about ourselves: our age, where we live, whether we’re married or parents . . .

we can, however, be judged on the basis of the content of our comments and credibility is either attached or not, depending on that content. You, by your behavior, have absolutely zero credibility, while Wayne has tons.

Reagan actually served. He was nearsighted and thus didn’t go to war, but he had enlisted in the army and done his bit. No shame to him that he wasn’t sent over seas.

Further, Reagan wasn’t particularly a hawk.

    Lets keep it fair.

    Comment by Bruce Gorton — August 8, 2007 @ 5:44 pm

Reagan spent WWII making movies, but in later years he would relate episodes from those films as if they were real and he had really participated in combat.

Reagan’s foreign policy had a huge element of proxy combat; rather than send American troops, the plan was always to get someone else in Afghanistan or Nicaragua or wherever, to do the heavy lifting. He was incredibly hawkish, to be fair.

Apparently, your response when somebody says you are being insulting is to quickly label that person defective somehow. And believe that if I am insulted by you then the problem MUST be with me, because I “can’t take a joke”. I can take a joke as well as anyone else — when the joke is actually funny.

I thought better of you. But I now see it is pointless to reason with you, since you see yourself as perfect and righteous, and you see me as the person with the problem. I might as well try to reason with a troll.

Romney should sign up all his sons to serve in Iraq right away. If he supports the troops what better way than to ease to burden on our overstretched military by sending his own sons to Iraq.

    Comment by Len — August 8, 2007 @ 4:11 pm

Ummm…. Well, the military is accepting up to 42 year olds now.

I was 28 when I RE-Enlisted to go to Iraq (after being honorably discharged from the Marine Corps for 3 years) and I would sign up in a heart beat again if I thought this war was as necessary. In six years (I am 30 now), I will re-sign again to go if this country was involved in a conflict and the military was hurting for recruits. Assuming this country can restore the ideals that once made this country great.

In fact, I re-signed to go even though I didn’t believe in the premise for going into Iraq. My Marines needed me and my country needed me, and I hoped I could be part of the solution to fix what we broke. Too bad the this administration has undercut the troops efforts at every turn. Now I realize, that restoring this country to what made it great is the best thing I can do.

You just lost your bet – how much do I get? Besides, you can’t “sign up to fight in Afghanistan – you go where they tell you and you will probably go to Iraq.

    What is your excuse?

  325. gorn by any other name says:

“How about some facts, like Dr. Dog has provided: Military = 56% Republican and only 16% Democrat” – Comment by Gregory of Nazianzus

The Military Times released its annual poll of active-duty service members, and the results showed something virtually unprecedented: a one-year decline of 10 percentage points in the number of military personnel identifying themselves as Republicans. In the 2004 poll, the percentage of military respondents who characterized themselves as Republicans stood at 60%. By the end of 2005, that had dropped to 56%. And by the end of 2006, the percentage of military Republicans plummeted to 46%.

The drop in Republican Party identification among active-duty personnel is a sharp reversal of a 30-year trend toward the “Republicanization” of the U.S. military, and it could mark a sea change in the nature of the military — and the nature of public debates about national security issues.

The rightward shift was dramatic: In 1976, 25% of civilians characterized themselves as Republicans, while 33% of military officers were Republicans — a military-civilian “gap” of only 8%. By 1996, the military-civilian gap on party affiliation had grown to 33%; while 34% of civilians self-identified as Republicans, so did a whopping 70% of military officers.

The partial de-Republicanization of the military is a hopeful sign — and not just for Democrats. A politicized military presents a threat to democratic ideals of civilian control. Over the last 30 years, the Republicanization of the military also has had a deeply distorting effect on public debates about national security, making it almost impossible to question Republican national security policies without being labeled “anti-military.”

Military Times, which publishes popular magazines for each of the US military branches including Army Times and Navy Times, cautioned that its poll, of 1,215 active-duty servicemen, is not necessarily representative of the military as a whole.

The respondents were “on average older, more experienced, more likely to be officers and more career-oriented than the military population.”

    The following is Bull $hit.

56% of the military are Republicans. Only 12% are Democrat, according to the latest Military Times poll.

It was for mid-east power decided by Bush and crew long before he was even in power. Check your history.

Over the last 30 years, the Republicanization of the military also has had a deeply distorting effect on public debates about national security, making it almost impossible to question Republican national security policies without being labeled “anti-military.”

To you losers, “pro-military” is about as meaningful as a politician wrapping himself in a flag, or a televangelist talking about Jayzuz. It’s just sloganeering for profit and power.

Most military people are know are a lot smarter than you swine give them credit for. They will see, and hear, and understand what you are all about. They are sworn to defend the Constitution. You are hell-bent on destroying it. YOU are not their friend. YOU are their enemy.

You have no evidence of that whatsoever. NO ONE lies about being in the military, except for a handful of very disturbed people.

Waynes talked with plenty of vets in here. They confirmed his service, by acknowledging things only those who served in certain areas would know.

You are a rube. A hack. A big mouth with nothing to back it up.

Waynes called you out dude. Don’t you get it?

He’s called you out, to prove his service, and you stammer like a little…. errr…. poodle (how’s that zooey?).

He’s called you out. You don’t disrespect a mans service to his country. We don’t even disrespect McCains service, but if a liberal serves, then he’s a moonbat.

Doesn’t matter. I respect and appreciate the service of anyone who puts on the uniform, regardless of whether or not I agree with their politics.

Whether the service claimed on this forum is fake or not, the above principle still applies.

If you actually served (or claimed to) rather than being a neocon chickenhawk ba$tard, I would still appreciate that hypothetical service.

He shouldn’t have to prove it. You should assume that any regular blogger is not going to be dumb enough to try to pretend to be in the military when so many members of the military come into these blogs.

Like I said, he’s talked with others in here from the military and no one has ever doubted him. Until now. Suddenly you doubt him, although as he pointed out, you believe him when he says he knows karate.

You make no sense. You’re an excercise in futility. You’re the very definition of “pathos” and you just keep digging yourself deeper.

  578. WaltTheMan says:

My father was in the US Navy and served as liason to the Chinese government in Shanghai when the attack on Pearl Harbor occurred. I was but 5 1/2 months old at that time. Dad was in the team that helped set up the logistics for the raid over Tokyo the following April. The only fly in the ointment occurred when a Japanese packet ship (Which was sunk.) spotted the US force and Dolittle decided that the raid had been compromised. He ordered the raiders to start the raid about ten hours early. At the target, resistance was minimal. What was intended to be a twilight raid with early morning arrivals in inland China was transformed into a mid-morning raid that was increased by about 200 miles in range. The result of all this was that the transports about 150 miles inland in China had nothing to carry because the B25’s crashed on the coast. Dad, Mom and I were taken out about two days after the raid by the Swiss embassy. That was my first taste of war.

She currently works at a hedge fund. She should join the military.
    Comment by Dr. Dog — August 8, 2007 @ 6:23 pm

Nor are you, Len. You’ve asked many people here why they’re not in Afghanistan but yet to explain why you aren’t there or in Iraq.
Ditto for you, Dr. Dog-doo, you’ve called several people here cowards for not being in the military and accused veteran Wayne of lying about his service, but you haven’t explained why you’re not in the military, Mr. Hypocrite. Certainly if you have had the time to post the same results from an old poll about the percentages of Dems and Rethug-supporters in the military around a dozen times, you could have found the time to tell us why you aren’t in the military.
Finally, why should Chelsea Clinton join the military, when neither of chickenhawk Bush’s–not to mention, neither of Dickhead’s–has?

  594. Not Canadian says:

    Mitt, the “compassionate conservative” type:

the Boston Globe described how he tortured the family dog by driving 12 hours with the hapless animal strapped to the roof of a station wagon. And when Romney’s 17 terrified kids began watched the tortured Irish Setter’s diarrhea stream down the car’s windows, Dad simply pulled over at a gas station, savagely hosed down the shit-covered dog — which was still locked in the cage on the roof — and then merrily hopped back in the driver’s seat and continued the 12-hour drive with the frightened, sick, soaking wet dog shivering in the violent highway wind.

  595. blogbob says:

#63 “Romney noted that his middle son, 36-year-old Josh”

That’s a little old to enlist. But I’m sure all the 36 year olds here rushed and signed up to be sent to Afghanistan!

    Comment by Len — August 8, 2007 @ 4:06 pm

Let’s see, 36 now, that would have made Josh 21 in 1991, the last time we went to war in the Middle East to protect our oil. Perfect enlistment age. But as usual, don’t expect Repugnican kids to take arms to serve our country. That’s a job for Leona Helmsley’s “Little People” (euphamism for “the rest of you”).

fortunately, that was a broad and great decisions you made..some people usually never asked their children about their plans and decisions, they just made instant decisions by themselves..well, in fact there were some who weigh the situations and just come up with right decisions..deciding is always a hard thing to do..just for example, thinking what was the best car you can own..a lot of ideas will arrived possibly made by some people’s thoughts and ideas…sometimes it’s important that people can express themselves about what they like to do..just like when i decided to own bmw (bmw oem parts), though some prefer vw, i took what it takes to be done..

  598. leslie says:

Apparently, they aren’t smart enough for military service.

I agree that Romney should not influence his son’s decisions about joining the military any more than he should vote for military action that requires other peoples children to die needlessly.
