President Bush is “scheduled to arrive in Kennebunkport today, staying through the weekend for a wedding.” The White House says it is not a “vacation,” but rather a “recess.” The Bushes will host French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Cecilia, on Saturday.
“A soft-spoken teacher [who] posted the words ‘Impeach Bush’ in a public garden” has been “cast as an outlaw.” The Plain-Dealer reports “the case is emerging as a free-speech issue of interest well beyond the boundaries of placid Portage County.”
The New York Times notes that President Bush’s unpopularity is taking a toll on his father. “It wears on his heart…and his soul,” longtime aide Ron Kaufman said. Some “close to the former president say it is clear that the father has been dissatisfied with the performance of some of his son’s aides, notably Donald H. Rumsfeld, the former secretary of defense.”
Bush “said yesterday that he is considering a fresh plan to cut tax rates for U.S. corporations to make them more competitive around the world.” With most of his legislative agenda in tatters and “his strategy in Iraq under bipartisan fire, Bush appears eager to return to familiar issues that animated the beginning of his presidency and might rally disaffected Republicans behind him again.”
The effort to reduce the size of Guantanamo “has been hampered by a laundry list of diplomatic, legal and political challenges, including the unwillingness of some countries to accept detainees and concerns about human rights abuses in others.” The Pentagon has suggested a goal to release up to 150 of the 360 men, “which would leave about 210 who they say could be eligible for war crimes trials or should be held indefinitely.”
“The space shuttle Endeavour roared into orbit Wednesday carrying teacher-astronaut Barbara R. Morgan, who was finally fulfilling the dream of Christa McAuliffe” and the rest of the Challenger crew that befell tragedy in 1986.
“Migrants from Mexico and Central America are finding it harder to get jobs and are living under a dramatically increased sense of siege,” according to a new study. The study “demonstrates for the first time with hard numbers the impact that the immigration debate in Washington is having on America’s streets.”
And finally: Fighting terror with a flashlight. “The Department of Homeland Security is developing a new weapon to fight the bad guys: a flashlight that makes a person throw up. … The bright light pulses, which vary in color and duration, induce disorientation, vertigo and nausea.”

August 9th, 2007 at 9:12 amOur corporations don’t need tax cuts. What needs to be done is to stop giving them government money. Also, the government needs to aggressively regulate them so they can become competitive with foreign corporations since they are unwilling to change their practices and the quality of their products themselves. If he actually wanted to help businesses, he would pursue a nationalized form of health insurance which would not only help ever American, but would take the burden of providing health insurance for employees off of the companies.

Bush “said yesterday that he is considering a fresh plan to cut tax rates for U.S. corporations to make them more competitive around the world.â€
Yes, we certainly do need to ensure that these corporations earn 10 billion a year rather than 5 billion a year and so that they can pay their CEO’s 10,000 x the salary of the average worker.
What this country needs is a President who will do something to stop corporations from sending our jobs over seas and from bringing people from India here to do our jobs for us. We also need to rebuild our manufacturing ability and stop buying cheap goods from China. I would rather pay more for my goods if that is what it takes to bring up the standard of living of average Americans.

Also, Civilian casualties will happen, however, we shouldn’t help the count along by carpet bombing civilians in a war were such a strategy is useless.

August 9th, 2007 at 11:09 amI beg to differ. I speak of the first energy crises in the 1970’s–perhaps you’re too young to remember? And the union most certainly did make adjustments at that time. Auto workers, steel workers, airline workers, and other unions were all making concessions in wages and benefits during the 70’s and 80’s and into the 90’s. Tens of millions of union workers did not receive a raise for over a decade. They saw health coverage wittle away with each new contract that presented fewer and fewer benefits. Jobs were reclassified and evolved into new job descriptions with lower wage bases. And it all went to naught because all the while the employees were giving up wages and benefits, the corporate execs were getting big bonuses and more and more stock options and generous perks.
Wasn’t it American Airlines, that was trying to force its pilots to take a wage cut to stay competitive, while giving the executive board millions in bonuses?

Why did you ignore my reply?
Missed it, my bad.
But instead of leading (you know management decisions), they all sat back and did not improve fuel economy, building bigger and bigger cars thinking American sales can keep the afloat in a global market.
Sure, thats another reason for their collapse. But you can see the union effect in all sorts of industries, and they represent an additional strain put on American automakers, and that the Unions have learned from their mistakes in the auto-industry. Look at airlines, the unions were forced to take wage cuts because they knew that otherwise they’d end up like the American auto-industry.

August 9th, 2007 at 11:12 amShame on those unions – trying to keep their members employed with living wages and health coverage! Don’t they know it’s all about shareholder dividends???
Actually yes, because now their members are unemployed as opposed to employed at a lower rate. Fine work by them.
Migrants from Mexico and Central America are finding it harder to get jobs and are living under a dramatically increased sense of siege,†according to a new study. The study “demonstrates for the first time with hard numbers the impact that the immigration debate in Washington is having on America’s streets.â€
God’s will is being done. You cannot lie and cheat to accomplish goals in life. Illegal immigrants, go back to your home country and apply for a work visa in a legal manner.
Comment by Daryll — August 9, 2007 @ 9:33 am
Where in that article does it say the migrants interviewed were ILLEGAL? The article is discussing the impact of discrimination on LEGAL immigrants. I know it’s difficult for a racist al-Qa’ida member like yourself to distinguish one brown person from another, but there are actually Central Americans who do come to this country legally.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:14 amAnd how about this one too, TP? Hearts and Minds in Afghanistan:
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/09/world/asia/09casualties.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2&hp
Altogether, he said, 20 people were killed in the airstrikes after Taliban fighters came through the village. He figured that the planes had bombed them mistakenly, because the Taliban were fighting United States forces well below the village at the time.
He said that he opposed the Taliban, but that after the bombing raid the villagers were so angered that most of the men who survived went off to join the insurgents.
“The Americans are killing and destroying a village just in pursuit of one person,†said Mahmadullah, 24, referring to Osama bin Laden. “So now we have understood that the Americans are a curse on us, and they are here just to destroy Afghanistan. They can tell the difference between men and women, children and animals, but they are just killing everyone.â€
All the gear and no idea.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:20 amSquegee,
See that’s where you’re wrong, the unions made concessions. Took pay cuts, paid more for their own insurance, and so on. Did the CEO’s and stock holders take one? BIG NEGATIVE!
And you know all those million unemployed auto workers now make less money to buy your service or product. Don’t you get it yet? First the break the unions, then the rest will decline with flooding the market with Illegal aliens, and importing college educated people to do white collar jobs. (Bill gates recently crying to congress there’s not enough technical Americans, so we need more work visas.) When in reality after the Y2K and Dot Com crash there are millions of unemployed technical workers, only they don’t want to work for $25,000 a year like that graduate from Inida.
You support turning America into a third world country? You know so the rich can get richer? that’s mighty un-American of you.

1. And the problem with that is?
2. Habeaus Corpus should not pertain to foreign enemies. Military combatants who fight in battles against the U.S. Military need to be handled by the military, not by civilian courts.
3. Bush tortured no one. The Geneva Convention does not apply to non-uniformed combatants who are not allied with any particular nation.

Just bc the GC doesn’t apply, doesn’t mean that torture is back ‘on the table’. When we torture POW’s and then insist that China do more in relation to human rights, we lose. “Do as I say, not as I do” is never an effective message.

My soul is with the United States and with innocent United States citizens who were wounded and killed during radical muslim terrorist attacks around the world. My soul is with our military fighting overseas to make sure that never happens again. My soul is with the people saved from terrorist attacks which were learned of through our interrogation methods, which have caused no permanent harm, or physical injury, to our enemies.
My soul is NOT with the radical muslims who want us infidels dead, and our way of life destroyed.

Right the Spanish Inquisition wasn’t allowed to ’spill blood’. And Alberto ‘Torquemada’ Gonzales thinks as long as ‘major organ failure’ doesn’t result, then the ‘interrogation techniques’ are legal.

August 9th, 2007 at 11:44 amBigfoot, you’re delusional.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:45 amThere are numerous reported instances of violent torture, of deaths of interrogated people.
But you dismiss them all.
Wasn’t there a case a few months ago of an interrogator who received a cut in pay rate after killing an Iraqi general? I seem to remember he was yelling questions at the man while he was encased in a sleeping bag, the interrogator was sitting on his chest and covering his mouth and nose.

1. When a Christian nation is about to invade a Muslim one, it’s not a good idea, diplomatically, to evoke prior wars of aggression and terrorism conducted by Christian nations against Muslim ones. It just reinforces the terrorist propaganda that America is the enemy of Islam.
2. Only 15% of Guantanamo detainees were picked up on the battlefield. Most of these “foreign enemies” were people sold to the United States to collect the reward money or silence a political dissident.
If they must be handled by the U.S. military, then they should actually be handled by the U.S. military, not just left in a permanent state of limbo. Charge them, try them, and either find them guilty or let them go.
Finally, there is a matter of credibility. How can the United States possibly criticize nations such as Egypt and China and Sudan for human rights violations when we are indefinitely holding abducted foreign nationals who have not been proven to have committed any acts of aggression against the United States? Guantanamo is a symbol of U.S. exceptionalism and hypocrisy.
3. You’re right, the United States doesn’t torture. We just redefine torture so that anything short of disembowelment is “aggressive interrogation.” Or we ship our unconvicted alleged terror suspects to countries that do torture.

Yes, I do – though it’s more than just Muslim countries that use torture. If we really want to “spread democracy” and “improve governance” in the Middle East, perhaps we should lead by example by respecting the rule of law ourselves.
August 9th, 2007 at 11:57 amBack on thread, remember that the President wanted to hammer Hussein because ‘He tried to kill my daddy’. If we follow that logic and consider that daddy dearest is now suffering because of criticism of the chosen one, what logically happens to those critics? Given the President’s love of breaking things, this does not bode well, at all.

I happen to agree, but unfortunately, if you believe the Holy Bible, the “good guys” who don’t believe in it are pretty much left out of the final picture.
I don’t want to turn this discussion into a solely religious debate, however, certain religions, such as the one commonly referred to as “Mormonism”, have an answer for those who don’t “believe” during their time on earth.

You can believe in the Easter Bunny for all I care, as long as you don’t impose your beliefs on the rest of us…. and slapping the Ten Commandments on a public spot implies government endorsement of those beliefs.
