#20 – You’re thinking about the “GI Bill” that was in force in the 70’s on. It took about $100 a month from your GI paycheck, and then ‘matched’ it. But GI’s were only getting paid $400 a month or so (as an enlisted E-1 Private, Airman Basic, etc.), so it was a terrible sacrifice for not that much coming back. And you could elect for it only once, in Basic Training, never again. If you cancelled you could not re-start. It wasn’t much of a benefit! Things have picked up a little, but we’re still not doing a whole lot for our veterans, including (it must be said) me.

In the past, I have sometimes voted for Republicons but NEVER again.

Every bill to fund the disaster in Iraq for the last 5 years has been an “emergency appropriation” bill, off the books. I certainly hope that Congress does not allow them to do that again. They should let Bush know that if he wants one penny more for Iraq, it will have to be submitted as a regular bill with offsetting cuts to government to pay for the money he wants to spend in Iraq. That will get even the attention of the 28% who still think Bush is doing a good job. If he had put the money for Iraq on the books, this country would have been bankrupt three years ago.

Why am I not surprised? I totally expect this Administration to go back on their promises of an education for the men and women who joined the volunteer army. They are already reneging on the bonuses the troops were offered when they signed up. So, in the end, these young men and women who joined the military to get out of poverty will end up right back in their poverty niche, if they are lucky, and if not, they will end up either dead, or disabled with no help from their government.

The cons seem kind of quiet on this issue for some reason….

What we need is a standard hotbutton keyword for them in this post’s title– we know they don’t give a damn about the troops (outside of the participation of the troops in the surge, of course) or publically funded education. Someone work “Gore” or “Hillary Clinton” or “gays” into the title so we can get some debate going in here for chrissakes.

The asshat in the White House really cares about the troops, eh?

No $$ for their education – better to keep them unable to think for themselves and be good order-taking soldiers.
Lots of $$ for Halliburton, KBR, Bechtel, CACI, etc. though because they are the real “patriots” in the fascist’s eyes.

Why does anyone with a brain think this guy is OK? Every time he goes before the camera he demonstrates how vacuous he is, how uncaring he is, how greedy and selfish he is, and the colossal calamity for the nation it was to put him in the White House.

What I find “cumbersome” is the raw hatred and contempt from the entire rest of the world that this murderous den of thieves has heaped onto this country, and all of us who live here! Never in my life have I ever considered the idea of moving to another country, never before have I considered lying about where I’m from – until this administration. The whole subject of government used to bore me. Now it just makes me cry.

Just two weeks ago, Bush was responding to the Dole-Shalala commission and pushing Congress to make improvements for vets.. wonder if the exec will move on their own changes, too. Found a good article about Dole-Shalala and a few others.. posted them here if anyone’s interested. One includes some interesting material from chairman of Vet Affairs cttee, too.

we can spend 2 billion a week on the war, but can’t fund children’s health insurance or educate our returning vets…..
