Giuliani ‘Clarifies’ 9/11 Comments: ‘I Was Saying…I’m There With You’

Yesterday, former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani claimed he “was at ground zero as often, if not more, than most of the workers…in that sense, I’m one of them.” Election Central obtained video of the comments. Watch it:

After receiving harsh criticism from 9/11 rescue workers, Giuliani attempted to clarify his comments today on conservative Mike Gallagher’s radio show:

“I think I could have said it better,” he told nationally syndicated radio host Mike Gallagher. “You know, what I was saying was, ‘I’m there with you.’” [...]

“What I was trying to say yesterday is that I empathize with them, because I feel like I have that same risk,” he said.

“There were people there less than me, people on my staff, who already have had serious health consequences, and they weren’t there as often as I was,” Giuliani said, “but I wasn’t trying to suggest a competition of any kind, which is the way it come across.”

Giuliani’s attempt at mollifying the outrage over his attempt to tie himself to 9/11 rescue workers didn’t satisfy many of his critics:

“He is such a liar, because the only time he was down there was for photo ops with celebrities, with politicians, with diplomats,” said deputy fire chief Jimmy Riches, who spent months digging for his firefighter son.

“On 9/11 all he did was run. He got that soot on him, and I don’t think he’s taken a shower since.”

UPDATE: The Politicker has the audio of Rudy’s radio appearance.

UPDATE II: Watch 9/11 rescue workers John Graham and Reggie Cervantes criticize Giuliani. Both of them appeared in Michael Moore’s SiCKO. For his part, Moore will be hosting a fundraiser for 9/11 rescue workers tomorrow.

Every time that I observe Rudy on TV, in a newspaper or on the internet, I immediately realize that his opponents do not need to resort to negative ads. He makes them on his own. The Dems’ greatest fear is that he could fail to get the top of the Republic ticket.

  16. bilbobaggins says:

“What I was trying to say yesterday is that I empathize with them, because I feel like I have that same risk,” he said.”

So, Rudy, are you trying to tell us that you were in there 6-8 hours a day working side by side with the workers breathing the foul air? Or were you there for maybe a 10 minute “meet & greet”? I’m betting on the last one.

Rudy really doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut. He has milked 911 for all it’s worth and he has seriously pissed off the rescue workers, fire fighters and family members of the dead. Spouting off something like this trying to make himself “one of the guys” was a seriously bad move on his part.

You take a rather shotgun approach to posting, don’t you? Throw in enough words like “smear”, “slander”, etc. and hope some of it hits the target. You really need to be more focused.

First, reporting VERBATIM what “America’s Mayor” said is not a smear, nor is it slander. Rudy’s looking this bad all on his own.

Second, if you are going to accuse lefties of a “gutter-trash” way of life, please A) back up that accusation with some specifics, and B) explain how it ties into the topic at hand.

I agree that they aren’t necessarily tired of Republicans, but they’re tired of the current batch, and they are VERY tired of the Iraq war.

Yet the GOP contestants vying for the crown at the moment are all hawkish on the war and attempting to convince Americans that “if we don’t win in Iraq, we will have terrorists on Main Street USA” — and nobody is buying that anymore.

You’re thinking too rationally. The modern Republican Party is not the same as the Republican Party of 30 years ago, or even 10 years ago. It is a frightened, cowardly, corrupt, angry party that has thrown away things that it once valued: civil liberties, integrity, and accountability in government. What it stands for now is the maintenance of its own power base, and little else. Someone like Ron Paul may have appealed to many Republicans 30 years ago, but he’s a fringe character in today’s Republican Party.

I wouldn’t, either. I rely on results, such as the 2006 election. And I rely on my observations of the people around me. My gut feeling is that a certain percentage of Republican voters–maybe 20% of the total electorate, including yourself–would stand by Bush and the Republican Party if they all ate live babies on national television at the RNC Convention, convinced that it was some sort of liberal conspiracy. The rest of the country, however–slowly, surely, inextricably–is moving away from the Republican Party because they are coming to see how corrupt and morally bankrupt it is. We don’t need a judge for that. Its a matter of public record. Florida state police set up a road block outside of broward county Florida, stopping traffic for miles, keeping 16,000 DEMOCRATS from reaching the polls.

Rudy Giuliani attended a fund raiser in Brooklyn at a jewish community center. His speech was mainly focused on, you guessed it, the war on terror. He made fun of Michael Moore’s new movie “Sicko” and denounced it with Pro-American HealthCare sentiments. However he failed to mention what he would do for the 1st Responders who are dieing by the thousands.

His speech was big on terror, but when it came time to discuss the evidence like the recent member of his own administration who has gone public, Michael Haas, he was deaf. Mr. Haas describes explosions in the lower level of WTC Building 7 before the towers collapse. He said he was told to get out of the command center in building 7 and he didn’t make it down the stairwell soon enough when around the 8th floor the stairwell blew up. He witnessed the lobby area completely blown out and was told not to look at the dead bodies as he left.

Rudy also didn’t want to answer questions about evidence provided by NY FireFighter John Schroeder which completely shatters the official story. Rudy wasn’t the only politician who didn’t want to hear about evidence, NY State Senator Marty Golden was also in attendance. We don’t care about justice for the family members. Who cares if Osama Bin Laden is no longer wanted for the crimes of 9/11 (See his wanted poster on fbi.gov today).
