How smart does one have to be to say we're there to fix a problem and we have got to fix it? Further, it's painfully obvious that the RAND study has not taken into account how ... stubborn? ... Bush is. He's not running for re-election and he really doesn't care about popularity. However, the question Atrios poses is silly. Why are we there? To make the level of violence go down. Just in case anyone reading this has missed it, the level of violence is ... going down. Just because an event isn't on TV, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. If the US leaves Iraq anytime this year, millions will die in a bloodbath, just like they did in Southeast Asia, when we ran away from Vietnam. Perhaps those in a hurry to get the US out of Iraq don't mind the deaths of millions that we have a chance to save. Perhaps they just haven't considered it.
