Bush admin resists education benefits for troops.»

The Blotter reports that the Bush administration is opposing a congressional effort to restore full educational benefits for returning veterans. “Senate Democrats, led by Virginia’s Jim Webb, want the government to pay every penny of veterans’ educational costs, from tuition at a public university to books, housing and a monthly stipend.” The administration is resisting because it finds the program “cumbersome.”

Possibly even more dangerous to a totalitarian-minded regime
    than an informed citizenry,
    would be an informed military…

    Pentagon motto:
“Keep ‘em dumb, and behind a gun.”

  2. Peter Says:

“Cumbersome” is a ruse. The Bush Administration wants to spend the military budget on contractor cronies and not on the troops. The educational system is not a core Republican constituency, to say the least.

  3. LibStl Says:

Way to support the troops. A**holes.

  4. Toss these losers Says:

    Cumbersome???

Yeah, truly supporting the troops can get in way of the fat cats lining their own pockets.

  5. Texas Juice Says:

Plus an educated soldier will see the folly of trying to bend an Arab country to our will, ( OUR being neocons.) Keep ‘em stupid and voting for the GOP Theocracy.

BTW, if the right hates Iran soooo much, why are they so in love with Iran’s oil?

POINT: Clinton might have loved HUMMER’S but at least he didn’t drive one.

  6. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

This is just another comment on the true scruples of BuschCo.

One of the trolls was going on and on the other day about how 56% of the military is Republican. If so, what does this say about the GOOPers and how they treat tehir own?

Pipin’ hot Freedom Tries comin’ right up!

  7. Chris L Says:

I have seen how the military is treated in other countries, and we should be ashamed of ourselves. This is the very least our returning soldiers deserve. We could do so much more.

  8. Sharon Says:

Geeees, no wonder we are in such a mess….The mad hatter’s in charge want to keep sending our troop’s back untill none of them are left to get vet benefit’s…How long will it take the 28%’s to get it…The bull shit bush war is to distroy every thing and no return address is needed….Only fund the rich war machines and cut everything else…If only the election was this Nov. we might be able to save a few of our military before the war monger’s kill them all off along with the entire population of Iraq, Iran and any other country that the most evil cheney can think of…..Damn I am so sick of this madness, when will sanety return to america….Blessings, we realy need them…Impeachment will happen when sanety return’s to our country…

  9. WaltinTexas Says:

It wouldn’t be “cumbersome” if a few of his corporate friends were getting a piece of the pie. Bush/Cheney- a government for the few at the expense of the many.

  10. Not Canadian Says:

Bush doesn’t care about black people, or the members of the Armed Forces.

    And neither do his supporters.

  11. Chris L Says:

Watch, the same repubs who opposed Webb’s last amendment (to allow troops rest between deployments) will oppose this as well.

Does Bush care about anyone besides himself? I doubt it. He exhibits classic signs of narcissistic personality disorder.

  14. sami Says:

Jes like FEMA is cumbersome and Walter Reed is cumbersome and taxes are cumbersome and elections are cumbersome…

  15. ScrewBush Says:

GOPers support troops just like they support a fetus. Once a fetus pops out and is a “child” then they don’t give a shit. Once a soldier comes home and is discharged he/she is just another “American” and they don’t give a shit.

We learned all we need to know about GOPers from Katrina. They don’t give a shit about Americans. If for some short period of time an American fits into a small politically useful sub-group — like fetus, soldier, or brain dead woman in Florida — then GOPers will make the most craptacular spectacle out of you and themselves in order to play to the delusions of their base. But when you return to the ranks of just being another American, then God help you because you’ve just become another turd on the road.

  16. DigDug Says:

The sad thing is, with all their “Support the Troops!” sloguns, the real truth is that they really don’t support them or care very much about them at all. Anyway, when a war-hawk says support the troops, what they really mean is, “Support the war.”

  17. WaltTheMan Says:

Actually, the GI bill of WWII was what drove the 1947 to 1970 economic surge in the US. We don’t want that happening again!

Could you articulate on this a little?

  20. crocchoda Says:

if i recall, the GI Bill required a pay reduction that was applied to a matched contribution fund before it could be exercised.

    worth noting.

  21. toasterhead Says:

We’re letting them get killed over there, so we don’t have to educate them here.

  22. Captain Video Says:

“Does Bush care about anyone besides himself?”

Yes, definitely! He also cares about the haves and have mores. (A term that Bush has used.)

I believe that you are incorrect. It put my uncle through medical school from pre-med through internship.

  25. Master Shake Says:

This is awful. My fraternity brother is a marine corp reservist who has had to withdraw from 2 non consecutive semesters in progress to go to the desert for a year.

Ive been out of college for 4 years and he’s still an undergrad. At this rate by the time he gets his BA, he’ll be practically 30 and have zero corporate work experience.

Lets show the troops some love. It’s literally the least we can do.

  26. crocchoda Says:

    #23:

thanks. i was thinking of VEAP and the GI bill now.

  27. david Says:

All this will do is to serve as an incentive for recruiting. As long as their are live soldiers, Bush will keep sending them to Iraq so they may return as dead soldiers.

How about NO HEALTH CARE FOR RETURNING VETERANS? You think maybe that would stop the war?

    Probably not.

  28. Doctor Lee in Atlanta Says:

Those present bills are what Congress wants to change and Bush wants to keep the status quo.

the current MGIB is very generous, especially considering the volunteer makeup of the army.

  31. J Lewd Says:

GW Bush: the hollow codpiece. All chickenhawks should be rousted from their coops, deloused, defeathered, and chased off the farm. If ever there was a candidate for bird flu, it is this sorry sack of sh*t and his entire admonkeystration.

This administration finds the law cumbersome.

  33. IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

What was Rove talking about when he said that to much of a good thing could be a bad thing? Oh yeah, that would be an education.

  34. loretta Says:

…but this a$$hole has no problem paying Halliburton, Bechtel & KBR invoices…..
we can spend 2 billion a week on the war, but can’t fund children’s health insurance or educate our returning vets…..
they must all go to jail!

  35. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

How much longer can conservatives cling to this myth that Democrats don’t support the military and the troops, but Repubs do?

Must be why we don’t see any trolls on this thread.

  36. gwnorth Says:

Just two weeks ago, Bush was responding to the Dole-Shalala commission and pushing Congress to make improvements for vets.. wonder if the exec will move on their own changes, too. Found a good article about Dole-Shalala and a few others.. posted them here if anyone’s interested. One includes some interesting material from chairman of Vet Affairs cttee, too.

  37. Political Orphan Says:

What I find “cumbersome” is the raw hatred and contempt from the entire rest of the world that this murderous den of thieves has heaped onto this country, and all of us who live here! Never in my life have I ever considered the idea of moving to another country, never before have I considered lying about where I’m from - until this administration. The whole subject of government used to bore me. Now it just makes me cry.

  38. Marie Says:

The asshat in the White House really cares about the troops, eh?

No $$ for their education - better to keep them unable to think for themselves and be good order-taking soldiers.
Lots of $$ for Halliburton, KBR, Bechtel, CACI, etc. though because they are the real “patriots” in the fascist’s eyes.

Is the Iraq war actually figured in the budget these days or is it still a “side column” figure, with appropriations every few months?

Why does anyone with a brain think this guy is OK? Every time he goes before the camera he demonstrates how vacuous he is, how uncaring he is, how greedy and selfish he is, and the colossal calamity for the nation it was to put him in the White House.

  39. Dave M. Says:

The cons seem kind of quiet on this issue for some reason….

What we need is a standard hotbutton keyword for them in this post’s title– we know they don’t give a damn about the troops (outside of the participation of the troops in the surge, of course) or publically funded education. Someone work “Gore” or “Hillary Clinton” or “gays” into the title so we can get some debate going in here for chrissakes.

  40. Uncle Ho Says:

George W. sez: “We don’t need no stinkin’ edukatshun, just go with gut feelings’

  41. MapleStreet Says:

So once again, it ends up that “support the troops” really means make me feel good about me being on the winning football team and pat myself on the back because I fly a flag. Meanwhile, not willing to do anything that I’d have to pay for.

  42. Probus Says:

If Bush supports the troops he should provide the troops with the education benefits they deserve.

  43. bilbobaggins Says:

Why am I not surprised? I totally expect this Administration to go back on their promises of an education for the men and women who joined the volunteer army. They are already reneging on the bonuses the troops were offered when they signed up. So, in the end, these young men and women who joined the military to get out of poverty will end up right back in their poverty niche, if they are lucky, and if not, they will end up either dead, or disabled with no help from their government.

  44. bilbobaggins Says:

“Is the Iraq war actually figured in the budget these days or is it still a “side column” figure, with appropriations every few months?”

Every bill to fund the disaster in Iraq for the last 5 years has been an “emergency appropriation” bill, off the books. I certainly hope that Congress does not allow them to do that again. They should let Bush know that if he wants one penny more for Iraq, it will have to be submitted as a regular bill with offsetting cuts to government to pay for the money he wants to spend in Iraq. That will get even the attention of the 28% who still think Bush is doing a good job. If he had put the money for Iraq on the books, this country would have been bankrupt three years ago.

  45. GOPsmellsfunny Says:

Not as cumbersome as the impeachment hearings will be, Asswipes.

  46. Helen Rainier Says:

Just another sterling example of why I have come to hate not only this Administration but Republicons in general.

In the past, I have sometimes voted for Republicons but NEVER again.

They are the worst of our enemies and the worst of the terrorists who put us in grave danger.

  47. Woodsywizz Says:

#20 - You’re thinking about the “GI Bill” that was in force in the 70’s on. It took about $100 a month from your GI paycheck, and then ‘matched’ it. But GI’s were only getting paid $400 a month or so (as an enlisted E-1 Private, Airman Basic, etc.), so it was a terrible sacrifice for not that much coming back. And you could elect for it only once, in Basic Training, never again. If you cancelled you could not re-start. It wasn’t much of a benefit! Things have picked up a little, but we’re still not doing a whole lot for our veterans, including (it must be said) me.

  48. Andy, school teacher Says:

It is kinda disgusting that some people do not respect veterans!!!
