A disasterous sitaution is Iraq is all the more reason to believe the President is serious about invading Iran: Nobody would believe he'd do it. Whether he's successful or not is meaningless: His decision to illegally use power is a victory -- nobody is stopping him.

He's a war criminal. Prosecute him. Now.

This study is right we can't have an open ended commitment in Iraq. Bush needs to understand this. If he had served in combat he and Cheney would understand how badly they are over stretching the military. Fact is, this civil war is not winnable, neither is the surge as no political progress has been made.

I can't see where it takes any real brilliance to see that the insurgents are killing too many people, nor that the conditions now can't be called success. How smart does one have to be to say we're there to fix a problem and we have got to fix it?

Further, it's painfully obvious that the RAND study has not taken into account how ... stubborn? ... Bush is. He's not running for re-election and he really doesn't care about popularity.

However, the question Atrios poses is silly. Why are we there? To make the level of violence go down. Just in case anyone reading this has missed it, the level of violence is ... going down.

Just because an event isn't on TV, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. If the US leaves Iraq anytime this year, millions will die in a bloodbath, just like they did in Southeast Asia, when we ran away from Vietnam.

Perhaps those in a hurry to get the US out of Iraq don't mind the deaths of millions that we have a chance to save. Perhaps they just haven't considered it.

There is a large Viet community in my city. I've considered it. I think we should stay until Iraq is stable, secure, and tells us to leave.

No. 20 Are you serious or just being sarcastic? A report commissioned by the administration but isn't on the party line so they hate America.

Since the National Guard is being pulled off the Texas and Arizona border I bet they could substitute for the Air Force.

Gotta love those open borders...after all we are fighting over there so we don't have to fight them here. Uh huh

As Marcus Aurelius predicted, the Air Force just announced that it is resigning so that it can spend more time with its families. Apparently, the Air Force has a lot of college-age children to think about and so it needs to enter the private sector in order to cover their tuition.

The White House has not said which branch of the service it would nominate to fill the position of the Air Force, but administration insiders say the Merchant Marine has the inside track.

OT, but related...

Raven, have you seen any absence of National Guard personnel in fighting fires?

I was thinking about this last night as i watched a map showing umpteen fires in the West.

Seems to me we used use the Guards in these situations.

Anyone?

<em>We can’t sustain our current troop levels anyway. Short of federalizing the Boy Scouts, we just don’t have enough troops. This escalation called a “surge” is doomed to collapse under it’s own weight regardless of the justification.

We could, start closing bases in other countries like Germany, Japan, Africa, Poland, Italy, hmm I read something that we have a base in all but like 17 countries. The American Empire, doomed to failure.

Maybe the Young Republicans will form brigades and finally fulfill their patriotic duty...or maybe they'll claim that they're lactose intolarant and can't serve.

Even though the Air Force is pointing out the obvious, I fear that will do nothing to dampen the chorus of wingnut cheerleaders bellowing about all the progress we're making.
