Bush’s 10 yr plan for Iraq: bring back the draft.»

Yesterday, Bush’s “war czar,” Gen. Doug Lute, told NPR that “it makes sense to certainly consider” a military draft and that it “has always been an option on the table.” Americans Against Escalation in Iraq has produced a video that puts Lute’s comments into context with the administration’s plan to stay in Iraq for “a nine or ten year endeavour.” Watch it:

“We really should draft liberals. Show them what it’s like to serve.
    Comment by Paul Romain”

i agree. let’s start with everyone’s favorite liberals, the bush daughters. then, all of romney’s liberal sons.

  3. barfly Says:

And this thread is different than the other draft thread because… of a video?

  4. dattexas Says:

Liberals know what it’s like to serve, and more importantly, understand patriotism far better than, say, someone like Paulie Romainie.

But, we really should draft Republicans first. I mean, they shouldn’t mind since they’re not hypocrites.

  5. barfly Says:

“We really should draft liberals. Show them what it’s like to serve.”

    But don’t bother with conservatives.

If there is anything the last few years have proved, it’s that the only target a conservative can consistently hit is his own foot.

If we start drafting the priviledged - like Paul - it will only cause our casualty counts to rise.

  6. SomeGaveAll Says:

Draft? You can bet if it really comes @ all that BushCo will make the next administration, not them, have to do it. Meanwhile, it’s fishin’ time in Kennebunkport (w/a/guide & crew along to do the hard work & GWB to reel ‘em in for the media). Later on it’s relaxin’ & brush clearin’ time in Crawford, while our kids’ & Iraqi life blood seeps into a far desert sand.

  7. Jeannie See Says:

This video isn’t loading for me. Anyone else having problems?

  8. eve Says:

We can’t draft many republicans — too many are felons, including all those sex offenders and bribe takers.

And the republicans who support the war, support the surge, and still won’t join? We already know they are cowards.

  9. Gregor Samsa Says:

I mean, they shouldn’t mind since they’re not hypocrites.
    Comment by dattexas — August 11, 2007 @ 12:39 pm

And because they are not hypocrites, they shouldn’t wait for the draft, they should all be heading en masse to the nearest recruiting office.

After all, they’ve been very vocal in their support for the invasion, the occupation, the “surge”, and everything else Pres Bush decides on Iraq, even as they question everyone else’s patriotism for not “serving their country” -all from the comfort of their own home, minding their “other priorities”. But they’re not hypocrites. Right.

There will be classes held for those who support Bush/Cheney and those from Rich Families. Yes Cheney will be teaching the famous 5 deferment policy only for the chosen few. Then if you or your family have the money your Father call say your campaigning with him or a fellow Republican.
Now for the rest of Americans well you’ll just have to go to Iraq, Iran or Afghan and deal with it.
I graduated with a class of 900+ as we got our diplomas the fellows let for Vietnam. 480 from the class never came back and the rest well never recovered. Only those who skipped out were saved. Two fellows went to Canada. Now is your chance to follow the Liar-in-Chief as he is looking forward to illegally invading Iran.

  15. Boudin Bob Says:

  16. Jay Randal Says:

Bush is only president for 17 more months, so who has agreed to keep troops in Iraq for 8 years after he leaves? Has Hillary Clinton agreed to betray the American citizenry? She will end up impeached.

  20. shane Says:

If they start a draft they’ll have to draft progressives. After all it was Bushco neocons that killed hero Pat Tillman and the same guys who lied and covered it up. It’s not safe to have those evil, murderous traitors next to honorable soldiers.

  21. ronjazz Says:

Start the draft with Romney’s sissys. and we’ll lose even faster as they run away from confrontation as fast as their little conservative legs will carry them. Same with the Bush girls. Reopublicans ahve always failed to defend America; Chimpy’s just the latest example, although as a Deserter and coward, he heads the list of conservative sissies. He never graduated from cheerleading. He can’t even run his own war, he had to go look for a sucker to take the blame, and now that sucker has acknowledged that the USA is losing, and needs a draft because wingnuts aren’t supporting the Deserter-In-Chief’s Adventure. it’s absolutely no wonder that the Republicans are polling a good 6-8 points below the Democrats. Nobody with a brain or any morals could support Republicans at this point. case in point, our brainless, immoral RATwing coward trolls. I find them to be proof that there is no god, at least as man has created him, or he wouldn’t have botched the job so badly by creating humans with less intelligence than spiders, and then letting them steal America.

  22. Jay Randal Says:

Romney is such a flaming hypocrite that if he became president, then he would do a draft but send his 5 sons to Europe to preach Mormonism. If a draft occurs, then politicians kids must be drafted and used as cannon fodder on the front lines > no exceptions allowed.

  23. Mr Rove Says:

    1. Bring back the draft

    3. Profit!

  24. barfly Says:

A draft would be a very, very, very bad idea.

    Comment by Boudin Bob

Why? Do you think it will lower the quality of soldiers serving? They’ve already lowered the standards, so gangbangers and crankheads are now eligible. The draft would give a healthy dose of political reality to the whole situation, as those priviledged scions of the elite would have to man-up, and be forced to hobnob with those of more humble origins.

A very egalitarian proposal; good for instilling a sense of shared sacrifice.

  25. gv Says:

    ok.

Exactly. Unlike you I believe in the freedom of choice and therefore in a volunteer military. We don’t need “shared sacrifice” when we’ve got people signing up voluntarily.

You don’t care about shared sacrifice. You’d just love the political capital you think it would give you and your misguided liberal friends.

And if you haven’t noticed, the military hasn’t been meeting their recruiting goals lately - their downward-revised goals, that is. Yes, I do care about shared sacrifice - and you cynically believe that somehow it absolves you of having to present a rational argument. Your argument is hazy, but the cowardice shines right through.

Liberals own this board, and this country. All the ignorant rudeness of the trolls just goes to show any visitor what they already know: the right is populated with neandertals and turd-flingers, all sharing one tiny semi-functioning brain. In the meantime, ignoring the smelly, greasy, classless, barely-closeted sh*theads here will cause them to melt down again, which is somewhat entertaining. p is on his way again, can’t even color within the lines.

  44. Jay Randal Says:

If a draft occurs, then Bush’s two daughters would be sent to Paraguay to hide out and Hillary’s daughter would be sent to UK as a Rhodes Scholar like her dad did to avoid Vietnam. Sen. John Kerry’s daughters would be sent to Europe and his wife’s sons to South Africa.

It the same reason the right can’t win a war against a bunch of camel jockeys; they have no patriotism, discipline or intelligence. I love how they prove that over and over again, with every America-hating post and every treasonous sentence. They have no ammunition against true war heroes like Murtha, Kerry, Cleland or our greatest president, JFK; they have only the Deserter-In-Chief and the brave, senile old actor who believed his own PR. Nobody should wonder why they’re so daft, they have literally nothing to be proud of, especially their cowardice in today’s world.

This (these) trolls here aren’t even remotely intelligent with the caliber of their comments.

If the draft is reinstated you can be sure that World War III will be right behind it. The only thing that has kept the Bushies from starting WWIII is the lack of manpower. But, with the draft reinstated Bush will commit the entire population of the US to war. And I mean everyone - every man, woman and child.

  64. ronjazz Says:

    Comment by Jay Randal — August 11, 2007 @ 1:28 pm

it’s more fearmongering and rightwing lies. Once we destroy and bury the GOP, we will get the troops home safely, and, unlike the repignants, we’ll take good care of them. In spite of being wisely anti-war, liberals do take care of Americans who put their lives on the line. conservatives see them as slaves and cannon fodder, thus have no use for them when they return wounded and suffering. Conservatives are the Devil’s Own.

  65. Fan_of_Man Says:

i think the QUEEN needs some help with her enlistment form!

  66. shane Says:

With recruiting goals going unmet the draft should be started immediately. If not the next president will be held responsible for initiating it. It’s Bush’s fault and congress needs him to take responsility for his failures and for decimating the military. It’s mothers of would be soldiers who are demanding their children not join the military. The draft is the wake up call the mothers of nonenlisting types need to wake up from the apathetic comas they currently live in.

  67. Jay Randal Says:

Nobody wants to talk about it, but the DLC is forcing Hillary Clinton as the Democratic nominee for President. They are going to manipulate the primaries in her favor, so voters will be used as token shills. Bush himself has already agreed for Hillary to be president, as long as she agrees to keep the troops in Iraq for 4 to 8 years of her presidency. Then Jeb Bush is supposed to take over for 8 years to continue it.

  68. ronjazz Says:

“The inside scoop if that there is one very psychologically deranged troll here using at least 30 different names.”

And it obviously never recovered from its mental breakdowns yesterday, which is why it keeps screaming into the emptiness. I guess I really got to it. it hasn’t made a lick of sense in any of its iterations since then. not that it was a fount of wisdom before, mind you. Wingnuts have earned that name, and they own it now.

And how do you know that Bush doesn’t want it? Bush has a history of having other people float his ideas to see how they play in Peoria before he comes out and supports a position. He is too much of a coward to directly fact the American public. This is why all his public appearances are tightly scripted and controlled and his audiences hand picked to make sure that they are all lemmings.

  75. Sean Says:

And how do you know that Bush doesn’t want it? Bush has a history of having other people float his ideas to see how they play in Peoria before he comes out and supports a position.

Very true. I remember hearing him say on TV that he would be bringing more troops home… “as they stand up, we’ll stand down”. That was when the surge was only supported by McCain, and I was so grateful that Bush didn’t support the idea. Oh how the times have changed :-).

  76. Russ Says:

I guess it should come as no surprise that Bush’s man would disregard what his generals have to say. They know all to well, thanks to Vietnam, what drafting hordes of unruly young men who don’t want to be there can do to an army.

  77. Ben Dover Says:

As unfortunate as it is, I dont think the collective lethargy of this country regarding the war in Iraqnam and the war of terrorism wont come close to ending until there is a draft. This time around there should be no deferrments. No 2-S like Cheney got. No passes for a most appropriate boil on his ass like Rush got. None of that. Everyone serves and everyone goes and as soon as the Bush twins are on a C-5 headed for Baghdad you’ll see an immediate rush to end the carnage.

No patriot should join Bush’s military, draft or not. Mss murder by a Deserter is not what the founders had in mind. in fact, they were against a standing army. A draft is only necessary in wartime, and even then, barely necessary, because if America really needs defending, there are no shortage of liberal volunteers, as in WW2. It’s only when petty murdering tyrants like Bush The Deserter and Hitler get power that a draft is necessary for them to kill people that have oil or land.

If thats the case, the people will protest at that time, not when they got back in bodybags…but who knows, I cant accurately say that people in the US seems really worried about Iraq. Just now and then.

  99. ronjazz Says:

Reinstating an active draft will cause riots larger than those seen in the 60s. 70% of Americans know that Bushco lied us into mass-murder, and want no part of it. 85% of Americans want diplomacy reinstated, not the failed policies of warmongering traitors.

  100. barfly Says:

    “Send the Dodging Romney Boys!”

They could do a USO tour…

Dance a little, sing a few ditties - backed by the Strawmen, a ’90’s conservative coverband.

  101. Jay Randal Says:

ronjazz > I have to go, but mark my words Chelsea will be sent to England > UK > to avoid any draft. She does not make that decision. Her mother will make that decision. Bush’s two daughters will not serve either and will most likely be sent to Paraguay.

  102. Juan C Says:

We can’t make them do anything, we can on ly work to rescind their power over the next years of democratic dominance.
    Comment by ronjazz

That is so wrong, ron. People are not aware of the power it has. Do you remember those scenes in cartoons, movies, ads, etc of a guy in a suit standing beside a chart that depicts a line going down, in front of a member board? Thats all they care about: profits.

Try boycotting their products. You will see you dont depend on a lot of crap you buy and they will desperately do your biding. (Of course, they will be massive layoffs and that…but thats when cooperatives are born)

  103. Tau Says:

The draft will stop the war. Do it.
    Comment by Juan C

I know this sounds Odd, but what may stop the war is not the draft but perhaps Chinas loans which supplement it. China has said that it may dump American dollars. Paulson, sec of treasury, recently made 4 trips to China to raise value of Yuan. Their is a bill in congress to sanction China to raise the Yuan.

Americans are certainly tired of the war but their eyes are now looking toward the economy.

  104. Juan C Says:

    BTW, to the GW deniers.

Thousands of dead people and millions without home, food and basic services in India, Nepal and Bangladesh due to a huge typhoon that covered great part of south Asia.

Snow and a freezing wave over Chile.

    Comment by Juan C

Not in America. We’re raised on John Wayne-type sterotypes, “When the going gets rough…” bromides, wars with High Noon endings - and it isn’t until brothers and sisters start showing up draped in flags that it hits home. I saw the same thing during the Vietnam era.

  107. JD Rhoades Says:

If I was Bush, or any Republican for that matter, I wouldn’t be making any long term plans. They’re toast if they keep pushing this war.

  108. Tobey Tall Says:

The Chinese government has begun a concerted campaign of economic threats against the United States, hinting that it may liquidate its vast holding of US treasuries if Washington imposes trade sanctions to force a yuan revaluation.

Two officials at leading Communist Party bodies have given interviews in recent days warning - for the first time - that Beijing may use its $1.33 trillion (£658bn) of foreign reserves as a political weapon to counter pressure from the US Congress.

  109. katy Says:

President Nixon abolished the draft in 1973. Restoring it, Lute said, would be a “major policy shift” and Bush has made it clear that he doesn’t think it’s necessary.

which means he plans to restore it (or make sure it is),
because EVERYthing is opposite in BushCoBizarroWorld.
    .

  110. Tobey Tall Says:

The republicans realise they have pushed the war to long, and their gonna gets hammered in the election , but cannot stop Bush , The longer Bush keeps this up the bigger the defeat in the end, which is also why the democrats are acting weak

The democrats will be entering power with loads of new and unpopular laws made by Bush and a bigger majority than ever

They will keep up the Bad US foreign Policy -

    Nothing ever changes

  111. had enough Says:

Bring back the draft? Well after all we need military might to continue with PNAC, to help with corporate gain and what a better way to help OFF out the civilian population…the ones not the have mores… cutting the funds to infrastructure, safety nets, schools - that may take too much time…
Are WE THE PEOPLE going to stand by and watch this potential genocide go on?

  112. jim Says:

The notion that a draft will make it EASIER to send people to war is absurd. We need a draft precisely because with a draft Americans are far less likely to go to war. Charles Rangle is right, without a draft, the right is more than willing to go to war, their sons fly planes around Texas and drink themselves unconscious, while the children of the poor fight and die.

  113. Tobey Tall Says:

while the children of the poor fight and die.

But rich kids make officers within 3 months and never go into danger zones OR end up being privates fixing brakes well behind the fron lines,

So basically the poor still die

  114. ronjazz Says:

Rich people dont die in wars. Thats a fact.

  116. bilbobaggins Says:

“The draft has always been on the table, but the ones who are fearmongering, are the leftwing group, Americans Against Escalation in Iraq.”

Wow, the righty trolls accusing Democrats of fear mongering. How disingenuous can you get?

But, that seems to be the current approach the RNC has given it’s trolls. Accuse the Democrats of everything we are guilty of. It’s called PROJECTION!

  117. Justice Says:

TP should block the IP of this whacko, he is working hard to disrupt this site. He clearly has mental problems, obviously it is only one deranged person using dozens of names.

I know TP wants to stand by their noncensorship values but when one person is attacking their site repeatedly, banning is appropriate.

  118. Tobey Tall Says:

If it were my kids I would change country for a few years - Canada or even India

  119. Tobey Tall Says:

I would not let my kids fight George Bushes battles for him

I would let my kids be insurgents though IF my country were invaded

  120. had enough Says:

    jim

Charles Rangle has the right idea of the kind of a draft - All, everyone, with no deferments, no loop holes would have to serve. If the wealthy and those serving in congress had no way of keeping their kids out of the draft and from going to the selected war, we would have no illegal invasions/wars.
But could this be enforced? One of the biggest outrages during the Vietnam war - the poor and middle income were forced to serve and die while the wealthy had ways of keeping their kids home.

  121. Thomas Says:

I don’t like the idea of the draft, especially considering that I’m of draftable age but there may be a positive side.

Thus far, opposition to the war has been pretty open handed and has, internet bloviating aside, generated very little concrete opposition when compared with Vietnam.

The shadow of a draft will certainly motivate a large population that had previously not concerned itself with the war.

  122. had enough Says:

The ulterior motive Rangel is seeking is justice for all including fighting and dying for our country. Isn’t that the way the constitution is supposed to work?

  123. katy Says:

  124. had enough Says:

What is the draft age these days? The military likes them young… 18 years old as if it easier to train aka brainwash….the age limit now to join is what 42?… women now fight.. so what are we going to have - all must be drafted - great family values.

  125. criticalthinker Says:

Anybody who thinks the youths of today will “blindly” go off to the Iraq war like they did back in Vietnam, have not been paying attention to our culture’s evolution and youths in particular.

The Iraq war was only possible because we had an all volunteer army, and the neo-cons know that a draft will end the Iraq war in a flash, which is the reason they are so opposed to reinstating it!

Could it be that they like to brag “Look, we have threads that average 250 comments”? It doesn’t matter that of those 250 maybe 25 are on subject and part of a genuine discourse.

They have won, but not without the help of many of the regular posters on this site.

  134. Hmm Says:

Given the DNC support for illegal warrant violations with the FISA Act, you may presume teh DNC and GOP will privately hold positions contrary to their public statements.

If the DNC really opposed a draft, they wouldn’t be talking about it. They’d end the debate and take it off the table. It doesn’t matter if the draft is or isn’t coming: The goal is to shift attention from the failed US government, and put the American public on the defensive.

Time to prosecute Mmbers of Congress and the President for this reckless-illegal war war, prisoner abuse and illegal warrant violations. Rather than end what is illegal, they keep funding it. The refuse to end waht is not lawful. That is a war crime.

I still believe that its possible to post well on TP. I’ve had a few times when after the name calling has stopped, trolls and I have had good conversations where we have discussed different points of view.

If Zooey has been lost then thats a real shame - Z was (and is) someone special.

  136. MN Dem Says:

I’d support a draft if standards were adherred to (juvenile and criminal background checks, no drug charges, emotional fitness) and NO EXEMPTIONS (including gender) or DEFERMENTS!!! I know it could put Mitt’s kids at the top of the list, but we gotta start somewhere..

  137. Not Canadian Says:

Ah, the Neoturds worst nightmare - a shortcut to a meaningful resolution and sooner withdrawal - two things they have NO interest in because their motives and means are dishonest, or criminal at worst, for no other reason than power/money (oil).

F*ck em ALL I say. Bring on WWIII and let’s get back to the basics of survival/life. The cowardly chickenhawks will be the first to die, they’re just too short-sighted.

  138. Hmm Says:

This draft talk is a ruse to shift attention from the President’s war crimes; and his legal counsel complicity. Civilian lawyers in Germany were adjudicated with war crimes.

  139. Probus Says:

Bush will not add the draft but will continue to send the same tired soldiers to their 5th and 6th deployments while he relaxes on vacation himself. He doesn’t care for the troops.

But it will short-circuit some of the “let’s give it another six months” argument. The challenge is Bush/Cheney policy, not the War–believe it on not. Remember Hmm, the more the guilty talk, the more they implicate themselves.

  142. UKBristolDave Says:

Hell, if the war in Iraq means so much to the security of the US then it makes sense to bring back the draft.

Of course, the war in Iraq has less than f*ck all to do with the security of the US.

  143. Sad Libtard Says:

  144. DrBB Says:

I’m digging that !!!!!!!! thing. Since this site doesn’t have an “ignore” function it’s making it much easier to instantly identify and skip the idiot troll posts.

  145. shane Says:

We need to bring back the draft so that all parents in the US, not just parents whose children would like to enlist, start paying attention to the war. It is the only way to protect those soldiers from being used on a never ending basis. These ceaseless tours are as abusive as any human rights violations.

Americans need a wake up call and they will only wake up when these manufactured wars touch their lives.

  146. Probus Says:

Bush avoided combat service in Iraq. He won’t bring the draft back. He will continue to send the same tired, exhausted troops back to Iraq. He doesn’t care for the troops.

    Comment by Uncle Ho — August 11, 2007 @ 5:19 pm

Amen. And only the draft will get enough citizens up in arms that the marches cannot be ignored on the news like they are now.

  148. Probus Says:

Did Bush serve in Vietnam when his country came calling? Nope. He chickened out.

  149. Probus Says:

Cheney is a war monger. He wants to go to Iran for oil. He gets a million dollars as his annual pension from Halliburton who is the largest defense contractor in Iraq.

  150. W.Clements Says:

Now that Bush has broken the back of the military, there really isn’t much option left but a draft. Unless, of course, we deploy out of Iraq which is not a likely scenario any time soon.

A draft, however, would end the war in Iraq a lot sooner.

  151. Captain Video Says:

“We really should draft liberals. Show them what it’s like to serve.
Liberals like Romney’s 5 sons and the rest of the able bodied, military age members of the Romney and Bush clan.

  152. curmudgeon Says:

George W. Bush’s grandfather was part of a group in the early 1930s that tried to overthrow FDR, and Ret. General Smedley Butler’s refusal to go along with the plan must have left a sour taste in the Bush family’s mouths after this “debacle.” The plan was to install a fascist dictatorship in the United States. For further details, read “The Plot to Seize the White House: The Shocking True Story of the Conspiracy to Overthrow FDR” by Jules Archer.

So, George W. Bush must surely be salivating the opportunity to one-up both his father and grandfather. His father didn’t invade Iraq during the Gulf War in 1991 and served only one term in office. W invaded Iraq and is a two-termer.

His grandfather’s plan to participate in overthrowing our democratically elected government failed, but maybe W has a chance to succeed where his grandfather failed.

Also, if current trends continue for much longer, all that was gained as a result of the New Deal will have been reversed. The costs of unending wars, coupled with the impending demise of Medicare (which will fail much sooner than Social Security), and the deferred costs of repairing/replacing deteriorated infrastructure (the deferred maintenance cost now estimated at one trillion dollars) will all come due at the same time that the glut of baby boomers begin to retire (or rather, reach the age that the previous generation was able to retire).

Rush Limbaugh is quoted as saying, “”Roosevelt is dead. His policies may live but we’re in the process of doing something about that as well.” George W. Bush & friends seem to be doing their very best to deliver on this promise.

We might also do well to consider a quote by George H. W. Bush in December, 1992, when he was interviewed by Sarah McClendon –”Sarah, if the American people had ever known the truth about what we Bushes have done to this nation, we would be chased down in the streets and lynched.” Remember that W didn’t announce his intent to run against Ann Richards for Governor of Texas until 1994, nearly two years later.

Does anyone actually think that Rush or H. W. were kidding?

  153. curmudgeon Says:

Want a quick, simple solution to end the U. S. occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan?

Mandate that all individual and coporate tax cuts since Chimpy and his buddies invaded the White House in January, 2001 be rolled back to December, 2000 levels, and additionally, specify that these rollbacks will continue, at a very minimum, until the United States has completely vacated Iraq and Afghanistan.

Anyone think this might bring about some change?

  154. curmudgeon Says:

Any of you have children or grandchildren who are of draft age, or are approaching it?

Just to get yourself into the spirit of it all, please check out the video clip on YouTube of Country Joe & the Fish’s rendition of “I Feel Like I’m Fixing to Die Rag.” Choose the Woodstock version.

If you were there at the time, you will be amazed about how much you’ve forgotten about it in the meantime. If you were too young to remember, ask your parents or grandparents to view it with you, and then discuss. You will all be amazed. Guaranteed.

  155. marlow Says:

Nine to ten years? Should be just about what we’d need to take their oil, or at least get the pipes flowing from permanent base to permanent base and then out of the country. Parents, gas up your SUV’s and hand over your children; Exxon needs to borrow them for just a little while…

  156. Robt Says:

As anyone can plainly see. This is not George Bush, this is the War Czar ( Bush’s insulation).

You have to blame the War Czar for it all now. Now if Iraq doesn’t work out for GW, he can fire someone for poor performance. And that would be Lute.

The President is just too busy to be Commander in Chief, you see.

  157. Hannipal Says:

  158. Parrotlover77 Says:
