Tip-toeing around George W. Bush.
The Financial Times reports that Republicans find President Bush politically radioactive but can’t say that publicly. “We are caught in a bind,” says a senior staffer on one of the campaigns. “We cannot attack George Bush because we would be punished for disloyalty by the party base. And we cannot endorse him because that would be suicide. So we tip-toe around.”

Their inability to stand up to Bush is starting to have an affect on once loyal Republicans. I have 5 acquaintances who are Republicans. All five are furious with Bush and with the neoCONs who have, as they put it, “kidnapped my party”. They are all Goldwater type Republicans.
And because of their representatives spinelessness and inability to stand up to Bush, four out of the five have told me that they will definitely be voting for any Democrat in the next election. The fifth is on the fence. Their reason for voting for “any” Democrat is that they think that a solid defeat in 2008 is the only way to wake up the party and get it back on track. I suspect that these people I know are pretty typical of Republicans who are not neoCONs. That’s probably why polls show that if the election were today 56% of the public would definitely vote for a Democrat over a Republican vs only 35% who would vote for a Republican over a Democrat. That means that there are quite a few Republicans in that 56%.
